We want to love this place so we keep trying but just can't. The positives are that the place is beautiful inside and out and it has nice docking for boats and a very pleasant view. We typically sit at the bar. I can't count how many different bartenders there have been over the years but with the exception of maybe three times (out of more than 15-20), the service has been poor. Either the selection process is poor or there is a lack of training. This past week we had a young gal bartending. She was very friendly but could not manage the bar service and there were only 6 people at the bar. Our group of 4 was there to eat and drink. In nearly 3 hours, we could only get her attention for 2 drinks each. And we were sitting at the bar! She was busy filling drink orders for tables and visibly irritated that we flagged her down after 45 minutes of waiting for a second drink. We ordered 3 things off the happy hour menu and all 3 were terrible. Dishes that we have all eaten there before. The orange chicken was so over cooked, we couldn't even bite into it! We left after not being able to get a third drink - after waiting 27 minutes for her to bring the check we asked for. I kid you not. We timed it because everything else had gone so wrong. How does this happen while sitting at a bar when the bartender is three feet away? They need some serious management changes or we are going to see this big beautiful building up for sale. read more

While visiting from Washington state, we dropped in for lunch on the way to the airport and my goodness I'm so glad we did. Our server was Emmalynn, and she was wonderful. Very nice, attentive, and even offered to buy us a dessert. We both had the triple tail fish and chips, and it was excellent. Great wine selection, very clean, and terrific views. It would be our regular goto place if we lived nearby. read more

WOW! We had a wonderful dinner experience. Ate outside on the covered patio on a beautiful evening. We had a 5 minute wait for our table, not bad. A short wait for our server, Noah, to greet us. He was friendly and didn't miss a step. Drinks were good as were the oysters on the half shell. The restaurant was very busy and service seemed a little slow from the kitchen. I had the live Maine lobster and my husband had the Grouper grilled. Both were terrific as were the sides. Prices were very reasonable. I have not seen lobster on the regular part of a menu in years. Another rewarding dinner at Deep Lagoon. In addition to the always thoughtful and delicious meal, the service takes the experience one step higher. On this night Nyssa was our server. She was friendly, accommodating and checked in frequently with a quiet grace. There is a subtle attention to each detail: clean restaurant, clean restrooms, thoughtful menu with fresh product, servers who are well dressed, informed and friendly. I loved this restaurant the first three times we went but last night was a disaster! It's been a year, so not sure what changed but the food was dry and overpriced, the service was terrible (we had to ask for our server to get us refills 3 times, and then finally another server helped us), and the prices were very high given the quality of the meal. We stopped in on a recommendation from a friend and were not disappointed. I appreciate having a separate gluten free menu and the waiter was knowledgeable of what I could and could not eat. We sat on the outside porch overlooking the water and enjoyed a great meal. The price was right for what we got- I had a nice mahi over sweet potato mash and Brussels sprouts. My husband is a landlubber and said the ribeye was delicious. It was happy hour so we both enjoyed a drink and Greek salad prior to our meal - everything was spectacular. 2nd visit to Deep Lagoon for lunch. We had a great view of the inter coastal from the 2nd floor outdoor dining area. Service was spot on and she was super friendly. Not sure if this a normal service when the water came out our waitress brought a plate of lemons greatly appreciated! I had the tuna sandwich with coleslaw and mashed potatoes. The mashed potatoes are legit real very good. It's hard to top my grandmother's coleslaw this Deep Lagoons slaw is up there has a nice 'n light creamy flavor. The tuna I had asked for seared it arrived grilled that is not how you prepare seared tuna...this dish was a disappointment unfortunately. For the table we had the calamari appetizer it was ok wish it was fresher to the point of the calamari melting in your mouth. My friend ordered the Shrimp Po'boy she enjoyed however she loved the sweet potato mashed best. read more

This restaurant is our favorite one to go to! We love heading there on the weekends by boat. The food is always fabulous and brought to you steaming hot! I normally get their salmon but I also love their hogfish. Their crab Rangoon appetizer is great too! My husband enjoys their snow crabs and their stone crabs when in season. we both say they make the best New England chowder! The service is always perfection. We highly recommend this place and appreciate all our servers and Aiden, who is one of their managers. The view over the water is delightful. read more

