OVERALL = 3 STARS (A - OK) Atmosphere = 3 Stars (A - OK). Service = 5 Stars (As good as it gets). Food = 2.3 Stars (I've had better). Despite outstanding service, the food was a huge disappointment. Expecting restaurant dining, we got bar food. We won't be back. IN A FEW WORDS... Anticipation... Four and a half Yelp Stars. WOW! Hopes for a great meal. We order a lot but only one dish stands out: Avgolemano. Is it the odd time? Sunday lunch at 2:30. The kitchen is flat. Service is great! But stale bread and dry gyro meat should never be served. We see great reviews. Opa? Nay... more like nOpa! We say eat elsewhere. IN OTHER WORDS... We arrive for a weekend lunch at 2:30 pm. Aside from a soup and the sausage, everything tastes warmed over, like leftovers sitting under a heat lamp. Our expectations of a great meal are dashed. Atmosphere = 3 Stars (A - OK). Walking to the entrance, you traverse a large outdoor seating area shared with neighboring restaurants. We consider eating outside, but music is much too loud. The dining room is big, with about 7 seats at the L shaped bar on the left and 14 or 15 tables in the rest of the room. Greek themed art hang on the walls. Service = 5 Stars (As good as it gets). On this mid Sunday afternoon, there is no wait. The service; from greeting to seating to ordering to receiving our food; is quick. The staff are knowledgeable and answer all our questions. Water is topped off before the glasses are emptied. You can't ask for much more. Food = 2.3 Stars (I've had better). 1. Complimentary bread service 0 Stars (Methinks Not!). We read the Yelp reviews describing the bread as toasted. We also saw the pictures showing beautiful grill marks on the bread. Our party of two receives two dry, stale pieces which are hard to chew. They taste like they sat in a warm oven for a few hours. There are no grill marks or any browning to indicate toasting. We agree the Skordalia is unique although it tastes like it's made using powdered or granulated garlic. We don't normally rate a free item but the bread is such a letdown and dis-satisfier, it deserves comment. 2. Spanakotiropita 2 Stars (I've had better). This appetizer consists of two hefty squares. It's brought to the table along with a serrated knife but one of us still found it difficult to cut through the base layers of phyllo. Not sure why the bottom is so dense. The filling is good, with a lot of feta and dill. We would not order this again. 3. Avgolemono soup 4 Stars (I'm a fan). This is the star of our lunch. Rich, creamy and tart, we could have eaten four bowls of it. We would order this again. 4. Fasolatha soup 3 Stars (A-OK). The best way to describe this soup is to call it a sweet minestrone w/ white beans and garbanzos and without pasta. OK, but nothing to write home about. Not sure if we'd get this again. 5. Imported Greek Sausage 3 Stars (A-OK). Two sausages, split and grilled, served on a few leaves of romaine and pieces of roasted red bell peppers. They are accompanied by some wedges of soft pita and a small scoop of thick tzatziki. We might order this again. 6. Niko's Gyro Caesar Salad 2 Stars (I've had better). A large salad of chopped romaine, tossed with too much Caesar dressing and a lot of feta sprinkled on top. It's topped with a generous portion of shaved pieces of dry, warm gyro and accompanied by pita chips. There were two wedges of pink, tasteless tomatoes which they could have easily left off. At a minimum, you'd think a Greek restaurant would take pride in serving their gyro fresh rather than the dry slices we got. You'd think wrong. Good gyro would have elevated this to 3 stars. As served, we would not order this again. TIP: if you must order this salad, ask your server to serve the dressing and feta on the side. Then you can add them to your taste! Lunch for two, out the door, with tax and tip, $90 (July 2023). read more

I've been coming here for several years and the food is generally tasty, but the overall experience has been diminished by poor service during my past few visits. Most recently, the wine and other beverages took 30 minutes to be delivered and that was after I followed up 3 times. Appetizers came quickly, but the main dishes were slow to arrive. One entree for a party of 6 was forgotten, requests for salad dressing had to be made multiple times. Add to that a lamb burger that was supposed to be medium-rare, but was instead well-done. It took so long that I didn't bother to send it back. All of that makes for a very uneven experience. read more

The moussaka is so flavorful and is such a big portion! The eggplant is cooked wonderfully, delicious seasonings. BEST GYRO I have ever had. And I'm not a gyro food person or connoisseur but it was really good. This place is located in the heart of downtown Livermore. We came here in the middle of the week and it was one of the few establishments to be open at this time, lunch time, which was a nice convenience. It was HUGE, the gyro. I took half home, got 2 servings out of it. You also get either a side of pasta salad or a side of fries, your choice. Tip: My friend always adds feta to her fries and it is an excellent combination with the tzaiki sauce you should try for yourself. But what I liked best was the complimentary bread and the garlicy "crack" spread that came with it, whatever it's really called. Great establishment in downtown Livermore. Came in for dinner. Wanted to sit at the bar, but there was already several people there so I sat at a table. It was handed a menu at my table and noticed so many great choices of both Greek and American wines and beers. I also noticed that there's lots of choices for appetizers, sandwiches, salads, and entrées. And I chose a chicken, sausage and pasta entrée before my entrée came out. I was served a basket of grilled bread, and this mixture in a small little ramekin. It was super soft and very flavorful. I will just mention that if you're not a big fan of garlic, then don't use the spread. I was curious as to what was in the spread and it was three simple ingredients... Potato, garlic, and olive oil. It was such a nice change from just butter or olive oil and balsamic vinegar. It did not take long before my entrée came out. It was steaming. It was obvious that it did not sit long waiting to be served. Lots of chicken and lots of sausage and a very tasty sauce with my pasta my waiter came back a few minutes later to make sure that I was happy with my dish. He did this not once, but twice to make sure that I was happy. I was well taken care of him. my dinner was extremely filling. I had considered dessert when I first got there and looked over the dessert menu... Lots of great choices some very interesting ones to but I was full and I will just have a lighter dinner next time so that I can sample a dessert. We got quoted about 15 minutes wait, then saw two open seats at the bar top we could sit at while we waited. We got to chat with a few people at the bar and ordered a bottle of Darcie Kent Merlot (good stuff) We then got sat pretty quickly. Paid out our bill then went to our table to eat. It was perfect weather outdoors. I got the special chicken & prawns with green beans & rice. My wife got the gyro combo plate, meat was so tender, flavorful, & lots of it. We also got a real homemade spinokapita, not the frozen ones from Trader Joe's, which I love also. It was really good, spinach tasted fresh as did the flaky breading it came in. There was also some outside seating although it was full. I'd say the food was solid. Large portions, good seasoning. My husband got the lamb which was my favorite. It was succelent, fresh and very tasty, perfect amount of seasoning. I also got the fried zucchini but was not a big fan of the dipping sauce that came with it. I enjoyed everything that came with the Feta Spread and would definitely recommend it. The veggies that came with the entrees where good but a little bland to me. Same with the rice. The best Greek food that I've had since visiting Greece. Love that they have Greek wines. They have saganaki cheese. Most people probably overlook this appetizer, but as far as I know it's pretty traditional. A big block of feta is breaded and deep fried and then eaten by spreading it on pita bread. Delicious. A good friend brought me here and it was great. The food was excellent. The service was also quite friendly. We had the Mousaka with soem greek Red Wine that was also very good. Desert definitely topped off the meal. We had the baklava and it was extraordinary. The honey glaze was ridiculous. Not a waste of time and the mom and pop feel added to the warmth.
