Newby riders... this place is not for you! Went in with a friend and when we walked in, the old man was rude (I think this was the owner) but another gentleman helped out and was nicer though not the most helpful. With COVID -19, you could not test drive --somewhat understandable but I could still sit and touch the bike. Some bikes had no price and not sure how they got the price. A total of $1400 later, we found 2 bikes we liked with very little help and direction from the bike shop--though they followed us around like hawks. When paying, they supposably did an out of store inspection. A few thing. Tires still low on both bikes, seat not tightened and no owners manual. Yes this is all Small stuff but as a new recreational rider, and dropping a small fortune on a bike, I'd expect a bit more attention from a shop that's been in operation for so many years. Took a wheel in to get new spokes in that broke and get it trued, I was quoted 2 days and to my surprise I was called a couple hours later to tell me it was done! I know summer is a busy time and I got lucky but I was sure happy. The only bummer was they didn't have any white spokes to replace mine with. The guy on the sales floor gave my kid a sucker asked if we needed any help and we said we were just looking and wishing and he let us take our time and didn't pressure us. read more

I recently went on to buy a bike and they had a bike I was interested in, however was steered to a different better brand with the same Shimano parts for less for a lesser price. I was told it was last year's model worth much more but since it was last year's he was giving a deal on it. I later found out that was a lie, it was a 2 year ago or older model. Pretentious, crowded, and rude It started off with me going in there to buy a tube for my tire and asking the difference between thorn resistant and tubes with liners and I got the most sarcastic response. I decided to look around and could hardly look at anything due to there being some part or bike in the way of everything. When I finally got to the items I wanted to look at the prices weren't marked which doesn't really bother me because I'm not afraid to ask. However, the guy working the desk/register area grew more and more irritated with every question. I only asked about three different items till I was stared down and I left. This place is a joke of an existence and I'm glad other people have had better times there, but it is obvious that if you're under 35 and don't have a family they don't want you there. read more

I have a new bike that I bought my wife from Sears, so I know the level of bike does not compare to what Derby Bicycle's offer. The gears were not switching smoothly so I needed a gear adjustment. I was amazed that Derby's service center looked at the bike and said they would adjust it for $50.00 . From what I had researched this was very high in price. I took the bike to Bicycle Village at 92nd and Wadsworth. They looked at it and in less than 5 minutes had it adjusted. I was quoted $10.00 (on the phone). To my surprise they told me that it was such an easy adjustment that there was no charge. I feel that Derby was either trying to make an easy easy 50 bucks, or that the service guy was not knowledgeable. I saw him work on another bike, and I feel his knowledge was adequate, just out to take my cash.... I fully prepared to pay a fair amount for they skills and abilities, of which I don't have, but found their quote out of line. While my wife was talking to the service tech, I looked around the store. They have an amazing inventory. I have been buying bikes from Derby Bicycle since 2006. Being an avid Mountain biker, I have purchased 3 mountain bikes for myself, two for my son, three cruiser bikes, one fat bike, and two Stryders for my grandchildren. Oh, and a BMX bike for my son when he was younger. I have never dealt with a more helpful, professional staff than I have with Bill and his Crew. He is fair and very knowledgeable, and has more parts and bikes to choose from than any other place I have ever seen. This is the ONLY place I shop for my bikes. Some prices can be higher than what one would find at a big chain and definitely more than at a Walmart or other Big Box, but I am OK with that. Common sense tells me that an independent bike shop will have more overhead and needs to have higher margins in order to keep the lights on and maintain good stock and retain good staff. Plus, one look around will tell you that this owner really cares about his business, as clean and professional as he maintains the property and the almost overwhelming inventory he maintains. My experience with him is that he buys quantity of new product, and when the others do not have the latest bike from Specialized, his answer is "which color do you want it in?" You cannot do this by giving away product at low margin, and time has proven by the number of IBS' that are no longer around as a result of not charging enough. Because of this sound business practice, I have comfort in knowing that Derby will stay around to service my bike as I need. To the gentleman complaining about the price of cheap pedals at Derby vs. Walmart, no duh! What a moron... Walmart probably buys thousands of pairs compared to the dozen or so I imagine that Derby does.... I bet they sell them for less than Derby can buy, and they have slim margins as they sell on volume and thus one of the main reasons that many thousands of small business have closed their doors. A smart business like Bill's maintains a healthy margin so they can survive, and survive he does. I am very thankful for that. NOT A RIPOFF! You ripped yourself off, dude, by not shopping around for the best price if that was your priority... This is one of the reasons I can't stand Yelp, because you get a bunch of people who do not have a fair view of how a business is run and maintained. People are so quick to judge a small business when they have never had to run one themselves. I commend Derby and support small business, because if you don't, the only choice you will have at some point is the big box Walmart. Please take the time to check out this marvel of a bike shop. If you are looking for a cruiser, this is the place to go for great selection and very helpful/friendly service. Not sure what a more serious cyclist would think of the joint. probably not the best shop for those needs. Me, I'm just a girly girl who was looking for a funky cruiser and they had so many cool choices, it was hard to decide. One star off cause the basket I bought for $40 didn't even last me for 24 hours before breaking. Though I will say that I put an 8 pack of tall boy Red Stripe cans in it and then bounced over some bumps on the way home, so kind of my fault for thinking a flimsy wicker basket was anything more than a muffin carrier.... I came in this store to buy bike pedals and the cheapest I was given were a pair of $18 Bell Sports Kicks 350 Replacement Bicycle Pedals. Since this is a bike store, I figured pricing would be a little steap, but you get what you pay for, right?. The next day, for grins and giggles, I thought to go look at Walmart, see what they had. I found, at Walmart, the exact same pair of pedals, rivets, night reflectors and all, for about $8 after tax. Not only did Derby rip me off on a pair of $8 pedals, when I went to take them back, the owner was extremely rude and abrasive and demanded a receipt. Rebecca, whom helped me with the transaction, was wonderful and so kind. I am concerned, if the owner of the company (picture is attached of owner, here on yelp) is willing to treat his customers like garbage, how horrible is he treating his lovely staff. Abe at Derby is probably the best bicycle "consultant" around - he takes the time to listen to your needs, asks the probing questions that help target your cycling goals, and presents the available options that would fit your needs. Sure you can find a "professional" that will do the same and fit you into what you want, but Abe just does it better. The selection of bikes at Derby cover most anything you could want among the various brands that they carry meaning that you can find the starter bikes for your little tikes, BMX racers, cruisers, rock movers, road racers, and hard-core specialized bikes for serious athletes. I was happy with a purchase that I made for my son, and came back to buy bikes for the whole family as a result. Sure, there are plenty of local and chain bikes stores where you can find a friendly sales person to help you buy a bike, but most of the time I don't really feel the need to go back. The experience and customer service of Abe, and the rest of the team really put Derby at the top of the list when I suggest a place for friends to go when looking for a new bike. I ranked them 4/5 stars only because I had reservations about the service staff - a situation that has since been corrected. read more

