One of the few places which serves Chinese BBQ in Austin. I have gone here multiple times for their bbq pork, and they have not disappointed. The pork is juicy and had a great flavor, and love pairing it with hot oil. I rank this a 7/10. I went today and also tried their pork belly, I liked it, but it may be an acquired taste for many as it is pretty fatty, which I do like in this case, with a crunchy skin. I rank this a 7/10. Only downside is that the bbq dishes only come with rice. If your looking for a Chinese bbq fix you should check it out but getting to go is also an option. read more

The food was pretty good and the atmosphere was nice. However, the portion size is a little small for the price they charge. And I'm sure this is a fluke, but there was a fly in my water. I feel like at a place like this, I should at least get bowls for my rice (instead of a plate) and hot tea, like other Chinese places. The service was nice and food came out quickly and hot. The only Cantonese restaurant in-town that reminds me of my childhood in Asia. When dine-in was still open, I just remember service was swift, not the friendliest but didn't bother me much. My family and I almost always order the same items from here: combination fried rice, beef and Chinese broccoli, wonton soup, snow pea leaves, egg tofu & king mushroom (with bok choy), & combo pan-fried (crispy) noodles. Occasionally we would order other dishes to try out, like the BBQ. Combination fried rice used to automatically came with egg, but these days the online order has the option to add egg for $2. Not sure what's up with that, but you can't eat combo fried rice without eggs. Combination fried rice may sound so ordinary to many but no, this is yang chow fried rice where you got all the different meats including BBQ bits and shrimp inside and tossed in wok fire. It's drier than regular fried rice and sometimes smokier. Beef and Chinese broccoli also sounds so ordinary, but the beef slices here have been tenderized properly. And to make Chinese broccoli to green brilliance with flavorful oil requires skills otherwise it becomes too oily or sometimes leaves a funky aftertaste. Basic dish done right. Wonton soup/wonton noodle soup in Din Ho reminds me of the one I had in Hong Kong except the broth is on the lighter side, which I prefer more than the kind served drenched in fish oil. Snow pea leaves dish is generous. I'd say this is one of the most luxurious, purist vegetable dish in a Cantonese restaurant. Not cheap but it's of great quality, note that raw snow pea leaves are not cheap in grocery stores. Egg tofu & king mushroom dish is one of their Chef's Specials. No meat here but if you have never tried it, you must. Egg tofu is savory and silky. King mushroom is slightly chewy and flavorful. The bok choy with it is still crunchy and juicy. Just try their crispy noodles, it's usually cooked to the right crispiness and the combo sauce that you pour on top has rich variety of texture. Then once the sauce sits on the noodles longer, you have another experience with the drenched noodles. No longer crispy but more on the chewy texture. Classic dish for family meals. I'm not a fan of BBQ meats because I don't quite enjoy the grease that come with it. But they have one of the better ones in town. Pardon my food essay. read more

The customer services at Din Ho is very poor. They are understaffed and we heard them screaming at their own co-workers as well as customers. We ordered whole roasted duck to-go but the guy who was chopping the duck, he cheated on the duck's drum legs and thighs because when we got home, those parts are not in the box. We saw one of the hong kong lady there screaming and yelling in the back as well as whispering something to the chopper, maybe telling him to not give us those and save/sell them for extras to other customers. It happens a lot with RIPPING OFF customers in Asian restaurants. If you decide to get whole roasted ducks here , DON'T LET THEM CUT IT. Get the whole duck and cut it yourself at home. Very unpleasant experience here and we will not be coming back. Very shady business practices here. We rather go 99 Ranch at least we can see the man cutting the ducks without cheating us. Food is good, But I went there a while back with a guest and was seated, We both ordered food and drinks(soda). Right after ordering , I went outside to answer a phone call, when I came back in to take my seat, I was approached publically by the rude owner(older female Chinese woman) and she rudely, loudly said NO PUBLIC RESTROOMS! I was so embarrassed as she had made a scene and make me feel so uncomfortable. My guest had to tell her we had already ordered and I was just coming back into the restaurant after being previously seated...I was so embarrassed and shocked at her audacity I didn't even say a word only my guest spoke to her.... It was awful, no manners ...taking my money else where from now on. Sorry Austinites! You need a better Chinese BBQ restaurant given the recent economic boom in your city. Just take a look at the attached picture of the roasted duck and you know the guys in the kitchen either did not know or simply skipped the most important step of preparing roasted duck - pumping air in between the duck skin and meat. Having lived in Austin since 2005 and never finding a good Chinese restaurant here, this is what I expected - terrible. We had high hopes after getting a referral from a good friend, but were sorely disappointed. We ordered the 2 BBQ meat with the soy sauce chicken and pork. Both mostly inedible due to bones and gristle. We also ordered the tofu entree, which was okay (and luckily edible), but not good. Lastly we had the wonton soup, which was bland, and again the wontons were full of gristle. A sad Saturday evening meal to say the least. If you're looking for good asian food in Austin, we do recommend Three Gorges. Had that last weekend and it was delicious. Or resort to PF Changs if you need to. You can skip Din Ho. read more

