Service is as expected in this cafe style, call over when something is required. Payment cash and debit only, credit card has surcharge. Food 3.5/5 Flavours are generally consistent. Firstly, unless the menu had gone through extensive change over time, some of the reviews on Yelp and Google are disingenuous. The white wine mussels and baked escargot are ONLY "Dinner for Four" options. They do not exist anywhere else. Moving on to my personal review: for the price point of the dish (8oz AAA beef tenderloin) I ordered it fell super short on what I expected as a standard. There's not a damn sprinkle of salt or pepper on these steaks. Just pure beef/steak inherent flavour. The only seasoning is in the sauce but I shouldn't need to be dunking my steak pieces to get seasoning especially as a $50 dish. Vegetables, which I didn't expect to come with my order because the options was "rice, pasta, potato of the day OR vegetables" is straight flavourless, pretty sure just boiled or from frozen. The mashed potatoes at least has flavour and was most likely made in house as there's bacon bits and other goodies within. Ambiance is what you would expect from any 'HK Cafe-esque' on the quiet side but occasionally rowdy based on table and chatter. Service though? The servers aren't the least bit attentive. On a Friday afternoon where half the seating is empty and theres only like 6-7 of us tables total, all the waitresses (4 minimum) are looking down at their various stations. To get any attention we have to stand up to flag them down or walk up to their station as none of them are looking around. Closing thoughts I would not come back here again. Even from the attention of the appetizer which came with the combo, the "garlic bread" was toasted on one side. Not even both sides. It screams lazy and low effort. First time returning to Dickens after many years, and their more western-leaning HK menu hasn't changed much! I always look forward to a hearty cream-based soup whenever it's offered at an HK restaurant, so I was pleased to see that it's a standard offering with most lunch/dinner meals. Service was quick, and the interior felt spacious. Most importantly, the food is as good as I remember it to be. I opted for the curry veal brisket rice, which had a thinner consistency with what I think was a more tomato-based curry. This is unlike other curry briskets I've had in most HK cafes, which lean more like thicker Japanese yellow curry. It's got a mild-medium spice to it that pairs well with rice and potatoes. The cream of corn & ham soup was amazing (honestly I could just eat that alone and be satisfied), and the HK milk tea here leans on the slightly stronger/more tannic side. Even though prices have gone up (as is with most places), I think the price difference between Dickens and other HK cafes doesn't seem as large as it did 5-7 years ago. read more

We came here for a family birthday dinner. It definitely looks bigger inside than from the store front. It was a pretty busy weekend night, most tables were full. Service is organized and prompt. They have these near robots that being good out from the kitchen to the table then the servers take it from the robots to the table. A little bit of fun to see. Dickens is located on apple creek and woodbine in Markham. Definitely one of the well known chinese restaurants since its one of my parents go to restaurants since their previous location. Interior 3/5 - nothing crazy but def nicer than the old location Food came pretty fast after order, they also have robot server, so that was pretty new and fun! Their afternoon tea special is always the time we visit, since their $$ are a bit on the high end comparing to other chinese restaurants. Came here a few months ago for dinner as soon as I heard that they opened a new location. I'm not sure if it's the same owner but they have been around for many years at different locations. The decor here is much more lively compared to their old location at Richlane Mall. This is a Hong Kong Chinese cafe style. The one thing that I always crave for at these type of restaurants is getting the HK style Borscht soup which is usually an option with the set meals. I was a bit disappointed with their borscht soup as it wasn't too flavourful and didn't hit the spot! My husband got the lobster bisque to start and it was also just okay. For my main course, I got the baked tiger prawns with cheese on rice (or spaghetti) . This was delicious. The shrimp was tasty and the sauce was perfect. The only mistake was they baked it with spaghetti instead of rice. They didn't offer to correct it and said if I was okay to just take it. They were extremely busy so I told them to just bring me a bowl of rice which they did so I was okay with that. Overall, we enjoyed our meals and we'll definitely be back. read more

Haven't been here in years, at least not since they moved to their new location on Apple Creek Blvd. Interior is a lot nicer then their last location in Richlane Mall. Menu is 'high end' Hong Kong style diner. They have very familiar HK diner favourites ie baked rice, borscht etc but they also have steak and lamb ($52). Dinner combos come with the standard dinner roll, soup and choice of drink with an upgrade for cold drinks. Some combos come with a salad (house or Caesar). We stuck with a trusted favourite (baked chicken steak with cheese and tomato sauce on rice and a pan fried filet with clam cream sauce on linguine (you can also have it with rice). The soup and roll came first. The bun was not warm enough and the soup was good (at least the first spoonful) but very salty and almost too acidic. When the salad came the citrus poppyseed dressing just added to the over acidity of the first two courses. The mains were okay. Generous portions. They clearly have regulars as many people who came in throughout the time we were there we're very familiar with the staff. Also seems to be a favourite with family get togethers/celebrations/events. 