Came here for a quick lunch. We spilt the sampler plate and the crab rellano. I enjoyed the empanadas on the sampler plate the most. I wish we had gotten more of those! The jalapeños were tasty and not too spicy and the pupusa was fried perfectly. The crab rellano lacked a little bit of flavor and the cold sauce on the bottom wasn't super appetizing. I wish the sauces had been warm since I think that would have added more to the dish. Service wasn't great, it seemed like our waitress was in training. She charged us for both of our drinks even though we showed her our Yelp deal for two free drinks. Oh well. What we had was good and I liked the atmosphere in there. Worst dining experience I've had in GV...and I live here. To start, the waitress offered the two of us a table inside, in the corner. Clearly a table for 1. I found the bench seat to be uncomfortable, asked for a different table, and was told that there were no other tables available inside. I asked for a table outside. As we walked outside we passed 3 or 4 empty booths (it was a week night, not crowded). The waitress took us to a table not in the main outside dining area, but in a corner under the fan. As the fan was not on us, we spent the entire time swatting flies off of ourselves, and our food. I noted that again, there were several empty tables in the outside dining area... I get it, those were some other waitress's station, and we were stuck with this one. Our food arrived, and as we were eating, I realized that I had not been served what I ordered! Whatever, it was close. As we battled the flies we hurried through our food, then sat there waiting for our check, and sat there, and sat there...BTW the waitress never stopped by to ask how our food was, or if we needed anything. We finally got out of there, and let me just say to people who are visiting our area that this place is not cheap, not expensive, but for the price you could do a lot better. And to the management at Diego's: Golden Rule. Maybe you should try sitting at either of these tables yourself, try to get comfortable and see if you can enjoy your meal. read more

At first i was skeptical of a latin place further north of the border (im from southern california) but they are dog friendly and had beer was close to where we were staying. But hands down a great choice! Let me break it down... A. Staff fully attentive B. Very accommodating C. Food was UH-mazing! We had the bistec a lo pobre but its for a rig mans hunger! And my fiancee had the panqueque fajita we shared and both dishes were rich with flavor and in presentation! D. Is for dog friendly and was necessary in my case since doggo was traveling with us. I have lived here for 5 years and tried every local resturant at least once, and I have got to say that Diego's is my hands down favorite place to eat. The atmosphere is like sitting on a good friends patio and having an amazing chef cook for you. Relaxed, inviting, happy, full, and content would be words i would use to explain a dining expierence here. Diego's serves authentic Chilean food. It is always fresh made and delicious. If you are expecting burritos and Spanish rice, you must not have noticed the sign outside the door , nor read the meñu. However, if you are interested in a gourmet experience from Chile, you've found the best place for it, in all of Northern California. AFAIK. Surprisingly, this gem of a restaurant is in Grass Valley of all places. If you do not know what to order after reading the meñu, ask for Diego himself, or anybody else there really. read more

Diego's has so much going for it. The food is phenomenal, the ambience is awesome, the service (in my 8-10 trips) has always been excellent. If you have a taste for Latino based food, you will be impressed. Pricey. That's the only thing keeping it from 5 stars, but they are open all day, every day. That's not cheap. Everything just flows together so well here. From the ambiance of the outside dining area, to the cast iron and glass miss-matched furniture, and the fresh summery flavors. I would have given Diego's 5 stars just for the atmosphere, but the food fell slightly flat of expectation. Although it was fresh and light tasting, the flavors could have been a bit stronger. The side of black beans was very bland and I was a bit disappointed when the skewer of steak in the "Anticucho" came out with sauce to dip in rather than having been smothered ahead of time. I also mistakenly thought "barbecue vegetables" were going to have BBQ sauce when they were just plain grilled veggies. So, for 15.95, I was expecting a bit more but I'd still stop in again and try something different, the menu is unique. Oh! I had dinner last night at Diego's, and it was a pleasant surprise! I walked in Sunday evening to find a wonderful Ukulele & Guitarist singing sweetly in the background. The owner, Diane, was soo nice, as her daughter and crew were moving at the speed of light! It was busy for a Sunday night around 7pm, and the food was out of this world! The Parmesan Rockfish was fresh & had great cheese sauce, the Stuff Portebello was amazing, and the deserts, Celestino and Chocolate Fix are a must. The ambiance was very relaxed, and appreicated the large potions. So we pack our to-go boxes, then realized that Diane had comped my desert! Now it was my birthday, but we just happened by this place. Needless to say, whenever I'm in Grass Valley, I must stop by again. Strongly suggest you give this place a try! read more

