Have been a loyal patron here for over 10 years, like 2-3 times in a week sometimes. The staff is awful. I put up with it as long as I could because of location, ambiance and the cocktails are great. No more. The hostess, many different ones are the rudest of them all. This has been happening pre-COVID and worse after. Worst part is I don't think anyone here cares. They've lost there great clientele and now it's basic b's with basic B staff and basic ass food that used to be good and now is under or over cooked and tasteless. Let me start out with saying I am a bartender in the New York/ In the industry for over 20 years. I currently work at a restaurant that cares and works hard during this time of Covid. The overall experience was horrible and I don't write reviews often but felt I had to so the business (if it cares) is aware. The server was wonderful and the food was excellent- to be clear. Host was rude, cold and completely full of unnecessary attitude. He sat my boyfriend and myself at the furthest table outside, no heat lamp and definitely the worst table. I would understand if the place was packed but it truly was NOT BUSY. He then had a snarky tone stating that we could only use the table for 90 minutes- who would even want to sit at such a cold and bad spot for longer. We spent $200, we support NYC restaurants although we are working class. But the face of the business was a grumpy old white man who was profiling the people coming into eat & drink. I went here with a buddy of mine. We checked out Marlow & Sons first but found the Diner to be the meals we want. The two restaurants are associated. The waitress at the Diner writes the menu of the day on the paper of the table and then orally describes the dishes. We ordered the scrambled eggs and the signature burger. Burger was juicy and the fries were Crispy. The best of all from this dish is the unique ketchup from First Feld (NJ made) with the fries. 'Menu' was scrawled childishly on the back of a receipt, we had to use our phone flashlights to read it, waiter took our order without writing it down, tried REALLY hard to commit it to memory and had to slowly repeat it out over to us again, struggling to remember what we had just told him (just write it down, dude, we will not tip extra for good memory) And then the food. A few pieces of cold shrimp with a weird cheese sprinkled on grapefruit was just a failed and unappetizing experiment, and grossly overpriced. Standard, sloppy calamari rings in a basic sauce I could have made at home, over a piece of mushy bread was equally unappetizing. The spaetzle tasted only of cheese, and was worth a fraction of what it costs. And then finally the duck breast, which arrived with cold mushrooms, and fat over the top which wasn't rendered off properly but otherwise tasted good except for another- surprise- slice of grapefruit underneath it, which pushed us over the edge into outright hatred of this sort of overpriced mediocre NY food experience. On the plus side, the wine was good, the interior of the resto and general vibe was nice, staff friendly, and the manager was understanding- she comped a lot of the food. But ultimately, we still ended up paying 60$ for a bit of spaetzle and 3 glasses of wine. No thanks. read more

The poached Hake over a green vegetable purée was amazing and beautifully plated. The staff were super friendly and generally looked like they were being well-treaded, which I'm happy to pay more for, both for selfish reasons (I'll also be well-treated) and ethical reasons (people aren't slaving to feed me). But the problem I had was portion size. I'm not a big eater but the 4-oz or was it 6-oz piece of hake left me wanting. And it was 34 bucks. Hake costs tops $6 a pound wholesale, so adding a few more ounces would likely cost a buck or two, which I'd have been happy to pay for. So, going on taste, presentation and staff I would have given the place 4 stars, but I left wanting more of that beautiful Hake. One small side note, the menu is written by the staff member on the paper tablecloth as they explain each dish, which I get, everyone's trying to do something new, but it's a bit much, particularly in an era where people don't write a lot; my handwriting is hard for even me to read ; ) read more