3.5 stars! Dicken's Cafe has been around for a while and in its recent move has upgraded from the Cafe moniker to a full fledged restaurant. There is a current soft opening 10% discount (bill needs to settled by cash). The food is ok. Nothing to knock your socks off. The 2.50 upgrade to French onion soup will be a pass as I found the soup to lack any beefy richness along with the stringy topping of cheese. The main entree was huge for any standards... feeds 2 comfortably or 1 uncomfortably... The flavors were subdued and nothing popped out at you. The tea again was not very rich in tea flavors. Dinner experience, dine in. Very spacious venue, decent customer service. Prices are more on the pricey side if you compare other HK style cafes, but Dickens always had higher pricing. They do have set meals as well, which makes it convenient if you wanted a full meal without having to add the extra $5 for bread, soup and drink. Lobster Bisque 3/5 - this was a bit bland to me. Not enough flavours of lobster or spices. Quite creamy and milky in flavour, with a few pieces of crustacean meat which was cooked well. Borscht Soup 4/5 - this was quite sweet but had the nice tomato flavours that you associate HK cafes with (given they usually make it sweet tomato rather than your tangy/sour one). White wine and cream mussels 4/5 - the addition of cheese in their cream and wine sauce made it quite delicious. It reminded me of the flavours of 'lobster e-fu noodles' that you can get at chinese restaurants long ago. Pairs really nicely with the mussels and it was well cooked. The strips of onion makes it add some texture. Overall enjoyable! Baked cheese tomato porkchop rice 4/5 - if you like the sweet tomato sauce vibes on your porkchop rice HK style, this is for you! Sauce was thick but covers the fried rice nicely. Rice was well cooked and not mushy as many restaurants tend to do sometimes. Porkchop was well seasoned, good amount of fat to meat ratio. Tender and juicy. Really enjoyed. If anything, it can be a tad less sweet but overall I think its a good take on the classic. Curry Beef Brisket 3/5 - there was something in this curry dish that i didnt really like. I couldnt depict what it was, but it was not your typical curry flavours. Otherwise, good amount of meat and did not cheap out. Was quite tender and soft. Also on the fattier side so it can get heavy. Pork Hock with Rice 4/5 - while this dish was mid 20 in price for the meal, it was quite worth it given that the pork hock was massive! Meat was also nice and juicy and tender, fall of the bone. Skin and fat was well rendered, but there was still a lot of meat so you will definitely not leave hungry. The meat itself is relatively bland so definitely add the gravy. Overall good. I did have take out once as well, and the experience was not as nice, probably given the travel time and being in the boxes etc. They do use the microwave safe takeout boxes though, which is a nice take. Table spacing follows Covid-19 restrictions and they take down your contact info before asking for proof of vaccine (+1). Order (Lunch Menu Set): Baked Coconut Chicken with Portuguese Sauce, Borsch Soup, HK Milk Tea. The Borsch was weak and lacked the tomato heartiness and slight spiciness you expect and get from other places. The coconut in the chicken (all dark meat) was subtle but a nice compliment to the Portuguese sauce, which was OK. Dickens is a Hong Kong style café restaurant that has been open in the GTA for many many years. I recall dining at Dickens when it was located at Finch & Midland many years ago. It has since moved to Richmond Hill and most recently to Markham where it occupies a large, more contemporary space at the corner of Apple Creek Boulevard and Woodbine. Hubby and I came on a Saturday evening at around 8:30 PM and the restaurant was nearly full so we opted for takeout. They offer a few takeout specials during their soft opening, including oxtail in red wine gravy, a surf and turf special, and discounts on drinks during afternoon happy hour. What I remember of Dickens is the dine-in experience of having a very well rounded meal including bread and butter, soup, a generously sized entrée, and a drink. Soup options can be upgraded for a small surcharge to clam chowder, French onion soup, or lobster bisque. There are many great dinner entree options on the menu. We opted for the grilled pork chop with honey mustard glaze ($20.99). It came with two generously sized, perfectly grilled pork chops, a tasty mustard sauce and steamed vegetables. The clam chowder, was creamy, flavourful, and chock full of clams. A dinner roll and butter were included with the meal. I had ordered hot HK milk tea as part of my order but unfortunately the staff forgot to include it when they handed us our order. After calling the restaurant after getting home, I returned to pick up the drink, where the staff apologized about the oversight and had two milk teas waiting for me. They only take cash during the soft opening but offered a 10% discount with cash payment. They take reservations which means you may have to wait at least 30+ mins or more sometimes during their busy lunch/dinner times if walking in.. I never heard of a HK cafe take reservations so this was a bit surprising...We ended up waiting 30 minutes but later on, no more wait. They have a Lunch and Dinner menus and their dinner menu is much more expensive starting at $20? The garlic bun