Americans tend to eat with our eyes, which is overall a mistake. Dick's are worth at least one Michelin star. Fries also look distorted and writhey like a cartoon torture victim. I like Dick's. The burgers are basic, simple, and tasty. It's not something you can have all the time and sometimes the fries are just a little too greasy but I really like just the cheeseburger or the Dick's Deluxe. The shakes are simple and good. Employees are always very friendly and you can get food for a crowd and not break the bank! The owners are very active in the community, which I think is great. I live in San Diego and also rate In-N-Out with 5 stars but if you had one burger at your final meal you would choose the Dick's Deluxe and fries over the double double. I have eaten here over 100 times and never had a bad meal. The fries also last over an hour unlike some other places. read more

Wasn't impressed with this Seattle "staple". I was really looking forward to trying their burgers and fries on a casual Sunday afternoon, but was quickly let down. I went to order the Dick's Deluxe burger, but found out no modifications could be made (add/remove condiments) to the burgers since they are all prepared ahead of time to ensure "speedy service". Also, any additional condiments you desire are charged for ($0.05). Don't waste your money on the fries. Definitely not worth it. Staff usually seem like they're working on an ever-flowing assembly line and they can't wait for the shift bell to ring so they can get the hell out of Dodge, but you know, that's part of the appeal. You won't get a burger quicker, because Dick's doesn't cater to your wants in a burger, you take what Dick's gives you, or you freaking go somewhere else! No special orders here. You order the Deluxe and you don't like lettuce? Stuff it. You eat the lettuce and shut your mouth. I have to -1 for the fact that they only take cash, and I can never seem to carry cash, so going here often times requires an extra stop to get cash somewhere else, which usually turns me off to stopping at Dick's. This is by far my most favorite location. It's in Ballard, and that is where I am from, my roots are there, and though I have been away and my family is no longer based there it's like coming home. The air there smells so familiar, the sounds of the neighborhood are comforting, and the pavement beneath my feet feels like a part of me. Summer nights are always pretty busy, sometimes rudely interrupted by teenagers and young drunk people looking to get their munchie fix, but on a rainy dark October night around 10:15, like tonight, it was pretty dead. And dude at the window totally made fresh fries just for me. Oh man, they are incredible when scalding hot. It's not always the best, but even at its worst, it's still pretty good. I have monthly meetings in this area for a group I volunteer with. I'm not gonna lie, after a long day of work, these meetings aren't always what I look forward to. However, I always make sure I turn my frown upside down by getting some Dick's burgers! This place delivers the usual Dick's experience and food. Consistency is always welcome. However, they are also consistently slow. I'm not sure what's up with that. Even when there's not that many people, I find myself getting impatient waiting for my simple order of a Deluxe, a cheeseburger, and fries. I still really enjoy the food here, but I just wish it was a little faster service. As with all Dick's, this place is cash only. There is an ATM if you don't have any with you. Coming from California, dick's was described to me as "the in-n-out of seattle". Oh, how wrong you are, you silly seattle people. No doubt the burgers are good, never frozen, simple menu, very fast service... This is definitely sounding like in-n-out so far..... Until you try the burger. That is where any similarities end. Look, I love Dick's (cue jokes here). It is my absolute favorite fast food place and one of the few places I actually eat a beef burger. My last meal on earth would likely be a cheeseburger, fries, and a strawberry shake from Dick's - that's how much I love this place. HOWEVER...this location is not as good as others I've been to. In fact, it's a pretty big letdown. Every single time I've been to this location, I've had to wait a very long time in line, as I watch three, maybe four, employees run around with their heads cut off trying to complete orders. It seems like there are never enough employees to match the number of customers. Hire a couple more people, please! The fries never have enough salt! I watch them shake the salt shaker over the fries for about two seconds...and that's it. The result is still good fries, but ones that really could use more salt. Also, the fries are never warm enough! Last night, I watched one of the employees make several new batches of fries. I was lucky enough to get one of the new things of fries...but somehow they were still lukewarm! Last time I was at this location, on my birthday in January, the fries were again lukewarm. It's so hard to have this happen because I love the food at Dick's and would eat here first over any other fast food burger joint. I came here to buy burgers for the dog and fries for myself. Nothing out of the ordinary, just a cheap place to get the dog some burgers. While standing in line I noticed that there was a help wanted sign up and Dick's offered the following benefits to their employees: 1. $9.00 an hour. (not alot, but still a little more then minimum wadge.) 2. Full paid benefits for full time employees. (Crap.. even I have to pay for part of my medical...) 3. 2,500 to 5,000 a year for school/child care. (That's US dollars boys and girls...) There were some other things that I missed, but for a local fast food joint they seemed to be attempting to do whats right. The pay could be more, but the other two benefits sure beat what I get at work. SO.. I am the kind of guy that would rather wait for good food than get crappy food really fast. I have to give them props on speed, I don't think the whole transaction took 15 seconds. She took my money, spun around grabbed a "deluxe" threw it in a bag handed it through the window. The result when I got to my car 15 ft away was a barely warm nothing special burger. Someone noticed I didn't have Dick's on my burgerquest list. I thought about making a joke like, well, that's because I am a dyke but decided not to do that. I can only eat one burger at Dick's and that is the cheeseburger. The rest of the burgers make me ill for some reason. But, I do like the cheeseburger sometimes. It is pretty greasy though. To the people complaining about not being able to customize their order : don't be dense please. If they customize your order, then they'll be obligated to customize everyone else's too. For everyone else this triples the wait time, increases the prices, etc. Why should Dicks water down their service for everyone else just so you can have your special little burger without mustard? After getting to Seattle late at night from CT, we were starving and looking for something open late night that wasn't a sit down place. Luckily for Seattleite's waistlines, there are not a lot of McDonalds, Burger Kings, etc, but at 11:45pm after hours of flying, we were really looking for some fast food. After driving around and checking Yelp, we found Dicks! This is an excellent late night (or any time of night) spot to grab a burger, fries and a shake! For us, it really hit the spot. They were open late night, food was just what we needed, affordable and we got everything pretty quickly. The cool part? The place looks like it came right out of a 50's photo book! Living between this location and the one on Lake City (my #100 review) is awesome! If one location is busy, head to the other one..they are within very few miles of each other. We head to this location if we 1) want to rent a movie at Blockbuster (but it's closing in Aug 09, so yah), 2) visit my sister's family, 3) want to supplement our purchases with a QFC stop. I personally like the appearance of this location compared to the one on Lake City. It's less sketchy, more residential. The wait isn't too bad, unless it's after a Sounders game or something. Parking is plentiful and they are quick to open more windows for ordering when the line gets 4 people deep. Bring your cash, as if I have to remind you! read more

This is no Tommy Burger, this is no In & Out burger, this is Seattle... This is old-skool, Seattle-style burgers. They have what? 4 choices? 1 size of fries and still hand scoop the ice cream for your milk shake. No glittery high fly'n, sing a song for a tip, mega-chain here, just a plain old fried burger. Burgers are fried on a flat grill prior to your arrival, "...cheese boyger cheese boyger cheese boyger, no Pepsi, Coke!" (SNL, 1970's). Fries are limp, YES limp, soggy more often than not, greasy bits of goodness. Shakes come in 1 size and what 3 flavors? Choc, Van, & Straw. They are fast, fire up and serve a quality product and are untouched by time. Truly cheap eats.... Some locations have seating, i.e. Queen Anne, most are counter service only and you then eat in your car and leave greasy trails on your pants for the lack of a decent napkin. read more
