The hype is real! When I first checked out Taco Loco, I didn't even notice this place. Maybe it wasn't there yet or maybe I'm just blind? I don't know. When I realized I had missed the opportunity, I was pretty disappointed, because I don't get out this way very often. I finally made it, and I mean it when I say, I can't believe how great this Mexican ice cream spot really is. My girlfriend and I were there on Sunday night, and it was pretty packed with kids running around and everything. The lines were a bit discombobulated, since you get smoothie/iced desserts in one area and ice cream/paletas at another, but it all looks like the same line. I'm sure you'll figure it out once you get there. My plan was to get a paleta, since ice cream is ice cream, but my girlfriend went with a scoop of cookies and cream (which they give you like 3 scoops), and she said it was some of the best ice cream she's had period. They had full cookies in there, so I gave it a try, and the vanilla was incredibly creamy and amazing. I was actually pretty amazed by how great it really was. Right before you get to the cash register, you'll find the paletas in their own freezer. With so many options I had to consult with the girl behind the counter, so I went with the Mango Chile and the Blackberry Cheese. For the 3 items, I think it was $11. Not bad at all. I went with the Mango Chile popsicle first, and it instantly reminded me of a margarita. Problem is I'm not a big margarita fan. However; I am a huge mango fan, and I downed it pretty quick. I can imagine if you love margaritas, you'd be a big fan of this one. My girlfriend not so much. I later had the Blackberry Cheese, and it was delicious. The creaminess of the popsicle matched my girlfriend's ice cream, and the use of actual blackberries, which are one of my favorite berries, was incredible. There's so many different items to get at this place, you could probably come here for a whole year and try something different each time. PALETAS. Now, I've been to the fancy, Americanized paleterias in Nashville and Philadelphia. This is not that kind of cute shop with precious flavors like raw coconut chai or chocolate chipotle (not that either one of those flavors wouldn't be delicious). This is legit Mexican paletas and nieves, like the ones I had in Mexico. The owner (? I'm guessing) told us that he makes them on site, and a huge rack of fresh fruits backed that story up. I was more into the paletas than the nieves, but there are dozens of flavors of both and they all looked great. In the paletas cooler, there were flavors like blackberry and cheese, Oreo (which is galleta if you're more familiar with the Mexican-Spanish names for flavors), strawberry (with and without cream), coconut, mango con chile, cucumber con chile, yellow cherry, dulce de leche, watermelon, rompope, butter pecan, pistachio, pineapple, mojito (gasps for air) and even more I am not remembering. I saw on the nieves side that there were some traditional flavors like butter strawberry, tamarind, and jamaica. Heaven, basically. It's a little tiny bit pricier than you would find in other places, but for the quality and for the fact that they have no paleta competition, I'm well happy to pay a tiny bit more. If you want to make a meal of it, they do seem to have some limited snack food.. OR, there's a bomb taco place right next door that even has good vegetarian tacos. Your call. In case you aren't in the know, paletas are a Mexican popsicle that feature really vibrant flavors. There are two types of paletas, either milk-based or water-based. Diamonds does both of them! That means my lactose-intolerant friends can enjoy too! Woot! My personal favorite is the milk-based chocolate. It's like a pudding pop, except without all the (now) uncomfortable references to the commercials in the 90s. I also love the oreo... it has REAL oreos in it. Like WHOLE oreos. IN. THE. PALETA. (nom) For non-milk, I love the strawberry. It's like a way better version of the one's your mom gave you on a hot summer day. Lastly... you've got to try the dulce de leche/cajeta. So many noms. If you've never had a Mexican popsicle, or nieves for that matter, you are in for a treat, my friend. I had the chance to try nieves during the Columbus Food Adventures Taco Truck Tour, and I was blown away by the taste and texture of this dessert. Besides having a name that sounds like a strip club, Diamonds has utterly amazing ice cream, surprisingly average popsicles (paletas), and unimpressive employees/customer service skills. We arrived on a Saturday at about 5:00pm and there were maybe 8 other customers sitting down and 3 in a line to the left of the ice cream bar. We informed the employees that it was our first time visiting and that we felt a bit overwhelmed...and we were greeted with silence and wide, bored eyes in return. No help or suggestions were offered. While looking at the case, I asked if they provided samples and the girl slowly shook her head. I asked for a sample of the corn ice cream, and she literally just dipped one of the tiny spoons in the ice cream instead of giving me an actual bite, so the "sample" was worthless since there wasn't enough on the spoon to even taste. Once we had our treats we stood in the line that others were waiting in to get hot meals, and ended up waiting over 10 minutes to pay. We later found out that we could have paid on the opposite site of the ice cream bar since the line we stood in was technically for hot food, but no one explained that to us even though they all stared at us the entire time we were waiting in line. Weird crew here, but on to the food... I chose a Vanilla Caramel paleta from the freezer case (they all looked freezer burnt and mine had no flavor whatsoever, not even the caramel chunk) and I also had one scoop each of the Pistachio and Corn ice creams. The pistachio was the BEST pistachio ice cream I've ever had: super creamy, flavorful, and FULL of pistachios! The corn was wild and tasty, full of actual little corn niblets, but I probably wouldn't get it again. Great to try once though. My husband had a scoop each of the Butter & Strawberry ice cream and the Coconut. The latter was full of shredded coconut, which he always loves. The butter strawberry was absolutely delicious! Creamy, buttery, with the occasional strawberry chunk thrown in. That and the pistachio are enough to definitely make us go back to Diamonds again in the future for sure. Overall, the clean dine-in space, average prices, and stellar unique ice cream options outweigh the lame service here, so we left feeling pretty pleased and pretty full. read more