listed on their dinner? menu is actually only available during lunch and not for dinner, as explained to me by the waitress, which doesn't make sense and it seemed confusing and not clearly indicated on their menu that this is just for lunch. Also they forgot my buns and the waitress asked the kitchen to bring a replacement but guess what? again, no buns so the waitress had to steal someone else buns and gave it to me .. funny. They also have an afternoon menu but guess what, the portion size are smaller.. Food was just okkkkk. Portion size could be bigger. Very pricey compared to other HK cafes but then I guess they are trying to be a restaurant/hk cafe so that is why their menu is more expensive in the evening. HK Milk tea was weak too. A slightly elevated dining experience in a beautifully decorated restaurant. Dickens is a HK cafe that tries to push to be a more traditional western style dining family restaurant while continuing the tradition of combos and set meals. While a little more pricey, you aren't paying for superior service or a an elevated tasting experience. You are paying for the young and modern decor. The food itself is okay. Pretty good for Hong Kong cafe food, but not necessarily worth the price. The portions are quite large and I suppose you could counter that it's enough food for two meals. I'd say it's comparable to American portions. I'd get a drink with dinner but don't think the meal upgrade is worth it. The set meal came with a cream of mushroom soup, a small bread roll, an escargot appetizer, and a drink. The soup is comparable to your average canned cream of mushroom. The escargot, while a decent flavour becomes dull from the excess of mashed potatoes. After the first bite it isn't much to look forward to. The entrees are good, and pretty much what you would expect. Large portions, nice flavour, a very familiar and comforting taste. Service is basically the same as your average Chinese restaurant. Not that great. Wait staff speak mostly Chinese, so you may have a little difficulty if you don't speak Cantonese. Overall a decent experience. For HK cafe it's good food, but I wouldn't say it's the elevated dining experience that it tries to be. Worth mentioning that there are a lot of more western style dishes, but the price point seems a little high when compared to the other dishes they offer. It seems rather unusual to charge over $40 for a steak, when on the same menu they have baked spaghetti and rice dishes. We came on a Sunday evening for dinner and it was pretty empty. Service was good but honestly, we didn't love this place. Prices are higher than normal HK style cafes but the food is mediocre IMO. Our party of 4 each got one of their dinner specials which came with soup of the day, bread with butter and tea/coffee (add $1.50+ for old or specialty drinks). One of the meals also came with the choice of garden salad or baked escargot but the escargot was nothing special. You can choose rice, pasta or potato/veggies with your entree but beware, the mashed potatoes tasted like they were made from powder. For the price we're paying, I would expect them to make their mashed potatoes from scratch. We got 2 orders of the German pork knuckle, 1 braised oxtail in red wine sauce and 1 braised bacon, shrimp and crab meat in cream sauce with fettuccine. Out of all the meals, I would say the pork knuckle was the most interesting. First of all, it is huge. We appreciated how tender the meat was and how parts of the skin were roasted and crispy - however it lacked seasoning. We wished it came with something other than gravy (I.e, a black pepper sauce would have been nice). The braised oxtail was not bad, but I've definitely tasted better. The sauce was mostly a tomato base rather than red wine, the oxtail could have been braised for longer and not to mention, the pieces were small with very little meat! Don't even bother getting their pasta - I really think they just boiled pasta and threw some sauce on right from the jar. I could make better pasta at home lol. For the premium prices that we paid, the food really just wasn't worth it at all. You can tell there's a lot of things that they cheap out on or things they do just for convenience. I would consider coming back for lunch or afternoon tea when their combos are more reasonably priced. We used to go to the Leslie Richmond Hill location for Dickens. My kids loved having the soup and bread that comes with the meals . We were happy to see Dickens open up at a closer location. It seemed to be much bigger space , there are private rooms if you have big party. The food price is reasonable. I ordered pork pork with salad, added $2 for the soup and garlic bread. It's a large portion for a great price . It also comes with a drink, eg lemon tea, milk tea or coffee. Customer service not bad. I was in the Apple Creek area and noticed the old dim sum place was gone and replaced with Dickens Restaurant. I'm old enough to remember Dickens used to be further up north at Richlane Mall so I wanted to give this new location a try. There were plenty of seats and tables in the restaurant - and great ambience. There is a big photo of the Toronto skyline on the wall. Service was slower than I would've preferred. It took almost an hour in-between ordering my food and getting the main course dish and the restaurant wasn't even busy that day. I ordered the thin cut steak with italian sausage and chicken skewer. The quality was average (nothing fancy) and definitely way overpriced compared to other restaurants that would charge the same price but deliver a higher quality meal. The meal came with a warm bun and I did enjoy the cream soup that I got. Overall, I think it's more on the pricey side and would rather visit another HK style restaurant but I may visit again in the future for lunch when their menu is cheaper. read more