Great food and service. It can get hectic at dinner time. Great food with a view over the back bay. Definitely go for the outside deck and view. I had the spicy pasta dish and asked to have it less spicy as the waiter highlighted its pretty spicy. It was still a little too much red pepper flakes, otherwise we all had great meals. I have eaten here twice and the food was great and great setting. Tonight I had a very disturbing experience. I had a reservation and arrived on time. I was showed to a table outside. All the outside tables had a covering over the screen but not this one. It was broken and by the way it was very cold. We tried sitting there and it was just too cold. We were told that was the only table and the next reservation was 1 hr 45 mins later. What was amazing was the total lack of concern of the hostesses. Just a kind of tough luck attitude. When we asked about the bar she indicated it was first come first serve. No effort to find us a place at the bar. No service recovery attempts. We found seats at the bar and had a terrific experience with the bartender who promised to create a positive exoerence and she did. You need to teach your hostesses some service recovery techniques. read more

The food took awhile to come out and that was only after we asked how much longer as we watched other tables receive their food. Temperature of food lukewarm. The sides we shared, asparagus green beans and brussell sprouts were also awful. The sprouts were hard and flavorless and the asparagus was lacking flavor and undercooked. I found a new local spot just off Casey Key with incredible food and views. You cannot miss this huge building on the water right before the bridge. There are massive stairs that lead up to to the second story restaurant (if needing an elevator there is one located on the ground floor just inside the front door). Upon entering there is a fresh seafood counter and a huge bar inside. There is indoor/outdoor seating, but all of the sliding doors are open so it feels like you are outside no matter where you sit! We were seated around 4ish and were surprised to see they have a great happy hour menu from 2-5pm with small plates and drinks. I will take a $4 mango claw at happy hour any time! We were greeted by a server who advised our server Noah would be around shortly. By the time he arrived, with a huge smile, we knew we wanted several of the small plates. We ordered crab rangoon, mussels sorrento & volcano shrimp! Also added a small caesar salad and lobster bisque. The dishes were all fresh and had great flavor. Crab rangoon is one of my favorites so I do judge this harsher and I will say it was delicious! I suggest coming in during happy hour so you can try these small plates and beat the rush (if you are here during season). The menu had a really great selection. We decided on the lobster vodka pasta to share. Every bite had lobster chunks and overall the dish was fairly light for a pasta dish. For me and the husband, we wanted a more rich sauce so we kind of used the bisque as an additional sauce. However, my mother in law thought it was perfect and the lack of richness made it easier to eat while not feeling so full at the end. I have seen some of the reviews regarding the service. I admit it took a bit longer, but everything was rung up correctly and the food came out quick. Just remember November to April is season! I hope this place does well, because there are so many things we have left to try! When you arrive just come with patience and enjoy the view. read more

It's the first day of winter and flights up north are canceled or delayed because of a winter storm, but today we'll tell you about being on the spectacular Gulf intracoastal waterway off channel Marker 33, Blackburn Point Road at the Deep Lagoon Restaurant. This place is a new Casey Key hotspot that opened up in 2022. Their mantra is, "a fresh twist on coastal casual". You'll find they deliver on that statement. Deep Lagoon has a terrific raw bar with oysters, clams, and shrimp. Their menu includes all kinds of seafood; grouper, snapper, swordfish, tuna, Tripletail, etc. I had a grilled grouper sandwich with french fries. It was cooked to perfection. My wife and I also shared a spinach and artichoke dip, which comes with tricolor tortilla chips , delicious! I scarf down the meal with a couple of domestic beers... Perfect. Note - Try to get there early because happy hour ends at 5pm. Service is always spot on. I think the crew is well trained, and knows how to handle the patrons. There is a well stocked bar indoors and a huge outdoor dining area facing the waterway. And if you live here, it's worth being on their mailing list, they run, frequent promotions, giving you plenty of incentive to come back. So when you're in the area, either by land or by water, this spot is worth visiting for cocktails, seafood, and stunning sunsets. Cheers! read more

