Ok, for all the newbies, the key is to read the menu. You get exactly what it says on the sign, nothing more, nothing less. Don't want tartar sauce on your Deluxe? Order a different burger or go to Kidd Valley, they'll build one to order. Do not be afraid of the fries, they're supposed to look like that. Maybe you should just close your eyes and taste them. Grew up around Seattle so know Dick's very well. My regular order is a special, fries, tartar and a chocolate shake. This is my comfort food and reminds me of when I was young and lived a simple life. The relish they use on the special is my favorite, and the fries are hand cut with the skin's still on. Hand scooped ice cream shakes that are so thick your cheeks get a real workout just sucking the shake up the straw. Love being outside with all the other crazies ordering in any kind of weather. Funny to watch the many different people that come here, from construction workers to business suits, to women in evening attire. Just a great mix of Seattle! A DICK'S DELUXE, FRIES, and a ROOTBEER FLOAT is the GREATEST meal one could imagine! The DELUXE is the ONLY burger to have--with their two pattys, sauces & cheese; their greasy--but Tasty FRIES (-I tend to place most of the fries in the middle of the burger and have a side of tarter sauce with the rest!); and their ROOT BEER FLOAT...it is a WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE!!! I must give special attention to their ROOTBEER FLOATS, as the folks at Dick's do. First, they put the Rootbeer in the cup. Next, they HAND SCOOP a nice BIG serving of Vanilla Ice Cream on top of it. It is a sight to behold! However, there is an ART to enjoying this creation: You must SLOWLY and GENTLY insert the straw into the Rootbeer, CAREFUL not to disturb the Ice Cream too much. Otherwise, you will find yourself with a HUGE FROOTHY MESS erupting from your cup!!! (-not that it is a bad thing...you just have to gulp down the ROOTBEER FLOAT faster than you may want to!!!) Yet, no matter how messy it is...it's ALWAYS GOOD!!! The menu is simple...and there are NO "Special Orders". If you don't want pickles, YOU have to take them out. Hold the ketchup? Well...THAT is a challenge! They seem to have a "Take It or Leave It" rule, yet that has not stopped MILLIONS from enjoying them! Before all you Seattle locals jump on me for my two star rating of this classic burger joint, know that I am from SoCal (Southern California) so my review may be a little biased. What Dick's is to Seattle is what In-N-Out is to SoCal. Pretty much the same set up: Both have been around for years and are staple for cheap post club eating. Here's the things about Dick's that I didn't like: The fries and the fact that they don't do special orders. I came here with my Seattle friend who raved about this place. I was more than open to give it a try. Unfortunately, I didn't. I ordered the cheeseburger and requested no mustard and grilled onions. I was quickly told that they don't do that. I was pissed because I don't eat mustard on my burgers and didn't want to pay for it so I decided not to order anything. My friend let me try the fries and I wasn't impressed. They were a little soggy for me. Plus they charge 0.5 cents for condiments and onions. Small charge but still, damn. Not being from here, I didn't know about how to order at Dick's but I do now. I'm sure that someone from Seattle who came to In-N-Out would feel the same way I did as a mustard lover would hate In-N-Out because they don't serve mustard but their burgers come with their secret sauce ( a blend of thousand island dressing). Dick's is a delicious Seattle staple, and I don't care what Californian haters have to say. It's cheap, yummy, and quick. Sure, you can't customize your burger, but that's what allows the quickness. I've lived in Seattle for a year and after hearing good things about Dicks, I finally tried it yesterday. It wasn't horrible, but I don't think it deserves the raves that everyone is giving it. For me, it suffers the same fate as the movie Titanic. I heard so much about it, when I finally saw it, I thought, "Seriously? This is what you think is so great?" Dicks was the same. Going to Dick's is like getting in to a time machine bound for the 50's. Most locations retain this look and feel of a 50's style drive-in. Are you looking for an extensive menu? Look elsewhere, there are like 4 items on the menu. But how many different ways do you really need to dress up a hamburger? Besides, more variety would end up derailing their assembly line. I love Dick's because I was born and raised in Seattle, but when I try to see the chain objectively, I just can't get the hype. The fries are downright gross - soggy with cooking oil, squished into a paper bag and either undersalted or oversalted. I like my fries crisp and golden, not soggy and mushy brown. The milkshakes are good for the price - you get what you pay for - but nothing special. And the burgers...well, at one point I would've endorsed them, but with Dicks' prices on everything steadily climbing and quality/portion size not increasing, I can't say the burgers are worth it. I have gotten too many undercooked beef patties from Dick's to be tempted by their prices again. Product aside, this particular location has fast and friendly service, and the cashiers always check $20 bills for fakes by holding them up to the light and scanning them. I love the fact that I don't have to pay for someone else's ketchup! I also love that I don't have to wait for some idiot ordering a custom burger. Keep that line moving! The staff are well trained, hard working, fairly compensated, and speak English very well. Even the minorities. The only reason I give it 4 stars and not 5 is because there's a 50/50 chance I'll get soggy French fries. They need to work harder on putting out quality fries consistently. If you ask a Dick's employee for a tomato, he or she will think you are speaking a foreign language. 3. While on Dick's premises, you will never hear the words, "is this for here?" or "are you dining in?" 4. Tartar sauce is not just for fish (this is the 2nd time I've seen tartar sauce on a burger since arriving in town. I'm convinced this is a Seattle thing, but further scientific research is underway). 