The dinner special includes rolls, a drink and soup of the day. I had the vegetable beef soup which was delicious and sweet. The rolls were fresh and light. I tried Dickens twice the last few months for lunch and dinner. At both times, there are lunch and dinner combos available. The sets includes a soup (Russian borscht or cream option) with garlic bread along with a choice of a hot/cold beverage. For dinner, they include the same items but the set also includes baked escargot. During the lunch hour, we tried the baked chicken with rice and the pan fried pork chop with spaghetti. Both dishes were made quite well and were delicious! The portions were generous as my friend and I did have a decent amount of leftovers. The baked rice was quite cheesy and tasty! Each item was about $15.99 and $16.99. The last time I went was for dinner on a weekday night. We did have a late dinner which was past 8pm but the restaurant was actually quite busy. There were various parties that still came in for dinner at this time. To my surprise, the dinner menu was a bit pricey for HK food. My baked pork chop with tomato and cream sauce was $25 but it did come with the cheesy escargot as an appetizer. The hubs ordered from the menu directly which still came up to $18.99 (from what I recall). We upgraded his order to a combo and was an extra $5 to $6 which essentially was almost the same price as my dinner set but without the escargot. He had the baked chicken with cream spinach sauce. For some reason his cream sauce was rather salty while my cream sauce was fine. The portion and quality were still good though . Overall the food was tasty and portion sizes are good and we did enjoy our experience. The interior is new and modern which makes it quite comfortable. Decor: 5/5 This location is extremely spacious and well lit - almost the complete opposite of their previous location. They have stylish modern style fabric chairs - the type you'd typically see at a trendier cafe and not at a HK cafe. They also have private rooms in the back that are probably used for groups, but was used for overflow seating when their main dining area was full. Food: 4/5 Like most HK cafes, their lunch menu comes in combos that include garlic bread, soup and tea/coffee. This makes it a great value option for lunch! Like most HK cafes, you can choose between a cream soup or a borscht/minestrone soup for free, but you also have the option to pay extra to upgrade to other soups on their menu (I think french onion was one of the options, and maybe clam chowder?). You can also pay $1.25 to upgrade your tea/coffee to an iced HK milk tea. Taste wise, it's fairly standard for a HK cafe - pretty average imo. The portions are huge, compared to its next door neighbour, Woodstone Eatery. As a female, I could only finish half of my pasta, but my guy friends just managed to finish their meal. Service: 4/5 They follow strict covid guidelines here. They check vaccine receipts, take your temperature, and do contact tracing. Their servers were friendly when we arrived, and one even noticed that there was something in our water and replaced it for us. Moved to new location back in early October and has become the new place in town. More seating, more spacious. They now have party room which can communicate large group up to 20. Dickens restaurant used to be at midland and finch years ago! Not sure if it's the same owner but this was literally my go to restaurant when I was a kid. They're famous for their escargot and the fusion between hong Kong cafe and western food done right! Coming here is definitely nostalgic for me and my mom. Dropping the rating down, still love the dishes but the prices have gone up a bit too high, considering the portions have also gone down. Still one of my fav HK cafes but definitely less impressive for first time diners. read more

Curry chicken rice is quite tasty and I love their cream soup, ambience is suitable for chatting with friends, not noises. Service is OK .

New location same great food at least for take out great taste and portions soup, drink and garlic bread served with lunch special better be hungry, have yet to have a sit down experience but looking at the posts looks nice and spacious. Dickens Restaurant, recently rebranded from their previous location at leslie/16th, no longer cafe but restaurant! Located at the apple creek and Woodbine plaza. Their new location is super spacious and comfortable, with strict protocols upon entry that follows the guidelines of covid prevention. Food wise, MASSIVE portions!!! Most times I couldn't finish a single casserole dish in one sitting! What I enjoy is also the soup that comes with the meals (I'm a huge cream soup fan) , sometimes they have pumpkin cream, sometimes it's cream of corn, it's been different time to time! Staff are super friendly and attentive! Definitely worth a try! read more

Disappointed compare to the old Dickens years ago, it won't even get a 2 stars. Service is very good, waitress friendly & nice & patience to explain menu. Food is not well thought. Escargot on top of mesh potato! they are from can so no taste, require butter & garlie & herbs to favor it. so combo with mesh is wrong, lack food sense. Wife ordered pasta with bacon, crab and shrimp. 2 pieces of whole bacon on top! chef forgot to put crab in and shrimp are those small tiny salad shrimp, for $36! My chicken ok but nothing special i can get that under $20 in other places. French onion soup the bread is too sweet and cheese should use mozzarella instead of cheddar. read more