I have prolonged writing this review forever because I want to love this place but just don't! This is the kind of place that you drive by and want to try. That is exactly what happened to us, we drove by one day and ever since were saying how much we wanted to try the place. It looks like a small town gathering place beautifully decorated with plants and flowers in an artsy flare. It has the most welcoming ambiance; almost like a dear friend's back yard patio. We arrived before the dinner hour on a Friday; the place was already getting busy. We poked our head inside on a rather warm day and the temperature inside felt more uncomfortable than the temperature outside, so we opted to sit outside. I think most people come to this place to be seated outside; it offers a great place to people watch. The wait staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. There was absolutely nothing lacking in the service part at all. We ordered a pitcher of sangria; the price for the pitcher (which was mostly filled with ice and fruit) seemed a bit overpriced. The flavor was alright, but with the warm summer heat most of the ice had melted before we could enjoy our first glasses; rendering the rest of the pitcher rather watered down. The menu has lots of items on it with Spanish style names for what seems like common items (like panqueque; which is what appears to be the same equivalent as a burrito...only with a thinner "tortilla" that's actually more like a crepe). The names offer a fun spin and mature feel to the overall menu itself. They do have a children's menu that has more kid friendly choices like burgers and chicken strips. While waiting for our meal to arrive they serve the most delicious fresh bread! This was honestly the highlight of my entire meal. It is really really good and really really fresh! It's served with a side of herb butter and a really delicious green tomatillo sauce (guessing) The sauce is really flavorful, it's a shame it isn't serviced with an easier "vessel" to taste it with other than the bread. The bread just soaks up the juice and can't actually scoop the chunkier tastier bits. While eating I notice that the flies are rather intrusive and there are many, it made our dining experience distracting to say the least. They also let other patrons bring dogs. I LOVE dogs but it was annoying to have been sat next to an undisciplined dog and even more undisciplined owner who let her dog crawl under our legs and table licking and begging for food. Our meal arrives: We both ordered the panqueque one with steak and the other pork. They are beautifully presented with bright colors from the sauce and guacamole contrast, but the taste?! It's awful! The pork panqueque is WAY over spiced with cumin and the pineapple that's served inside the roll seems like an abstract after thought, it's not incorporated at all and the chunks are huge! The steak was tasteless. The items were overpriced and the flavor was lacking we all left with stomach aches. Beautifully decorated, incredible staff, awful food and overpriced! read more

I'l give it four stars for the outdoor patio and the portions. It's really 3.5, but rounding down to three wouldn't be nice, it's nicer than that. The outdoor patio is really pleasant. Good light. Entrees come with soup or salad. I got the soup which was a potato bacon that day and it was pretty good. For my entree I got the crab relleno. The relleno itself was a nice big one with good flavor and the green sauce was really good - but I felt the crab filling was a little lacking in flavor - I was expecting more from crab. The beans and rice side were better than most. The red sauce wasn't overwhelming. Very standard red sauce. Busy, but no so much we couldn't get a table on Saturday night. The bread and chimichurri sauce that they just bring out are really delicious. I would eat more of that. read more

We went to Diegos for the first time tonight. It was very good and we will return again. We sat on the front patio and enjoyed our meal. Corina had the Crepedilla and I had the Ensalada Diego. Both were excellent and both came with a big side of yummy Guacamole. My salad was very large and I brought 2/3 of it home. Corina only ate about 1/2 of her Crepedillas and brought the rest home. read more

