Picture a mom and pop cafe in the heart of a southern town filled with delicious food and staff with true southern hospitality. That pretty much describes Dixie. It is set in downtown Petersburg not too far from I95 and ten minutes from Fort Lee. I found it via Yelp and gave it a try because I wanted to sit down at the counter and enjoy a good southern breakfast. I was immediately greeted by the waitress behind the counter, and my coffee was out in no time. I ordered the Haynie with scrapple, eggs, and home fries. It also comes with a fresh biscuit. Needless to say I almost ordered the same thing again. Everything was cooked to perfection. Not to mention the prices are hard to beat and the food comes out fast. There are two empty lots right across the street for parking as well. Have only been here once but I am already a big fan of this place and will continue to give them my business whenever I get the chance to stop in. read more

My sister and I went here today for the first time. You have to order inside first get your drinks and then go outside to find a place to sit. They were very busy, but everyone was practicing social distancing. The waitress that was there was so nice and sweet but she was very very busy. I had that Virginia club sandwich with fries and a cup of navy bean soup which was the best soup I ever ate. My sister had corn beef hash and eggs with home fries and a biscuit and oh my God it was so delicious. I think this will be a new spot for us. read more

Finally got to try it out for lunch and so glad we did! Plenty of parking nearby and had no trouble getting a booth. Everyone was friendly and it was great to see so many folks from all walks of life eating elbow to elbow! Our waitress was great and got our order and food super fast. My niece and I went yesterday for lunch and I could not find anything I really wanted on the menu. I finally decided on a vegetable plate with black-eyed peas, stewed tomatoes and greens. The greens were fairly bland. They don't have corn bread so I got a roll. They don't serve biscuits after breakfast. If you like very country, you might like this diner. read more

The Dixie Diner has come a long way and made tremendous improvements since Charlie Rawlings and his wife Frannie took over. This was traditionally a breakfast and hot dog establishment right in the heart of Old Towne Petersburg, and for many years it enjoyed a loyal clientele of local regulars. A few years ago, some folks bought it and transformed it into a bar with live music (not out of place here in Olde Towne's entertainment/dining district). Unfortunately, that version of the Dixie didn't last, probably because of the space limitations. But the Dixie has been reincarnated as a cleaner, modernized, and more efficient version of it's classic self. Food: delicious. Prices: low. Service: excellent. I give the Dixie five stars because it is a great diner. It isn't in the same league as, say, the Ritz Carlton, but if you want to taste some delicious southern-style home cooking, this is a must-visit destination in southside VA. When you taste the cuisine, you will instantly know that this is the type of food they just don't serve up in yankee-land. I haven't checked out the ladies working in the kitchen, but I believe it is the same team that cooked at the old Dixie for years. I'm pretty sure it's a couple of patient old black ladies that have soul flowing from every fiber of their beings, and it seems that the blood sweat and tears of generations that preceeded them is expressed in their cooking. They elevate fried food to an art form. The other day, my wife and I enjoyed the salmon cakes with cole slaw and tartar sauce. They were quite delicious, and the entire meal for two cost practically nothing. There is a friendly vibe here, and without any alcohol, the atmosphere is a quiet contrast to the more boisterous establishments that make up Old Towne. Bottom line; come try the Dixie and get a break from the mainstream corporate franchise chains... you won't be sorry!!! read more

This place has reopened as the Dixie Restaurant and is now operating as a breakfast and lunch place. I had the Cockade Omelet which came with grits and a biscuit. The omelet was quite good with tasty pieces of sausage, slightly caramelized onions, green peppers, and tomatoes; but the grits were lacking something and the biscuit was made with a bit too much baking soda. It was a little annoying that $1.65 only got a tiny orange juice, but the bottomless coffee was surprisingly good. Since it's just reopened, I'll chalk the grits, biscuits and orange juice to growing pains. It's small, so probably not good for a group larger than four. The service is friendly. Went back for lunch on Saturday and had the fried catfish sandwich. It was extremely good. Their sweet tea is just about at the right balance with a lot of tea taste with just a little sweetness. The cole slaw was a bit of a disappointment with very little dressing of any sort. While the service remained friendly, the waitress' tendency to call everyone "friend" was a little unusual. read more

I found this restaurant on Yelp and my daughter and I decided to try it since we were in the area shopping. It was a great choice!! Staff was super friendly. We were seated immediately. Lots of specials on the board. We ordered a cheeseburger and a pimiento cheese burger. My daughter ordered onion rings with her cheeseburger. She said they very good. I had the pimiento cheeseburger. The meat was delicious. It was well seasoned and fresh tasting. The pimiento cheese was really good as well. It came with chips and a pickle spear. Our drinks were never empty as someone was always coming by to refill them. Restaurant located in a very old historic building. We will certainly be back!! read more

Great place for a family lunch stop if traveling on I-95. Easy on and off interstate, and you get great local home cooked food and a bit of history. Navy bean soup - VERY flavorful, perfect touch of ham without being salty Bologna Burger - good Slaw dog - slaw is NOT overly wet, which is important in a slaw dog. Chili is good. Another lunch time adventure for my work team in Prince George has taken us to this little comfy diner in historic Petersburg. Dixie's menu is full of southern and home cooked goodness. Hot dogs with home made chilli, hand made patties for their hamburgers and their salmon burger. We wanted seconds on our food just like we were at home. My family and I stopped here for lunch yesterday while on our road trip. We roll deep; two adults and three small children: two boys (6 & 16 month old) and one girl (3 years old). We had been in the car for almost 2 and a half hours so the kids were antsy and wiggly and hungry. Being the road weary crew we were, we had to take a chance on a spot we had never been and weren't entirely sure they were ready for us. And to be honest, I wasn't entirely sure that a spot called "Dixie" in the middle of VA would want a rowdy black family to be in their establishment. These things may seem ridiculous to some but these are things families like ours must consider when in strange places. Fortunately, as soon. As we walked in, we not only saw another black family dining but the folks behind the counter had warm smiles and an inviting demeanor. The staff were quick to help and serve. The waitresses even took turns holding our youngest, who is notorious for being a snuggly muffin. They quickly made us feel at home and welcome; even brought our kids crayons and coloring books. They also had great seating for our large group. The food was great as well. I had the baked chicken special that me and the baby shared; he loved it. The kids had grilled cheese and tomato slices (per our request) and cleaned their plates. My husband got his nostalgic favorite, the fried bologna sandwich and enjoyed it as well as his sides. Jennifer, our server was very friendly and as it was our first time offered suggestions. My wife got the hotcakes, my daughter got the French Toast, and I got "The Haynie" (scrapple, and eggs). The food arrived promptly and was hot out of the kitchen. Everyone enjoyed their meal. The eggs were done evenly with no burnt spots. The grits were not too creamy but not too lumpy, basically perfect. The scrapple was different than I have had in the past, but in a good way. It was fried in a meal that reminded me of southern catfish or hush puppies breading. My wife who never eats any ground meat was talked into trying it and even she liked it! I called in a takeout order after getting my hair done down the street. I ordered the Dixie dog, onion rings and the slaw dog because of the great reviews. The customer service over the phone was great and when I entered the restaurant to pickup my order the staff was welcoming. It was my first visit and I didn't look at the menu so not sure what other dishes they sell...i enjoyed the food i ordered...the chili tasted similar to the chili in Cincinnati that my husband loves (I think it's gold star).
