How can a Denny's not be rated less than a 3? It's always open. They have booth seating. The menu is a treat to look at. The only problem with this location is that the parking is mostly at the back. I like this Denny's! It's on alma and Monterey and I often meet friends there for breakfast. The best thing about this Denny's is the management and waiters and waitresses. Everyone is so nice and most of the employees are bilingual! The senior breakfasts are good and reasonably priced! Try it and see for urself! As of today they are serving great hobbit breakfasts! The last few times I went there I was told there was a wait for the breakfast bar. I'm not a resturauntuer or manager, but I've watch Chef Ramseys from Hell's Kitchen and Kitchen nightmares religiously. I think I have a basic idea how the kitchen line works. (I also worked as a waiter for a few resturaunts over the years) 30 minute wait for the breakfast bar is retarded. Here are my faults. 1. Your chef's aren't getting the food out fast enough, or your waiters aren't pulling the food off the line fast enough. Either way, this is the Managers fault. You need to step up and get your employees in check. 2. Also, NEVER under any circumstances use the breakfast bar as general seating. Table partys aren't clearing fast enough? You have one group of idiots hogging up a table, leaving no tip and drinking cup after cup of coffee? Tell them to beat it. I went for breakfast and simply waiting for about 10 minutes at the counter before anyone came up (neither to seat me, nor to say that how long a wait there would be). Finally after 15mins, I interrupted a conversation and asked if they were going to seat me. *THEN* the person told me they have a waitlist and I should sign up. I do not understand why they could not tell me this 15 minutes ago, when they clearly saw me patiently waiting before them. I have eaten there before, the food is as expected from Denny's, service is slow and sloppy. ok, so i realize this is denny's... not exactly the destination for fine dining... but when i come into any dining establishment, i expect a minimum level of service... and it just hasn't been here :( [with the exception of that SWEET older lady on the night shift-- millie?!] the last time i came, it was around 10pm-- t'was a late night hankering for some onion rings... what can i say?! so we were seated & assigned an obviously "in training" server. that's fine... i'm pretty patient. he was pretty attentive... but since we were his only table, i would hope he would be. mid way through our meal, he approaches our table and says "i'm going on my break now... if you need anything, i'll be back in 10 minutes." uhhh, wtf?! i didn't even know what to say... i've never heard that in any restaurant. so we wait... and wait. when we finally get our check, we go pay up front... and i notice the STRONG smell of cigarettes seeping into the restaurant. gross... if that's ur thing, whatev... but i don't wana smell it at a restaurant. so on our way out, we see the culprits-- the night manager (the tall sleezy middle eastern man always w/ his shirt open a few too many buttons), another server, and *GASP* our in-training server!! didn't you just go on a break, buddy?! nevermind that... here in CA we have laws about smoking right by doors and windows... and that bench 3 feet from the entrance is definitely inside the limit. i would expect more from employees... but then again, this IS denny's. yeaaa... i'll probably be back. but it'll definitely take an alcohol induced night out to get me here. read more

What's to say about Denny's? This is like reviewing how good water tastes... Oh well, here goes. First the good. The waitress who served us was great as she was cheerful and helpful. She offered to provide separate checks, took our $ and brought change individually. Last, the place is clean. Now, the not-so-good. I had the value meal that came with 2 pancakes, 1 measly strip of bacon and 1 little sausage. I thought he menu said 2 of each? The waitress also messed up our diet and regular cokes but fortunately, she rectified the problem quickly. Probability of me going back is 10%. There is something magical about this Denny's. I've never had a bad experience here. The staff is surprisingly friendly (especially Millie). They were friendly before they remodelled and now post-remodel it seems as if they've taken their service up a notch. This place is packed on Sunday mornings, but usually you won't have to wait more than 20 minutes. The evenings and late night hours are much better - just walk in and sit. The food is average, exactly what you would expect from any other Denny's but the service here is why I keep coming back. If you ask for ranch dressing with your fries, they will bring you a bowl of it. If you don't like the small glasses for water, they will bring you a huge soda glass. I refuse to go to any other Denny's in San Jose because this one in my opinion is the best - 5 star service, 3 star food. read more