OMG awful awful awful... the appetizer of Lobster & corn queso.... Disgusting.. I actually did not taste any lobster. Very few pieces of corn but mainly chopped red bell peppers . Then I ordered the crabcake sandwich with the summer squash medley, honestly if I could post a picture, you could see how very displeased I was. I counted 5 pieces of summer squash that wet so small along with 85% huge chunks of red sauteed onions along with the remaining bell peppers. Hey all for $26 .. the crab cake was so small, it was quite embarrassing that they actually allow that out of the kitchen. 5 star: Loved our waitress, Laura Lee. She was friendly, patient and efficient. No small matter when you are dealing with a table of 11. 3 star: ambience. Practically every restaurant in the lemon Bay/Venice/Sarasota area is on the water. The water view was so so. 0ne star: food. The hogfish was frankly awful. Bland, tasteless, just a big blob of white on a blob of mash potatoes. Inedible. Chili rub triple tail was also equally as bland as the hogfish. The clam chowder and seafood gumbo was good however. Again, loved our waitress, Laura Lee. But we will not be back because of the food. read more

I never write these things. Yesterday evening I was part of a party of eight that had dinner on the outside veranda of Deep Lagoon in Osprey. We took advantage of a buy one, get one fish dinner that required each diner to have a drink as part of the deal. Fair enough. My huge complaint is that I asked for a whiskey on the rocks, knowing I would get a well whiskey but that's alright too. I have no idea what I got, but it wasn't whiskey, it was extremely sweet, watered down, and tasted horrible. The waitress returned it, but the result was the same. My fellow diners had the same experience. The drink, one shot in volume was $9.00. We then asked for a scotch. The bar tender said they done have "bar scotch". Our bill showed the Whiskey as Seagrams 7. It clearly was not. Bad treatment. Clearly, they were trying to get away with inferior drinks. My wife ordered a Jai Alai beer but this was also not genuine. This is a real turn off for the customers. They are doing themselves a disservice. A special lunch for my guests birthday. Sloppy service, missed orders and a menu item poorly defined. Great location and ambiance, reasonable prices. Looked at the menu before hand and knew I was going to have the Tropical Salad. Menu says sautéed shrimp and scallops OVER baby greens.... When delivered, the scallops and shrimp were in some sort of white cream sauce in a baking dish. Not at all what I expected. That said the food was good ~ just not as healthy as I would have liked nor advertised. Based on my choice, my guest had the same thing and they graciously did double shrimp and no scallops. My guest ordered three oysters. I expected them to come early. After people seated around us who came later were eating, I had to get up from the table to find our waited Fred to say I am surprised it is taking so long. Salads came and I asked where are the oysters? "They will be right up!" Followed by same waiter coming back and apologizing that he never put the order for oysters in. At this point we said, forget the oysters. Saw waiter talking to the manager, she came back and instead of addressing the issues asked "is the food good? Is everything ok?" So I could restate food took to long and the oysters never came. Then came a piece of chocolate cake that covered a full dinner plate, as a gratuity for the birthday celebration. We each had one bite and took it to go--not sure who too. Followed by the manager coming back again and giving us a free drink or dessert card should we come back again. Since I don't drink alcohol and don't eat desserts this did little for me. Better choice would have been to comp one of the salads (cheaper than two drinks I'm guessing!) It's not season, so the restaurant was empty. I would try again because there are lots of good choices and the food was good. I would validate how things are served as the fish was not sautéed and presented OVER the salad. read more

Overpriced - Nasty Employees The first time we went there I was screamed at by a server because she almost hit me with a tray of food while I was going to the restroom. Who puts a restroom in the path of the kitchen doors?? The elevator smelled like urine and had several beer bottles and drinks left behind. We gave this another shot; this time we went for a late lunch last Sunday. We asked to sit outside and was told that is only for reserved tables. Jokingly was asked can we a reserve a table and the hostess gave us a dirty look. Then I asked where she could seat us because if I did not like where the table was, I was not going to stay. She would not tell me and said just following the other hostess. I stayed at the hostess desk until I knew where the exact table was and then she again in a nasty voice asked me to follow the others. I told here I was not moving until I knew exactly where the table was. Again she gave me a nasty look. She did seat us close to outside. The whole time we were there I counted at least 6 tables open outside for the entire duration of our visit. SO again why could we not sit there???? We ordered a variety of food and for the most part it was either under cooked or tasteless. I asked for blackened shrimp tocos that had no seasoning, when served they were almost undercooked and cold. Drinks were great, but again so overpriced even when it was "Happy Hour". Restaurant has a great View, but I would not even go back there is you paid me. We have lived in the Venice/Sarasota area for almost 10 years and have visited the area for over 25. There a so many better restaurants to go to that don't have an attitude!!!! read more

