Dexter's Deli knows more about cat food than regular pet stores. I assume it's the same for dog food, but I'm a cat person. Pet food is what they do. So they have stuff other places don't, and they can make pretty good predictions about what your pet will eat, and cats can be picky. The only issue (at the North Park store) is parking. That's not their fault. I especially like the big poster that says: "I have lived with many Zen masters. All of them were cats." read more

I love Dexter's! They always have pup cakes and cupcakes available so no need to order ahead if you're in a pinch. They will also write your pup's name on the cake in house. Staff are always super friendly and I love their loyalty program. I grab my dogs' Stella and chewy's food here and the (I think) 6th bag is always free. We are Dexter's customers for life! We live in North Park, so that location is very convenient for us. Everyone that works here is so friendly and knowledgeable. We also love getting the Pupcakes to celebrate doggie birthdays! They offer a great variety of high quality food and natural supplements for your furry friend. They also have a points program if you sign up, and they will offer free treats for holidays and special occasions. The only downsides? I've gone to Dexter's Deli a few times before and they are for sure a 5 star store. The employees there are always so friendly and super helpful. Very attentive and also knowledgeable about their products to make great recommendations for treats to try out on my pup. Now comes to my reason for the 1 star based on my experience today. I specifically called the store before heading over, as a round trip it is an hour drive for me, asking if they had any birthday pup cakes. I was told they had one left, and I was specifically told that the cake would be put in the back for me. Great right!? Arriving at the store, I saw as they sold the last cake to someone else!! I was in shock that what I was told over the phone was not clearly what happened as I was left with dinky cupcakes for my pup's 4th birthday. It is bad experiences like this really leave customers like myself with a bad impression of the company. And to update to the response that I received from the business, I was specifically told that the last cake would be saved for me. I've been going to dexters deli for quite some time. The staff is always so helpful and willing to chat about any of my concerns. Recently, my dog was really sick, it seemed it was one thing after another and the vets were not being straight forward. Nicole helped me that day and we chatted for about 30 mins as I expressed all my concerns and frustrations. She recommended some food and a couple supplements and my dog is doing fantastic again!! If you need a dog cake this is the place for you! They have pre-made cakes in their fridge. All you need to do is walk in and pick one. I believe they have about 3 sizes. The cake is more of a giant cookie with the frosting. The medium size one was more than enough for my golden retriever. They can also write a message on the cake for you! Very inexpensive! read more

First, funny story - thanks to their Share the Love program, my sweet boy Luigi got to try Primal's raw nuggets as a topper to a few of his meals. He LOVED them so much, he went on a hunger strike when we ran out and scared both me and my boyfriend into thinking something was wrong with him... turns out Luigi just demands the finer things in life and wasn't eating because it was just kibble LOL. So I'm now a regular at Dexter's and I cannot rave enough about this place. From the well priced quality pet items, their rewards program (AMAZING rewards program!!!!), the cute pet parent merch, to the friendly staff, you just don't get this experience in those big box pet stores. The staff are so helpful and knowledgeable, not just in their products but with interacting with the dogs that come into the store as well! This last time we went to Dexter's, we decided to bring Luigi. We've now had him for 4 months so we're practicing outings. One of the staff offered a treat and Luigi wanted to take the treat but was unsure and staff was so patient and understanding with him! She even tried 2 more types of treats before he took one and you could see him unwinding and getting comfortable in this very new and overwhelming setting. My dog LOVES Dexter's. She knows the store by name. The staff are super friendly and helpful and are true animal lovers. Buffy is quite shy but LOVES seeing the staff here :) She walks right up to the counter every visit. I love their selection of goodies, both for eating and not. I have gotten Buffy's birthday hats here and her Halloween costume here. My dog is a very picky eater, and is quite content with their treat options. She always eats the freebies given to her by staff. Dexter's is also one of the only places I can get her favorite chews (trachea tubes and beef cheek rolls). I wish she liked their cakes more, but she's never been a fan of any doggy cakes. Dexter's also has a lot of awesome deals -BOGOs, discounts, frequent buyer freebies, and seasonal freebies. I swear I end up coming here every week, but Buffy doesn't complain! I get compliments on my dog all the time and I have to give some credit to Dexter's. I've been coming here for years but lately I notice some new faces. Today I witness a guy ring up a pregnant lady with a toddler. She was paying for a big bag of frozen food and I can tell it's heavy bcoz it was full. She was trying her best to be quick before her son break anything. She was carrying this heavy frozen brown bag, a big bag of cat food while trying to get her toddler out of the store. It would have been nice if the guy that was helping her offer to help her to carry the bag to her car or open the door. He even watch her try to get everything with her one hand so she can hold her toddler on the other hand. I wish the cashier helped her. I recently found out that they carry my Furr Baby's food. Not only does the bag come in a bigger size but they have adult large and adult small pieces. No more ordering on line! Went back on Labor Day to replenish goods that Lori gave me, as my Zazu is asking for more, more, more please. I'd rung to make sure they were open and Stephanie greeted me and confirmed, Yes Open!!! Hooray! Nicole helped me and was ever so helpful, even carrying my bag out to the car, which was very much appreciated. Of course, we talked 'dogs, cats etc'. How could you not and she showed me her little 8 yr old, gorgeous baby girl. I met Stephanie, another about delight to the Store and even though I bought ahead, I can't wait to go back and buy again. I don't think Dexter's would know how to hire anyone that wasn't loving, caring and wanting to help all fur kids. It's unfortunate that a human could make coming to Dexters not fun at all. I live more than an hour away from Dexters and try to combine a visit with other stops in the area. The cost of gas and travel time doesn't allow regular visits. I always brings our puppy who enjoys a treat. I'm on the Dexters mailing list and get texts when there are specials like BOGO's or free treats. I usually don't go the day I get the text but the earliest opportunity I drop in. We drove to Dexters after I got a text about free treats and stopped at the park to play frisbee before we came in. At the store I was greeted by a pleasant young man and a regular employee who greeted my like a debt collector, almost as if she was annoyed I came in...maybe she was annoyed because I mentioned the text I received. She snapped that the text was for the other day and it wasn't valid...oh well. I grabbed a $17 Bully Stick chew and brought it out to the fur baby. So I left disappointed, disappointed that I made such a long trip across county, the cost of gas I spent, $17 for a treat....and unfriendly service. It's a store for pets, with good products and my furry family member could care less about the people who work there or their attitudes...so there's that. A coffee at Communal Coffe made me feel a little better. read more