Not sure if I'm being scammed or what but I ordered the Bourbon Burger (mushrooms, bell peppers, etc.) and it was supposed to come with the "Cheddar Bun" as advertised by the menu. It was served in a regular bun, and I was a bit confused if this really was our order or not. I then asked the waitress if she could check and she said she would ask the chef. She came back and apologized about it and said that they would make the bread now. I was expecting maybe something a little complimentary for the mistake, or for them to take back the burger and redo it since we had barely taken a bite out of it. They brought out the cheddar bun itself just like that on a plate and I was very disappointed. WORST DENNYS EVER! We came here for my graduation and we walked in normally and asked for a reservation for 20 people and they sat us down and everything then after sitting down and already eating with my cousins waiting for the rest of the family another family comes and they said they had a reservation for 20 already and then I guess the whole restaurant messed up and thought we were them and then the manager comes and kicks us out while we are already eating because the people that came in already had the reservation and they thought it was us so instead of trying to work everything out the first thing they did was kick us out of our seats while eating, and to top it off they took 3 hours to bring us all our food and took them 2 hours just to bring us a cup of water. We came here because IHOP was already closed. Service was OK, although pretty slow on bringing us the bill. Food was alright. My friend asked about getting the mini burgers with a Gardenburger patty, and the waiter said it would cost more. My other friend asked for the nachos, without the meat When he got it, it was just chips, cheese, and sour cream. The picture/menu advertised that it also came with pico de gallo and some other toppings. The waiter reported the company decided that was too expensive and so stopped using them. However, nobody told my friend this prior to ordering, nor did they give him a discount, so he paid $7 for some chips, cheese, and sour cream. Given the extra toppings were explicitly stated on the menu, he was a victim of false advertising. read more

My last visit to Denny's was ten years ago, but I have been CRAVING melted cheese lately and I had a hazy memory of some great Denny's cheese sticks with Ranch dressing. So I just walked over here and got some takeout- YEAH! Breakfast of champions! You have to like a place that serves cheese sticks at 10am- One star With Ranch- One Star That is right next to my office- One Star With a nice guy - One Star Minus one star for them costing me $6- I know I'm in SJ, and I know I'm old and haven't been to one in ten years...but come ON, it's cheese and salt and more salt and more cheese- oh, and some salty breadcrumbs. 8 of 'em, which means they cost me ~.75/each. 08/01/2013 I came here for dinner while staying at the nearby Motel 6. The walk from Motel 6 to the Denny's is not far. The other reviews for both places make references to the element in the parking areas between the two locations. It is a rough neighborhood, so you will see that stuff. Expect to have pan-handlers approach you, and don't leave any valuables visible in your vehicle at either place. I know it's Denny's and it's next to a Motel 6 and a Vagabond Inn. Those are not places where you expect much from, if you have frequented these places. This Denny's is no exception. It is poorly lit, inside and out. The service is not very welcoming. Arnulfo (the waiter) saw me enter, but delayed seating me to continue his conversation with several people who did not appear to be customers. (no food or drink, appeared to be very lounged and relaxed, possibly employees or friends.) I had the spicy cowboy steak from the value menu. Maybe I just received Value Service to match. After I finished my coke, i placed my cup at the end of the table for Arnulo to see. This did not produce any results immediately. I had to lift my cup and wave it, while he conversed with another guy he apparently knew. He spoke loudly across the mostly empty lobby to inquiry whether or not this guy need ANOTHER taco. This guy got "another taco" before I got a refill. When it came time to pay, i waited by the counter. Arnulfo had disappeared along with all other employees, a lady from the back kitchen area finally came out and allowed me to pay. I almost always leave a tip, even with poor service. This service was poor, even by Denny's standards. The food was less than normal Denny's Quality. It tasted overcooked and looked rushed in appearance. I normally order that value meal at Denny's to keep expenses down while on the road. I don't think I will return to that Denny's any time in the near futuree. read more

I've never had any problems with the food or service here. They do Denny's standard corporate-mandated fare perfectly averagely, and I've found the service to be pretty good, even when the place gets busy (which it usually does around lunch time). I think the only thing I've ever ordered there and been dissatisfied with is cheesecake, which looked and tasted like it'd been sitting in the fridge for too long. read more

I averaged out the rating to a 3 because it can range anywhere from a 4 all the way down to a 2. The service is pretty standard and can even surprisingly good on occasion. The interior was recently remodeled, providing a much more pleasant experience than an old rundown Denny's like on Tully (unless they remodeled recently). The range from 2 to 4 stars really depends on a variable that is of no fault of Denny's, other than the type of establishment they run: favored by drunk idiots. Your experience will vary depending on the ratio of sober/tolerable guests::drunk/loud blathering idiots. Keep in mind that this is the closest Denny's to downtown San Jose's "nightlife scene"; and consequently, if you go around 2am from Thursday through Sunday, you're likely to have a bad time...unless of course you're too drunk to care. read more

