Walking in here was like stepping into a time warp, but in the best kind of way. Once an American staple, diners now are pretty darn scarce and hard to find. My partner and I stopped at Dean's Diner on our way back from a road trip. We were impressed with the good condition of the diner overall, since much of it appeared to be original. It was nice to take it all in. The staff were welcoming, the food was good and comforting, but the showstopper here is clearly the pie. I couldn't even tell you how many kinds they have, but the server listed off at least 10 when I asked. He ordered lemon meringue, and I ordered chocolate peanut butter. I would drive from over an hour away for the pie and experience again. The portion sizes were very generous, and pies can be ordered in advance. I have visited this place over the years. My wife is from the area and when we come to visit over the summer it's a stop we try to make. The service is friendly and efficient. These western Pennsylvanians are all so friendly so it's not a big stretch for them anyway. The food was all good, nothing spectacular, but certainly good. I'd give them 3.5 stars if I could. What makes this place stand out though is their pies and the large selection to pick from. They had them of all kinds and flavors - fruit, cream, merengue, whipped, warm, cold, a la mode, or not. This is a classic roadside diner right out of the '60s. The food is very good, and the prices are right out of the '60s too; very affordable. There's not many of these left. The staff is friendly and attentive. I've stopped there several times as I passed. It's right along the main road, with easy access in either direction. Another good thing is that it's open 24 hours, so no matter how late or early I'm passing, it's always open. Locals & truckers tend to pile in at mealtimes, but there's plenty of seating. It's more than just a good meal, it's a destination. I rate it an A+. read more

Dean's Diner is a landmark when driving Rte 22. Some people may not know exactly where they are when they see this, but they know how far they have come. I remember growing up and the local television stations would use this as a reference when they would make their way towards Pittsburgh. Zooming by you see the shiny diner car sitting there and rarely give it a second thought, that is until you are miles down the road and realize you should have stopped there to get food instead where you had stopped to eat. I, myself, am not immune to this as I have done this on multiple occasions. However I remedied that recently. After a particularly hard shift at work I decided that I needed some comfort food and knew that no matter where I stopped, gas station grub was not going to help me get through the crap of a night I just had. On top of that I was feeling down in the dumps and felt like curling up in a ball and just calling it a night. Knowing that this is a 24/7 establishment I finally decided that I had to stop here to fill my pit of a stomach. Walking in here is like being transported back to a time that fast food meant that it was prepared quickly for you after you ordered it and it didn't have to be in a patty form. You sidle up to a stool, take a minute to yourself to take in this time capsule and wait for a menu. Being greeted by the waitress snapped me back to reality for a moment. Diner folk are just different from your traditional restaurant workers. They give off this persona that they really care about you dining in their establishment rather than just hurrying you through your meal and out the door. I am not sure what it is but I seem to always look for one item on the menu when I hit up a diner, sometimes I'm lucky with it, other times I have to look longer for what I want. This time I was lucky and without hesitation I got myself the meatloaf dinner with mashed potatoes and a side salad. To me this is like a diner staple. The salad wasn't anything special as the base of this was iceberg lettuce. So to me, this was standard and a nice start to an attempt to cheer myself up through food. Then the meatloaf arrives. Just looking at the plate that had a slab of meatloaf on it and a pile of mashed potatoes all covered in gravy made me feel warm inside. The meatloaf was simple. That is not a negative thing, it was tasty and not overpowered by spices. The mashed potatoes were nice and fluffy and that gravy was my life force to get me through the rest of that night until my head hit my pillow. I literally was scraping my plate wishing that there was more to have. The bill wasn't bad at all, less than ten bucks for a satisfying meal that came with some nice chatter from the waitress. So maybe I kind of had a date with the waitress now that I think of it. It was nice to have some company as I washed away the bad night I had with some soul filling food. Definitely a welcoming place that makes me want to stop back in anytime I can. Who knew that a bad night could be turned around with a home cooked meal? Keep driving......food is average at best . Service was super slow, they wouldnt even look over so we could see if they were going to take our order. Waitress was polite but not pleasant. People qho arrived after us got their food before we did. I ordered the turkey dinner, potatoes were fake. 2nd order was blueberry pancakes and sausage. It's decent dinner food. But it's the kind of place you go with your grandma. Depending on the dish you may get something delicious or something a tad bland. They say they are famous for their pie. Which I agree is good but to be honest I wouldn't claim it's the best pie around. Maybe a decade ago but with the options for pie nowadays it can't really compete. read more

A visit to have lunch here was suggested by family members. It is a traditional diner with a lot of locals stopping in. The lunch special prices were very reasonably priced as well as the regular menu items. I saw a small salad bar but I didn't try it. The relatives chose the lunch special of Reuben sandwich and cup of potato soup. The Reuben was a big hit, but they said the potato soup didn't taste homemade but tasted like it was made from a mix. I don't know...I am not crazy about potato soup. I was happy with my choice, which was the deluxe hamburger and came with French fries and coleslaw. A great selection of pies are offered for desert. I went with coconut cream. Three stars mainly because the server was just not friendly. She didn't greet us, didn't offer refills on drinks or coffee, and gave me a big sigh when I asked for a small takeout box. I usually give everyone benefit of the doubt, but she didn't impress me at all. If you stop in, I hope you enjoy your food and get a friendlier server. read more