I've been to this restaurant twice, once this month and once two years ago. I'm from NYC and we have some of the best and most authentic foods there so I never hold any of my out-of-state reviews to that high of a standard. But in comparison to the other Chinese bbq places I've had in Texas, Din Ho is pretty good. I ordered char siu and marinated chicken for takeout over the phone but when I got there, they told me they were out of chicken so I had to settle for roast duck. They have good business despite being take-out only for covid. Their char siu is good here but I prefer the duck over at their competitor First Chinese BBQ. read more

I actually live in Orange County, California, but went to UT in the late 1990's-early 2000's and ALWAYS made Din Ho my go-to Chinese restaurant. I've since moved away but every time I visit Austin for work or pleasure, I have made a visit to Din Ho a mandatory part of my trip. When I am able to travel again and I make my way back to Austin, I will make Din Ho my first restaurant I visit. Although I'm not there locally, I will forever be a loyal customer. Thank goodness I just happened to come across this place! The food here was so good it nearly brought me to tears. If you're in the Austin, TX area you have to stop by Din Ho Chinese BBQ. I ordered the BBQ pork and the BBQ roast duck, which came with white rice. I also ordered a side of pork egg rolls. The duck and pork were cooked perfectly, and the egg rolls had just the right amount of crisp. The food was absolutely delicious and I would definitely eat at this place all the time if I lived in the area. Next time I'm in Austin, I'll make sure to visit Din Ho again. Went for lunch today. I can not believe that a Chinese restaurant does not have any Lunch specials. Since I was eating alone and it would be a waste to order all the Fried Rice and BBQ pork to try and put together a lunch I was left to just order the BBQ Pork. For the record it is very good and was both tasty and fresh. This place has been in this busy center for a long time so I doubt that my complaint will do anything. read more