5. No, you didn't get a bad batch. The fries are always that soggy. If you're still reading despite these facts, then maybe Dick's is for you. With a relish based (tartar) sauce, chopped lettuce, and optional diced onions, these burgers seem like distant cousins of the Big Mac. You will find larger and more robust burgers with fancier ingredients at other places, but Dick's does their simple formula well. With prices that are dirt cheap by comparison and some decent chocolate shakes, Dick's fills a nice (albeit unglamorous) niche. Lake City Dick's is the one I frequent most. Though lately I have been really trying to avaoid the place. Must stop eating delicious, warm, comfort food burgers. They really are the best after a night of drinking. And what's hilarious is that even out in Lake City (and I've encountered it at the Crown Hill location also) you run into those total strangers that you just saw at the heavy metal concert about an hour ago and you both wave and smile knowingly at each other as you take your food back to your car. Good, inexpensive food. The fries can be hit and miss sometimes, but I always love the Deluxe or the cheeseburger. Consistent. For those complaining about paying $.05 for ketchup--get over it. It's much more efficient than getting 10 packets tossed into your bag at a drive-thru, only to have most of the 'free' packets unused and then thrown away. (You think McD's gives away free ketchup? They add in those thrown out packets to the price of the burgers and fries whether you use ketchup or not.) And to someone's comment of "beef burgers saturated-fat-laden and grayish in color", take off your sunglasses and you'll see that Dick's beef is never frozen shoulder chuck--a much higher-quality and tastier beef than those other fast food places' frozen patties. read more

Dicks is a Seattle institution! Having been born and raised in Seattle there was many a night you'd hear me say, "Deluxe, fries and a vanilla shake". In the old days the cashiers didn't have "high tech" registers so they'd actually make change (a rarity these days). If you've never eaten at Dicks I've got 2 words for you, greasy goodness. The food is cheap, but so good! I don't know what it is that makes you want more and more, but I love it! Perfect 1:00 am, post bar hopping spot. ***This is my 100th review!*** It's nice to live in between two Dick's. This is our preferred because it's usually not crowded when we go. And there's a Wendy's on the way. Um, yes. We (me, that is) have been known to stop off at Wendy's for a frosty or chicken nuggets in addition to our ultimate destination. We have our trips down to a science. Cash is always ready and we are not cash people. We always somehow can scrape together enough money for our order. We have paid in coins before..they were mostly quarters at least! The location could be easy to miss because the Dick's isn't on the main Lake City Way, but it's to your left (heading north on Lake City) before you enter that block with the 2 strip malls on both sides. I'm sure you can find it if you pay attention. ;) Parking is plentiful. There are usually 1-2 cops on duty which is nice (The Dick's beat? Must be pretty cool, but what do I know). We're in and we're out. Bang bang! My order? 2 cheese, 3 tartar, and 1 fry. If I'm feeling extra nice, I might swap a cheese for a special. If I want dessert, add a strawberry shake. Their ice cream is quite good too. They have pink peppermint! We rush home, and I get crackin'...open burger, lay a row of fries in the center, spread most of 1 tartar on the bun and EATnomLOVE. We don't go as often as we used to, but that only makes me appreciate it so much more. It is my perfect bliss. read more

I love grease. Sick, I know. Bags marked with lovely translucent spots are a way to my heart, and not just because it clogs up those arteries :). Dick's is a Seattle staple and I just couldn't favor In-N-Out over them without feeling like a complete traitor to my hometown. But even if I were a complete foreigner visiting the Northwest for the first time and were in search for the perfect burger spot, Dick's would be the way to go. Cheap, greasy, and tasty are my requirements. I guess I'm not too hard to please. Their fries are nothing short of incredible. They're thin cut and softer than usual fries, which is how I like them. I only get their Deluxe and I think it's perfectly proportioned with 2 patties, cheese, lettuce and tartar between 2 buns. Their burgers are cooked perfectly and seasoned just right. They don't add onions to their burgers but I think you can buy a cup for only 5c. Their shakes are pretty good, but I'm not much of a shake girl. Service is fast and after eating my usual fare, I've had my Dick's fix for at least a couple of months before I start craving again. P.S. My friend from Seattle loves In n out so she suggested that I try this place since it's similar in style. The menu is pretty similar, straightforward with just a few options. I don't think there is any covered seating which confuses me a little since I can imagine people getting pretty cold so we just ate in the car. The burger and shake were okay, the fries were yummy! I could careless about in n out fries but it's difficult to top their burgers. I liked our cashier, she was funny. It was Halloween weekend so people were out in costumes. So I've been going to dicks hamburgers since I was a litle kid, so I might be a little biased, but to this day I still think it's the best fast food burger I've ever had. I prefer it over in and out. Everytime I come home from LA I go everyday. There's an internal clock that reminds me everytime I'm at a bar those goes off at 145 that it's time for the dicks run. What really makes it I think is the quality of the meat in the burger and that special sauce that is some type of tarter/relish like concoction. The deluxe is two patties, the sauce, ketchup, mustard, and cheese. The special is the same but just one patty and no cheese. I've offered them heaps of money before trying to get cheese on a special, but there is a strict no altering policy. The cheeseburgers are also mysteriously addicting. I have a hard time pinpointing what it is, but they are superior to any other simple fast food cheeseburger. The fries are also to die for, which have an amazing texture and is made with the skin of the potatoe. The food is all made visable from the window, and because of the fast turnaround, it always taste fresh. Wait time once you order is also unbeatable. Dicks is a must visit when your in Seattle. It's a local treasure that could meret weekly visits if I had a private jet at my disposal. read more
