I stopped by today and picked up some goodies for my family, which includes myself and another who cannot do both gluten or dairy (and then some regular gluten eaters too). So I bought lemon blueberry mini-breads (they taste like cake), vegan chocolate chip cookies, ginger chocolate cookies, and pumpkin chocolate chip cookies. See photos. The quality cannot be beaten!! They are absolutely mouth-watering. I have been a customer for a long time by purchasing items from Sunset Foods and Whole Foods in the past because the store is far away. But today I made the trip from the suburbs. I hadn't visited since before covid and so now they do not allow people to enter: you must window-shop and then the attendant will come out twice: once to take your order and then again to bring you your items. It is a little confusing because just approaching the store, there will a lot of people milling about. I didn't know what was going on and I tried to walk into the store, but quickly read the sign. I didn't know who was in line or what was going on because there were no employees outside. I window-shopped and then ended up sitting on a bench because I didn't know the rules. It seems like what would be great would be some kind of a "road map" for customers like 1) window shop 2) line up 3) place order 4) pay and receive order. I think the window display could be a little more robust, maybe a stacked display case to take advantage of vertical space. I think a kiosk or some QR code to place an order might be great. You could even put a stand or podium that would give employees a more official spot to be. It seems like they have to do a lot of coming and going. In fact, some fun/witty vinyl/chalkboard lettering on the window glass could be a great way to communicate to customers how to shop. Anyway, I love the food - thanks again! :) read more

Defloured has the best vegan desserts I've ever tried. You have to order their vegan cupcakes. They're pretty small -- you'll want to have two -- but boy are they good. I don't know how they get their cake so moist without using eggs in the batter; most vegan cakes are pretty dry. The frosting is delicious, too. I was parking and saw a crowd of people hovering around a storefront like they were waiting for doors to open for the Nordstrom Semi Annual Sale! Thus, I had to walk over and see what all the fuss was about. Tons of people were waiting outside in the cold for pastries. I looked at the menu on the window and noticed all the pastries are gluten free and they have a large selection of vegan options! There were so many vegan options that I bared the cold trying to make a decision. I settled on the vegan brownie. The staff were all friendly and processed orders quickly. I can't believe it's taken me so long to write ANOTHER review of Defloured's treats. My wife and I eloped and wanted a little cake to celebrate our day. We decided to go with lemon cupcakes with vanilla buttercream and we ate them after our trip to the courthouse! Moist. Delicious. I was eating at the Rewired Restaurant when I noticed one of their cookies packaged individually for sale. It said vegan chocolate ginger cookie, gluten free. I have never found either vegan or gluten free pastry or cookies worth have a second time. I tried one anyway. I was amazed. I have no memory of ever having a better ginger cookie vegan or not than that one. I love ginger cookies and am so glad that I tried one. Holy gluten free goodness, Batman! This place is amazing! We went on a short field trip to Defloured today to order my birthday cake and sample some goodies. I can't believe I never tried Defloured before - what in the world is wrong with me (aside from Celiacs)?!? My birthday cake was easily ordered with the guidance of a super helpful employee (maybe the owner) who clearly shared my love of all thing chocolate and peanut butter. We also ordered a few things to try out until next weeks cake fest: a vegan oat cream pie, a Nutella sandwich cookie with espresso buttercream, a pumpkin chocolate chip cookie and a Make it Rain bar. We brought the box home and hid on the back patio from the prying eyes of our virtually schooling teenagers. With cups of fresh coffee and a large knife in hand, we meticulously sampled and ranked each treat. My husband and I had different opinions on what was the best item (I voted for the oat cream pie and he voted for the Nutella sandwich cookie), but we truly loved them all. Since he doesn't have Celiacs and actually knows the difference, I can say with great certainty that we will never go to another 'regular' bakery again. Defloured is that fantastic. My goodness, I was recently diagnosed with Celiac and the selection and taste of these baked goods put most standard bakeries to shame. I got a peanut butter chocolate chip cookie sandwich, a gingerbread chocolate chip cookie sandwich, and a chocolate cupcake with chocolate icing. These were some of the best tasting desserts I have ever had, all without gluten. I paid about $15 for the three large desserts. I asked if they had any bread for sale, they said no, and I believe they ran out the day I went (around 5 PM) Defloured is located in Andersonville, an absolutely amazing neighborhood. You order outside as you can look at the day's selections from the window, and they will bring your order along with a card reader; "the tipping screen is optional" I don't believe there is any designated seating, nor do they serve beverages as far as I could tell, I could be wrong. Definitely more of a to-go establishment. I'll be back next week, lol! read more

