This place has been here almost 50 years but the laundry side has seen a recent SUPER glow-up. New machines, all of them accept credit now too! They offer affordable wash & fold drop off service too, like $2 a pound for them to just do it for you. Bar has maintained its divey-nostalgic vibes but the stage area has been opened up and the sound system has been replaced and improved. Can't say enough nice about the staff, very welcoming but also no-nonsense when necessary. Shows are incredible, but it's a very chill space to hang out when there aren't. Never have I ever been to a store that features a laundromat and a bar at the same time. My wife said that there was one over in Kent, Ohio but stopping in one is a different experience. I think this is a great store concept and many businesses should follow in this suit. The bar itself is a bit run down but it does have a big cult following. What I think that makes no sense at all is that the prices of the drinks are pretty cheap but I choose a non alcoholic beverage and it costs more than half of the drinks featured on the menu. That makes no sense at all! They accept cash a card. I didn't use the laundromat since I had no clothes to wash nor was I staying near the laundromat part. Staff here was really friendly too though it's dead in the afternoon hours. Highly recommend coming here for their music shows which I hope to do in the near future. Outstanding hours! read more

I can't believe I had never heard of or been to Dirty Dungarees before! I am born & raised just outside of Columbus and I never knew this place existed!! The machines are all new and work like a charm. The owner is a super nice guy and really cares about this place and the patrons. They have a front and back entrance (parking lot on the back side, you can just unload your laundry and go right in). They only accept quarters right now, but they're planning to make it so you can pay with your debit card or with your phone as well. I HIGHLY recommend!! I must rate Dirty Dungarees as well as this because of the concept. It's unlike anything we have ever seen. The mundane weekly task combined with the favorite weekend fun time. It's a laundromat which is not anything notable, except that it has a fucking bar. There are washing machines too which are good if they're functioning, some usually are. I have been past here many times but was hesitant to go in because of the confusion over what exactly this was. It's not a pretty site from the outside, and once in there you won't feel much better. The whole experience turned out much better than expected. It's the novelty factor that makes this a place you have to see at least once. The selection isn't the best but it does have a happy hour at least. As for the washing machines, if they're usable, they're actually pretty cheap and they do the job fairly well. The guy who was at the bar was an interesting character. It sometimes is worth checking out these places just to see who the fuck would come here. There are some pool tables too. I liked Dirty Dungarees more than it seemed possible. It kind of has a charm to it and it's so quirky you have to. The bartender held a conversation with her boss for 5-10 minutes while I sat there making eye contact with her trying to order a drink and never got served. They have "no mixers" other than a vending machine with some pepsi products. the bathroom was foul, I feel like something died in there. the ceiling is falling apart. I've been coming here for years. I've met the owner, Drew, and he's a really, really cool dude. They sometimes host music events and I can hear some weird noise band while I get my sheets done. The bar's fairly cheap and the booze is pretty solid. Everything on the south side of the building is 2-3 stars. I recommend it and enjoy it, especially the staff and owner who always rock. But the laundromat side of things? Well, it's gone a bit downhill. There's a constant funk in the building that smells like every machine has leaked and fermented for a couple months. About half of all the coin machines are out of order and one of the coin machines is straight up broken. This is a year or two after they replaced a bunch of the broken dryers. Now, of the working ones, there's only a 60% chance you'll singe anything in a load you put in there.There are occasional ceiling leaks and cracked and dusty floor tiles everywhere you step. The bathrooms are absolutely worse and if you feel the need to use them, you're better off going to Ledo's or Space Bar next door. Today I showed up, parked my car next to a spot that was reserved with a dead rat. I don't blame the staff for not picking it up, there is only one person on staff at all times and they are essentially utilized to babysit the bar. This means that they don't have the ability to really spend time cleaning the place or doing maintenance that other laundromats will do. For instance, if you go to Clintonville Coin Laundry down the street, the attendant there will be constantly performing tasks like fulfilling laundry orders for people who dropped off or just tidying up, wiping down, cleaning machines etc. Not so at Dirty Dungarees. Their valuables are behind a bar that's too easy to access for the average drunk. So they have to sit there and let the rest of the business, the part that arguably sees more customers, slip into disrepair. Anyway, I show up, ask the attendant about the rat in the parking lot and offer to pick it up if they provide gloves and a trash bag. I was provided with 1 clean glove, 1 dirty glove and a normal trash liner and completed the task so nobody had to look at the poor creature. Meanwhile, the bartender had to stay behind the bar to tend to patrons. If I were getting paid to do more work, I'd gladly have helped to clean up the place too, but no I was actually giving them my money today. What did I get out of