However, I know from traveling that some of the best spots are ones that appear to be a hole in the wall. I walked in, very cute inside! Staff was welcoming and I cozied right up at the bar to wait for my friend. I was immediately brought chips and salsa and a cold beer. We ended up sitting at a high top and our waitress suggested that I try either carne asada from the Mexican menu or Vaca Frita from the Cuban menu. I love me some carne asada but I was intrigued but this 'fried shredded beef' that was marinated in mole and cooked in a hot skillet until crispy. She suggested sweet plantains to go with it and white rice with beans which is traditional Cuban (instead of yellow rice). IT WAS FABULOUS! It was crispy on the outside and juicy. The mole was flavorful but not spicy and i appreciated that the meat was not dripping in sauce. My dinner date ordered chicken tamales which were seasoned in a Cuban style with yellow rice. She is used to Mexican tamales but said these really hit the spot! The only blemish on the nice was her second margarita which was the cucumber one which she didn't like at all. However, the first one she ordered (pictured) which was a different flavor was a show stopper.

Service (N/A): Everything is ordered on your phone by scanning the QR code on the table. They bring out all the food on a platter. Sauces: I loved all of their sauces! They aren't too spicy but have a depth of flavor. I especially liked the white sauce mixed with the spicy. Coffee was meh. Maybe we ordered the wrong dishes but the meal was a bit of a letdown. Our neighbor's brisket looked better than our meal. Pulled Mojo Pork (4/5): The pork felt dry despite being covered in mojo seasoning. I would have preferred plain pulled pork but it still accompanied the sauces well. Single Hamburger (is actually two (2) 3 oz patties) (5/5): I enjoyed this burger due to the sauce and loved the potato roll. We ordered it with bacon which were thick cut slices and that was delish. Mac and Cheese (2/5): Rich but not much flavor. White cheddar cheese rather than yellow cheese. Hush Puppies (4/5): You can skip the corn bread if you're going for the hush puppies which were heavy due to the fried exterior. Without the homemade butter, the hushpuppies did not have much flavor to it. Curly Fries (2/5): No frills with some seasoning, but not much. Did not have any crunch, felt like I was eating soggy fries. Plantains (5/5): Hard to mess up sliced plantains but due to how heavy they are, we only had one a piece. Having had BBQ in many places, this place isn't it.

However, the moment you walk in the door you know that the correct decision was made and you MUST get a table. The aroma of steak and pork grabs your olfactory senses and whets your appetite. Then you notice how every single table is occupied by very happy diners and it's not even a decision to not wait your turn. We only had to cool our heels maybe 10 minutes before we were seated and we both got the Mofongo, which is a plantain-pork amalgamation of flavor and fun. Paired with your favorite meat, it's a winner. The staff is fun, knowledgeable, and they serve up the fare FAST. We ate every bite. La Casa Mofongo is THE place for Dominican food. Worthy of a return to try something new.

Curious and hungry, we decided to check it out. The restaurant is located in a small shopping plaza, and I have to admit, the dark tinted windows made the place seem a little questionable at first glance. I actually got out of the car to peek inside before committing. Once I saw several people dining and enjoying themselves, we decided to give it a shot. Inside, the restaurant was tastefully decorated with a charming Dominican countryside flair. Even the bathrooms had a playful sense of humor that added character to the place. Service started off promptly, and we were seated right away with menus in hand. However, while browsing the menu, I quickly realized that despite the restaurant's name, there were very limited Puerto Rican options aside from the different varieties of mofongo. The menu was overwhelmingly Dominican cuisine, which was a bit disappointing since we specifically came looking for Puerto Rican dishes. We ordered the empanada de cangrejo to start, which was flavorful and freshly made. We also shared the mofongo with masitas fritas, and I will say the food itself was well seasoned, hearty, and satisfying. Unfortunately, the service did not match the quality of the food. Our waitress lacked warmth and wasn't particularly attentive. What stood out the most was that she didn't know what sorullos or alcapurrias were, which caught me completely off guard considering we were searching for Puerto Rican cuisine. Overall, the food was enjoyable, but the experience didn't fully meet our expectations. If you're looking for Dominican-style mofongo dishes, you may enjoy it. But if you're specifically craving traditional Puerto Rican cuisine, this may not quite hit the mark.

The restaurant is located in a small strip shopping center just north of the Greenwood Shopping Center on Congress Ave. in Palm Springs. We arrived at a good time as the inside is rather small. My husband ordered Mofongo stuffed with chicken and peppers and was very pleased with his choice. The portion size was quite generous. I ordered the Chicken de Plancha. My chicken was grilled to perfection and accompanied by plantains and black beans and rice. I enjoyed every bite. Our server checked on us several times during our meal. She was also very patient when we ordered as we weren't familiar with some of the menu items. The prices and portion sizes of our meals were a good value. I talk about the "curb-to-table" experience frequently. In my former role as a Delta Air Line Captain, I recognized the curb-to-plane challenges our customers encountered. Chef Conley has created a friendly and welcoming experience from curb-to-table. It starts with the complimentary valet. Finally. Finally. I learned about our regular valet: MANNY! Manny, thank you for the kindness and safe service you have given us. You are usually the first person who takes care of the Buccan Family. You create the smile before we walk in the doors of Buccan or Imoto. Thank you. Solang' (my spelling is probably wrong and I apologize): You are such a beautiful soul. Thank you for your kind words to Laura as we left. Kindness makes a difference. While kindness is free, sincerity is priceless. Wow, I haven't even chatted about the food. We tried something new this time. After our small plates, we tried the pork chop. The mild onion and sweet rhubarb---simply stunning. Even shared, we boxed some for home. I don't care if you are watching what you eat. Close your eyes! The chocolate cookies (warmed) are a must. Period. Selfishly, I hope Chef Clay never gets a tv show. A book deal is allowed. We want this local treasure and his team to remain anchored here. Clay and his team are own foodie treasure in our back yard. But wait, there's more: Honored to watch Chef Clay modestly expand the Miami environs. He will be opening his Buccan-Imoto-Buccan Sandwich Shop experience in Coral Gables sometime in June/July. OMG, we cannot wait for this to open. Though retired from the airlines (I miss my MIA overnights), we will make the trip to celebrate these new venues. However, we will do it very quietly. We do not wish to be labeled as stalkers. Probably one of my longest reviews. I love seeing hard working people succeed. What this team does for the community is simply breathtaking. This is a true success story. Thank you Buccan-Imoto-Grato-Sandwich Shop-Stokes Barn Team!!!!