Yes, I'm a vegan. Yes, I eat plants. I eat lots of plants. Every day. Yes, I care about my health. But you know what? Sometimes, you just gotta have something sweet and delicious. Not some crappy Hershey's bar, but something that is quality, that satisfies that little craving a middle-aged girl like me has. I admit, I never considered visiting Defloured, because I thought it offered strictly gluten-free bakery items. That, to me, meant everything had butter and eggs, and there's no way I'm going to start consuming that stuff again. Then, I parked on Balmoral Avenue, walked past Defloured's big front window, and saw the magic word "vegan" on some items. An irresistible force pulled me in. I bought cupcakes. I bought an oatmeal cookie sandwich with a peanut-butter flavored filling. And I indulged, over the course of two days. OMG. SO GOOD! A week later, that same irresistible force drew my car to Balmoral Street once again, and I ended up with a slice of vegan chocolate cake. It is huge. It is sweet. It is delicious. It is enough to hold me for a couple days. I am blissful. I'm not going to make Defloured a regular stop -- no, really, I'm not, because I am all too capable of getting carried away -- but I am going to be stopping in every so often, just trying whatever vegan treats they have that day. Some people should absolutely just get out of customer service. I dropped by the bakery the other day to get some treats for myself and a few friends. You can't walk into the shop, the treats can be seen through the window and associates come outside to get your order and go back inside to fill it. It was quite cold, maybe 6 degrees outside. There was a middle-aged woman who came outside to take my order for a handful of goods (I'm 40ish myself). She seemed a little scattered as I made my requests. I asked some questions about the ingredients in one of the baked goods I saw and she didn't seem able to really answer in detail, but I left it alone and she went inside to fill the order. There were other associates helping people beside me who were pretty thoroughly answering questions like that so I just listened to those answers and at the time didn't think too hard about it. Shortly after she left and was working on it on the other side of the window, I noticed a back table of goods, one of which was unlabeled. Another associate came outside and there wasn't anyone else in line waiting for help, so I asked him about the unlabeled treat. With his description it sounded delicious, and I asked if he could tell the woman who was helping me to add that to the order, since I couldn't walk in and ask for myself. I pointed her out, he said it wasn't a problem. There was another couple waiting like me for orders in process to be finished who asked him about the same item and he offered to add it for them as well, but they decided against it. I was waiting about 10 minutes. When she came outside with my order, she said "You pulled a fast one on me," as in, I lied, cheated or deceived her in some kind of way. I asked her to clarify what exactly that meant and she went on to say that "you added something to the order" in a way as if that was... wrong to do? As if I was unfairly taking advantage of someone? This response was absolutely perplexing to me, as I could see she was not far into filling the order when I made the request and you don't get a total or pay until they come back outside to hand it over. I cannot imagine what issue she could have with this, I have been here before and am far from the only person who has seen another item and asked for it to be added. The point seems to be that we look through the window, see things we want, ask for them, pay and go on our way, which my response. Would she rather I waited until she came back out in the 6 degree weather to add another thing that would taken another 10 minutes to finish? On top of that, something ended up missing from my order that I discovered when I got home (that thankfully the bakery confirmed I wasn't charged for). I should have given in to my impulse to cancel the order and leave without taking or purchasing anything. If she had kept her passive aggressive comments to herself I wouldn't have even raised an eyebrow about the rest. Sometimes someone is not on their game with responding to specific questions, and sometimes an item ends up missing, not a big deal. But when you don't have your *ish together to begin with and use words that accuse a customer of doing something deceptive when they are making a routine request, that leads to a bad review. read more