it? My laundry came out smelling worse than when it went in and, surprisingly, slightly hairier. Yes, it gained hair from the washing machines. Now, I've mentioned their dryers and rather than risk fusing my work clothes together into a carbonized lump, I decided to take my wet clothes down to Clintonville Coin Laundry, a laundromat that usually makes me spend more per machine and swap between dollar coins and quarters halfway through, just to get my laundry to not smell dirty. I actually had to wash the hoodie I had brought to Dirty Dungarees as well because it had picked up the ambient funk of the building. After washing my hands a few more times, I felt like I was able to finish the chore without transferring the smell to my fresh clothes while folding them. So let's sum it up. This is a bar I like within walking distance of my house with an owner I love and staff who are fun and as helpful as they can be. But this is also a place that is so derelict that they can't even run their vending machines full time because they'll make screeching sounds and you'll have to take you clothes somewhere else in order to clean them. This place needs to admit that it's 2 businesses in one and hire another attendant to care for the laundry side of the business while someone tends bar. And if they can't do that, I don't know what they can do to get me back. I've lost a lot of perfectly good clothes to this place. I've tried loving it so much. But Damn. The idea of idly sipping a beer and shooting some pool while you wait for your laundry to run its course in the next room is one that gets my full on endorsement, but Dirty Dungarees itself does not. The beer is cheap and the staff is relatively helpful, but those factors do little to overcome the laundry list (rimshot, please!) of idiosyncrasies that made me dread my weekly trips to this North Campus rathole. Although there's a respectable number of machines to choose from here to wash your clothes in, it's incredibly rare that more than 2/3 of them are working at any given time. Not a problem if you're there in the early afternoon, but if you do laundry after dinner time like most of the people that come here often do, you're likely to be waiting to use one of the dryers that line the north wall of the lobby area. There are literally twice as many washers as there are driers here, and although the driers are twice the seize and can purportedly handle a double load, don't count on having your clothes be completely dry until they've been in there for at least half an hour. I normally wouldn't mind waiting around while surfing the net on my laptop or reading a book even, but the hitch is that the wifi here rarely ever works. Don't bother asking whoever's working behind the counter for help; they most likely will not have any idea what you're talking about. The location of Dirty Dungarees is truly the double-edged sword that it frequently falls upon. It's located far enough from campus that it doesn't;t get overrun by a deluge of college students every evening, but what it does have a problem with is the rotating cast shady characters that the staff has to kick out every half hour. If you haven't panhandled while sitting here minding your own business at least once, you certainly are a luckier man/woman than I. It's also common to see the same guy coming in every night grabbing stray socks and other clothing items that've been left behind and then making a dash for the door. What he does with them is anyone's guess. Maybe that's why Dirty Dungarees has a bar: strong drink is probably the only way anyone can put up with the headache you'll get from spending more than an hour here. After upgrading to an apartment on the other side of campus, I'm happy to say that I'm no longer one of them. read more

There've been a couple of occasions when i came here simply to do laundry and ended up drinking two or three pitchers of beer with my laundry mate. It was cheap to do that, and as time went on the repartee between the bartenders, other patrons, and my friend and i became more enjoyable. Funny thing about alcohol. The machines are good when they work (a couple of months ago i began to wonder if they didn't have money to fix them, because the wounded soldiers kept multiplying). The dryers are effective and feel like the less financially demanding part of the laundry excursion, because you can (at least) double load them. The parking at the back of the building is handy. I can't say I actually used the facilities- the service was so awful that I walked out and went down the street to Clintonville Coin-Op laundry. I have never been to a laundromat before (I was lucky enough to have in-house laundry throughout college), so I called ahead and asked if I could pay with a credit card. The dude on the phone said "No, but we do cash back". On top of the service, it was extremely grungy inside. I don't think it makes sense to take your clothes to a filthy place to get them clean. (Enter my rant about awful service, please skip if you don't want to read my whining) I walked in and stood there for a few minutes, watching the most stereotypical hipster walk around, ignoring everyone while talking on the phone behind the bar. Think ass-length dreads, wayfarer glasses, tight jeans, plaid shirt, bandanna around dreads. He then walked up to me, phone still to his ear and just looked at me. I asked to do cash back. He said "We don't do that" I asked "Are you serious?" He said yes. When I lived in the Short North, I took my laundry to Suds'n'Java. The first few times I did laundry after moving up north, I went back there. But some months back I learned that Dirty Dungarees offers a drop off service as well. Go ahead and call me lazy, but I hate doing laundry. If I can pay someone else to do it, I'm gonna do it. Well, until I get my own W/D anyhow. Now, I've been to a few laundromats