Wow what an experience I've never been any place like this the 20 minute wait was quite interesting it gave us a chance to look around and realize that we stepped back in time to a very dismal diner. I don't know what was with the waitress she was friendly but I don't think she did this job before anyway anyway if you're not interested in what you're putting down your throat and you don't have much money to spend this is the place to go read into that line whatever you will. read more

We had a great lunch on our way to Pittsburgh. This place is a true diner. No frills just a good, simple meal with a hard working staff. My BLT was like the BLT my grandma would make me. It was good but the sentimental factor made it priceless. The special treat was the homemade pie. They had more than 10 options. I chose the PB pie and it was delicious. It was more of a custard type recipe which made it a little lighter and smoother than the cream cheese type. In a word of over priced, over complicated food (which I also enjoy at times) this was a throwback to a simpler time. Deans is a traditional diner that has all the Americana you can soak up. It's clean and the bathrooms are clean. We sat in a booth and didn't wait for a waitress. She was very nice and efficient. We understood food may take some time because there is a sign telling you they have a shortage of staff. We had great food and the apple and coconut cream pie were delicious. Sadly, people streamed in and were turned away due to the staff shortage. I recommend you come to Deans early to get a seat. Pray they get some waitress real soon. read more

I placed a to-go ordered. I was pleased when I got there 8 minutes later that it was already ready! However, the costumer service is why I leave a poor review especially after speaking with my husband and yesterday he ordered lunch while at work and had an awful experience as well. I asked to add two large fountain drinks to my order as well when I arrived. Took the hostess a few good minutes to find the price on the menu. Then had to go in the back to figure up tax. After coming back out she had to ask a server to do it for her. Totally fine if your new and just don't know, I get it, but then it took her a few more minutes to figure it out. Then she proceeds to get my drinks. She asked the server what to put them in. No lids for the to go cups so she gave me coffee cups. Would of been nice to have this knowledge before paying full price for two drinks 1/3 the size. No explanation and no apologizes. Two servers, the hostess, and only 3 tables used in the business as this was all going on. Do not leave someone to do a job they were clearly not trained enough to do. I have never had a bad experience at Dean's. It's my comfort food place to go. The prices are wonderful!! Food is always hot and exactly how I order it. Even when it's packed, and usually it is, the ladies are always friendly and professional. It can get somewhat noisy especially when there's young children around, but in general, the food comes out hot and fast. I try to sit where Sharon is serving...She's so friendly and kind. I think she's their gem. My water glass is always full and coffee cup ready to go. Thanks Sharon for making Deans one of my favorite places to eat. As we were heading back from Benton and were an hour away from Pittsburgh, Kay said that she was hungry (a hungry Kay is a cranky Kay), so before we knew it, we were sitting down in a boxcar diner that came straight out of a postcard. The menu is pretty small, but what they have they seem to do well. What do you think I had? I almost ordered chili, but you guessed it, I went for the 1/3 lb. burger. It's like The Clown's Big Mac and Eat N Park's Superburger only superior and comes complete with the required third bun in the middle. It's a triple decker that's 3 notches above other burgers of its type. The fries. Eh, they were there and were nothing special. The real potato story lies in their potato salad. You know I ordered some, and I was glad I did. I don't think I've ever had a creamier tater salad, and it had a little bit of tang to it as well. It is was what Grandma's Potato Salad, the ubiquitous bane of delis everywhere, could never, ever be. If they replaced Grandma's with Dean's, the world would taste a much better. I tried my girlfriend's Corn Pudding and was knocked into next month! Man, where has this been all my life? How deprived am I? This is why they call yummy home cookin' Comfort Food. Early this year, I started a job assignment which took me through Blairsville, PA. I left too early in the morning for most breakfast places en route so I was quite happy to see that Dean's Diner was open 24 x 7, so I stopped for breakfast. Dean's Diner is a traditional diner with all the standard stainless steel, counter stools, booths, etc. In addition, they have a more modern dining room to the side. The morning crowd create an atmosphere which is a bit on the red-neck side. Many of the folks must be regulars as they are busy chatting about their work assignments, leisure activities, medical conditions, etc. At any breakfast place, I usually order a veggie omelette with a side of bacon and coffee. Mike, the morning cook at Dean's Diner, was very creative and tried a different variation each time I came in until he really came up with an award winning recipe with lots of steam vegetables and swiss cheese. Let me start by saying... not one waitress, the guy who looks like he'd be the manager and not one other person in the building is wearing a mask. Not at all. I ordered a salad with ranch on the side.. they brought it out there was a bug in the ranch, I asked for a new one, it looked like she brought the same cup back out after wiping some off. Then someone else at my table ordered a salad with no onion.. she got onion in her salad. Someone else ordered chicken tenders with fries, there was a big curly black hair on top of her fries.. she has blonde hair.. it was not hers. They have paper menus... they reuse them.