I truly couldn't have been happier with our experience using Defloured as our cake/dessert vendor for our wedding this year. I have celiac disease and also have an intolerance to dairy so was initially concerned with being able to find a wedding cake that could accommodate my dietary restrictions. All of my worries were completely diminished as soon as I reached out to Defloured. Not only could they accommodate a gluten and dairy free wedding cake, they also have SO MANY other gluten and dairy free dessert options. We ended up getting a small cutting cake for myself and my husband and had a dessert table for everyone else. For the dessert table we chose mini cupcakes, cookies, a brownie and a raspberry crumble bar (my favorite). By far the best gluten free bakery in the city, and even possibly one of the best bakeries in the city in general! The options seemed endless and I had an incredibly hard time choosing what I wanted. In the end I got the salted peanut oatmeal chocolate chip with peanut buttercream sandwich cookie, puck of love (their version of a ding dong), and a pack of the take n' bake cinnamon rolls. Everything was absolutely delicious. I've tried my fair share of gluten free cinnamon rolls and its definitely one of the harder to perfect -- but these were incredibly gooey and shaped up just like a traditional roll. A heart-fluttering giddy kinda love. My first brush with Defloured was a phenomenal red velvet cake that my girlfriend surprised me with at my birthday party. It was a hit with everyone (even those who are skeptical of gluten-free)! Seriously. They all cleaned their plates and raved about the cake. I have to say that it was the first time I've even had a cake for my birthday in several years and it felt like a big deal. I stopped by in-person about a month ago to see what they had. I have been searching for my absolute favorite baked good, the cream puff, since saying goodbye to gluten 6 years ago. I had not found one until entering Defloured. Needless to say I was excited. Their cream puff did not disappoint! Delicious puff and even more delicious cream. It's a big size too, so you only need one to get your fill. I didn't think I would be so amazed, in addition to being taken back to a childhood treat by stopping into this place. Everything looks amazing but the Frosted oatmeal cookie was my first choice. Taking it a bite into the semi- soft, yummy frosted oatmeal cookie made me feel like I was 12 again. It was Mind-blowing good. My second choice was the apple crumb coffee cake. Again very amazing. With my Celiac brother's birthday quickly approaching, I was under the gun to find him a gluten free birthday cake that didn't taste anything like the GF sweets from Isle #2 at the local grocer. I wanted to hit it out of the ball park for him. Not gift him a dry, cardboard tasting cake on what should be *his* day! Having tried and loved Defloured's lemon bars that they make in their bakery in Chicago and keep stocked at the Standard Market here in Naperville, they were the first people I thought of. Surely, they would make great cakes too! Of course, I went straight to Yelp. Glancing over Defloured's great reviews, I immediately saw the two words that seemed to jump out with flashing lights -- "Carrot Cake". Yay!! His favorite. :) I emailed Johanna, hoping but not expecting that she'd be able to get me a 9" carrot cake in time. Oh, but she could. :) I could write an entire review on just the customer service I received from Defloured. I loved the convenience of being able to use paypal to pay for the cake online. Johanna was an absolute pleasure to work with. Prompt with her replies and very accommodating with her schedule. I had really sick kids at home and a husband who was driving from a job site in MI to pick the cake up. Johanna was even willing to meet him after hours, should he have gotten stuck in snarled traffic. A very generous offer that did not go unappreciated! My kids have been tricked into eating bad tasting GF foods too many times to not be suspicious when we hand them a "safe" dessert. They eyed it hesitantly. I took the first bite and...yum!..I assured them that this was definitely NOT a factory made cake you'd find at your local Super Target. Nor was it a cake made from a GF Betty Crocker box! This was legit. My lips claimed that luscious forkful and then my mouth immediately demanded more. A very moist carrot cake, loaded with plump raisins and layers of perfect cream cheese frosting. No way would I have guessed it was GF! So good in fact, my eyes flew open this morning at 5 am and my first thoughts went straight to the leftover cake still boxed in the fridge. Highly unusual because my mind in the morning is usually not on leftovers or even on food. :) I snuck down to my kitchen in the dark and sliced a sliver of it off and ate it while emailing Johanna a "thank you" for everything she had done. So days after the bakery's response to my first review about the staff non mask compliance, the bakery just so happened to be closed for several days due to a "covid scare." In an attempt to give it one last chance I made a purchase upon reopening as I truly want to support this place. The crumb cake and millionaire bar tasted stale (freezer burnt type taste is the best way to describe). Also were dry. THEN a couple weeks later I walk by to see ANOTHER baker unmasked. After being assured by the owner it had been addressed in my last post. No matter the state of COVID and vaccinations progress, it's the Governor's order that masks be worn inside food establishments. I am utterly disappointed and can say I will never be able to support this place again after they have such strict protocols for covid but don't follow them themselves. read more