The epitome of "hipsterdom" in Williamsburg. First, the space itself. It looks like a diner, but it tries to be a farm to table restaurant. Next the menu, wait no there isn't one. Waitress comes over, very unamused with us being there by the way, writes the menu on the table. One of the dishes, a salad, is entitled "lettuces." We pick a few things and honestly I'm excited. It's farm to table, it's well reviewed, it's fairly expensive, so common it's gotta be good. We got the bone broth soup, burger, liverwurst, and a German noodle dish. The soup was the best part, really nice flavorful base. The rest of the items were forgettable. Everything was alright, kinda like in a diner so maybe the diner look isn't done ironically. Overall, would never return. On top of the food being whatever, the service was very April from Parks and Rec. If you are gonna act like you don't care if a customer walks in, and call a salad "lettuces," the food has to be excellent, but it simply wasn't. "Meh" right back at ya! read more

The service here was absolutely terrible. Our server was extremely rude and unwelcoming. She took over 15 min to come to our table and did not introduce herself or anything and said "do you want to order?" We had ordered with another waiter because she took so long to come and when we told her we had already ordered, she just left without apologizing. That was the only time she came to our table. When we were leaving, she did not say thank you or anything and walked right past us. It's safe to say I will not be coming here again. I was in the area for a meeting, and the people I met told me not to go to Bonita, for reasons unknown. However, they did not just shoot down my plan without offering an alternate option: they said that Diner made "a serious burger." Since I agree that burgers are no laughing matter, I put up no resistance at all and took them up on the recommendation. Now, I don't like to use the word "hipster" that often...I don't just toss it around willy-nilly. But if anyone is a hipster, the people that hang out at Diner are hipsters. And for some reason, there was an inordinate number of people there with duffel bags. As if they had just gotten into town, and they needed stop by Diner immediately. Or perhaps they were leaving town, and couldn't go without a last lunch at the hipster commune. But that is neither here nor there. Diner made me a very decent burger. It was cooked to order and sufficiently juicy. I enjoyed the crispy fries, as well as the condiments provided (a nice spicy mustard and mayo). However, this was not the Best Burger in NYC, as some of the reviews led me to believe. Also, for a place as spartan, as deliberately grimy as Diner, $13 is a steep price for a burger and fries. I've been coming to this place for years. The food is always good, the atmosphere is nice. But the service, at least recently, has declined. It unfortunately feels like the no tipping system (which I tend to support) has taken effect. The waiters don't really care about what they were doing or serving, little to no knowledge of what was on the menu. Your waiter will write down the menu by hand on your table, but only when you've first ordered drinks. At least that's what they kept telling me. Until I insisted that I'd like to hear, or at least know the menu options and what I'm working with, as it's going to influence what I'm drinking for the evening. Seems to make sense to me and be a relatively simple concept but they continued to stress that I should order drinks first. When I'd ask them (I spoke with multiple staff) to repeat or go into further detail about what was on the menu, it would delivered with a disgruntled sigh. I came in last night for dinner as a party of four. We sat inside, ordered a steak, 2 burgers, and swordfish. We waited almost and hour and a half for our food. At roughly the hour mark I asked a waiter if they could check on our food, to which they gave some excuse about how cooking a steak is a super long process. Uh... okay then. About 10/15 minutes later the food arrived, and was good. But it's not like we received anything complimentary to make up for the situation. On the other hand, the pan roasted half chicken was sublime. I usually avoid chicken when dining out but this bird was top notch. A couple of things to note: Though Diner is the name of the joint, the setting and menu are both a definite step up. Prices definitely match the vibe, though. I was pretty disappointed with the small number of options in the wine by the glass category. Service was friendly and professional and while I dug the whole "Let's write the menu out on the paper tablecloth" thing, it would have been nice to have a paper menu (with prices) to refer back to. The best part of Diner is the atmosphere. I went to have dinner there on a fall evening. It was dark outside and dark inside. It took me a minute to figure out where the door was. The place was full at 8pm. Luckily I was eating alone and there were a few solo spots at the bar. A server politely ushered me over with an extended arm. They brought over the menu printed over on receipt paper and a drink menu laminated in plastic. I already knew what I wanted, though. The founder of the company that I work at recommended their burger to me ages ago. I was