We had originally planned to dine at the Courtyard Cafe, but discovered it had recently closed its doors forever. Fortunately, a worker at a nearby establishment recommended Deja Vu, among several others. Although finding the restaurant wasn't too difficult, parking in the downtown are is somewhat limited and finding a space nearby was a minor challenge. Be patient and check out the side streets where not only is parking more plentiful, it is also free for two hours. The downtown area is something of a magnet for the local homeless population, but they seem harmless enough. The cafe is situated in what was originally a turn-of-the-century (i.e., early 1900's) hotel and the decor is both tasteful and true to its roots. The booths are large and comfortable; the tables are old-fashioned, wooden, and boast comfortable seating as well. I cannot stress enough how friendly and helpful the wait staff are. Jaime was our server, but a couple of the others checked in on us periodically as well, but not to the extent of becoming bothersome. However, ultimately it is the food itself that recommends this establishment. It is delicious, the portions generous (although not overly so), and the prices are decent. I ordered "Bill's Special", a light, fluffy homemade biscuit smothered in tasty gravy, accompanied by a pair of scrambled eggs and two generous-sized pork sausage patties. My wife ordered two eggs, scrambled as well, along with a pancake and home fries. It was all so fabulous and a great value at seventeen bucks, not including California's onerous tax. read more

The setting told me to expect food better than the norm, but it was just all right. Not terrible, just all right. We were visiting Redding and my husband selected this restaurant for breakfast. They did not disappoint. Upon learning it was my birthday, they brought a free cinnamon roll for me. The cream cheese frosting was delicious. For our meal, we both ordered the crab Benedict. Lump crab meat, asparagus and roasted red peppers on English muffin with poached egg and hollandaise sauce. WOW! We were in town for a few days and decided to try out Deja Vu for breakfast based on the yelp reviews. It didn't disappoint! We absolutely loved it. The service was fantastic, the portions were perfect and the taste was spot on. We had pancakes and an omelette and before you judge the omelette comes with a choice of pancakes. I would give this place 2.5 stars. The food isn't great, but it's not terrible either. I came here for a weekend lunch. I wasn't feeling like eating breakfast items, so I opted for a cheeseburger with clam chowder (chef's special of the day) while my guest ordered steak salad. The cheeseburger was supposed to be cooked medium, but it ended up being well done. The meat also tasted like they mixed the beef with some starch; it didn't taste like pure beef. The burger also came with pickles and onions. The pickles tasted like they came from those jars you get in the grocery store, but at least they were generous with the amount of pickles. Being a pickle aficionado, I was pleased with this. Overall, the burger was just ok. The clam chowder was surprisingly decent. They put a good amount of potatoes and clam in it. At least it wasn't majority cream and soup. Unfortunately, the steak in the steak salad was salty and chewy. It also had a lot of membrane, so my guest had trouble eating it. The dressing was fine, though. The salad also came with garlic toast. The bread itself was soft and crunchy, but the taste was a little too salty. The service was good, and the atmosphere was nice. It feels like you are at home. The cheeseburger was $12.99 and the steak salad was $15.99. For the price, it wasn't worth it. Overall, I do not recommend the lunch items. I always make time for at least one breakfast stop at Deja Vu when I visit Redding. Their staff is always pleasant and helpful. Stopped here on my drive to Portland for a quick pick-me-up. Great fun espresso flavors that taste better than Starbucks for the same price. The Benedict was very good. The waitresses were so nice and sweet. Good ambiance that was quiet enough to talk to other people but also had enough background noise for a good working environment and felt very lively. What a cute little breakfast joint!! The location itself used to be a hotel so the antique feel was absolutely there. The wait wasn't bad for a party of 10 at around 9am on a Saturday morning. The service was beyond friendly and accommodating. You'll definitely be taken care of. The food was very good! I went with the Deja Vu omelette, mushrooms, tomatoes, bacon and sausage with cheddar cheese on top with a side of hash brown and fruit. Everything was delicious!!! What amazed me the most is that the waitress asked if we wanted to her split the bill a certain way. You never really hear that prior to ordering, ever! Highly recommend if ever in the Redding area. Good food but i'm writing this review because I witnessed a girl get yelled at on the barista side for not taking the trash out in front of a line of customers. Foods good, although I recommend a similar setting like from the hearth which has fresher and better food. Do not support this place. I really enjoy their service and atmosphere. Sometimes there is about a 30 minute wait for a table, but I just grab a coffee from the attached coffee shop. They cater to my children, compliment