New spot I have been cycling past and watching be built. Went for my birthday dinner!!! Plenty of parking and free (yippee!!) We had a reservation and it looked like we need it! Greeted immediately at the front desk and seated promptly. The place is of course clean and the kitchen/prep area windowed and visible and bar all very organized but also busy and productive. Our seats were tremendous, we went outside on this cool and comfortable evening (Aug 16th) believe it or not!! So here is where things deteriorate and I will not drone on about it too much. (okay a little bit and this is days later) I am leaving many details out. Service by "Jxxxx" was absolutely awful. Slow, massively forgetful, drinks forgotten multiple times (much lost revenue here as well - our bar bill would have easily been double and the gratuity also higher right??) we refused the last drink which came AFTER the meal had finished (we had asked TWICE?) I asked for a glass for my bear in a can, that never came. I used my double shot water glass instead. (I got a glass from another sever who I flagged down when our soup spoons arrived unwashed or unacceptable. We asked our server for them but he forgot? ) PAINFUL We both got a soup. Mine a gumbo, and my wife the lobster bisque. The gumbo was pretty flavorful and the ingredients varied and appropriate. arrived hot/steaming and good!!! (except for unclean spoon, so when I got to the soup it had cooled (frown)) The lobster bisque was disappointing and likely a bulk or 'canned' and thin and no real lobster or other ingredients. It was almost flavorless and I did not check it out when it arrived but the creamy soup was cold like gazpacho (frown) by the time we reported our unclean spoons (food on them both as if they were used?) and many minutes later from the other waitstaff got the replacements. We should have sent the soups back but then the entrees would have been arriving (which they did before we finished the soups???) The two entrees were a bit pricey at $35 to $39. Our expectations were fairly high. My Hogfish chiefs specialty was good. The fish did not seem 'fresh' and flaky almost as if thawed and the meat was crumbly. It was not very hot when it arrived. Flavored nicely and lots of veggies on a side. The broccoli was murdered and mushy but the rest okay although - cool temperature-wise . There was a red smashed potato scoop under the fish that was tasty and loaded with butter. a little too rich for me but I did taste it. 5/10 The Grouper chief special my wife got was a very tasty fish and well prepared.....twice as good as the hogfish. A nice piece. The side of veggies and bed of rice were nicely cooked (the asparagus of note! el dente and tasty) This was a good fish and entrée. All in all a good visit, not great. maybe some bugs to work out and some service issues for sure. We will come back in a few months for drinks and maybe some other lighter fare items. read more

This was an elegant spot with great views of the sunset as the dining room was on the 2nd floor. There were plenty of tables and booths along with a spacious bar. There was a large menu with plenty of options including raw bar options. The service was appreciated, and the food came out in a timely manner. They started the meal off with some bread and very light cinnamon butter. The butter did not too much of a cinnamon flavor, but just enough. The bread came out hot and went well with the very spreadable butter. For appetizers, the clams Sorrento ($15) and the shrimp, fish, and scallop ceviche ($15) was ordered. The clams were simmered in a white wine, garlic, lemon, and butter broth with diced tomatoes. There was also grilled crostini for dipping. There were about 12 clams present, but 2 of them were closed so they were no good. It seems like that should be checked before serving the dish. Regarding the dish that was able to be eaten, it was tasty. The broth was a tad salty, but nothing out of control. The ceviche was served with tortilla chips. This was very good. There were plenty pieces of fish, and they were marinated nicely. For an entrée, I had the chili rub tripletail ($33). The fish was rubbed with sweet chili and secret spices. It was topped with an avocado salsa and served over yellow rice and asparagus. This was alright. The tripletail was cooked appropriately, but there was not much seasoning. The avocado salsa helped but did not overwhelm me. It was a little disappointing. I also tried the mahi thermidor. The sherry wine cream was great, but when it was gone, the mahi was dry.