So good and worth the hype! We ordered via UberEats and got the #7 BBQ Combination of Roast Duck, Char Siu, and Roasted Pork Belly. All were so good but the char siu was my favorite. I never had duck before and ended up not liking it as much as the other stuff we ordered but my partner really liked it. The pork belly had crispy skin and was also delicious. We also had to order the Walnut Shrimp since it was mentioned often in all the good reviews and it was so worth it. The shrimp is actually large, unlike other restaurants where it just looks big because there's a ton of batter around a small shrimp. The candied walnut and the sauce weren't too sweet which we prefer. So many people recommended Din Ho to us throughout the years we've lived here and we just never got to trying it til now. oh... my... gosh y'all. So I was hesitant to try this place because my daughter checked the Yelp rating and it was 3.5.... BOY..... I had never been, so I will give you a run down of what to expect. It's a family style setting (I was told this there... yet the amount of food we got was IMPRESSIVE LOL). We each got drinks and ordered egg rolls (order comes with 2 and sauce). We also got wonton soup. Oh em gee. That soup... *chef's kiss* it was like a warm hug. So then each of us proceeds to order something (remember I mentioned family style?) They have no kid menu, so you can get combination fried rice or chicken fried rice or whatever meat you want in your fried rice for the kids to eat. The dishes start coming out. Sesame chicken , beef broccoli, char siu (chinese bbq pork OMG), chicken lo mein, cashew chicken... I was like, "how are we going to eat all this?" When I tell you it was gone.... My kids are picky, too, so I was surprised they were eating. Even my 2 year old was scarfing down lo mein. I even watched him snatch lo mein from his sister's plate HAHA! I will definitely be returning to this place. My friend took us here, and he said he will only eat Chinese food from Din Ho. Whoa. That's what i have to say! we were on the hunt for chinese food on new year's day, and we hit the gold mine. we had the roasted duck, the roasted pork belly, chinese broccoli, steamed buns, fried wontons, and sesame chicken (for the kids). Holy smokes it was so much food! we have at least another meal for later today when we get home and lounge. we also got a bottle of pinot grig, and the bill was only about 100$. Wr had dinner at Din Ho today! I'm a new transplant from Southern California, I was recommended here for some good classic Chinese food and Chinese bbq. We ordered the hot and sour soup, Peking duck, steam buns, beef with green onion(aka Mongolian beef) bbq pork crispy noodles, and water spinach. First they didn't explain to us that the steam buns are the little taco buns that you eat the duck with, I'm the pictures on Yelp we were under the impression that it would come with the buns green onions and a dipping sauce. I'm not sure about what it is about Austin but y'all have a real shortage on dipping sauces. When I asked for a sauce to dip the bland duck in, our waitress looked at me like I was stupid! As plum sauce or a ginger sauce are traditionally served with duck. They charged us for the buns and 3$ for some green onion which should've been a garnish, and another 3$ for hoisen sauce to dip the duck in! The soup was ordinary, the noodles were bland, the beef with green onion was bland and the water spinach was probably the best dish we had. The duck and no sauce is a huge bummer, we might go again an order some basic things next time. read more

Din Ho is definitely becoming one of my top Chinese BBQ places in Austin. I tried their roast duck and char siu. The char siu was tender and the perfect balance of umami and sweet. The roast duck was also super flavorful. I also tried their fried tofu with shrimp, which was so surprisingly delicious. It's blocks of deep fried soft tofu that literally melt in your mouth. Great food, service was not so much. I definitely saw that they treated us less well than other tables. For example, they would pour soup for tables of asian customers but just dropped ours on our table to serve ourselves. They also didn't provide any chopsticks. We asked for some and they asked how many we needed knowing we had 5 people in our party. We also ordered more food midway through our meal and it took forever. A woman came and threw our check on the table before we ever got served the rest of our meal. I was looking it over when she kept saying something at me... I had no idea what she was saying but I handed it back. She didn't apologize or anything. Just walked away with it. Later the rest of the food came. I wasn't sure if they had forgotten to add the new food to the check but when i got it back later it was the same price and everything was listed. So I guess she just brought it to us without even knowing we weren't done. Then as I was paying I see they charged us 18% for a party of 5 or more. We had 3 adults two kids... nowhere in there do they say they charge this fee. Whenever I see that, I never pay anymore. It's a loss for them because I always tip more than that. The food was tasty, I'm sure it's loaded with MSG.... But I don't plan on coming here again. We drove a ways to come here, wanting good authentic food. My big question is why treat us like we aren't wanted? We were good paying customers with nice manners and we respect all culture. I think they need to revamp their service. First time eating here after hearing about it from friends for so many years. I was impressed. Went on a Sunday night at about 8:00pm. We were seated immediately and our server took our drink orders right away. Another person came by a minute later to make sure someone was taking care of us. We had a couple questions and they were happy to answer them. We had the Hot & Sour soup which was excellent. The server even ladled the soup into our bowls for us which I felt was a nice touch. Also had the Bean Curd in Spicy Szechuan Sauce which was very good. Then we had the BBQ Pork which was good but not great. It was warm and tender, but overall the flavor was nothing special. Next time I will try the duck. The pickled cabbage was also a fantastic compliment to everything we ordered. Overall a great first experience. After reading many reviews it seems the most common complaints are bad service and cold food. We experienced neither. We will be coming back soon. read more

