I give Dixie Q 3 stars which means A-OK. This is a barbecue restaurant from the same owner and chef, Scott Serpas, of Serpas in Old Fourth Ward. I'm a fan of Serpas and think the food is excellent there, so I had somewhat high expectations for Dixie Q. Like Serpas, some of the dishes at Dixie Q have a Louisiana influence (that's where the chef is from). I do think this place is worth checking out if you like barbecue. The restaurant opened in November 2017 in the old Slice of Brookhaven building next to the Village Place Brookhaven mixed-use development. It's hidden off the main drag (Dresden). Parking is tight. They've got a small surface lot, but it can only fit about 8 cars. If you can't find parking in Dixie Q's lot, I recommend street parking on Caldwell. The building has been renovated and it's got a new, fresh look. They've added an extension to the side of the building (it looks like a shipping container) and a smoker. The dining room has a completely open layout made up of mostly tables with some high-tops (no booths), a retractable door that opens up to a patio, a wraparound bar, TVs, and an open kitchen. This isn't a very big place. I guesstimate the interior can seat about 60 people. The menu includes pork, brisket, sliced turkey, St. Louis pork ribs, house-smoked sausage, smoked wings, Southern sides, and desserts like pecan brown sugar vanilla bread pudding and Nutella pudding with whipped cream and a cookie. Like other barbecue joints, you can get most meats served as a sandwich. In addition, Dixie Q offers BBQ bowls featuring ingredients like arugula, quinoa, and dried cranberries for those opting to go a healthier, non-traditional route. During our visit, prices were $9-15 for a plate/sandwich with 1 side and $11.50-26.00 with 2 sides. Sides were $2.00-4.50 a la carte, BBQ bowls $9 each (+$5-6 to add a meat), and desserts $5 each. There was also a $6 kids menu. Here's what we went with: * 1/2 dozen smoked jumbo wings, "crystal honey" ($9) * Pork plate with Creole coleslaw ($9.50) * House-smoked sausage plate with Camellia red beans and rice and cornbread ($12) * Meat combo - pork and brisket (sliced) with baked mac and collard greens ($16) Overall, not bad. Each plate came with a slice of buttered toast and 3 sweet and sour pickles. My favorites were the wings and the brisket. In our 1/2 dozen wings order, 5 were drumettes while only 1 was a flat. It would've been nice if we got half and half drumettes and flats, but not a big deal. The wings were nicely smoked and grilled, meaty, and had good flavor to them. They came with a side of what I think was a relatively thin blue cheese ranch dipping sauce. On the menu, the brisket is described as "chopped brisket," but you can get it sliced too. That's how I ordered mine. The portion size on the brisket was generous. I got several thick, lean slices. The meat had decent flavor and texture. It wasn't too fatty, which I liked, though I wish I had gotten more skin. I thought the pork was OK. It's pulled by default. "Pulled" here means thick, chunky strands with yummy bits of charred outer edges. Some sections of meat were a little dry and tough, but nothing a lot of barbecue sauce couldn't fix. As for the sauces, they had 2 sauces and a vinegar-based hot sauce. The 2 sauces were original and fire and smoke. The sauces were fine. I didn't prefer one over another. The house-smoked sausage was a bit of a letdown. Unlike the brisket and even the pork, the portion size on the sausage felt a bit meager. Three small pieces of sausage were served on our plate. I think maybe one more would have been good. The sausage was alright in terms of taste and texture, though it could have used more flavor. Of the sides, my favorite was the collard greens. The leafy greens were chopped nice and small (not tiny, but small), cooked with several bits of pork. The greens had great flavor. I like how they had a lot of vinegar already added. Normally, I have to douse it onto the greens myself. As a fan of collards, I really enjoyed these. I'm not sure what made the Creole coleslaw Creole. It tasted like standard Southern mayo-based slaw to me, though it was light on the dressing. The cabbage and carrots were coarsely shredded and there was a little pepper/seasoning in there too. I liked the Camellia red beans and rice. Camellia refers to Camellia Brand red kidney beans which originated in New Orleans. Some people might get thrown off by the soupy, mushy texture, but I thought they were good. This was perhaps my second favorite side. The cornbread and baked mac and cheese were A-OK. The cornbread almost looked like a griddled slice of pound cake. It had a delectable thin crust on three sides. The mac and cheese utilized somewhat big noodles with a creamy, rich cheese. If you like mac and cheese, this one is worth ordering. Service was terrific. The staff was friendly and attentive and our orders came out lightning quick. read more

