There are always plenty of knowledgeable employees available to answer my questions and they have never been pushy or have tried to upsell me. It is always a calm, relaxing experience when I shop. When I mentioned my cat wouldn't eat a certain blend of food from my previous visit, they offered to return it for me! Again, they could have stayed quiet and kept the money. It just goes to show how much they value their customers. Nicole has answered so many questions for me and is always super helpful. Cats are weird, picky little creatures. The amount of joy I felt after walking into this store is indescribable. They have the best of the BEST food for dogs and cats. Dexter's deli is an independently owned pet store in North Park and in North County San Diego. I haven't bought pet food here but I've bought dog toys, accessories, and grooming supplies here. They have all of the best brands that are hard to find at big box stores. The UpCountry dog collars are on the pricey side, about $30 each, but well worth the cost! I got one for my dog when she was a puppy, four years ago, and it still looks brand new. If you're unsure about a product, they do have a generous return policy (30-days) for most items. For instance, I bought a travel carrier last week with the intention of mounting it onto my bike like a basket for my dog. The dimensions weren't right, and they let me easily return the item with my receipt. They can also do returns by looking up your phone number. The staff is extremely friendly and always willing to give recommendations. Also if an item is not in stock they offer to send you a text when it is back in the store/ hold it for you! read more

What a great spot! I only came across this store as my dog eats Fromm Dog Food, and I have bought it online for 5 years out here in San Diego, because no place locally sold it (at the time). His order was delayed, so I looked on the Fromm website to see if anyone sold it and Dexter's came up. They have a ton of Fromm products (in two different aisles-the first one didn't have what I needed and I almost left, glad I turned the corner.). Anyways it was the same price as online, but local! So I will definitely be coming here from now on. Also the staff is amazing. They gave my dog Rocko a ton of treats that he LOVED, leading him to be crazy jumping all over them for more . Came here post-first wave of the pandemic (so the period that felt relatively safe to be out and about) and was pleasantly surprised to find the store was adhering strictly to social distancing guidelines (only 2 customers in the store at a time). The two staff members were both really good about checking how many customers were in the store and stopped me from entering the store. It was perhaps 10 minutes standing in the cold (ok fine, San Diego cold isn't that bad) and my dog, Baymax, was getting frustrated having to wait but I was glad to do it! Thank you to the staff for enforcing safety rules! I know most others places don't because it's really uncomfortable to confront customers. The store is quite small inside but stocked full of goodies. The items Dexter's Deli carries are usually produce by smaller manufacturers and businesses so it feels good to shop from here. Most of the items they carry here are not found in other stores. The prices are pretty high (roughly 50% more expensive than mass-produced snacks and foods available at larger retailers) but the quality of items sold here is definitely higher. My dog is very, very picky. Most of the treats I buy him end up in the trash but he has thus far eaten everything I bought him from here. I am not sure the name of the sales associate who helped us but she was really nice about giving Baymax tons of snacks. He doesn't like shopping with me but after this, Baymax was super happy to go around the store. We'd love to come by to shop again! read more

