I got takeout from Diego's the other day and was absolutely delighted with the experience. I got an assortment of tasty things, including pupusas and anticuchos. Everything was delicious, and when I went to pick it up and pay it was super easy and fast. I think next time I might try their online ordering system for even more easy/fastness. I also appreciate the packaging they use - walking home with my takeout it really felt like a special treat because the bags they use are the fancy kind with the sort of twine-like handles. I love Diegos. From it's fun decorations to it's exceptional food it is a definite "go to" restaurant for us. I would have given it 4.5 stars if I could. The only complaint is that the space is very crowded and loud. In some ways that adds to the fun ambiance, but I find it a little annoying. If you like Brazilian food, this is a must. read more

We were part of a group of 15 guests who reserved to private, over the top, rear dining room. Wow, what fun! The funky decor looked like something from a movie set on a sugar high. It set the stage for a lively get together! The food, based on South American /Mexican cuisine was delicious! All 3 of us like our dishes very much. The service was pretty good although not once did the server come back and ask us how we liked our meals. When a server does so that gives the customer time to ask for more water, drinks, condiments and so forth. I was hoping for something spicier to add to my dish like a salsa or something to kick it up a notch or two. Another at our table wanted some more of the green bread dipping sauce/chimichurri or whatever that good dipping sauce is. I understand it's a difficult job being a server, but that's a basic thing for any restaurant. I'm sure she was wondering why her tip wasn't as good as it should be. What a stupendous serendipitous find because I chose to take the non-highway route between Reno and Yuba City... And just decided to look for something to eat around about this neighborhood. I lived in South America and I don't find that cuisine very often so I had to try this place. Crab relleno : fire roasted chili pepper stuffed with rock crab, sriracha and feta- mozzarella blend with multiple tomatillo sauces... To die for. Real rockstar even before the sides which are perfect on their own. I've never seen a preparation like this at any Latin place and it is spectacularly good. A good portion too, considering it's crab. Sooo rich, sooo good. Also treated myself to an anticucho lamb skewer with chimichurri sauce... I could eat a double portion of this as a main course. Beautifully seasoned and delicious. I ordered them rare, they were nicely seared on the outside while rare enough on the inside, perfect in my book: the grill guy knows his craft. House guac is lemony and lovely-- maybe a little lighter than most, not as rich. A nice variation, almost a little dessert-like. The Caesar salad does use anchovies, which is rare anymore, and we love that- - and offers extra goodies like steak, pork, chicken, citrus marinated tofu, shrimp, calamari, applewood bacon, holy cow... I never thought of adding any of that to a Caesar salad, but hey I'm going to try it. Ordered that to go, for a separate meal. My server took my tip about keto and follow my lead, skipping the carbs and offering substitutions in dishes. I really appreciate her consideration there. Kudos to the whole community enjoying their outdoor season on a nippy night, 51°. They have porch heaters keeping that space enjoyable. The place is hopping on a Monday night: obviously, the locals know they have a really nice gem in their midst. Fun quirky decor and ambience. If I were local, I would be here every week. Diego's is a very special place with delicious, authentic food and amazing service from Shelly! My family ate here after a week of dining all over Grass Valley & Nevada City. Diego's is our favorite! Everything is super fresh and homemade. I LOVED the mahi mahi salad with homemade cilantro vinaigrette dressing and homemade tartar sauce; hot, fresh rolls with garlic butter and fruity sangria and sunset hibiscus lemonade. So we stopped in at Diego's on a Saturday night with some good friends to try this place out, we had a reservation which is a must have when they are busy. We got a pitcher of sangria that was very tasty and enough for 5 people. We also got the honey Sriracha shrimp and calamari for appetizers. For the main course we had a variety of different stuff all came out pretty fast and was very tasty. This place has a great atmosphere for small mom and pop restaurant. This restaurant looks very inconspicuous from the street -- I would have never thought to go here if it wasn't for a friend's recommendation. I enjoyed my visit to Diego's and would have given them 5 stars if it wasn't for a bit of a negative experience, which I will describe at the end. Once inside the front patio or indoors, you can tell that the space is very thoughtfully curated. A bit rustic, a bit spanish/french style influence, overall a really sweet aesthetic. I was excited to take my seat on the patio and enjoy the evening air. The menu has lots of options, which I was pleasantly surprised by. It seems like there is something for everyone! Our meal started off with ~delicious~ rolls and house lemonades (definitely recommend!). My boyfriend got the Panqueque Especial and ~loved~ it. It was huge and the combination of flavors was interesting but delicious. I ordered the Crab Relleno and was very disappointed. I was brought a single relleno, which I would describe as "deconstructed." I expected it to be stuffed with heavy stringy cheese and some chunks of crab, but what came inside was sort of a paste -- I couldn't make out the crab from the cheese. The texture and the flavor were... not palatable. Additionally, every other bite I had to pick crab shells out of my mouth. After about 3 bites, I decided to just eat the rice and beans on the plate and skip the relleno. Luckily my boyfriend's meal was huge, so we ended up sharing it. I left my plate mostly full. The mishap with my dish is why I took away one star from this rating. I removed the other star due to the service. After we were finished eating, the waitress dropped by to check on us and asked if we wanted the tab. I had barely touched my dinner (and had a napkin next to it full of crab shells) and she didn't ask to see if there was a problem. She just took away the full plate and brought the bill. When she saw we were paying with cash, she asked if we wanted change. I believe the formal gesture is to always bring the change unless the patron directs a server to keep it. (We told her to keep it -- over 20% tip). When she came back with the receipt, she literally slapped the folder onto the table and walked away without saying a word. My boyfriend and I were both taken aback by her attitude when she did this, as it seemed really unprovoked. We couldn't figure out what we could have possibly done to offend her. Afterward we reflected on our dinner, we felt like $65+ dollar meal was a high price for my inedible dish ~and~ poor service to top it off. I want to try Diego's again because I felt that maybe my bad dish was a one-off incident. My boyfriend, however, doesn't want to go again due to the rude service. I'm going to go again for lunch one day and will update my review accordingly. read more

