Deckhand Dave's was a "must" visit during our last trip to Alaska, at least that's what I was told. After you jump off your cruise ship, it's just a short walk down the Main Street to the ordering area and outdoor seating. We tried a variety of tacos and they were all quite tasty, with one huge disappointment; the tortillas. I get the fact they are selling tacos hand-over-fist and need tortillas in mass quantities, but these were a huge faux pas that detracted immensely from the fish. It was such a distraction I wish I hadn't ordered these flat, cold, shingles to wrap the tasty salmon and halibut. At least warm them up in a little bit of oil or butter to make them mailable and extra tasty. The salsa is weak and there wasn't anything spectacular I'd use to tickle my tastebuds into action. The fish was delicious, tasty and fresh. My mother kept saying, "This is the best Cod I've ever had." We kept correcting her though, "it's halibut!" When I come again, I'm going to get one of the plates and avoid the tortilla disaster. read more

This is such a great spot!! You can tell what started out as a food truck, became successful and expanded in such a beautiful way!! You order at the main window and get your number, head to find a spot at one of the many tables either outside in the open or inside a tent with heaters. Then you can head up to the bar cart that has plenty of options; from seltzers, beer, wine and cocktails. Lots of local options - even the whiskey. The crab cake has a kick to it, but it was delicious and didn't fall a part. The Halibut fish was also very good, delicious batter and the fish was still juicy. The fries were delicious - nice and flavorful with a great crisp. So glad we made the decision to stop and enjoy our meal here! read more

I got the 3 taco combo because I wanted to try everything. I loved it all, but I was so sad I ate the halibut taco first because it was my absolute favorite so even though everything was good, everything else pales in comparison to the halibut! The best place to eat in Juneau hands down! I ate here 3 times (every day) during my stay. You order first, get a number and then they will deliver your food to your table. I tried the taco sampler first (beer battered halibut, blackened rockfish and breaded salmon for $16.25) , then the halibut and chips ($24), and the halibut tacos (3 for $19.50) and halibut cake ($4.50) on my last day. Make sure you don't miss the condiment bar - they have great local hot sauces available from Barnacle Foods - my favorite was the Serrano Bullwhip Kelp & Serrano hot sauce and the Habanero hot sauce. You can grab a beer while you wait for your food as well. Solid spot in Juneau, I hope to be back one day! read more

A few options for fish and chips. I went the panko breaded salmon, which was the def right choice for me. They also had rockfish and halibut beer battered options. I saw them on someone sampler plate and they looked pretty damn good. The fries are seasoned and the tarter sauce is top notch. They make it from scratch. We came into town on the way to our fishing lodge adventure and happened by this place after we'd already eaten at a much more touristy place. We vowed to try it on the way back through town at the end of our trip. Boy, were we glad we did! Dave's was a no frills truck where you order then meander up a bit to a covered seating area. There are a few other food trucks that have made home alongside Deckhand Dave's, and there are two bars on either side of the seating areas. Also a super cool champagne place. Our group highly recommends the Halibut tacos with a side of Dirty Fries. The pieces of fish are huge and the beer batter is just right. But after three tacos, you'll still have room- that's where the Dirty Fries come in. Yummy fries- possibly with a light beer batter, a creamy chipotle sauce, green onions and I think a white sauce- these are beautiful!! Wash it down with an amber beer or glass of prosecco and it was a great lunch. The only thing I would suggest is get a member of your party to stake claim to a table with the fireplace. You can only achieve a Perfect five stars on yelp for your business if you are indeed "best in show" and they had the BEST fried fish. They use Alaskan rockfish, salmon or halibut. All local. All sustainable. I tried their fish tacos plus the fish and chips. So pleasantly surprised by the crispness, freshness and flavor. I very highly recommend either of those dishes! I'm so sad I wasn't able to try more because the halibut cakes and various fries sound so darn good. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in Juneau! Just the whole vibe of this place was so chill, you pick food up at their food truck, pair it with some beer or champs, then sit in their outdoor area, chatting with friends, or up along the sidewalk and people watch. Fish tacos that do actually live up to expectation despite the super-touristy environment near the cruise docks. Halibut was perfectly flaky, rockfish was nicely blackened without being overseasoned. Fish and cabbage were both very fresh. Came out fast too. read more