that weren't all dingy, but Suds and Dirty Dungarees both are. Dirty Dungarees has a leg up by serving beer. Hah. It's drop off service is far cheaper as well. Even cheaper with coupons available online at their website. If that weren't enough, they also have a loyalty program type deal where every fifth drop off is friggin' free. I hate, hate, hate this place, and I used to live close enough to walk to it.. with my laundry. Even though it was super convenient, I would load all my stuff into my car and cart it all to another laundromat by campus... this other laundromat was more expensive, but at least I didn't feel like I had to step over drunks in the parking lot, endure a few hours of a sneering bartender, whose unpleasantness leaked over from the bar to the laundry side (see Melisa C.'s review for a very good description of this woman), and worry about the evil change machine eating my hard earned cash. The machines are often broken, they very frequently have gunk in them, the floor is the grossest thing ever... i always felt like I needed to clean the clothes I was wearing after I left this place. So my problem with this place was not that my clothes didn't get clean, they did. However, my washing machine randomly stopped working and the one guy working gave me a hard time about it. Um how and why would I take time off my own machine? He knew I wasn't lying because I used a free wash coupon and he started the machine for me. This worker was just crazy. I didn't know what he was trying to say to me half the time and the other half of the time I just didn't know how to respond, so uncomfortable. The place is kind of a dump and kind of shady. I swear at least 3 people had to have the worker give them free time on a dryer because their original dryer stopped working. So to sum up, I came here because I had coupons for a free wash and dry (as a broke college kid how could I pass that up?) and I will come back as long as those coupons continue to be printed in UWeekly. This is the kind of place that a hipster or an alcoholic would love. Me, not so much. The only reason I ever ventured over here (three times, the count is, I think--maybe four) was the relatively late hours that DD's keeps. Until recently, my husband was working a crazy overnight weekend shift and our days didn't start until later in the day. The bartenders have ranged from completely indifferent to completely rude. The machines are ancient and occasionally don't work properly; when this is the case, expect to get attitude from the bartender, who is also in charge of helping you with your laundry issues. The people behind the bar seem to be mostly interested in not venturing out from behind the bar unless the situation is absolutely dire. One bit of weirdness: I wanted to get a soda out of the machine that they have (to keep from having to interact with the bartender), but there was no indication on the machine how much the soda cost. Something, I forget what now, actually led me to wonder if the machine even worked--I assumed that it would just by virtue of the fact that it was there, but I wasn't thirsty enough to ask and risk the bored, apathetic sneer that I would likely get. Having a bar/laundry facility is a cute little concept, but if you don't focus on the laundry part of the deal--including customer service for laundry patrons--you may as well just convert the whole thing into a crappy bar rather than a crappy bar/laundry combo. read more

The bar offered a decent selection of beer and liquors on hand (BONUS). There are also a few pool tables so you can get your pool on while you wait. I'm not a student, nor do I have any need for a laundromat anymore (thank goodness), but if I WERE a student, and if I DID need a laundromat, I would probably give Dirty Dungarees a try. Location is good for the OSU kiddos. So why was I even here in the first place? Because there's a really funny bar in here. I've been here for novelty purposes twice. Each time it has been memorable and noteworthy. The first time, the "attendant" (not really a bartender) was super into his homework and talking about all his homework. All out of mixers, straight liquor only. The second time was a little better stocked. We had a group of about 12 folks and we took this place over. I've never seen anyone else other than the people I'm with. This might be the perfect location for a kitschy birthday party -- decent space for a group and I guarantee you won't have to rent it out. Drinks, though nothing fancy (you'd be lucky to get a squeeze of lemon), are very affordable. 1 - 2 stars for the quality of this place as a legit bar. I actually had a pretty decent time at Dirty Dungarees, but mainly because I was in such a good mood that the casual harassment from the deeply strange country dude and the incredibly, incredibly world-weary bartender struck me as kind of hilarious instead of just irritating. The laundromat side: only one coin machine works, and it is both slow and cranky. The actual machines seemed fine and are priced average, so no complaints there-- apparently some of them don't work, but as it wasn't crowded when I went finding a working one was no problem. They sell detergent. What do you want from me, this is a laundromat, as long as it isn't filthy it's hard to mess it up too badly. The bar side: pool tables and classic arcade games are a nice diversion while waiting for laundry. The alcohol is cheap-ish. The bartender was a dread-wearing dude who seemed unbelievably put upon by a request for a gin and tonic. //Long stare. "No tonic. We have Sprite." "Er, Sprite then, please?" Long, long stare. This place is decent. It's not nearly as new and sanitary feeling as the Blue Bubble one block closer to campus, but it is *much* cheaper, they have a *very* affordable bar, and there's much more space to find a spot to study while your clothes are being washed. In the 4 times I've been there, I've never had a washer or dryer conk out me, and the change machine has actually given me a couple extra quarters. Also, with a buckid, you get BOGO on washers. You just need to ask the bartender, and he'll activate one of the same size as what you're paying for. Overall, yes it's a bit grungy but definitely worth it, in my experience. HOWEVER, because Blue Bubble does feel so much cleaner, and there feels like less of a risk to my clothes (due to old washers & dryers), and I'm not tempted to get a beer (no matter how inexpensive it is), it does feel like a bit of a toss-up between the two. read more