Dexter's Deli is an amazing local shop that my pup and I enjoy visiting for all of our needs, and I hope that more people come and support this local business! My dog gets so excited to come here because she's greeted with treats and headpats, and we always go home with something fun or tasty. They have a great selection of toys, food, treats, and all sorts of other supplies that you might need for both dogs and cats. They carry The Honest Kitchen, which I had been searching for in order to switch my dog over to the dehydrated whole grain chicken. They also have coupons, a loyalty points program, and if you purchase the same food each time, you end up getting one for free after a certain number of repurchases. Everyone that works here has been very kind and helpful when I have come to visit, especially Stephanie. We recently learned that my pup has cancer and we came in to pick up a bunch of treats and goodies after a difficult appointment. Stephanie greeted us and took the time to talk with us with such great care and understanding, and recommended some supplements and tips on how to navigate treatment and recovery. This meant so much to me, and I cannot thank her enough. She remembered us the next time we came to visit, and is just one of the kindest and sweetest people we have met. 07/03/20 - came here today for birthday cupcakes for my little pup. This is a pretty cool store. A lot of cool items here and good selection of treats for the pups. They have safety protocols in place. They monitor people coming in and there are clearly marked spaces outside. I will definitely come back here. Highly recommend a visit. Parking lot is available but can get very busy since there's a couple restaurant in the strip mall. Staff was very nice and helpful. I saw a few of them helping people with their needs. I am so grateful for this health conscious doggie store! I came on here to give a big shoutout to LORI!! She is amazing, extremely knowledgeable, kind, and has such beautiful energy! I went in a few weeks ago and had a ton of questions and she was so knowledgeable and answered each one. She also gave me a few different gently cooked food samples for my Yorkie to try. My Yorkie has severe allergies and I've been trying all sorts of different things from skin treatments, etc but it just keeps coming back. Trying Cessorex and different foods until one sticks. Thank you for your help Lori! I also first came here last year for teeth cleaning. I am so so grateful they partnered up with Qualified Pet Dental to offer anesthesia free teeth cleaning. I try to be as holistic as possible with my pups. I was saddened when another integrative/holistic vet up north said my Yorkie was going to need deep teeth cleaning that would have required anesthesia. Possibly the same for my other pup. I was looking at not only a few thousand- yikes- but also filling my pups up with meds. -_- I brought them here and let them know what I was told. QPD was very transparent and the technicians said they would evaluate and if they couldn't clean due to the issue being to extreme they would let me know. Thankfully, they were able to treat my York's little shark teeth!! They were able to carefully get in there to remove the issues. They also indicated that contrary to the other eval I had received, she didn't need any teeth removed! They gave a me a sheet for both pups with detailed notes and recommendations. They even have more holistic type preventative teeth treatments. I will definitely be back for routine deep teeth cleaning. Thank you Dexter's for even having this option, and for QPD for making their way down from OC to help our SD fur babies. Lastly, I have been on the hunt for a holistic vet and haven't found any in the area. I've had to drive far up north, although was grateful I had even found one to begin with. That was until Dexter's recommended Bird Rock hospital. I've only been there once and they honestly know their shit and do the best they can to provide as holistic type treatment if possible. I called back to inquire as a follow up and Dr. Marzden recommended Cessorex to help with my pups allergies. We'll see how this goes. It definitely didn't feel like a money grab either. I only come to this location to get special treats for the doggos on their birthdays. First time I went here, I had an amazing experience, staff were friendly and helpful. 2nd visit, not so great. The staff, 2-3 of them all stood behind the counter, talking amongst themselves, and there were probably 3 customers in the store.
