Came to Select after a outrageously high estimate from another vendor. Select was able to come by the next day and fixed my heatpump for less than 1/2 of what the other vendor was charging. The repair was done on the spot, whole visit took 45 minutes...compared the other vendor who said it would take DAYS to get the part and they would charge me $82 just to order the part for me. We had a great experience with Select and ended up getting the yearly service package. We had some condensation on the ducts. I emailed Select on a Saturday and they emailed back late that night. I followed up with a call Monday and had someone at the house by Wednesday. They arrived on time and were really nice. They did a service of the system, checked everything out and talked through three issue. They didn't end up fixing it- just making suggestions to things beyond their regular work that I had done shortly after- but the suggestions worked and we really appreciated the conversation about the problems. Service is so hit or miss it was good to find a place that did the small things right- on time, knowledgable, not sketchy. read more

Our experience did not leave a bad taste in our mouth. I will not let one bad apple destroy an otherwise good organization. We were assured by Jim that his staff and techs will be trained so this does not happen to someone else. Again, kudos to Jim. 7/27/2016: Totally unacceptable. I've had a service contract with Select for years... each year they come to tune-up my system (Spring & Fall). Each time a tune-up is performed, there are no issues found. HOWEVER, almost every year, something about my system breaks. This summer, my A/C stopped blowing cold air. We called Select... they got us scheduled in the PM hours. My wife waited all-day, needless to say, she had to shuffle things around, etc. Later that afternoon, she received a call saying they're rescheduling her for the following day because the technician had already gone home for the day. We eventually got reschedule for the following day. When the technician came, his diagnosis states that there was no valve cap so the freon leaked causing the capacitor to blow up.Here's his reasoning - some kid may have jumped over your fence to sniff the freon to get high. THIS, despite the fact that I have evergreen trees up against the fence in some areas where "kids" could possibly jump over AND, my neighbors not having any fence with DIRECT and easy access to their compressor. I argued that if it was the missing valve end-cap that caused the leak that they should be responsible for it because nobody's ever touched that system other than them. And I am not buying the kid sniffing all my freon because just next to that compressor is another compressor that Select never touches (still under warranty) and it's perfectly fine, not an issue ever! Since there's no getting through to the guy, we were forced to accept a $798 bill for the capacitor, locking caps, "stop-leak" (more on this) & freon. Now, the leak stop... I thought it was the missing valve end-cap that caused the leak? I think it's these types of shady business practices and the fact that my wife did not have any clue about what's going on, plus the feeling of being held hostage by a service contract and the urgent need that's causing us to lose faith in humanity. I will certainly not renew my service contract with Select Heating and the same goes for ALL the properties I own and manage (I'm a realtor, investor & property manager). read more

My Heat/AC system went out so I called Select and they came right over and found that it was a simple relay and had it back up and running in no time. I think the price was very reasonable considering it was short notice. While the repair guy was here, he noticed that my built-in humidifier was not working and he fixed that too at no charge. I had a warranty issue on a one year old heat pump that I had purchased and warrantied thru Select that took a few days and a number or phone calls to resolve. The immediate response was excellent and then there was an issue with the vendor sending the incorrect part. They did work out the issues and explain the issues to me that they were having with the vendor. They went above and beyond to get the correct part in a round about way to help me out. I know they are spending money to make this all right and it is very well appreciated. My technician Yaw was wonderful on both visits. I know they gave me a very fair price on all of my previous work and they seem to be a very honest hardworking operation. read more

I used this company since my usual company was unable to make it during my specified timeframe. I still like that company. Anyway, I just so happened to call and received an end of day appointment. I had to run out for an item, so I called to let them know I was stepping out for a little bit. Unfortunately, that wasn't communicated to the technician, but he waited for about an hour. I just happened to get in just in time before he departed. He provided excellent service and was courteous even though he had to wait for me. He made a suggestion about a thermostat and he had the office email me the details about it. Excellent!! The new thermostat was a workaround to mess up caused by my remodeling contractor with my smart thermostat. I would use them again. read more

I originally posted a very positive review for this company, however they have greatly disappointed me. To make a long story short, they were dishonest with me about the work that had to be done as well as tried to charge me for something they weren't supposed to. For one, they replaced my AC unit 2.5 years ago, and one of the techs asked me how long I was planning on living in my condo, because he said that I might have to replace it. WHAT?! Every person I spoke with had a different story, be it a technician or a person over the phone. I recently got a home warranty and will now only deal with service companies through them. When a tech from NICE home services came, he told me that nothing was wrong with my unit, and everything was in order. He also told me to take one of the filters out, which Select told me to put in. He said that having that extra filter would make my unit go out faster. So I ended up not having to replace anything as a result and saved my money. read more