Since one restaurant in Neveda City flooded and the others close at 3pm, we searched for the best spots to eat at the next closest city, Grass Valley. Diego's looked like it cool fill the void of our awkwardly-timed lunch. We were not to be disappointed! Diego's is a quaint restaurant with lots of character, from the artwork on the walls to the arm chair in the bathroom! 4 stars for the food, 5 stars for the customer service! We had a large group and the restaurant owner was very accommodating and kept the bread rolls coming (which were amazing btw!!). At one point we all had free drink coupons for doing Yelp check-ins. We were also kinda loud, but never once did anyone at Diego's complain. All of my friend's got the panqueque. Porque(que) you ask (lame joke, I knowwww)? It's like a pot pie wrapped in a crepe! We went back and had another fabulous dinner at Diegos! They are expanding the front so there will be some outdoor seating. We were told that it will be done in a few more weeks. I'm looking forward to that. The place was packed again for a Friday but we had good luck and were seated right away! Of course I had another big glass of sangria ( i love the stuff) and the boy had a beer and the only disappointment of the night was that his first two choices of beer had just ran out. No big deal. For dinner I decided to try the Panqueque Especial which is a big crepe filled with chorizo, pineapple, rice, and a special cheese sauce served pipping hot with more cheese melted on top and dollop of guacamole. Delicious. The boy went with the special which was BBQ ribs with a chipotle peach sauce on top served with mashed potatoes and veggies. The sauce was very flavorful. He said the potatoes were some of the best he has had too. We were completely satisfied with our meals and decided to give their dessert a try. We ordered the Celestino which is a crepe filled with caramel sauce and bananas served warm with 2 scopes of vanilla ice cream on top and more caramel and a dusting of powdered sugar and cinnamon on top. Saw this on yelp, got directions on yelp and stopped as we were on our way to Downieville. We're always looking for a new place to try and we're pretty adventurous we take the reviews seriously and those that are negative we read the details and then we decide for ourself. This place is really funky, unique, and quaint. I say if you were in the area and you want to try something different and it won't be a waste of your money because the food is amazing you got to check it out. It was cold so we ate inside a cute little do this in as you walk in. It wasn't very busy because it was really after lunch hours so it wasn't loud but I would imagine as small as it is it could get kind of loud when there's a lot of people. It wouldn't make a difference to us. The place is very clean. Decor like no other! They really know two chairs like, there is writing their out the place it's really cool all over the walls. Even the restroom is unique. Nava good selection of beers in my head and was pretty happy. I'd say the only negative that I can give about this place not that I'm looking for one would be wasn't a fan of the ice tea. But I am an iced snob so I don't hold that against them at all. I asked for a soda to replace the tea in the waitress was more than sweet and said absolutely no problem at all. Presentation was really really good. I am a vegetarian and had the chili rellano stuffed with veggies and tofu. It came with two different sauces, bless beans (not can), and amazing white rice. My husband had chicken, garlic mashed potatoes and veggies seasoned and cook to perfection. The only bad thing was we were too full to try the desserts but next time, in going to save room. We had the best night here! This was my first time at Diego's. We came in for dinner and Quinn was our waitress. She was so sweet and catering to all our wants and needs. Between four of us we ordered a mango white wine sangria (the white wine sangria rotates different flavors but Quinn let us try both white and red to decide), honey shrimp appetizer, jalapeño poppers, steak sandwich and garlic fries, chicken tacos, surf & turf fajitas, mahi mahi tacos. I have drafted this review a handful of times over the past few years, and why I never finished is a complete mystery to me. Perhaps I keep waiting for the other proverbial shoe to drop, but I assure you that it never has, and it likely never will. As a vegan, I always approach new restaurants with a certain degree of apprehension, but from the first moment I walked through their doors, I felt both excited and welcomed. Our waitress was bubbly and positive, and she immediately got to work making sure our littles were set up for a good time; she quickly brought creative coloring mats and crayons. Then she broke down for us, very thoroughly, what our vegan options were and how to easily make some other menu items vegan as well. When the food arrived, I was so busy drooling over the gorgeous stuffed portobello that I only barely remember the feeling of "will my kids eat this?" They did. They ate their whole meals. I have eaten here several more times since that day, and the quality of the food never ceases to impress me. You can tell