We'd just gotten into town and had a lot of great foodie plans for our Asheville weekend, but for the first night, just wanted to keep it simple and go for some casual Italian. Del Vecchios came up on Yelp, and we liked the look of everything and the sound of all the reviews. Seemed like our kind of place, so we ventured out. Very convenient off the loop, and kind of an interesting little building with a small parking lot. There are a few outdoor tables, but we decided to eat inside where there was a bit less road noise. Saw lots of people coming in and out for takeout. All orders are placed at the counter, and if you're eating in, they bring it out to you. Perfect. We both went for calzones, and really, neither of us had a single complaint. Both were baked perfectly, came with a generous amount of a DELICIOUS marinara sauce and a bit of shaved parm. I like that no plastic ramekins or cutlery are used for eat in orders, keeps their costs down and it's more environmentally sustainable. Taste was wonderful on both, mine was a meatball and pep combo, nice and hearty. Good ricotta, not too much or too little. We would definitely come back here again. read more

My family got a basic bow tie pasta, a pizza and a bolognese pasta. All of it was terrible. Pizza was a 4 out of 10, bolognese was a 5 out of 10, and the basic pasta (the easiest) for my vegetarian daughter was absolutely horrible, a 2 out of 10. It even included a nice piece of meat, which was a nice touch and a reminder of how we will never eat here again. I'm shocked the aggregate rating is around 4.0, so either drunks eat here or we managed to come on the night they had their backup to the backup team in the kitchen. It's a dive. I placed an order for our usual, the Gorgonzola chicken pasta and decided to try a cold cutlet sub. When I got to the shop, I had to wait an extra ten minutes while they finished up but the staff was very polite and communicative about it. It was worth the extra wait! The pasta was perfectly cooked and the chicken was moist and well-seasoned even though it was closer to closing time, even the sauce was on point. This place is just okay. I went for a panini sandwich at lunch. Service is counter service, which was friendly and efficient. I ordered the Greek chicken panini. The panini bread itself was the highlight: it was pressed nicely and was perfectly crispy. There was a good portion of chicken deli meat on the sandwich, but there was really nothing about the sandwich that stood out and it didn't have any real Greek-style taste at all. I didn't really taste any Greek seasoning or any feta cheese. There was an olive tapenade that was overly salty. The sun dried tomato sauce was also not that good. So the sandwich overall was just okay. They serve homemade potato chips on the side. I love salty chips, but I'd have to say these chips were probably the saltiest I've ever had, past the point of being good salty and crossing into salt bomb. I may go back sometime and try their core Italian food, but at this point, they are pretty low on my list of Asheville go-to restaurants. read more

Del Vecchios was a recommended place in Asheville so we tried it out for a late lunch after running a few errands in town. You order at the counter and we were greeted with a smile as we came in. We ordered a meat calzone and their lasagna. We enjoyed the fresh hot food that was served with a smile from the waitress. Portions were ample and we will enjoy the leftovers later. My fiancé ordered pepperoni calzone. Pepperoni and cheese tasted good. The size was good for the price. Marinara sauce and actual calzone dough could use more flavor but overall would get again. Service and ambiance worked out well. I got the fresh tomato and basil pasta dish on GF penne, with the additions of garlic, onions, sausage, and vegan cheese. The flavors worked out, but the pasta was pretty broken and the veg was inconsistently cooked due to being unevenly cut. So it appears some dishes are better than others. read more

I'm really hesitant about counter service because you don't know how it's going to go but I must say theirs is the best Ive ever had! They had a little bench that we sat at and looked over the menu. The man running the register was super nice and helpful! They bring you your food and they even came around and checked on us! We had a large garden salad for a starter. Oh my goodness that combo of fresh vegetables is amazing! I have the Baked Ziti Parm and my boyfriend got the steak and cheese with fries! Soooo good and so much food I probably have dinner for 2 days! And I'm not mad about that! Prices are great too! The restaurant has an Italian restaurant vibe with tables and booths. The inside had kind a sports-bar vibe. The employees were polite, and the service was decent. I ordered a calzone, which was good overall. I might have said "great," but there was a lot of moisture underneath it. I know that it's normal for calzone (and Stromboli) to have *some* water underneath it, but this was more than usual. It didn't ruin the flavor, but made it difficult to pick up when I tried moving the calzone over to a to-go box. Impromptu lunch spot next to wine store was a HUGE HIT!! The cheese sticks were crispy outside and string cheesy on the inside served with a perfect marinara! The crust on this pizza was GREAT -CRISPY and not super thin or super thick. It held the perfect amount of sauce and toppings. The cheese was the perfect blend and flavorful. Was in town with some friends for the weekend and we were in the mood for italian. We ordered on Uber Eats- chicken marsala, chicken pesto calzone, spinach ravioli, and fettuccine bolognese pasta. My reason for my review is mainly the portion of the spinach ravioli. Despite being the same price as the two other pasta dishes, my friends had leftovers of theirs and I was still starving after having ate my 5 pieces of ravioli ($3 per rav?). Ripoff- either include more pieces or adjust the price and put it on the kids menu. I tried the bolognese too and it was decent.. Nothing special. Also, garlic knots were borderline stale and prob most rock hard knots I have ever tasted. As an update to the owner's sarcastic response: I realized I never mentioned how my ravioli tasted. I was not "inclined to be unhappy from the start" - I very much enjoyed each of the 5 pieces. I was just shocked that that was all I received. I ordered a garlic cheesebread and a calzone with sausage and peppers, then asked how long it would take. Turns out the "small wait" was half an hour; I probably should've asked before I ordered. In any case, I waited outside and around 8PM, I was given my food. The calzone was super cheesy, but there wasn't much flavor aside from the sausage. There was too much cheese. I'd read some bad reviews of this place ("terrible service," "broke my teeth on the rock hard garlic knots," etc.) but something told me I should try it for myself. I don't know if Del Vecchios had some bad days in the past, or some reviewers had some bad days in the past, but this I know: we had a really great experience tonight. We were greeted warmly on arrival, placed our order at the counter and grabbed a table. The mixed greens salad was outstanding - loaded with candied pecans, dried cranberries, feta, and grape tomatoes, and deliciously complemented by their house-made ranch dressing. Oh, and BTW the garlic knot that came with it was flavorful and soft on the inside, and a little crispy on the outside. Trust me, nobody at the table lost any teeth. The Margherita pizza had a chewy, moderately thick crust and featured a beautifully flavored herb-garlic base (no tomato sauce) covered with tomatoes, basil, and super-fresh mozzarella.
