We came on a Saturday afternoon around 1:30p. Seating area was full but we were able to grab a table for 4 by the time our food was ready. The vibe inside was cool. The place is very clean and nicely decorated. They had a wide selection to choose from. I ended up with the Crunchy Chili Garlic Chicken for myself and the Nama Chicken Katsu for my wife. We also ordered 2 Unagi, Egg, Spam Masubi and a spicy crab inari. I'll begin with portion size. My one order was easily enough for 2 people. They are very generous with the main dish and rice and macaroni. The Crunchy Chili Garlic Chicken was okay. It's definitely something I wouldn't try again. It was crunchy and sweet, but I was expecting a little more; maybe more spicy, maybe more sweet. It was just missing something for me. I had some of the Nama Katsu, which was also just okay for me. I prefer a more crispy, crunchy katsu. This katsu felt a little soggy for me. Not bad, but not my preference. The Masubis were massive. I could barely fit it in my mouth. Again, I applaud the generous portion, but I found it hard to eat. I prefer a smaller form factor. The Spicy Crab inari was pretty good. No complaints. All in all, it's a nice spot to try. It's a much nicer place than an L&L or Hawaiian Drive Inn. I also like the grocery store portion which had tons of cool products. That said, the items I tried didn't wow me. I'll likely go back and try a few other items. I'm sure they have a few items that would be an absolute hit for me. It's all about trial and error. The very definition of a hole in the wall place. Such a hidden gem tucked away in San Bruno on El Camino. This place is an elevated L&L or Ono Hawaiian Restaurant. The portions are huge and well worth the price. I went for the tried and true Mochiko Chicken which is a breaded dish. Perfect breading and great flavor. I doused it with the Hawaiian Chili Pepper Water and it was even more fire. Not only do they serve hot food here but they have a fairly extensive Hawaiian foods Market. Haven't been here since they re-branded from Morningwood to Diamond Head...the long wait or closing of their waiting list was the primary factor of my not returning until now. Present day experience for me--still lines, but now order at the counter, you can take away or dine in at any open table. During peak times, it still gets crowded and you need to wait, but it seems to move fast. While waiting on one side, you can look at the many varieties of musubi & onigiri--hard to resist and next to you are shelves of Hawaiian snacks. So easy to grab and go treats and snacks while you are standing there waiting to place your order at the counter--there's a extensive variety--Cookkwee's from Maui are my favorite and plenty of crack seed to choose from, another weakness of mine. My only observation is that there were no price listing under the items. In the freezer section, my favorite items are the Zippy's Chili, S&S Saimin. and the lau laus. If you want just a simple refreshing shave ice, you can get it here too and the prices are reasonable. I ordered the hamburger steak and the furikake mahi--was maybe pricey (seafood is always more expensive), but that should not deter you, the quantity and quality is what it's about (and it's cheaper than airfare to Hawaii). We were served generous portions and even had leftovers to take home. Two pieces of mahi mahi came with our order, long thick pieces and the hamburger steak was a huge meatloaf patty, over rice and covered in onion gravy. So damn tasty! The storefront is open until 5, but know that the kitchen closes around 2ish. Some of the more popular dishes do sell out, so just in case your preferred plate lunch sells out, have a back up in mind. If you lower your expectations, Diamond Head General Store could be an OK place to dine-in. There was a 20 minute wait to order at the cashier at 2pm on a Sunday. This is the type of restaurant were you order at the cashier and they will yell out your name. I'm not sure why I tipped as they serve all the food in to-go containers. It is sort of like L&L Hawaiian BBQ. Personally, I prefer to use silverware and real dishes if I'm eating inside a restaurant. I ordered the Fried Mochiko Chicken $18. This took about 15 minutes for the food to come out. Mochiko is a sweet Japanese rice flour sometimes used in Hawaiian cuisine. This came with a salty and sweet sauce on the bottom of the to-go container. The white rice was the best part of this dish. It is fluffy and moist. The fried chicken left me with a weird aftertaste in my mouth. I like the old Morning Wood restaurant better. This is supposed to be run by the same people. If you ask for water, the cashier will make it sound like he is doing you a favor. The tables are pretty dirty. The workers are too busy getting the orders out. Guests are expected to bus their own trays. There's isn't a place to put the used trays. I've seen guests put used trays back where the new trays are. Kinda gross. Sooo ono! I lived on Oahu for almost 15 years and their food is legit! There is a convenient menu board to the right when you enter and there's a cute aloha sign when you walk in. True local kine vibes. They have several shelves that sell dry goods, including haupia (coconut pudding) which I bought n addition to several plates. I bought lunch to share with 2 friends & got some local favorites: loco moco with beef patty, garlic butter shrimp & ahi poke (shoyu style). Food: I just came back from a trip from Hawaii and was very much missing the food there. This place offers goodies that are, dare I say, a bit better than what I've had in Waikiki! Their Musubis and onigiris are stuffed to the brim with toppings. Their plates fed my husband and I for 2 whole days from how generous they are with their protein. Came in on a Thursday around noon and it was packed! Line was a little long but it moved at a fair paste! Their store is packed with goodies you'd typically find on the island so I was happy seeing some things that I could grab in the bay VS traveling all the way to the islands! Service was straight to the point, with a casual and open ambiance. The store can get packed before and after peak lunch hours. You're better off finding street parking instead of trying to turn into the small parking lot. We ordered the Mochiko Chicken, Chili Crisp Chicken, and ended the meal with getting 2 flavors of shaved ice: POG (Passionfruit Orange Guava) Mango and Lihing Gummy. Tucked onto the side of ECR, this bastion of all things Hawaiian is a godsend for those missing the staples of island living such as authentic Poke, sweet Hawaiian ice or a huge plate of Loco Moco, guaranteed to sate even the hungriest diner. On today's food post, I feature a Hawaiian restaurant/store that I've been meaning to visit for a spell and today, I made the effort and I'm glad I did. It gave me that Pacific islandy feeling, the easy-going "what's-da-hurry brah" attitude that I grew up in and know so well. I had the Hawaiian-Style Fried Chicken, sort of like chicken-tenders on steroids with white rice and the compulsory macaroni salad. It was, as they say, "Ono," meaning delicious, tasty and savory. First time back here after they turned it into a general store. Love that they offer Hawaiian goodies and still offer some of their food options from when they were previously known as Morning Wood. Just came in here to get something small so I ordered the Japataters. They also offer premade musubis that are ready to go. Um. Wow. First off, the portions are generous, and that's a good thing. Because you'll be wanting more. The people who took our order were very friendly, and willing to answer questions. This had a general store kind of vibe, with shelves of foods for your pantry, and fresh items too. You'll see many familiar items if you've traveled to Hawaii. For plates, they had Loco Moco, Hamburger steak, and more. We had the BBQ Chicken Plate, and a Kalua Pork and Cabbage plate. Wow. So delicious. There were also Spam Musubi, Onigiri, and Poke bowls.