Ok this sounds really weird but I kind of have to agree with Ting R. Denny's coffee (I drink it black.. like my heart.. har har joke) tastes pretty good.. But onto the food: The workers at all dennys especially the night shifts have hearts made out of gold. They are so nice and attentive. They are also very understandable when it comes to drunk college kids. Besides the Dennys on north 1st street, this is the only dennys in downtown SJ (that I know of). It is a bigger dennys so they can accommodate large crowds. Parking can be a tad tricky especially if you are going after a football game (located by the Spartan Stadium) ALSO its across the street from the infamous Wendys thumb controversy.. haha read more

My boyfriend and I have been to over 25 different Denny's in our lifetime TOTAL. When it was my birthday I wanted my breakfast so I told him let's go to this particular Denny's because I have been going here for over 4 years. After Traveling across the southern states, you tend to notice things about a restaurant that you wouldn't have noticed before. This particular joint was unbelievable. They not only have great service but they also have good food. First time I came here I was about 18 years old. The staff wasn't great English speakers but they treated me well. I decided to work for a Haunted House company and we always went to Denny's afterwords. Of course we had been to the one on Matilda and Didn't like it because they hated people coming in with make up still on their face. SO the next year I took my crew to Denny's on 1st and Alma. They set us up in a different room and had all the tables set up for a group of 25. That was amazing. We had 1 waiter and it turned out he worked around the corner on Willow and Almaden at a little store I visited all the time. He got everyone's order right, the food was great and the service was fast! We still had 2 weeks left so we went for a second time and a third. We loved it so much! I brought my boyfriend there when I turned 28 on Wednesday. (THIS YEAR) He has been to so many Denny's that he was hesitant to come with me. He just wanted me to get my free breakfast and get out. Well we went in and he was shocked they had a great booth open and a huge TV was above us with all the weather and news. Really cool. After our coffee came out, our waitress Wished me Happy B-day and told me what I could order. Boyfriend was looking at the salt and pepper shakers and they were clean, not all clogged up. The sugar was filled, the ketchup was not empty and crusty and neither was the hot sauce. It was all clean. I mean literally my bf was doing the white glove test, even on the light fixture. When the food came out it was great. They did our orders just right and had the pancakes on a separate plate. They refilled our coffee 3 times during our stay and it was just right. After Wednesday, we decided to take some friend's from Hollister to the Zoo on Sunday (today). (SEE MY REVIEW OF HAPPY HOLLOW ZOO) There were 5 Adults and 1 child. I ordered my Hush Puppies and the Slamwhich. It was unbelievable. I couldn't even finish it. Our friends loved the service and even though they said it would take 15 minutes to be seated, we were in within 5 min. Food was out after ordering within 8-10 minutes. And for a Lumberjack, French Toast breakfast, 2 build your own Grand Slam, a kid's chocolate chip pancakes, and my Grand Slamwhich. That was pretty fast! It's Denny's!!! It has been a long time since I have been to a Denny's. We had a Grand Slam and Farmhouse Sausage Skillet and 2 cups of the dark diner coffee. The dark diner coffee was an improvement! The pancakes looked very fluffy but taste was meh. Bacon and eggs are well, bacon and eggs. Nothing special. The skillet was a bit too salty for my liking. I was unable to finish it all. It was pretty tasty. I appreciated the spinach and tomato in it. Service was great. My son knocked over his glass of water and the server was quick on cleaning it up, without us asking! read more