DD switches back and forth between a hipster bar (not surprising consider the location) and an older blue-collar bar picked up and plopped down here straight out of Franklinton. It's usually a mix of both and despite the lack of ambiance (it is first and foremost a laundromat, after all) and sometimes being too empty I can't complain about their $3, 20 oz bock on draught. Extremely rude staff. I just moved from NY. Back home using a laundromat at any hour of the day or night is not weird. Apparently in OH it is. Came in right around 10:00pm, set clothes down and wondered around the establishment to see if there was an ATM. A staff member informed me that since it was not busy his intention was to close the laundry side (nowhere on their website does it say the laundry may not operate as late as the bar). He then sarcastically stated that there was obviously no way I might have wanted to to do laundry this late and that there is no reason for me to be wondering around the laundry area. I informed him that I was looking to see if they had an ATM and he told me that I guess I have to leave until I find one (very rudely and with no suggestions as to where, even though I later saw one not more than 100 ft from there). When one moves a long way from home, there are certain things that he must find in order to make his living around. The bank was easy enough to find; I had my choice of buildings downtown. There was no problem finding my choice of restaurants and shopping -- everything I could ever need was right off Interstate 71 (or for a real adventure, navigating the outer belt for your shopping needs can lead to entertaining stories ... but more about that another time). The only problem I had was finding a laundromat. The roommate I lived with was useless as far as finding these things went; he went home to do his laundry, and had no problems telling me I was out of luck when it came to his help (despite the fact he had lived here all his life). The sum of my girlfriend's experiences was much the same -- why go out to do laundry when you could do it for free at home? I found myself in an imposition -- stuck to let my fingers take a hike in the yellow pages, or try to hitch a ride on the information superhighway to find my way back home. And after one laundromat experience at one of the many tan-and-launder facilities in town (coming from California, I had no clue these things existed!), I decided I needed something more in my laundry experience. That is how I found Dirty Dungarees...or if you're savvy with the locals, The Wishy-Washy. At first look, The Wishy-Was--er, Dirty Dungarees looks like something out of a bad news report of where a bar fight began. You'll have to be careful navigating the traffic on High Street, so for best access I suggest turning east down Duncan, and making the right down the alley. Waking in the back door, you'll get a good overview of what the place is about -- a full-service laundromat takes up the majority of it, with a full-service bar to your left. The liquor sales helps to keep the costs down; a load of laundry will cost you $2.75 at most. While the washing machines aren't the greatest of quality, they do the job. At any given time, most of the machines are open, and there's never usually a wait to get in and get on your way -- the ones that aren't working are clearly marked. And should something go wrong, just ask one of the people behind the bar -- they'll be happy to help you out. Walking into the bar is seemingly something out of a sitcom. While the bar is empty most of the time, you'll always be able to jump into a conversation with some of the locals sitting towards the end. Pull up a bar stool, and you'll be treated more like a friend than anything else by the staff and other patrons. Wi-Fi is available, but like the jukebox in "Happy Days," it takes a nudge from The Fonz (or one of the bartenders in back) to get it back in working order. I personally go in on Sundays to track my fantasy football team -- which becomes more of a spectator sport once everyone around you gets into the games. Dirty Dungarees also brags one of the biggest (and best) happy hours in the greater University area -- $4.00 will buy you a pitcher of Bud or Bud Light between 4:00 and 9:00 PM every day. For 50 cents more, you can get a pitcher of Amber Bock...but I personally recommend the Budweiser (Proudly brewed right here in Columbus, Ohio). The double-capacity dryers help to keep the costs and time down -- one load of laundry should take you between 70 and 90 minutes to complete (based on how much laundry you have to do)...which is more than enough time to finish your pitcher, debate the news or football with the locals, and be on your way. All-in-all, the Wishy-Washy (d/b/a Dirty Dungarees) isn't any of the bars you'll find in the Arena District...but it doesn't want to be. Much like the name suggests, its the down home, working class place to wash their clothes and have a drink in a friendly and safe place. With both businesses keeping the costs down all around, you are sure to have a good experience that will have you keep coming back for more. Dirty Dungarees has my highest credentials for a great place to relax at the end of the day.
