Dick's, Ivar's, these are Seattle institutions. Yes, there are other good burger places here in the Emerald City, Red Mill comes to mind. But, this is the local place that could and kept on ticking. The burgers at Dick's are tasty and the french fries, are well, interesting. That's why the sell the tartar sauce. LOL This was our local place when we lived here. I am a lifelong eater of Dick's. I understand that there are basically two kinds of people in Seattle: those that do not care for Dick's and those that love Dick's. Well I love Dick's. And no, I do not have to be drunk to crave Dick's, though a certain level of inebriation does increase my desire. Why is my Dick's better than your Dick's? Best to enjoy Dick's inside, I say. Lisa V. kindly recommended Dick's when I asked her about food places in Seattle. It was a great recommendation. I devoured the fries here ($1.40): they have the skin on and are salty and soft. The burgers here are good, I prefer the Deluxe over the Special. The Deluxe has cheese and two patties, the special has one patty and no cheese. They have a chopped pickle and mayonnaise spread on the buns, I liked that. The strawberry milkshake I tried was delicious. Tom T and I were rung up and helped quickly. Reading poor reviews of Dick's, mostly by visitors from out of state, kills me. Dick's is a Seattle staple, it's etched into the city's veins. It ISN'T In-N-Out nor is it even remotely "like" In-N-Out. It's Dick's. To those who make the comparison, just don't. It's dangerous and unnecessary to even make that comparison. The thing about the Queen Anne location is that it has a covered dining area (not just covered but an actual dining area!). Lines can get long but moves very quickly. Dick's is CASH only but they conveniently do have an ATM in front of the bathrooms. Past a certain time, there are police officers stationed at Dick's and the place is open until 2am. When you come near closing, it's often hard to get what you came for because they just stop making food at a certain hour. They only have four types of burgers but the two that I always go for are the Deluxe (2 patties, lettuce, and cheese with other condiments for $2.40) which comes in copper foil or the Special (1 patty, lettuce; and condiments for $1.70). I typically get a special, medium Coke, fries and ketchup for $6.30. They charge for ketchup and other extra condiments for $0.05. It's important to note that they also don't do any substitutions which makes sense considering how busy they are. Their shakes are good but I personally find them too filling with a meal. I'm not a big portion Eater but my friends are and they always order more than one burger. They also serve ice cream. People who don't know Dick's or understand Dick's presence in the city might call their fries "limp" but that's the way they are made. If you want something crispy, go to McDonald's. You're at Dick's for heavens sake. This isn't just a place where you come to after a drunken date with the city or just a place to come cure a hangover. It's a place enjoyed by most (can't say all considering the plethora of poor reviews from transplants or visitors who think this place is "like In-N-Out." Absolutely baffling.) at any time of the day. My favorite part about Dick's, however, are the higher than minimum wage wages and the way they really take care of their employees. This location isn't perfect though. I often find the employees rude at times which can't even be justified by how busy they are. But they get 5 stars for having indoor dining and a classic Seattle meal that can't be intimidated by anyone else. read more

Dare I say it, I find Dicks to be charming. Make sure to ask for ketchup and any other condiments before you finish placing your order as they are all extra, however each condiment will only set you back a nickel, so treat yourself! Dick's is the ultimate people- watching location. You will see all sorts of things here. Don't ask for substitutes, your food will come as it is, they will not make special things for you. I may get in trouble for this, but I think their fries are better than In N Out's! Their burgers are really hit or miss depending on which one you get and how long it's been waiting for you to arrive and sweep it off its feet. The counter girl gave me 1 I said I needed a little more she added 2 more in these little dispenser there are 2 reg packets of ketchup, yeah i like my ketchup thats why i ordered 2 greasy fries. My friend described Dick's as "the poor man's In-n-Out burger." Yup, that pretty much sums it up. I've gotten the impression from Seattle friends that Dick's is a Seattle institution for late night sliders. So I was eager to give it a shot when we arrived in