Great local bbq joint in Brookhaven. Can eat inside or outside. Very friendly and accommodating staff. I love all different kinds of bbq pulled pork. Solid BBQ! I came on a Friday night and it wasn't a huge crowd, we were greeted and sat immediately. It's definitely a little cozy on the inside but I noticed they have a great outdoor patio space as well. We ordered the sliced brisket with Cajun fries & pulled pork sandwich with Mac n cheese and red beans & rice with cornbread. The meat was cooked perfectly! I have nothing to complain about. Their BBQ sauce at the table tasted pretty good with everything. The Mac n cheese was decent but not rave worthy. The red beans and rice were just okay to me and the fries were nice and crispy! Oh and the cornbread was really good. Great selection of drinks on the menu, I had a tasty Margarita! Service was awesome, Bobby was very attentive and great with recommendations. I went Dixie Q for the first time tonight. I was in the area so I thought I would try somewhere different. I ordered the combo plate(pork & ribs). I wasn't impressed. Both the meat items had a very high sodium taste. To the point that salt was all I could taste. Also the pork was too high on fat content. Especially for the price I paid, $30+ with tax & tip. I did not care for their bbq sauce selections. The have two choices. Both are a little thin. 1. Hot & smoky 2. I forget what the call the other but it is there version of a regular bbq sauce. Again to thin and too sweet. I prefer a thinker (Memphis style). Their French fries are outstanding. I also had the baked Mac. The mac was just ok. For better quality and better taste I like DBA bbq on Highland in Virginia Highlands or Community Q in Decatur. read more

We liked the brisket plate, pork sandwich, meat combo (with pork and wings). Everyone enjoyed their meals. The baked mac was really good, the Brussels sprouts were amazing, and the fries were pretty good. The brisket was just okay. Would not recommend the bread pudding--nothing special. Our first visit, we will be back! Great food. fast, friendly service! Weather was perfect so we sat outside on the deck. Very clean. The food is fresh, they smoke all their meat daily and they use locally sourced produce. They have a full bar. We shared the OG Salmon Chips - house smoked salmon, chipotle cream cheese, red onion & capers on house made potato chips (piucured) they are a little pricey at $16 for 5 servings but are piled high with fresh salmon so we weren't disappointed. Wow!!! We placed a very large to go order from here on a Friday night and it was not only fulfilled really quickly, but accurately too! Everything we ordered was delicious and very flavorful. I loved the Brussels sprouts- they are a must in my opinion. The sides of fries were a generous portion and had a unique seasoning to them. The pulled pork was a generous portion, and the ribs were tender and also flavorful. FYI paying the upcharge to change one of the meats to ribs only got us a few pieces. I likely won't do that again as I think it is a better value to just order a half rack of ribs. Pretty darn good if I must say so myself. The parking was plentiful as a coworker and I entered the premises!! Walking in there I was embraced with aromas of good cooking....but it was not so clean!! The fries were also good with the cajun seasoning. My wife had the pulled pork which she thought was just ok but she loved the Brussel sprouts. I had the Grilled Cheese Brisket and it was the best thing I have ever tasted. Although it is a bit on the heavy side, I enjoyed it so much. The brisket was so soft and juicy. The staff are incredibly rude and just ridiculous. I called on a Sunday, one hour before closing which I figured was enough time. All I needed was a simple pick up order for Mother's Day and a lot of people were depending on me for this meal. The first time I called, I was placed on hold for 7 minutes, the second time I called I was placed on hold for 10 minutes, and the third time was 5 minutes. I called three more times, and got sent to voicemail and once I got hung up on. I got pissed and went to drive over to order in person. I spent over 20 minutes on the phone when I could have just gone there in less time. On the way there, I called again and Josh was nice enough to take my order and he was surprised that I was put on hold for so long. He said they were busy. I finally got in my order, and it was ready in only 10 minutes. I walked inside to find they were only two people dining. And there was only one other pick up order. Seriously ridiculous. 5 star service. 4 star music/vibe. 3 star BBQ. The star of the show was our server, Corwin, along with the host and other staff. Everyone was friendly, welcoming and hardworking. The music was mostly throwback R&B and pop - perfect for a Friday night week unwind. The restaurant was busy and seating was self-serve. I ordered the 2 meat plate with sausage, pulled pork and potato salad. The potato salad was delish. The pork was greasy and the sausage overcooked. The biggest disappointment was the garlic bread which had very little flavor or butter. I took the white chocolate bread pudding to-go but stole a couple bites of the freshly warmed goodness before hitting the road. For openers, if you think the best barbecue is usually found in the worst part of town, in a place with bars on the windows, and just enough grease on the table to your initials - then this isn't it. If, on the other hand, you're in one of the close-in Atlanta suburbs looking for some good 'cue, then you may want to give Dixie Q Barbecue a try... but that depends on how important the two "Ss" of barbecue are to you. More about that in a few lines. For a guy who has spent a lifetime in pursuit of the perfect barbecue (read my more than 120 barbecue reviews from across the country on Yelp), Dixie Q (founded by a chef a lot of people who don't by definition enjoy barbecue know about it) is an interesting paradox. First the good news: the meats range from very good to excellent. Nice bark, moist, great rubs and, most