in the mood for one, so I went for it. I opted for cheese. It comes with fries. I also got a glass of red wine. After ordering, I took out my notebook and started writing. Usually people glare at you when you do that, no one here did. In fact, I noticed a few people reading. This is one of those places that makes me feel more like a writer than I really am, thus this really poetic review. Anyway, they gave me some bread. I was almost like "Nah." But the butter looked good. And it was good. I ate some of the bread with it. Then my food came. The burger doesn't look huge, but it's thick. I'm guessing it's an eight ounce patty. I finished most of it and definitely had no regrets, but was very full. It's served on a soft, melt in your mouth bun. No tomatoes, just pickled onions and lettuce. The ketchup they serve seems homemade? It's good and not salty. I slathered some on. The fries portion is GIGANTIC. Like I hardly made a dent in them. Crispy, salty, perfect. I should also mention that the burger was cooked to a perfect medium. Juicy and pink but not too runny. I might get it medium rare next time. I finished the whole burger because I'm some type of beast, and thought about getting a dessert (they sounded really good), but instead opted for a French press. I felt better about the burger after the coffee. By this time, the place had cleared out a lot. I continued writing and texting. I was not rushed at all. When the check came, it was accompanied with a postcard and a pen. I checked to see if they had a lot of the pens (they did) and then kept both. Diner is the type of place that you wish you lived around the corner from and could visit everything night. Is that trouble coming down street? I believe it is... I came here with some friends on an evening when the sky was about to open up. At this point in the night, only intermittent small drops of rain could be felt. It felt like it would end up being a dark and stormy adventure. The interior is beautiful, it is a refurbished 1927 diner car. I absolutely love the ceiling. It is shaped like a barrel vault and somehow it feels like you are inside a womb. It felt snug and narrow. It is also dimly lit, so a good place to take a date. I believe I ordered up a Square Root or something. It was of the rye whiskey variety. I don't recall much of the drink, but I didn't vomit, so that was good. I do remember chatting up a very interesting person, and the whole night, we kept talking about "chaparritas." The dialogue kept flowing between English, Chinese and Spanish. You have got to love slang Spanish. I would love to visit again and have a proper dining experience. When I saw the outside of this place I thought I was sadly mistaken. How the hell did I bookmark this place and how does this place have 400+ reviews and 4 stars? The outside looks like a gross, run down mobile home and the door is a piece of sh*t that's hard to open. But the inside of this restaurant is what caught me by surprised. It's small and does look like its namesake, a diner. The food was anything but generic, diner food. They obviously did not put a lot of money in the ambiance of this joint. There are no menus, no tablecloths only candles. No sort of decor whatsoever. What they did put all their money into was the food. They're menus change daily I'm assuming since the waitress had to hand write what they were serving on paper tablecloth in front of us. For appetizers we ordered the beets with yogurt and the beef tartare. The beets were heavenly! I wish I knew what type of reduction was on those beets. It was so delicious and the yogurt complemented them perfectly. The beef tartare had a fried egg on top which always excites me. The toast it was served on unfortunately was burnt, hard and cold. I will probably not order it again. For the entree my friend ordered the char (a fish I have never tried until Diner) with broccoli raab. I ordered the whole trout that was butterflied and deboned. The char was good. The broccoli raab was smokey and delish. But it was the trout that took the cake and gave this place 5 stars. It was to die for! It was served lentils with a spicy kick. For dessert we ordered the apple cheddar tartine. Perfectly sweet but I wish it was larger. I will return to Diner. They cook food perfectly and only focus on that. read more