Ok~ Diego's...TOTALLY! Went in for an early dinner (just me and my book). Cute, artsy, plenty of food and good music. SInce nobody was in there the waitress asked if we could crank up the 80's tunes-INXS? Yes please. I had the anticucho with chicken...comes with a side of beans, rice n grilled veggies. The chimichurri sauce was a garlicky delight (I likely stunk for a week). Absolutely awesome place that only my oldest daughter and I would enjoy, since the rest of my fam have ridiculously boring palates. There's a cute little patio outdoors, too. The margaritas are unique, different and very sweet, but that's what makes the dining experience a celebration of the culture and cuisine. Fun and upbeat ambience too! I saw a negative review from Sara K. "people of color" who need to be ignored. We normal "people of color" are tired of BS reviews from obviously bitter, whiney, self-loathing losers. Disappointing. My family and I were excited to eat here based on the great reviews, but the food was mediocre and felt rushed. My vegetarian chile relleno sat in a pool of liquid and the charred vegetables it came with had bits of black specks which made everything taste burnt. The medley of vegetables (an odd combination of celery, potatoes, broccoli, carrots, and zucchini), seemed like it was based more on what was left over in the kitchen (like a Chilean chop suey) than on what actually tasted good together. I've never had Chilean enchiladas before, but the ones my friend ordered were meh - very plain, and something you'd find at a below average Mexican restaurant. On the upside, the pupusas were delicious - a bit crunchier than your typical ones, which we liked, and very tasty and good sized. The staff was hard working, friendly, and attentive and the overall vibe was festive and fun. I just wish a little more attention had been paid to the food. read more

What a freakin menu!!!! I have always adored Diego's because their staff is usually upbeat and helpful, and I am so impressed by the consistency with which they churn out so much magical food. This town, although we're making progress, has always been severely lacking in South American (and really anything other than lame ass American) cuisine, but Diego's has been a staple for decades now, always providing high quality food that is such a delight. Their carne asada is the best in town and everything they make is seasoned to perfection! They overcharged the bill. After asking to rectify it , we paid the bill, but few days later I noticed that the credit card was overcharged . Had to call this place few times before someone a day later returned the call and confused me with someone else about a refund ( does that mean it happens often ? ). Asked to rectify the invoice, but has been almost 2 weeks and they have not done it yet. Besides, food was nothing special and they charged 2 times for a coffee refill. Terrible service and highly unprofessional service at this place. Food is super salty and over priced. I can't believe the lady told me that the servers said I was needy. Excuse me for asking for what I want at a restaurant that charges 25 dollars for a meal. Let me remind you it's called the service industry for a reason. It's your job to make recommendations and bring water and lemons and napkins and other things to the table. When I spend 110 bucks to feed 4 people of coarse it's gonna keep you busy.