We have to use these guys all of the time. Bill, Collin and Abe our stars and they help me out to no end. Anyone that rides a bicycle in Colorado knows that you get those little hard rock things that have the thorns on them and you cannot have a regular tube. Bill told us why we were having to constantly patch the tubes and we got new tubes and were able to ride without worry because it became a real issue with a flat tire every time we rode because we like to ride serious. The bicycles that they sell are of the highest quality and not only that once you buy one you were like family and they are ready to help maintain your purchase throughout the ownership. I will try to add pictures of the bicycle we just bought my nine-year-old daughter. Put it this way, if you want to get the best bike that money can buy and you want to support system to make sure you're not walking out and meeting to be a bike expert to keep it together I completely recommend these guys. I roast people on yelp but I also give people credit when do. This is a forum to make sure people can get what they want by trusting honest people. This is the most honest review you can get and even if you just want to spend a day seeing something neat go by there and look at the set up it is incredible and there is something for everyone. Even if you just need the most hip accessories for your bicycle they have it. Today was my first visit to Derby, i felt like I accomplished something when I figured out where the front door was located. If you are claustrophobic do not go in to the store, it is overwhelming. I asked the owner where the cyclocross bikes were located, he informed me that the season was over and they did not have much left, really?, I'm pretty sure it just started. The cyclocross bikes were jammed behind a bunch of other bikes, he showed me where they were and walked away. I am very interested in riding that category of bike and he walked away. Wow! I've worked in the bike industry before and I would have never done what he did. Is the store just jamming the space with inventory and hoping they'll have something for the buyer? This store isn't interested in helping you find the right bike, they are just hoping they have the right one in inventory to satisfy your immediate appeal. I will gladly spend my money some where else, even if it costs me more. read more

Christmas time of the year and new peddles for two cycle crazed kids will be the best thing under the tree! Bill, the owner remembered me and my son from earlier in the summer when we stopped in to buy some tubes and a bell! He let my son test ride a bike and was very helpful. I remembered that and the fact that a buy back is offered on bikes was key with growing boy & girl of mine! The only warning I would offer is if your claustrophobic or only like one or two models to choose from don't step inside Derby Bicycle Center as the selection will make you dizzy! ;-) read more