This is the epitome of new Brooklyn (in a good way). Diner is a cramped little old school diner (circa 1920s) reclaimed and turned into a go-to destination for delicious food cooked and prepared by someone who really cares. Definitely no crappy diner food here. The only issue is the prices are a little high and portions are a little small, nothing outrageous though. I was so pleased with my meal that it didn't bother me that I wasn't full leaving the place, something that normally bothers me a lot more. I came here for brunch and got the country breakfast ($13) which was a biscuit, split and topped with sausage gravy served with a couple scrambled eggs and some greens. I'd go as far as to say these were the best biscuits and gravy I've ever had. As far as other prices, you're looking at $5 for bacon or OJ, mimosas and draft beer started at $7 though they did have bottles for $5, and diner entrees here are in the mid 20s. Easily my favorite place to eat in Williamsburg. Diner, took a very raw space and turned it into a haven for good food and great people. The interior is classy, yet shabby and very sophsticated. How it all comes together so perfectly? I'm not sure, but boy is it lovely. The food is amazing from the huge killer hamburgers to the mussels and yummy chocolate flourless cake. The specials (written out for you on your tablecloth - so charming) are always masterful culinary concoctions from soups, to cheese plates and entrees like halibut and squash. I know that last one sounds god awful, but it's a must have. Brunch is my favorite time to go, but be forewarned... Try and go either early (say 10 AM or late 1 PM) to miss the swarm of Diner devotees who know the truth - Diner is the best place to eat in Williamsburg hands down. If you find yourself crowded out of this space, head next store to Marlowe. Owned by the same people, Marlowe is also a treat to behold. read more

Had an outstanding meal. Can't believe it took me so long to get to this place...thankfully, citibike has made that easier. Mackeral was fantastic, as was the corn. Our neighbors suggested ordering both and they were right. The entrees were good, particuarly the accompaniments with them. I particuarly liked what came on the pork chop, which were some nice roasted peppes and polenta. One complaint: I pleaded with the server for them to cook the pork chop medium rare, and said I was happy to order something else if that wasn't possible. Have been coming to this place for 15+ years and used to be a fan but am put off by the way they've implemented their new tip-included policy. I would understand the prices going up 20% but they seem to have jumped by 30-40%. The burger is now $25??? (It was $16 or $17 before.) A draft beer is now $10?? I understand the reasoning for service-included policies, and am happy to see the entire staff benefit, but can someone explain why the prices have gone up SO much? I also think that, since there's no printed menu, the server could say a word letting people know about the new policy before launching into the (always awkward) scrawling-the-menu-on-the-table performance. We can't be the only regulars confused about the massive price hike. Our waitress (who was great) explained it when we asked and apologized for not having mentioned it at the outset ... but when we had to sit through the whole 5-minute menu recital two more times (ugh) as tables were seated to our left and right, she didn't mention it to them either so clearly staff has been instructed not to. Not sure I'll be back. This was always just a casual hang for me, a place to have a beer and a simple meal, and I always tipped well because the service and atmosphere are great, but something about the way this has been introduced is off and has killed my warm feelings about the place. Diner wears a charming and retro aesthetic, housed in a tiny dining space reminiscent of old train cars and vintage diners. But there's nothing retro about the food; despite the name, no standard diner fare awaits here. On a quiet Broadway corner, outdoor seats cluster around the non-descript restaurant, offering views of Williamsburg Bridge. Inside, there's a mix of leather or wood booth seating along one window-lined wall, seats at a bar, and a few more booths in a nook off to the side. Diner is known for extensive lines, a product of popularity, very limited capacity, and a no reservation policy. Arriving early for lunch on a rainy Monday was a nice way to enjoy the place; the absence of people lent a lovely, small-town feel to the place. The easy-going and friendly staff got us settled in right away. In a gesture that could be gimmicky but instead delighted us, our waiter narrated the menu, writing one word to describe each dish right onto the white paper lining our table. Of course, an orally communicated menu could only work with a small menu; for lunch, theirs was only 7 items deep. That short list of appetizers and entrees was diverse, but Diner isn't the place for overly picky or limited palates. The menu that day? Summed up in their one word shorthand: peach, string bean, frittata, succotash, whitefish, brisket sw*, and burgers. The food sparkled with fresh ingredients and skillful prep. The chilled peach soup was refreshing