their little drawings, even supplied some stickers! (I found those attached to random things for a week). They have a really large menu, too. Redding is a must stop place along the Interstate 5 if you are either heading up to Oregon or down California. My friends and I were driving up the state and found this brunch restaurant not too far from the freeway. I believe Deja Vu is split into both a cafe and a brunch spot and we went into the latter for a quick bite. First off, I'll give the waitress who served us a major plus for being friendly. Noticing that we were not locals, she gave her 2 cents on where to go after eating at Redding. She also recommended that we order their famous omelettes and eggs benedict. A sucker for poached eggs, I couldn't resist for good old english muffins with hollandaise sauce. To be more specific, I got the jalapeño benedict. Food came out pretty quickly and definitely satisfied our hunger. However, I was pretty unimpressed by the quality, given the hype this place receives. My benedict was so so, but I was disappointed by the taste. Especially for the jalapeno, it felt like it was severely overcooked and didn't add much to the dish at all. All things considered, I'd probably stop by again if I were in need of food and am in Redding. Deju Vu wasn't bad, but given the price, it wasn't necessarily the best "Bang for your Buck." Just moved into town and wanted to try a local breakfast place and saw good reviews for Deja Vu. My boyfriend and I came in on a Tuesday in the early afternoon and we were seated promptly; before long we were sipping glasses of ice cold water as we browsed the menu options - breakfast served all day, sandwiches, soups, salads, and desserts, not to mention specialty coffees served from the adjoined cafe on the other side. I chose the Lorenz omelette with hash browns and a biscuit; my boyfriend ordered the French toast and bacon with over-hard eggs, as well as an Everything cookie. Our server brought out the cookie first; it was delightfully chewy and hearty, and we picked out flavors and textures of nuts (macadamia?), shredded coconut, sweet raisins, and chocolate chips. Before too long our large plates arrived. My Lorenz omelette was flavorful and savory, with delicious mushrooms, onions, peppers, and sausage grilled and seasoned to perfection, and folded inside a perfectly cooked egg omelette lightly covered with cheddar cheese. The hash browns were cooked to perfection; perfectly crispy on the outside, and deliciously buttery and soft on the inside. The warm biscuit that arrived was the biggest I have ever seen; it was about the size of a small grapefruit. The biscuit was piping hot, as if it had just come out of the oven, and was served with whipped butter and honey. The portions were generous - I only was able to finish half of my meal. My boyfriend enjoyed his brunch also - perfectly crisp (not burnt) bacon, delicious, fluffy French toast smothered with melted butter and maple syrup, and over-hard eggs that had slightly soft yolks cooked to order. Speaking of service Debbie was our server the last couple of times here and she is fantastic! She never forgets us no matter how busy the place is and always has a smile and a warm greeting! VEGANS...Stop! I was in Redding for my husband's surgery. I ran into Deja Vu for lunch because it was listed as a place to get vegan food. The only vegan dish they offered was Vegetable Scramble, which when asked, was a fancy way of saying, vegetables stir fried in oil. Chipotle would be better than that. read more

This place is great! When we walked in there was no hostess to put our name on the waitlist but there were people waiting around. We came by and they were two large parties ahead of us on the waitlist as well as around five parties of 2. They told us the wait till be around 30 minutes. I grabbed a menu to show my husband while we were waiting so our wait didn't seem that long. They finally seated the two of us at a large booth. The waitress was very friendly. There was a nice huge chalkboard with three today's specials. I started off ordering the hot PB Man drink which can come blended, iced, or hot. My husband ordered a strawberry smoothie. The fruit smoothies are made with frozen fruit except for the strawberry smoothie which is made with fresh strawberries since it's strawberry season. The PB Man tasted nothing like peanut butter. It just tasted like a mocha but it was still good. The strawberry smoothie tasted a bit watery, but it was fresh and no added sugars. Just a light strawberry flavor. For the food, we ordered a bacon avocado egg Benedict and a chicken fried steak. The chicken fried streak was not overly huge but a good portion and it was so tender and good! The eggs were made perfectly. The hash browns were moist but the top later was perfectly crispy. Even the English muffins were perfectly buttered. Service was great! We are very satisfied. The women's bathroom had two stalls. One was huge but didn't have toilet paper on the roll. But there was a roll on the handicapped handle bar. One of the best breakfast places I have ever been to. The coffee (cappuccino) is amazing, the breakfast plates are tasty and well presented. The portions are big but they don't give you that sense you get at fast food places. This is much more refined without being pretentious. I highly recommend it. read more