I've thought about my visit last Saturday afternoon. I didn't want to review until I really processed my experience. A. I sampled 2 of their ice creams and thought both were good enough B. I ordered a 2 scoop bowl. The first couple of bites were ok with taste and texture. Eggnog and a pine nut with something. C. I got nasty diarrhea and a relentless stomach ache a sorry while later. D. There were 4 in our party that visited. One female went to the restroom and took a picture of fecal matter on the wall. E. The young guy behind the counter that scooped for us said everything was homemade. Probably. F. Large eat-in area. Tables were dirty and trash on floor needed picked up. G. Best coconut ice cream I've ever had! Everything we've tried has been spot on. The passion fruit agua fresca was suuuper yummy and flavorful, the coconut was good too. Staff was very attentive and welcomed you to try any flavor of ice cream you wanted before choosing. The only paleta we tried was the Mango and chili (not spicy but flavorful) and it was fun and different, we look forward to trying more flavors in the future. read more

Wow! What a treat!!! Diamonds Ice Cream has amazing homemade ice cream flavors but the bonus is the popsicles and how beautiful they are. My partner had the mango and strawberry sorbet and I tried the coconut ice cream. However, our child choose the bubble gum popsicle and the color, fragrance and taste stole the show. This place is a must stop!!! I would give a five star but I struggle with gloves not being worn and some of the cleanliness and clutter in the space. We park to be greeted by a huge banner that says "Celebrate their Anniversary 50% off". Not today, but maybe we'll come back. We were greeted very friendly by multiple staff. Everything is clean and shiny, with a splash of purple. We're the only patrons at this 11am time on a Saturday in winter. After announcing this is our first visit, we were invited to sample to our hearts content. There was no eye rolling with each sample. Just a smile and a suggestion of what else we might like. That alone reminded us of Jeni's. Wholly crap, everything is so good. I wish we weren't here for a single scoop. I have now convinced my sweetie that it is cold enough outside that we could also keep 2 Popsicles cold in the very back of the vehicle for later. It was cold outside. A bit soft after running a few more errands. Why didn't we think to put them in the Hot/Cold pizza bag? My regret was that I found out later we got the same flavor of Popsicles. Drat! My friends got the strawberry kiwi (so pretty) and avocado popsicles, and they loved it! They said the flavors tasted very natural. I got the pistachio popsicle, which had a lot of pistachio nuts in it yum! Surprisingly, the milky part had a lot of good, REAL pistachio flavor. I also tried the cactus pear. Didn't love that one, but my friends from Chile really liked it. My friends also told me they make this loco thing where the put pork rinds in a watermelon! They also make these loco pineapples with a ton of fruit skewered into a pineapple as well as yogurt sundaes that looked like fruit drizzled with yogurt and toppings. I grew up in Southern California and visited Mexico every year once or twice and one thing i missed a lot is the authentic Paletas made with different fruits. This place was a little overwhelming in the best way, there are so many options of scoop ice cream, paletas(popsicles), and fresh fruit waters. There were some combinations that I had never seen before and I will need to make 2-3 more trips before I try all the flavors I was interested in. I bought around 15 paletas to take home to my family and less than a week later they are all gone. I have personally tried 2 flavors - one that had raisins and the other one was Pistachio which was so good I need 10 more right now. The prices are a little bit more than what I am used to paying in California but for being the only shop in town and providing a high quality product they can get away with the pricing. I would recommend this place to anyone and I would recommend getting some tacos next door and then ending with dessert here. read more

I went on Sunday, July 19th and the service was poor. I was ignored for a while by two women who walked back and forth in front of me (behind the ice creams), and then about 5 minutes later, one of the women did ask me if I'd made up my mind. She acted irritated. I asked what several flavors were, as some didn't have labels. I chose a dip of something that had berries, cake, and maybe chocolate in it. It was pretty good. However, I developed an intestinal illness 2 days later with fever, chills, body aches, and typical gross stuff and I'm still not quite right. It's the only thing different that I'd eaten in quite a while. I am seeing my doctor about it tomorrow, so maybe I'll report back. Of course I can't be 100% sure I got sick from the ice cream, but I think that's what it was, and since I wasn't treated well, I won't go back. I'll stick with Mardi Gras in Dublin when I want an ethnic ice cream treat. They're super polite there and have such wonderful flavors. read more

Amaze-balls. That's all I gotta say. I've been hearing all this foodie hype about this paleta + ice cream store, but honestly, I was dubious. (1) I'm not a huge dessert fan and (2) Jeni's will always have my heart. But, after trying this out over the weekend, Jeni's still has my heart, but boy, there's some close competition.
