Lots of items that are Hawaii based. There's a small dining area to the other side of the store and food counter, with a bar top seating area facing out the windows. My wife ordered a poke bowl and the fish was very fresh. They use chili crisp which adds a little heat and lots of umami but ends up being slightly salty if you're not eating it with rice or greens. The crusted ono was definitely a sleeper! Flakey and crispy exterior with a meaty and dense interior. Their mac salad is refreshing and not too heavy. Been wanting to try this place after seeing it on social media! Parking is limited, but there is street parking available. My husband and I came in and ordered food - loco moco, garlic shrimp and crab mac salad. The portions are huge - we loved that the garlic shrimp was peeled already and the sauce was great. I feel like I hit the jack pot when I stumbled across this Hawaiian market. It's hard to find places that offer a variety of musubi like you'd get in Hawaii. I discovered Diamond Head general store on Tiktok awhile back and had it bookmarked for some time now. We dropped my mom off at SFO and I was going through my bookmarks of places to eat in SF. My bf ordered the fried Mochiko chicken. While waiting for our order, I browsed through the aisles of Hawaiian groceries. I ended up buying lychee sour belts, li hing gummies, shrimp chips, and their dessert special of the day, fresh matcha strawberry mochi lol. Now I probably spent about $70 for my two entree and snacks; a bit pricy lol. The portions were huge!!! The chicken pieces were nice and big, with a crispy panko coating, brushed with a sweet glaze. We've tried mochiko chicken in Maui at Tin Roof, and this was soooo much better; my bf and I both agreed. The loco moco meatloaf was as big as the container they packed it in! Kids wanted to stop here after seeing this shop featured on Check Please and it was worth the visit! Our timing was perfect as there was no line to order and plenty of seating. Kids each got some musubis to go and they both ordered the mochiko chicken plate. I grabbed the crab inari three pack as well. The chicken! A huge portion with the two scoops of rice and Mac salad with star being the tender and juicy chicken. It tastes like it is brined which is so good to do. We came on a Saturday afternoon around 1:30p. Seating area was full but we were able to grab a table for 4 by the time our food was ready. The vibe inside was cool. The place is very clean and nicely decorated. They had a wide selection to choose from. I ended up with the Crunchy Chili Garlic Chicken for myself and the Nama Chicken Katsu for my wife. We also ordered 2 Unagi, Egg, Spam Masubi and a spicy crab inari. I'll begin with portion size. My one order was easily enough for 2 people. They are very generous with the main dish and rice and macaroni. The Crunchy Chili Garlic Chicken was okay. It's definitely something I wouldn't try again. It was crunchy and sweet, but I was expecting a little more; maybe more spicy, maybe more sweet. It was just missing something for me. I had some of the Nama Katsu, which was also just okay for me. I prefer a more crispy, crunchy katsu. This katsu felt a little soggy for me. Not bad, but not my preference. The Masubis were massive. I could barely fit it in my mouth. Again, I applaud the generous portion, but I found it hard to eat. I prefer a smaller form factor. The Spicy Crab inari was pretty good. No complaints. All in all, it's a nice spot to try. Haven't been here since they re-branded from Morningwood to Diamond Head...the long wait or closing of their waiting list was the primary factor of my not returning until now. Present day experience for me--still lines, but now order at the counter, you can take away or dine in at any open table. While waiting on one side, you can look at the many varieties of musubi & onigiri--hard to resist and next to you are shelves of Hawaiian snacks. So easy to grab and go treats and snacks while you are standing there waiting to place your order at the counter--there's a extensive variety--Cookkwee's from Maui are my favorite and plenty of crack seed to choose from, another weakness of mine. My only observation is that there were no price listing under the items. In the freezer section, my favorite items are the Zippy's Chili, S&S Saimin. and the lau laus. If you want just a simple refreshing shave ice, you can get it here too and the prices are reasonable. I ordered the hamburger steak and the furikake mahi--was maybe pricey (seafood is always more expensive), but that should not deter you, the quantity and quality is what it's about (and it's cheaper than airfare to Hawaii). We were served generous portions and even had leftovers to take home. Two pieces of mahi mahi came with our order, long thick pieces and the hamburger steak was a huge meatloaf patty, over rice and covered in onion gravy. So damn tasty! The storefront is open until 5, but know that the kitchen closes around 2ish. Some of the more popular dishes do sell out, so just in case your preferred plate lunch sells out, have a back up in mind. If you lower your expectations, Diamond Head General Store could be an OK place to dine-in. There was a 20 minute wait to order at the cashier at 2pm on a Sunday. This is the type of restaurant were you order at the cashier and they will yell out your name. I'm not sure why I tipped as they serve all the food in to-go containers. It is sort of like L&L Hawaiian BBQ. Personally, I prefer to use silverware and real dishes if I'm eating inside a restaurant. I ordered the Fried Mochiko Chicken $18. This took about 15 minutes for the food to come out. Mochiko is a sweet Japanese rice flour sometimes used in Hawaiian cuisine. This came with a salty and sweet sauce on the bottom of the to-go container. The white rice was the best part of this dish. It is fluffy and moist. The fried chicken left me with a weird aftertaste in my mouth. I like the old Morning Wood restaurant better. This is supposed to be run by the same people. If you ask for water, the cashier will make it sound like he is doing you a favor. The tables are pretty dirty. The workers are too busy getting the orders out. Guests are expected to bus their own trays. There's isn't a place to put the used trays. I've seen guests put used trays back where the new trays are. Kinda gross. The parking is horrible - there is a little parking area in front of the store, but a delivery van and truck took up spots that should be for customers. We thought we were gonna b standing to eat since it's a "counter order and find your table restaurant" and that definitely could not happen with my "senior parents"!
