This is the Bears year! From the defense being absolutely dominant to Mitch really starting to come into his own, we have a great chance to make a run for sure! When deciding where to go for the annual holiday meal, Ditka's seemed like the only true option. After all, one of the greatest bears legends ever graced the halls of the place and built it with his own two paws. Christmas was great, the new year was on the horizon, and we needed to end the year with a bang. After passing by the large sign countless time and dreaming that some day we would enter into the abyss that is Ditka's, it was finally time. I forgot to put pomade in my hair so the wind was definitely a factor when it came to the overall volume and structure of my beautiful mane. We walked through the revolving door and I had to prevent myself from staying inside for another go around. After exiting the surprise amusement park ride, I had to adjust my locks and make sure I looked professional. We were seated immediately in the middle of the room, which was nice because I was able to get a 360 degree view, making sure there wasn't any surprises that I wasn't aware of. Our waiter treated us soon after being seated and he was just wonderful. He was witty and helpful, basically listing off the entire menu with suggestions of his favorite dishes when asked. I passed on the first round of beers because I was still working on riding myself of the hangover that I had acquired from the night previous. The steaks on the menu were still a rich mans game even on the lunch menu, so I had to look elsewhere. I pondered in thought as I viewed the list of foods, and eventually decided to choose the prime rib sandwich. By the time I made this decision, it was time to get in on the beer, because I check my watch and it said Miller time. Our waiter came out with three beers, one for myself and the other two for some of my colleagues. He poured one normally into a frosty glass, but performed some wizardry with the next two, pouring both at the same time with one hand. I felt like I was at the cirque du sole, and had no idea we'd be getting dinner and a show. Shortly after, the appetizers we ordered came out. The coconut shrimp was placed on a bed of boom boom sauce or something like that, and the calamari came with cocktail and tartar sauces. The calamari was good, but lacked flavor in the light breading it was encompassed by. The shrimp was absolutely outstanding. The crispy crust was packed with flavor, and the sauce seemingly punched me in the face, giving me a concussion of deliciousness. I took some of the residual sauce and dipped my calamari into it, boosting the tastiness of the squid tenfold. It only took about 15 minutes for our entrees to reach our table, and I was blown away. The prime rib was sliced thin and piled higher than my hopes for the bears this season. It was topped with beautifully sautéed onions and mushrooms dancing in a subtle horseradish sauce, who were tucked into bed by a blanked of melty cheese. On the side came Parmesan truffle fries, which I had to pay an extra fee to experience. After my first bite, I believe I was experiencing nirvana. The prime rib was so tender and flavorful, I finally felt like I was visiting flavortown in the passenger seat of Guy Fieri's convertible. The fries were underwhelming, so that was disappointing. They were just soggy and tasted almost the same as the regular fries, making the extra few dollars we spent on them feel like a waste. We finished and just when I thought we were ready to leave, made the mistake of looking at the dessert menu. Not to say the desserts were bad in any sense of the word, but it was going to put me over the edge. We decided on the banana cream pie and the cheesecake. They were delivered with a gorgeous presentation that was destroyed by us heathens sitting at the table within minutes. After the meal, I did some meditation to truly see what it would be like being Mike Ditka in his own restaurant. Would I be happy with the service and food that I consumed that day? The answer to these and all my other self proposed questions was of course absolutely. I almost went out and bought a bears sweater vest, and I would have had I not been half unconscious on my couch. I can't wait for the day I can someday meet Coach Ditka and shake his hand, thanking him not only for the success he brought the bears, the success he brought to the film industry in the cinematic classic "Kicking and Screaming," but also the success he brought to the restaurant industry with Ditka's. Everything he touches turns to gold, and I would someday love to shake his hand so I too could turn to gold. Thank you coach, Super Bears Super Bowl!!!