yet rich, dotted with crushed almonds and olive oil. Brightly flavored string bean salad well-balanced with spicy arugula and warm feta cheese. The delicious succotash was an excellent meld of sweet corn, earthy mushrooms, and smoked fish. Crusty, gently charred fresh bread smeared with good white fish salad finished off the entrees. Our server asked if we wanted dessert, and we asked for a menu without thinking. One dessert was all they offered, and surely no other was needed if its a fresh white peach and berry crisp, hot and perfectly balanced between sweet and tart. The beverage list is quite extensive and not committed to anyone's memory; there's a menu for that. Besides the long wine list, there are cocktails from the bar and respectable beer choices. Diner is a wonderful place to dine. Its ambience and style suggests precious, yet it isn't. The compact and ever-changing menu will be an attraction for those open-minded and curious, and the quality of the food rewarding. This is the first review I have ever written for Yelp, and I do so hoping that Andrew Tarlow & Diner staff see this and can improve. I've been coming to Diner for ten years, ever since I moved to New York. It was always the best--the friendliest, the most comfortable, the best food, the best wine. I'd go every single week for lunch, bring my parents when they were in town for dinner, even spent a New Years or two there with friends. Over those ten years, things have gone through flux--sometimes the food is better than other times. The experiment of going gratuity free a few years ago didn't help matters--the longest-serving staff left, lunch service was canceled (except for Fridays) to help lower costs, and the whole vibe just changed. But then the food picked up again, the experiment was ended (with 20% higher food charges, as the prices never went back to what they were before), and I thought all was right again. But last night, I brought two friends in from out of town for dinner. We sat in a half-empty restaurant. Prices recently seemed to go up another 20% since my last time in. ($40 for three scallops as a main?? $40 fish entree??) The food was mediocre at best--my steak not the best piece of meat I've had; another with a sort of clunky risotto. The best thing was actually a pungent caesar salad starter, but we can't say that's breaking any ground. It was an embarrassment--I felt terribly having brought friends here and forcing them to pay an astronomical sum for dinner. The saving grace was a fabulous bottle of wine (that was actually quite reasonably priced). Perhaps this reflects the changing demographics of the neighborhood, or perhaps it's just management's new very bad vision. But where Diner once represented the best of Brooklyn's 2000s food scene, it now finds itself just like all of its clones: mediocre, predictable, and boring. Just with an even bigger price premium. Do better, Diner. Until then, and it pains me to say it, I won't be back. It hurts to see the fall of such an important institution--for me personally, and for the city as a whole. read more

Refreshing to find a good comfy meal after too many bad experiences in New York. I headed to Williamsburg on a cold Tuesday, December. Christmas coming. Robert Goncalves, the owner of Domaine Wine Bar in Long Island City was praising this restaurant for a long long time. From outside, this restaurant looks like one of those restaurant-diners that I could only find in Montana or North Dakota. But then , when you read the menu and take a first look at a wine list....you might change your mind... Celery root soup, pheasant susage in a pheasant consome, filet mignon with french fries and a apple crumb cake were great dishes, well cooked, satisfiying. Domaine Le Deux Anes from Corbieres was the wine of the night. A blend of Carignan and Grenache Noir this Funky Cold medina has all the poopiness you might expect form a terroir driven importer like Jenny & Francois. I will definitely be back. Kudos for the unusual. interesting and exciting wine list, with nice little bottles from France and Italy. Great place. One little complaint - I wish the stone cold hotties working there would be friendlier and warmer....The winter's here... read more