The salmon tots were so delicious and flavorful. The sampler tacos had fried halibut, fried salmon, and blackened rockfish. They were honestly all delicious but my favorite was the blackened rockfish, but I do feel like blackened fish is always the most flavorful. The fish was so so fresh and delicious. The trash bear comes with blackened halibut on dirty fries and was delicious. It actually came with a lot of fish and the fries were nice and crispy. Our cruise stopped in Juneau for the day and this spot popped up on Yelp after searching "gluten free". Lo and behold, they have gluten and dairy free options! And they're DELICIOUS! It is a cute lil food truck located in town with a few others trucks including a bar; along with them is an area of heated tents with plenty of seating. It's a super cute and cozy spot and feels like you are getting the Juneau experience. The employees were are all super nice, helpful, and accommodating. It was pretty fast as well and they bring the order out to you. We had a large group and they got it all right! The blackened rockfish tacos were some of the best fish tacos I've ever had--seriously. Gluten free and dairy free without the crema, they were full of flavor, fresh, and so freakin' yummy. I actually ended up getting some to-go later in the day before getting back on the ship. The rest of my group got just about everything: salmon tots and halibut cakes, the fish taco trio, halibut chowder, a halibut and chips, trashy fries and one trash bear. I was so incredibly fortunate to get to tour so many different places in Alaska during my visit, but I am not exaggerating when I say that Deckhand Dave's may have been in my top 3 (if not my 1st) culinary experiences throughout my entire trip. Not only is Juneau a beautiful, storybook place, but the weather on this day was wonderful. We made the walk up to this spot on a recommendation from a local and grabbed a beer at a different food truck and then got in line. We ordered the taco trio with salmon, whitefish and one other that I'm forgetting. Absolutely sublime. Possibly the best fish tacos I've ever had in my entire life. We also ordered the salmon tots. Now most people reading this won't know this about me, but two of my very favorite things are tots and salmon. So to combine tots with the world's best salmon was an out of body experience...not to be dramatic haha! I mean look at that pink! This was the first time during the trip that we were really able to sit back and take a deep breath/enjoy our surroundings. So this is one of those cases where I was entirely happy with the quality of the food, but I wasn't entirely with the *price* - I'd argue, the pricier something is, the more it has to live up to it. Granted, I'd also found the place literally 2 1/2 years earlier, in preparing for the cruise I thought we'd be going on in 2020 (which didn't happen for obvious reasons, nor the rescheduled one in 2021 - we finally made it a few months ago), so I'd also just had a long time to look forward to trying it... but still, $16 for 3 tacos, they either have to be large, or the best tacos ever. They weren't that large, but I had heard they *were* basically the best tacos ever. Anyway, verdict is, they're definitely not very big (think like a couple bites each, honestly), but they are pretty tasty. Not mind-blowing, not the best fish tacos I've had in my life... in the list of places I'd make sure to go back to if I were back in Alaska, this wouldn't necessarily be one of them, or not for their long-awaited fish tacos, anyway. They were pretty tasty (especially the blackened one), and other than the tortilla, you could tell it was all made fresh, but they're not necessarily worth the price. Probably the best fried fish in Juneau, but I dunno about Alaska (I *wish* my job were to find the best fried fish in Alaska...) Definitely wouldn't be the best fish tacos in California, though. Funny enough, though, while I had been the most excited about the tacos, we also had to try an order of "salmon tots", cause we were just very curious what they were. They're exactly what they sound like: little fried balls of salmon, as the menu says, like crab cakes, but smaller and with salmon instead of crab. They're great, they're *totally* worth 8 bucks - I shared an order with my wife, which was definitely the wrong call. I wouldn't go back to Juneau specifically to come here, but if I *were* back in Juneau (presumably on another cruise, which I absolutely *would* recommend, it was completely gorgeous everywhere we went!), I would probably come back here, just get a halibut cake and a whole order of salmon tots to myself, and skip the tacos. (Great tartar sauce, too.) One good thing about their setup - they *do* have the ability to sell beer - including, when we were there a few months ago, a great local craft cider, also totally reasonably priced. Funny how many things cider goes well with - fried fish, for sure. For whatever reason, they have a separate line you have to stand in to order beer vs ordering food, but both lines moved pretty fast, so it wasn't the end of the world. Just glad there were two of us, though, since when it's busy (for instance, when a bunch of us have just gotten off a cruise ship), there isn't necessarily a huge amount of seating, so I was happy I could stand in line for cider and had someone holding our seats. read more
