Burgers are fried on a flat grill prior to your arrival, "...cheese boyger cheese boyger cheese boyger, no Pepsi, Coke!" (SNL, 1970's). Seattle tradition? Sort of. Its been around a long time, if thats your definition of "tradition" then yes its a tradition. In reality, its a tradition in the same way that succumbing to a really bad head cold every winter because you live in cold, damp Seattle is a tradition. Despite my best efforts to avoid the place, I find myself eating at Dick's every eight months or so. Unfortunate social forces combine. Some fool in the group gets a stupid look on his/her face, and within minutes, I find myself hurtling out of control into the fast food abyss known as Dick's After Dark. I'll go in believing that just maybe, this time it will be better. But my hopes are consistently crushed like a bug under the weight of a heavy army boot. On a warm summer night, can you spot some cool cars? Often. And that's where the good times end. The beef in the burgers is saturated-fat-laden and grayish in color. Take a gander at the meat in a Dick's burger (if you dare order one) it clearly has the look of a machine-compressed, meat packing plant patty. You have to pay more than double the entry model base price to get a burger that actually has lettuce, cheeze, ketchup, mustard, relish, etc on it. And trust me, you'll want all that on there to hide the taste of the quote unquote beef. In the end, an okay meal (at least in terms of quantity) comes in for around $5, not bad, but hardly a screaming deal. If you have your wits about you, stick to ordering a shake. That's the one thing the staff seems to know how to make well. There is no public restroom at the Lake City location - seriously, your a restaurant and you have no public toilet? Yeah, I can understand it would be an awful job to clean it after the 130am crowd is done with it, but I don't accept this as an excuse. What am I supposed to do after chugging a 20oz coke? Dick's could do what some grocery stores do with their public toilets to prevent trouble - lock them after 10pm. Funny sidenote ... many customers born in the 1970s and later (the majority of the late night clientele) refer to liking the 1950s nostalgia of the place. "It's just like the 50s" - you know that, how? I know burger joints are not about fine food, but think about the fact that 90%+ of the positive reviews include mention of being drunk/stoned. This was a great place to pull over, get out of the car, and order a fine, quick meal. There are a ton of these around Seattle, so be sure to stop by and try it. I have a mild allergy, which makes me have to be vigilant of what's in my food. I grew up going to this Dick's location, so it has a soft spot in my heart. My dad liked to take me here for lunches on sunny summer days and I LOVED it. I still love it. I love it for the nostalgia and I love it for the food. Yes, I love the food at Dick's. A lot of people don't, but it's probably my favorite fast food place on the planet. This is a tough to review kind of place! I've had people hype it up-and there by ruin it. Kinda like in n out was for me in Cali. I didn't give it a fair chance at first because of the expectations I had built up, and I would hate to see that happen with this place. Dick's burgers is a Seattle tradition but is most certainly not the best burger that you've ever had...or even the best burger that you had really cheap. It's fast it's consistent and it's inexpensive. You can walk into Dick's at anytime and order any amount of burgers-and have them in under 30 seconds and all exactly alike! Great for large groups or singular drunk people. What they won't do is add any toppings customize anything or make any alterations at all. You can get chopped onions on the side but I found that they are really weak and have no smell-not sure but they're really old or have been soaked in water. My son just moved to Seattle from Calif. The homeowner he's renting an in-law unit from recommended we try Dick's. I had never heard of it, but I haven't visited Seattle in over 25 years so what do I know. We went on a Friday at 8 pm after unloading all the stuff and we wanted something fast. Dick's was the right place to go to. It's definitely a blast from the past. Like those drive-in's in the 50's & 60's except no waitresses to come to your car to take your order. You order at the window. Man, I couldn't believe the prices! Cheap! But when the hamburgers came I could see why...they are pretty small. My son would need to eat about 4-5 of them to fill him up. I must say that the chocolate shake is a great deal for $2.15 and it's tastes divine! The hamburgers were ok, nothing to write home about and the french fries were tasty, not soggy at all. My son wanted just the hamburger with a side of onions and lettuce. Can't do lettuce said the young lady taking our order, but he can have the onions for a nickel. Ok... For a quick, cheap meal this is the place to go to. I guess it's an institution in Seattle. My first apartment was right behind this Dick's. Yep. It was hard to walk home and the first 15 minutes or so in my apartment were always difficult... on hot days, the aroma of warm fry grease would sift into our apartment via the open balcony door and made it nearly impossible to resist. The number of times I scrounged up all the change in my living room and snuck through the hole in the fence to get a peppermint hot fudge sundae with a side of fries [for dipping of course!] at 1am is definitely in the 50+ range, and we only had a 6 month lease. A deluxe and a peppermint cone is totally the epitome of my childhood summers. Growing up on 32nd and 120th [just a few blocks away] the oldest children would take the youngest ones to Dick's as a field trip for ice cream cones after a hard fought water fight, or we'd spend our lemonade stand money on three or four orders of fries to share amongst the ten of us neighborhood kids. Or in high school, when we all watched in horror and amusement as my friend bought $.75 worth of onions and ate them with nothing else. Everything about it. The building, the crew, the burgers, the fries. Are they the best I've ever had? Nope. But Dick's can't be judged in comparison to other burger joints. This place is a 65 year old tradition. That's all you need to know. I've read some reviews that say the fries aren't as good as they used to be since they changed the recipe or whatever, but they are Dick's Drive-In fries, greasy and thin. I love them. The burgers are......ya know what, it's not even necessary to go into the review of the food. I'd rather have one of their Deluxe Burgers than a burger at some high class joint where I can get Kobi Beef and I have to choose between an Hawaiian Burger, Southwest Burger, Barbecue Burger, blah, blah, blah.