Coming from Toronto, Diner was high on our list of must-see / experience food places in Brooklyn. Highly recommended by Anthony Bourdain, NY Times article and many highly rates Brooklyn / NYC food blogs, it seemed like a sure thing. Touted as "Non-Pretentious", my experience can definitely say otherwise. I'll start off with the good. -Service was great. Staff were friendly, polite and nice. Zero complaints there. - The atmosphere and location are fantastic. A beautiful space ideal for intimate dining experience. That's about all the good that came from the experience. Here's the bad. As a foodie I can appreciate the menu changing on a daily basis, in fact, I think that's a strong point for this place. However, writing down the menu options on my table's paper place-mat, AND not including a single price for any of the items? That's the definition of PRETENTIOUS. Embarrassingly I asked our server for the prices and she was more than happy to let me know (although I normally wouldn't care, but for the sake of my reviews, the cost of things actually matters). We noticed many people ordered the steak tartar appetizer ($22 - the cost of a main in most places we've eaten in our stay in Brooklyn) so we had high hopes. I was already unsure about everything after paying $10 for a mediocre "craft" beer. But I digress. The tartar came to us and it was easily the worst meal I every had in NYC /Brooklyn in all the times I've been here. The steak part of the dish was completely lost in an over-seasoned mess. The dish tasted more like tabouli than tartar, with strong notes of vinegar and parsley or cilantro overpowering every bite. It came with 4 pieces of toasted bread, one was burnt to a crisp, I was able to knock it on my plate like it was a literal rock. Absolutely disappointing. I wanted to take pictures of it but I was so incredibly disappointed I asked for our bill so we could leave and get a real unpretentious, good meal (and don't worry, we did...elsewhere!) Overall, terrible dining experience from a food-standpoint, and not to mention, my beer, my girlfriend's wine and the (awful) steak tar-tar rounded up to a whopping $56!!! I understand (and appreciate) that gratuity is involved, but if you want to spread the idea that this is a fantastic, un-pretentious, high quality food experience, you've missed the mark on several things. I'll definitely not be returning despite hearing that the brunch there is one of the best, I now have trust-issues with Anthony Bourdain and every food-blog I once read. In my opinion, avoid this place at all costs, for the price you pay, you can go elsewhere and have an abundance of drinks and good food to leave you satisfied. My heart is broken. This was my favorite restaurant at one point. I used to bring my friends and parents and out of town guests, here. I hadn't been in awhile so I scheduled a new date there. I was so excited to share the Diner experience with him. The place was more than half empty. I feel the pain of the other reviewer who gave a more in-depth version akin to my review. Overall the prices, now, completely made my jaw drop. 40$ for most of the main courses. We decided to stay, anyways. And though what we ordered was delicious it wasn't worth as much as we were charged. The streak was small and had veins of gristle through it and was hard to chew. The flavor was slightly bland and the Chimichurri, not as zesty as I've had at other spots. The fish and chips were really good but way overpriced. The steak and fish were both accompanied by fries which were tasty but also not for that price. We ordered less food than we normally would because of the cost and still walked out with a huge bill. To top it off we wanted a little coffee at the end of the night possibly with dessert and there was none to be found. You charge that much for food and you have no coffee in the place?? You're serving desserts like that?!!! I think this place has truly succumbed to it's newer demographic. Rich Bourgeois Hipsters. I'm really sad. Another nice restaurant to go! My husband knows this place from his client and he took me here for a date. It very interesting how they just have a verbal menu and you have to very pay attention because it kindda loud inside, food is delicious and very creative. This place always packed and a line. Everything was made fresh and daily down to their ketchup and mayo. Best white meat fried chicken I've ever had topped with amazing spicy coleslaw. The kale was amazing. Cooked and sautéed so well with a splash of citrus. Their buns, hand made as well, were to die for. read more

Great menu. Never in my life would I have thought I'd be eating beef heart and tongue, and pay for it. I tried it for the first time here, and I liked it. The laid back atmosphere and the cool way they present their menu was nice as well. Their chicken dish was good, it was perfectly spiced and seasoned. After a month of work in the city, including several fabulous meals, this was by far the standout for me. The ambiance is great in this old dining car: intimate, retro. They pour some great cocktails, and the house rose (Terres des Chardons) went perfectly with our dishes. The menu changes daily and there isn't a written dinner menu. Instead, our server read out the day's options, writing down the main ingredient on our paper table cover.
