Hush puppies are complimentary and great to snack on while you peruse the menu. Though it may seem like standard fare, they do put little twists here and there that make the food memorable. The all-you-can-eat seafood fry is a great deal, especially if you start with the scallops-- plump and juicy! The deal is you choose one fried item, then another once you finish the first serving. Came here for dinner. We got the calamari and fried pickles; they were good. They forgot to give us the utensils. The hushpuppies were fried to long and soaked up some oil. I got the Mariner 's Platter (fried shrimps, oysters, scallops, fish, and crab cake). It was good overall. Crab cake was flavorful, wish they were more careful and picked out the shell. I wasn't a fan of the fried scallops. Overall, it was good. The server was friendly, but the service was a bit slow. read more

We were sat immediately. Our server, Ethan, was excellent! He recommended the most delightful crab melt, full of cheese and crab. We also had the fried gator tail bites which were pretty darn good. Definitely freshly fried. My boyfriend had the fried crab lasagna and really enjoyed that. I'm not an expert on hush puppies, but Dirty Dick's has some of the best I've ever tasted. Now onto the rest of the food. I ordered a 1/2 dozen steamed crabs. The server was pretty ambiguous about the size of the crabs, but I went for it anyway. They were small, but I was given 8 instead of 6. For the rest of my party, food was solid all around. I did order the the she-crab soup, which apparently very popular in this area. I don't have a basis for comparison, but it was very creamy and flavorful. My younger son isn't into crab, but enjoyed it as well. Large spacious dining area, but it does get busy; so be prepared to wait during peak meal times. read more

We've eaten here several times over the years, and we've eaten many times at other locations too. I always get the spiced shrimp and it can sometimes be over cooked, but usually still okay. Not this time though. Everything we had was over cooked horribly. the spiced shrimp was mushy it was so over cooked. My wife's chicken tenders where like eating stringed chicken you needed to drink water with to wash it down. Service was okay and our waitress very nice. However, I think we're we're done trying to eat at any Dirty Dick's from now on. Over the years, they're too inconsistent for the money you spend. On our last night in OBX it's my son's birthday. He wanted lobster and crabs and he got to choose the restaurant. We came in around 4pm or so and were sat immediately. We were greeted as soon as we sat down. Our waitress was so sweet and kind! Very attentive. We loved her!! I ordered shrimp and it was some of the best I have had. Walking in, I was a little nervous. The vibes were a little 1990's long John silvers. However, their drinks were the perfect mix of stout and sweet. The hush puppies you get with each meal were a nice choice. They were a little bland and cold as if they had been made a while ago. The steamed shrimp was also lacking a little flavor, however the cocktail sauce made up for it. The fried shrimp was amazing and their French fries were to die for. I liked my fish tacos. I would leave no stars if possible. We had a large party and had a hard time finding a restaurant to accommodate us at the last minute, so we settled on dirty dicks. My expectations were high since we're at the beach... ordering.. *seafood*. However I am typing this review while sitting on my toilet. None of the food was fresh. It all tasted like it had been cooked days before and was barely reheated. Just when we thought it couldn't get worse, a couple of us went to the bathroom to wash our hands - and holy sh*t. If we had seen the state of the bathroom before our meal we would have NEVER eaten here. And the restrooms are a place the business knows the customer is going to see. However, she failed to inform me that a to-go surcharge would be automatically included on my bill and to all to-go orders. Not cool that this was not communicated. We had a really wonderful server, he was the best part of eating here. He said he was here in the outer banks working for the summer. We got the sauteed mussels, she crab soup, louisiana shrimp scampi, and linguine and clams. The soup was too cheesy and thick, but the mussels were pretty tasty, especially with the bread. Wait wasn't too long. Waited long for food but the place was busy. Food options were great, lots to choose from. Even had a sufficient kids menu. I ate the Louisiana Shrimp Scampi and it was excellent! Everything was well priced. Only thing I would change is the womens bathroom was disgusting and there was toilet paper everywhere and it stunk. Day 4 in OBX. Oh Dirty Dick's. Being the Yelp snob that I am, I tried soooo hard to avoid this place. When my dad mentioned it the first time, I looked away and pretended I didn't hear. He said it a second time and I jumped on Yelp to find an alternative and landed on "I Got Your Crabs". But when we rolled into the tiny place to find it full with only bar seats available for the four of us and baby, Dirty Dick's came up a third time. And I could no longer fight it (it's a good reminder that we attract what we most actively reject - deep thought of the day). Funny enough, this turned out to be one of the most enjoyable meals we had in OBX. The complimentary hush puppies were pretty much the best we had during our stay. The gator bites were tender, well-cooked, and according to my dad, better than ones he'd tried in New Orleans (gasp). The steamed Sno Crabs, served with corn and red potatoes, were sweet and plentiful, with three clusters that were enough to share. Mom ordered a "Shrimp Scampi" that was served with multi-colored tortellini instead of the classic angel hair pasta or linguine. Kinda funny but it was delicious, with shrimp the size of my fists. The interior of the restaurant sort of matches the name. Not that it looks dirty - but there is nothing fancy about the place. Plaid tablecloths, doctored pictures of fishermen hung on the wall (with Dick making cameo appearances on all of them), cheesy cardboard cutouts. There's even a little shop with Dirty Dick's merchandise. Not having read all the less-than-stellar reviews though, the family and I really enjoyed our visit here. Half a Dungeness crab was $36 despite the menu saying the portion weight was approximately half a pound. Not even close! Food quality was fine despite the misleading menu. Since I arrived during happy hour, I ordered calamari and mussels - which were 1/2 priced. Calamari was lightly breaded and the sauce the mussels were in was delicious. I was hesitant to come here with three stars. We arrived with a party of about 20 people at dinner time. We were in our seats after about only a 15 minute wait. First the She Crab soup was amazing. It is a creamy crab bisque with a good amount of lump crab meat. The gator bites were crunchy, juicy, and very flavorful. The sauce paired with the bites added that extra tangy kick needed to make them perfect. I got the steak of the day which was a NY strip. The steak was tender, juicy, had a bit of char, and packed full of flavor. The potatoes were also well seasoned and done just right. No hard potato's. The crabby melt was on crispy bread with a crab dip topping. The service was good and food came out in a timely manner. We ate here for early dinner today when we were in town visiting family and then leaving from dinner to drive 1.5hrs home. Within less than 2hrs he was sick and has been all evening. My husband ordered the "tonight's special" the chicken parm sandwich and ended up with food poisoning. I almost ordered this too but when I asked the waitress what made it "New Orleans style" she couldn't answer my question. Restaurant wasn't super clean (food stuck in my menu and dirty plastic table cloth) I opted for the small house salad since I wasn't feeling the vibe. We know dinner here was the cause since everything else we have eaten in the past 24hrs was the same and I'm not sick.