Just bought my second bike from Derby. After 8 years of perfect performance from my first Specialized bike from Derby, I decided it was time to add a second, newer one. Derby staff was more than patient while I looked at several bikes, and they answered all my questions, making suggestions that were within my budget and explaining the differences in various accessories. There was a problem the day after I brought it home, in that one of the upgraded tubes I had them install, failed, and the tire would not hold air. I contacted Derby and they had me bring it in right away, and took care of it immediately, apologizing for the trouble. EVERY company can make mistakes, but it is how a company handles them that demonstrates true customer service. When the time comes, I will return to Derby for my 3rd bike, and meanwhile recommend them to anyone shopping for a bicycle. read more

I wanted to drop off my bikes for repair, so I stopped by, the sign said 'Open Monday to Friday", but they were closed. I called and got their hours. Open Tuesday to Friday. So we did but that staff was rude and told us they would call us when the bikes were ready do not call them. Have been going to DB for as long as I have been out in CO - 14 years now. Repairs are always sound. Say hi to Abe. Also my daughter purchased a bike for college there and was given sound advice about the type of bike and accessories to get for our price range. They took my mountain bike and equipped it with taller handle bars and cables for sweet upright "harley-like" ride. Repairs are made in a day or two depending on the issue. I don't drive much any more and take the bus and ride my bike instead. For the abuse I put my bike under being a bigger guy, they keep my ride going. read more

I promise to be truthful The Specialized website indicated that this authorized distributor was the only shop within 100 miles which had a particular bike. I visited. First impression of the shop was clutter. After the first few seconds I liked it and appreciated that it was just enthusiasm for bikes and the truth that brick and mortar inventory diversity is essential to survive. Nice. But it was kind of tight. They had too much parking (nice) and too little floor space. The location was convenient and valuable space so the owner will create an add-on once the cash is baked. It'll be great! We got the bike. There were 2 people, a light bearded mechanic and a mature man with a little salt in his hair who was friendly. At checkout we asked about return policy. The guy said "none". I repeated back "I can't return the bike?". He confirmed with "no". Not appealing but they had the last bike apparently and there was no plan to return it. He tried to upsell pedals so that's good. The mechanic prepped the bike. He seemed preoccupied but wasn't rude at all. I got confused because he took the bike to the back door and then handed it over to me. I was expecting to exit the front door, which is part of the neurotransmitter rush we Consumers get when we step into public with our brand new toys. No big deal, just odd vs other experiences. After roughly 1 week of riding the bike more than a few things became evidently loose, the worst being the headset. The bike wasn't assembled to torque specs, perhaps only finger tight on several key fasteners. Otherwise the bike has been great. My fault but because Derby was so unsupportive when I asked about return policy, I felt they would not support me with any sort of request for guidance fixing the headset issue, so I never called or visited. Also my fault, but I am the Customer, I likely won't go back to Derby (unless they have the last bike!) due to the return policy given on this Specialized bicycle, which was "None" - no return. I love derby bicycle center. I have bought 2 bikes and and a scooter from them among other things. The staff has always been super helpful and nice. They took the time to thoroughly go over the bike and functions. There is no rush and pressure to get you in or out. I bought my first bike a couple months a ago and the next day had buyers remorse. They gladly let me exchange my bike and upgrade to another bike. Hands down the best service I have had at a bike shop. Derby will by far be my preferred choice with all of my cycling needs! read more

Disappointed with Derby Bicycle Center. This is my first review on yelp and I don't usually throw businesses under the bus like this, but this experience with Derby Bicycle Center pissed me off. Sunday, Late afternoon, raining, went to look at Kink BMX Bikes with my son Steven, he has been saving his money for a new bike. Ended up looking at a Haro Downtowner DLX marked on Sale for $249.97, he reeeeealy liked it. It was closing time, so I confirmed with the sales guy the price and that he did have several more in stock, yes they had several...no problem right? Call back Monday morning 18 hours later to see if they had the White Haro Downtowner DLX in stock instead of the Black Bike with the Blue tires. The answer was no they would have to order that one. Is the price for that one still $249? No that bike is $329, and so is the Black Bike with the Blue Tires. It was mis-marked yesterday. If you bought it yesterday we could have sold it to you, but not today the owner says. Now it's $329. I have a picture of it from yesterday with the $249.97 price tag on it. Owner says, sorry I can't sell it for that. I say thank you I will find someplace else to Shop. I can appreciate Derby Bicycle's stance, but I hope it's worth the $80 to you. We traveled 30 miles in the rain, because you were a Kink BMX Dealer and you were the closest for that brand. If I had called a week or two later and you had adjusted the price or didn't want to honor that price I would understand, but when I call the next day and you don't honor the price that YOU had on the bike... that's ridiculous!