town late and were hungry. The simple menu and layout of the place are appealing. Dick's uses the tried and true strategy from 24-hour Krispy Kreme: rent-a-cops at the door and 16 year olds at the counter. We definitely felt like old fogies at 12am. Despite the awesome price, the burgers sucked. McDonald's tastes better. Perhaps I was missing out because I wasn't stoned or drunk. I also didn't like the 14 year old's attitude when I tried to get my vegetarian friend a cheeseburger sans meat patty. He said some bullsh** line like, "Our customer service policy does not include made to order burgers." WTF?? Why don't you just forget the meat when you're making my burger... kinda like how you forgot my fries with my order. And get some freakin' veggie patties already, it's not the fifties anymore. Before I start ranting about the ridiculous way the menu is set up, the food (which is the only thing I base my rating on) is one star above a McDonalds big mac. Their burgers are maybe slightly better than a big mac and a couple of bucks cheaper, so this gets one star higher than that, which is a 2 for me. Now, back to the rant. This was probably the most frustrating ordering experience I've ever had. I guess maybe I'm spoiled by literally every other burger chain out there, but dicks has a rigid menu that does not really offer any customization, and the menu itself doesnt cover even simple cases that many people would probably want. Your options are basically a plain hamburger, a plain cheeseburger, a hamburger with veggies, or a double cheeseburger with veggies. I wanted a single cheeseburger with veggies which honestly should be on the menu, but apparently they didnt have it so I was forced to go with the hamburger with veggies. Condiments are sold separately so you have to pay a nickel for a small container of ketchup, mustard, or mayo. While I get the business appeal for being able to streamline burgers and only make 4 different types, the customer pays, and not getting special orders seems ridiculous in this day and age for a burger place. I would understand if this place was cheaper than in n out, but their deluxe is more expensive than a double double, so I see literally no consumer benefits apart from a short line. Remember, they only take cash but if you forgot, they have an ATM near the bathrooms. The prices are super cheap but this area can get a bit crazy. While we waited in line there was a panhandler inside asking for money and a group of people who were high as a kite freaking out. Other than the band of crazy characters, the food is exceptional. they keep it simple but the taste is nothing short of simple. The patty was moist but their fries were lacking. It was soggy and super brown in color. It just looked like it was sitting there for awhile. I did not see any freshness although they claim their fries are fresh. Also I don't see the appeal in the tartar sauce. I love tartar sauce but this one was just not that great and it didn't really go with anything but my boyfriend thought the tartar sauce and the burger were a match made in heaven. The burgers are not that great. Unless you like your burgers dry and overcooked. Paying extra for ketchup and onions also seems absurd to me. But whatever, even with those extra toppings on my burger, it left me wishing for more. The fries are also not my favorite. If you like your fries super soggy, then these are perfect for you. Dicks is a great burger joint. Simple as that. A simple burger, good fries and amazing shakes. Since I was introduced to Dicks a few years ago, I now make sure it is a must go to stop when visiting Seattle. I always look forward to stopping there. Pros- Seating at this location. Others have standing only room. This Dicks has a full sit down lobby. Real 100% beef, (albeit pre-made burgers) never frozen. Potatoes hand cut daily for the fries. Shakes individually whipped when ordered. Old school shakes are hard to come by now. Price is super cheap considering what most other places charge for a burger. Cons- No substitutions. For picky eaters this can be a problem. The burgers are pre-made, so there are no changes. Ketchup will also cost you $0.05 Cash only (There is an ATM on site, but still.....) Although there are police on patrol as security at night in the restaurant, they don't do anything about the homeless guys outside the entrance asking for money. read more

Great place for cheap delicious burgers! We came here one night around 10 and they were really busy. It's super fast paced so you don't have to wait a long time for your food. This is definitely the place to go to when you are starving and need something fast. The only downside was that it was not as clean as it should've been.