When there's a BOGO, you know I'm there FOSHO! Came here this morning around 2am-ish with my friends after going clubbing in downtown SJ for 2 of my friends' birthdays. Of course after such a night, we all had the munchies, so I said.."Hey I got some of those BOGO coupons. Let's roll to Denny's!!" As expected, there was a consensus amongst the group. As we arrived, the worker told us to wait a few minutes as she had to set up our table for the 8 of us. No biggie. I noticed it was pretty crowded for being 2am, but then again, not as busy and chaotic as La Vics probably would have been for all those other people who had gone out in downtown. In any case, I gladly took advantage of my "buy one get one free build your own Grand Slam" meal coupon. So I got one order of the Grand Slam, getting 2 wheat pancakes, turkey bacon, hash browns, and scrambled eggs. What a delight it was to know that they offered wheat pancakes and turkey bacon as healthier options. Also, I don't recall back then that we were able to actually choose the 4 items we wanted in our Grand Slam? The other options were toast, sausage links, creamy grits, oatmeal, english muffin, or buttermilk biscuit. About 10 minutes later, all of our orders came. Can you say good customer service?! Not to mention that our waitress frequently came back to our table to refill our waters and to make sure everything was okay. The food tasted just about right. The same 'ol Denny's food I've had for years, so nothing new there. I liked that Denny's was a chill environment, so we could be as loud and rowdy as we wanted to and other customers would still mind their own business. It was quite an interesting night, so you can't blame us for recounting the events of the evening. =D The checkout procedure was pretty quick. I had two of those BOGO coupons and even though I read the fine print that stated that it was only allowed for "one coupon per check per visit," the cashier still honored both of them for us. I'm sure he didn't even care to read the details of the coupon anyway, but whatever. We didn't complain! Denny's has now moved up on my list of places to go in the evening/morning hours. I placed an order for delivery at 1:25 AM, since Dennys has 24/7 delivery. My boyfriend called just 4 minutes after it was placed to confirm that it would be delivered in the 30-40 minute window as said on the website. I called this location myself at 2:10 AM and the employee THEN said because of the hour it may not get picked up by their 3rd party delivery service. He advised I cancel the order. So I attempted to do so and was not able to online, so I call back at 2:11 AM. This time the male employee tells me he cannot cancel it and to call back after 8:00 AM to speak to a manager. I called at 10:40 AM to speak with a manager. I said " I would like to not cancel the order if possible, I can pick it up today at noon if you can make a fresh order." I was being courteous. Even offered to pick up a fresh order of what I had ordered for DELIVERY 8 hours ago. I didnt ask to be compensated. I just wanted fresh food not food that would give me food poisoning. The female that answered the phone said she gave the ticket to her boss and that I need to place another order and get charged another 40 dollars. I then said "I asked to speak to your boss" and she said "well I am a manager too." LOL. What kind of manager doesnt care about the health of their customers????? And during a time like this? SHE TOLD ME I CAN STILL PICK UP THE ORDER FROM 1:25 AM (mind you this is 10:40 in the morning now) EVEN THOUGH IT IS COLD. IT HAD BEEN SITTING IN TO GO BOXES ON THE COUNTER FOR 8 HOURS AND YOU ARE GOING TO OFFER IT TO A CUSTOMER? YOU ARE DISGUSTING AND THE HEALTH OFFICER NEEDS TO SHUT THIS LOCATION DOWN. some of the most hardworking people i've ever seen. insanely busy - saturday april 17 at 2-3am and i have never seen such helpful, friendly, and attentive staff at such a crazy hour. the food was DELICIOUS!! i've never been to a denny's before this, and didn't expect much - but the cinnamon roll pancakes are gonna make me come back again and again. the new girl here was so sweet, friendly, and surprisingly well educated on the menu! she let me know it was her first week while she was friendlily chit chatting with me, and i'm so impressed. the older gentleman working tonight here also provided a calming and comforting vibe to our table even though the people around us were loud. what great food here tonight and even better staff :) read more

Well after a night out boozin, at 3:30am in San Jose the options are limited. My friends and I love Denny's. I don't think I have ever even been there during the day, but at night after the bars it is awesome. There is the post-bar crowd combined with the 3am weirdo crowd, and you can have the most entertaining time there. Maybe the service sucks, and the food is mediocre, but who cares?? The waitress don't speak English and our order took forever and when we got it , it was cold eggs runny. And I had to get up and get my own syrup for my French toast. It started with great service. But as the young man started to take our order, my daughter and I noticed that he was not writing anything we said. I specifically made my own omelette. When my plate arrived only 1 condiment was in my omelette. I waited patiently for him to return but never did until I asked the bus boy to get our server and still nothing. I figured he was eating his brkfst too. By this time my daughter finished eating I never touched the omelette just the hush brown. He came, he did apologized, said he was not going to charge me. As we were paying I noticed that he did charge me not the full amount but still....that young boy should take responsibility for his errors and not blame the cooks. Wanted a quick power meal after my work out because I saw that they had pumpkin pancakes so thought id give it a try. Huge mistake! I got there at 820, didnt get food until 9! I guess they forgot me (two waiters for the whole restaurant), so i sat there waiting until i saw that a family that came in after me already got their order and food. The lady next to me waited 20 mins for her dish.. Thats just ridiculous . Went to the manager and said ive been waiting for 20 mins and he barely bat an eye. No apologies, just oh ok, then got the waiter. Talk about horrible service. The pumpkin pancakes were OK, and eggs, meh. Wanted sunny side up over medium and it was super soft. When i make eggs its crispy on the bottom and the yolk is still runny. Anyway, before, i had ordered a biscuits and gravy and the biscuit seem like it was days old. Hard and stale.