important, they really taste good. Personally I'm not sure whether we enjoyed thew ribs or the brisket more. The ribs were tender, but none of that "fall off the bone" nonsense that usually means they've been over cooked, under the heat lamp too long, or, worse yet, baked or parboiled before being slathered in sauce and served. The brisket has that thin layer of fat that assures full flavor, as opposed to those who trim it away (healthier they rationalize), trimming away all the smoke flavor that fat captures and meat doesn't. Sliced just right. Really good. The pork came in handfulls complete with the outer bark - giving them a bit of crunch. Good. Very. Sides? You want to know about sides? Go for the salted French fries; world class. The Brussels sprouts were very good if you think that sort of thing belongs on the menu at a barbecue joint, and the slaw was just standard issue. Now for the rub (not that on the meat). It's the two Ss... Sauce and Service. Maybe it's because of the pandemic, but the sauce comes in a tiny thimble size plastic cup... two kinds, spicy and not, and hardly enough to cover more than a fork or two. That's the quantity issue; the other issue is the quality. Sauces are a matter of taste, whether it be Big Bob Gibson's white sauce over in Alabama, Arthur Bryant's gritty paprika spiced sauce in Kansas City, or Fatt Matt's pungent (always served warm) sauce in Atlanta - the good ones always have a memorable taste. A zip. Dixie Q's sauce falls short., It's clearly a mix of catsup, brown sugar, a few spices, and, get ready for this, Coca Cola. Coke and Dr. Pepper are key ingredients in a number of sauces you can find online, but at Dixie Q the end result is an off-taste, thin, bland concoction that detracts from the meat. The second S is for Service. Sharp restaurant operators know that regardless how good their good may be, folks don't come back if the service is bad... The Brown Shoe Gourmet has been to Dixie Q three times. The first, the server was tops; she made recommendations, kept the tea glasses filled and could not have been more friendly. The second trip, one of us had to get up to find the waitress twice to get refills etc. The last time, the one prompting this review, the server seemed to be operating under the assumption that he was doing us a favor by taking our order and money. Aloof . Arrogant. Take your choice. There are a ton of good barbecue places in metro Atlanta these days... not many of them have a Big 3 (ribs, pulled prk and brisket) as good as Dixie Q, but most all of them have a memorable full flavored sauce as well as accomodating servers who understand whose money pays their salary. Went today and ordered a Sweetwater 420 and it was very cold in a cold mug. Got a pulled pork sandwich and a side of potato salad. The pulled pork is some of the best I have had. There was a lot of meat on the sandwich. It had great flavor. The highlight of the sandwich was how moist the pork was. The original sauce was very good. The potato salad had just the right amount of onion, mayo, etc. Highly recommend these menu items. Highly recommend this place. I will be back. The outside is great but unfortunately right now the flies are bad. So recommend sitting inside. read more

I'm still trying to get a feel for this place. Ran into it one day as I was randomly driving. Went back a few days later to try it out and had the brisket sandwich and fries. Let me say this. The prices were definitely worth trying the place out and the brisket was pretty tasty. The home cut potato fries were awesome! Food was ok. Overall rating affected by our car getting sideswiped in the parking lot while parked. Mind you there were only (3) cars ( well spaced out from each other) when we parked. Management says cameras facing the parking lot are active. Management stated they can run the footage for the time period we dined to determine who hit the car. When questioned again, it appears they changed their tone, and became a bit coy when questioned about the video footage. Should be fairly easy to determine the culprit - empty restaurant with 3 cars in the parking lot (including ours) and we were there for a little over an hour. Disappointing on a Friday night ,the ribs were dry , the Mac and cheese did not taste good . I ate it but mentioned it did not taste right . I got a to go order for my roommate and he did not eat it , it turned out it was spoiled, not fresh . I have been there several times and it's been good so wondering what's going on . Change of owner? I know if Mr Serpas was there he would not be Serving that Mac and cheese. For the price you pay it's not unreasonable to ask that the food be fresh. read more