Din Ho is BACK! Din Ho has not always been the most reliable Chinese establishment in Austin. About a decade ago, the wife and I stopped coming after a longish series of ho-hum meals. Asia Cafe and A+ Szechuan were simply more exciting more consistent alternatives. Well, a lot can change in ten years. Now the cooking at Din Ho is top of the line. My wife ordered the dish she always used to have: the Plum Sauce Fish Fillet Hot Pot plus a special of egg tofu and king mushrooms. I went with the mixed pig organ barbecue, and a pork soup with tofu. The Plum Sauce Fish was much tastier than it ever used to be. However, the standout was the pork soup. Pork soup is usually an average to grim option at most places that are not all out dedicated ramen noodle places. Pork is fatty. Pork stock is greasy. This pork soup was full of flavor without a spot of grease. Better yet, the pork in the soup was as lean as chicken breast But tasted porkier than Porky the Pig. Like a stand-out "pay attention to me" exclamation mark level of actual pork taste. Tiny shitake caps were fresh and vibrant. The greens and tofu played well with everything else. This is a bowl of soup that could have competed with Ramen Tatsu-ya in the same Asian food complex. (Side Note: the proximity of Ramen Tatsu-Ya may have been what stimulated Din Ho to jack up their game.) The Barbecue was also lovely. Pig Organs are often the most interesting thing to order at a Chinese BBQ place. You get - depending on the place - two to six different kinds of meat with your order. (Tripe, intestines, pig ears, tongue, heart, whatever) All the meats taste REALLY different from each other. This is a plus when you are having meat, just the meat, and only the meat. Unlike everything else in a Chinese restaurant, with BBQ there is no sauce or side vegetables for extra entertainment. So having a mix of radically different tastes on the platter is a good thing. (I can get pretty bored working my way through a duck - even allowing for skin versus meat). In this case, though each part of the pig requires a different cooking time and a different cooking technique, each was perfectly done and at peak flavor before being mixed with the other components. A fine platter and fine eating. The featured dish of tofu and mushrooms was the only relatively boring dish on the menu - but then bland tofu dishes tend to be bland tofu dishes. Altogether, this was much more dynamic and vibrant eating than we were used to seeing at the old Din Ho. Din Ho is now back on our rotation of Asian Chinese restaurants to be visited regularly. And given how many impressive Chinese restaurants have opened in Austin in the last ten years - It is something to say Din Ho can hold its own with the newbies. * * * * * Postscript: On looking at the other Yelp reviews - There seems to be a general thumbs down on the other BBQ items. Pork meat, duck and chicken all get bad reviews From reviewers who know their Chinese BBQ. It could be that they do Pig Organs much better than they do regular meats Which could make sense since the dishes are prepared in very different ways. Really good Chinese food, probably one of the best so far in north Austin that's a bit more affordable than Qin and Li It doesn't compare to Houston's Chinese food in Bellaire, but when I'm craving Chinese food, I can rely on Din Ho Bbq The wait times are a bit lengthy at dinner, but it's worth it Items I've eaten at this restaurant: - BBQ Pork (Char Siu): this one unfortunately isn't as tasty as I'd like it to be, it's not bad at all but there are better options - Roast Duck: Very good and juicy, very savory and delicious. Do note that the portions of meat on the cuts will vary as expected, meaning some will have a good amount of meat and some will have fewer - Pork Chops (chinese style): really good, will always order this when I visit - very reminiscent of Cantonese Peking Pork Chops, but a tad more on the sour end - House seafood soup: very good, always a good option, meat is a bit in the smaller end. I did have a small piece of crab shell in my serving, but that me appreciative in that it's authentic crab - Sauteed Snow Pea Leaves: really good, has a subtle sweetness and pairs well with the fattier meats - Sauteed Water Spinach: really good, better than Snow Pea Leaves imo in both taste and cost, pairs great with the fattier/savory dishes read more