that these chefs enjoy cooking. I have also never had an unpleasant interaction with an employee here. I mean, the service industry usually lends itself to occasional bad days, but how could someone have a bad day in this environment? The restaurant itself is somehow both artistic and cozy at the same time, the customers are happy to be there, and the air smells of delicious. It was during COVD lockdown that I really put Diego's to the test. I wanted to get my hands of some of their amazing spicy orange sauce to surprise my husband for his birthday, and they totally came through for me. That's when I learned that they make the sauce in house, and could I be any more in love with our local Chilean restaurant?! We ordered a fair amount of take-out from here during lockdown, and it needs to be said that the food lost no value during its journey from their kitchen to mine. Opening the containers transports me back to the days of clinking silverware and sangria glasses, and I very much look forward to returning to the dining area when I feel safe enough to do so. Tonight we ordered for pick up (a gifted meal from my mother-in-law, thank you Linda!) and it was still hot by the time we got home. Their rolls alone are amazing! Soooo we ordered 40 of those...we had Achiote de Pollo, Steak Fajitas and the kids split the Chicken Street-Style Tacos. You get so much food! The search for the world's best fish taco continues. Of all things Diego's only has fish tacos on Thursdays, and we hit it on a Wed. Had the steak sandwich with garlic fries, very very good. They bake all their own breads and they are tasty, especially the donut hole shaped bread with garlic butter. This place has a special decor, very eclectic and fun to just look around the front room and study all the stuff they have collected. Demand the front room as the back room was dark, yet well decorated. Back for the fish tacos some other time. My experience at this place was truly memorable. The moment we pulled up to Diego's I knew this was my kinda place. A hanging Christmas tree in a basket as decor, totally puts a cranky and crabby traveler in better spirits after bumper to bumper traffic on HWY 80 (Truckee to Sonoma). The wait for a table for two at peak dinner time wasn't too bad, maybe 15-20min. We were sat in the cozy corner and had a good view to people watch. How can you not love a place that makes their own bread and serves you herb butter for spread - yum! Our server was SO sweet and helpful in explaining to us how each special was prepared and gave us some wonderful recommendations. For an appetizer we ordered homemade breadcrumbs jalapeno poppers served with some bomb diggity guacamole !! I so badly wanted an empanadita so our server added one to the poppers at no charge so we can have a positive first experience at Diego's. Man, that's what I call CUSTOMER SERVICE ! Also you can a lot about a place by their soups: MUSHROOM soup was amazing, not too creamy, not too much broth, just right and good balance. For drinks the hubby had the electric lemonade with fresh strawberries, I opted for the sangria- which was to my liking. If we didn't have to drive 2 more hrs in the car I would have ordered a pitcher of sangria. Our entrees were really delicious. I had a special dish: two homemade tortilla tacos- grilled talapia fish taco and a steak taco. The man had a pork crepe filled with goodness. Needless to say we were pretty full half way thru the entrees and had to box it for home. Next time when we are in Grass Valley we will for sure come be back and leave room for dessert. The food is tasty and fresh but they charge ambiguously and inaccurately for their meals, which is absolutely unacceptable. We've eaten here before and loved it, the fish tacos are delicious and the atmosphere is great, service has never been an issue.... However this time, upon looking closely at our receipt when the bill came, they had overcharged us by $3.95 on one of our meals, a fish taco plate and $3.45 on the other, two fish tacos a la carte. We got out the menu and pointed it out to the waiter, he told us there was an upcharge for the mahi mahi and the shrimp for each of our meals. There is no mention of any upcharge on the menu anywhere (I attached photos of the menu as it is currently listed online and the same as the in restaurant menu and of the charges on our receipt) and our waiter didn't mention anything about an upcharge when we ordered. ALSO, why would one be charged an extra $3.95 and one $3.45, why arbitrary different prices? We didn't bother making a big deal out it, paid our bill and left. I just feel that it's worth mentioning and that this place overcharges you and doesn't tell you. It seems like very shady business to me to charge people a price that is listed nowhere on the menu and wasn't mentioned by anyone. Very deceptive, and we will not be returning. Super unfortunate because we really like the food and it's such a cute spot, but that's just disrespectful. read more