How excited where we to see a new place go into this spot? And a BBQ joint at that! What a great addition to the neighborhood! Hubby and I went for lunch. The place was mostly empty and getting a parking space in the small lot was very easy. The cashier was super friendly and helpful with menu recommendations. I selected the camp fire Caesar bowl with chopped brisket and hubby got the combo plate of sausage and sliced brisket with collards and chips. The Caesar salad was really good - it was a huge portion of salad (could be easily split between two people) and the chili croutons were delicious. I'm not really sure that brisket was the best choice I could have made as the beefy flavor really didn't jive with the Caesar. No worries - I had an extra piece of Texas toast so I just took the brisket off, put it on my bread, and added some of the house BBQ spicy sauce and ate that instead. Admittedly, I'm a brisket snob. Hubby stumbled upon prime brisket for $2.59/lb at Costco recently and it was heaven on earth. Its hard to for any brisket to compete with that, but I will say I thought Dixie Q's was good! The sausage was the star of the show for me. Housemade sausage is always a gamble but Dixie Q's is on point. Highly recommend. We also ordered mac & cheese to go for our daughter. It looks exactly like Community Q's, which is the best mac & cheese in town. Its REALLY good, but not as good as Community Q's. They've added a different cheese and/or spices to the cream. I had the pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw. I loved the sandwich, but the slaw was a bit much as I ate it separately. However, I began mixing some slaw in with bites of the sandwich and enjoyed it a lot more that way. Service was good, and the place was clean and comfortable. I'm a BBQ snob, connoisseur, and fanatic. I feel Dixie Q is fantastic for what are most important for a bbq restaurant (1. Food, 2. Price, 3. X factors). Move over Fox Bros! The people at Dixie Q were very nice. They let my girlfriend and me attend a friends and family event the first week before they were open just because we walked up to the front door. Complementary meal was just a testament to their character. The food is great. Being a DIY bbq guy, I know how difficult it is to make great southern smoked meats - Dixie Q is on point. The brisket is great - fatty, juicy slices. The wings are also plump, juicy, and the sauce is the right amount of spice/flavor. The potato salad is one of the best I've had (bacon accents). The baked Mac is also a solid choice. I will say I wasn't enamored with the Cajun slaw, but I'm not a big slaw guy in general. The pulled pork is juicy, flavor filled, and has a little bit of bark that's awesome. See below pics on things we've tried. I'm most interested to try the ribs next as the staff say that is one of their favorites. The price was super affordable and high value for the amount of food we were served (see pics). I got my girlfriend a pork sandwich plate with one side + a two meat plate and two sides + a beer for me for $31. I honestly couldn't ask for better prices. I think the X factor is that it's in the heart of Brookhaven - which is lacking elite restaurants. Also the owners seem like very nice people- they stopped by our table the second time we came to give my girlfriend a free beer. In general the place is good and has a good vibe. The chopped brisket had a lot of fat chopped (hidden) within it. The salmon was overcooked and dry. I do believe their barbecue and ribs are OK based on previous visits to Dixie Q. They have good service and have a good following. They have a full liquor program and beer of course. There were some folks placing orders for catering, for over 100 people so I would assume they've had great experiences. I think this place is good if you just stick to regular pulled pork barbecue. read more

Ok, so I was amazed at the level of service I received here today. Clearly they are under staffed, as most businesses seem to be these days. What a pro, didn't get the guys name, but he was all over, greeting, cleaning, assisting the service, in front of multi tasking, was really, amazing! Great job! As far as the food, definitely worth a visit! Sauce is good flavor and beef brisket is not Kansas City 'choice' beef brisket, could use a little more Smokey flavor, but not too many places here in the south do. Wow! I've tried this place almost every time I've visited my family here in Atlanta. It's always been decent. I've tried the brisket and sausage previously. But the Mac and cheese is truly to die for. On this visit I opted for the half rack of ribs...it was truly exceptional! You didn't even need to add any bbq sauce or was so flavorful! And I still had about half leftover in the end. I've never seen ribs so huge! It will definitely become by regular order from now on. And seriously you NEED to try this Mac and cheese. Another great lunch! I try to come around when they first open and today we hit the nail on the head! We got the first slices of brisket and the ribs were just pulled off (for my to go order) and everything was amazing and seasoned well! We got great service from Sequoia as always! Wow! From walking in the cozy front door, the warm welcome from staff and the owner, then we smelled what we just knew was going to be some GREAT BBQ! The pulled pork is full of crispy bark, adding so much flavor that we didn't even need or want to add the choices of sauce on the table. The house made sausage was amazing. I love smoked Turkey, it's hard to find good Turkey at a BBQ joint, it's always dried out, but not at Dixie Q. It was mouth watering delicious. The potions are huge, the sides are perfection. We started with the smoked salmon chips, covered in capers and red onion, and I highly recommend those! Beautiful presentation on every plate. And my husband said the Brunswick stew is the best around. The service was outstanding. Maya was our server and she was honest and helpful and a joy to have. We just happened to stumble on this little gem today, and let me promise you it has already become our GO TO place for BBQ in Atlanta. The owner was there and he let me try the homemade pickles and they were amazing too! Don't forget to ask for the house made peppered vinegar to add to the meat and sides... it's sooooo good!