Of all the pet stores I've been to, you know the corporate chains I'm talking about, this is the best pet store in San Diego. They have the friendliest staff who are really knowledgeable about everything that they carry. They let you try things out in store. I tried on a couple of harnesses and leashes with my dog and walked around the store while we were browsing and the staff was happy to oblige. They're really knowledgeable about all the foods that they carry and the products they carry as well. They also always give my little guy treats which I appreciate. They have a great rewards program as well and their prices are competitive I ended up going to one of those corporate places to look at leashes and harnesses but ended up buying some here for what I feel like with a lower cost. Dexters is fantastic! I went in to get dog treats. My poor pup is having spring allergies. Which dexters sent me an email on a few days precious. I picked up my treats and started talking with the staff about my pup, and his allergies. They do know their stuff. We talked about his symptoms, age and all that. And found something that's cheaper and likely way more effective and healthier then what I've been doing. I try so hard to be a good dog mom, and dexters helps me be the best dog mom I can. The shop is cute and has excellent products but I unfortunately had a bad experience with customer service which is why I am writing this review. I purchased a birthday cake for my mom's dog and had a couple calls with the staff as I was playing middle man for my mom and needed to get her input on what size cake she wanted and what color frosting she wanted the writing in when I found out they couldn't do yellow. The cake order was finalized and I asked for red hearts on top which I saw someone else had done in their yelp review picture and they staff said that they could do it. I then picked up the cake and saw that the hearts were red but outlined in a thick black border which really changed the look of the heart. It wasn't a big deal but I thought it was worth asking of they could remove the black heart and replace with a plain red heart like what I requested. My disappointment starts with their service from here. The woman I spoke with told me that it would not be possible to remove the black heart and sounded pretty bored with my question and like she was ready to end the convo there. Surprised with that reply, I asked her what they could do to fix this and she told me that I would have to BUY another cake if I want to have a plain red heart. I explained that I do not want to purchase another cake when I simply want a red heart like what I originally requested and she did not offer another solution and again sounded like she was ready to end the conversation. Not knowing what else could be done but wanting this fixed, I then asked her if they could put more red on top of the black to make it a red heart and she said that it would not look good in a flat tone and left it at that. I told her that it would be worth trying to me rather than having a black heart and after more back and forth she took the cake back. The person who came out with the cake after that was then the owner/manager of the store and I found her to be quite rude. She started off by saying that they are not a bakery and she made it sound like I was being a difficult customer with my request for a red heart. She mentioned how I had wanted yellow frosting and I told her that that was no big deal to me and I simply was confused about the red heart. She went on and on about how they are not a bakery and they just hire people to decorate the cakes and I seriously felt like she was blowing it out of proportion. I explained to her that I simply wanted a red heart and had they wanted to add a big black border to it I wish that they had called me to ask me if that would've been OK since I am the paying customer. She mentioned a couple of times that this is not an expensive cake as if I should be happy with what I get which I also thought was not great service (guilt trip the customer?). Anyways, it was a lot of drama over a red heart on a tiny cake. I would have been fine taking it home as it was had they immediately taken ownership of the issue and sounded a bit more empathetic. Instead, they left a sour taste in my mouth and here I am leaving this review. One last point, I left the cake out of the fridge for 30 minutes prior to eating as they suggested and the black bled out making it look black still. read more

Let me start off by saying the product here is pretty good, they definitely had what i wanted for my pup! Im giving 3 stars for the service though, I couldn't help but feel like everyone who was there + working there kind of prejudice and made it seem like they had never seen a tattooed lady or a pit bull before or both at the same time lol. Anyways, i walked in the two ladies that were working were hanging out with a guy that had 3 pups which i thought was pretty cool. There was a rad looking slow feeder that i also saw upon coming in and that was something i was looking for on this trip so i was super excited. I wasn't approached once while i was here, which was totally fine, but when i did have a question one of the ladies was nice enough to help me out. I did work in north park for a long time at an ice cream shop that was around the corner and i still to this day have friends that work and own shops around there and i've never been looked at as an outsider. Even when i would help customers at the ice cream shop no customer was ever made feel different because they had tattooed or were whatever color, or dresses however they dressed. Everyone else that came in after me were greeted and helped as soon as they came in. Also i was waiting at the register for someone to come and then another customer that had come in after me was helped right away and then me right after which threw me off lol At the end of the day my puppy really liked the bones and raw food i got her :) don't know if i'll go back but it definitely is a place worth checking out! read more

Dexter's Deli is doing all the cautionary stuff, 2 customers allowed in the store at a time, masks on all the employees, and the place is marked out for safely social distancing while inside the store. Lola and I appreciated all the safety. However, even with all the safety precautions, the customer service is excellent and the shelfs are well stocked. I have owned dogs for quite awhile in my life and I feel Dexter's offers top quality products for not just my dogs but all puppies. I've been here several times since I discovered them in North Park. I like the selection but not some of the employees. Charlie always speaks and is cordial and friendly. He's the only reason I came back several times. For some reason, the other employees choose not to say hello or welcome me in the store, but they quickly welcome people that are not melanated and they also get a "thank you". I just got a "there you go" with my receipt. My perspective is the customer should always be "thanked ", especially in a small establishment such as this. read more

Yes!!! I found this place on yelp that sells birthday cake at a reasonable price (~$12), and they are opened fairly late compared to other pet bakeries. Everywhere else was about $25+. However, the cake size may be bigger, but my pup does not need to eat the whole cake! The staff here was super friendly and they wrote my pup's name on the cake! It was our first time here! I dropped in this afternoon to find some training treats. The staff were extremely helpful, and we left with so many yummy yummy treats and food. My rescue pup, Captain, loved the entire experience, especially when the staff showered her with love and treats. She kept sniffing her goodie bag all the way home! We'll definitely be back.