I write this review in hopes it will help another consumer. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! I am waiting for the repairman to return for the sixth time. When I called the office they state they are busy with numerous AC units down, the problem is that we did everything like one should. Had the company out for an inspection to make sure everything was ready to go. All systems good they reported. First HOT day no AC. Repairman came and sold us a thermostat when two hours AC not working, repairman come again that afternoon. Oh we forgot to turn on a switch, that night on AC.Owner of the company comes the next day of I think you need a pump. Three days later repairman comes again to replace the pump within two hours no AC. They will come back out. What a joke. I may not have a job anymore. Sad thing is that we went with them because we met them at the Home Show and thought great a family owned business. We wanted to give the support. BIG mistake. read more

Very unprofessional staff. Their work on replacing my AC unit was fine, but they went ahead and unplugged my old AC before I was ready / confirmed, which could have been a disaster. (By luck, it wasn't). Then, months later, they told me I had an oustanding balance that they forgot about after my work was done. I have repeatedly called to settle my bill, but apparently their contact number is not a dedicated line to their office, and it's clear they do not have staff to help settle issues (including payment!) once the job is done. Would definitely, definately dis-recommend. read more

select is a total rip-off. they charged me $95.00 just for the service call. They came by and cleaned the furnace and flame sensor. The tech was here for no more than 30 minutes and charged an additional $180.00 for a total of $285.00 for a furnace cleaning. No parts or additional work needed. A-Adkins A/C in Fairfax would have done the same job for $85.00 And Chandlers in Falls Church would do it for $136.00. save your money. read more

I am a caregiver to my elderly parents and one of my dad's friends recommended Select heat and cooling to replace their central heat and air system. As my parent's primary caregiver, I supervised and managed this process for them. Before I get into this I want to say that 3 days before our scheduled day, I started doing a lot of research on the installation process. I'm not saying I can do it myself but I had an idea of what should be done in the process of installing. First of all they were an hour and a half late and when they showed up, the guys looked like they just rolled out of bed. When they finally got started, one of the guys went around back to the outdoor unit location and just cut one of the Freon lines with what looked like a wire cutter. The Freon was blasting out of the unit in a major fog. The guy just walked away from the unit without a care in the world. From my research I know this is highly illegal. They are supposed to use a machine that takes out the old Freon and pumps it into a tank. Anyway, after the fog was done {about 10 min} the guy returned to the unit and started to disconnect the rest of the unit. When he was taking the electric box off the side of the house, he cut a wire and sparks flew everywhere! He threw down his tools and went into the house and turned off the breaker. He then returned with a meter and checked it for power, had he done this the first time it wouldn't have happened at all. After the new box was put on the house, he kicked around some dirt to "level" the ground for the new unit. He then put the unit down, he took a few steps back and shrugged his shoulders and went on his way. After he hooked up everything, he realized there was no insulation on the bigger Freon line. (In my research I found out that the bigger line of the two lines is supposed to be insulated.) He cut a piece of insulation down the middle and attempted to tape it together. When he was done it looked like a 10-year-old installed it. The Freon lines were hanging off the side of the house as well as some wires. As for the indoor unit, the new unit was a little shorter than the old one so they had to make some kind of metal piece to go between the unit and the metal box above the unit. Again, it looked like a 10-year-old put it in and covered it with some kind of silver tape. I don't think there was one screw used on the whole installation but a whole roll of tape was used. When the time came to turn the unit on, they realized they were supposed to put up a new thermostat, this process took another 30 minutes. So again, the time came to start the unit and the outdoor unit would not come on for nothing. They must have played with the wiring in the inside unit, thermostat and outdoor unit for an hour and a half at least! They finally got it after several phone calls to other people. Even when we were dealing with the office, it was very unorganized. The female manager, I think her name was Jamie, acted like she knew everything about everything but when we asked her a question. She had to put us on hold and ask someone else. SO THE BOTTOM LINE IS: I would not recommend this company, to even step on my property, unless you want a day full of comical stunts; clown amusement, etc. The system still doesn't seem to be operating correctly; the outdoor unit makes really loud noise, and the thermostat doesn't come close to the temperature in the house. read more

I have used Select a few times to work on a variety of thing, and I have never been disappointed. First call was to install a gas fireplace in my basement that was being remodeled at the time. Came out great. They also worked with the contractor and moved my furnace and hot water heater to make better use of space. Most recently, they came out when my hot water heater was on the fritz. They found the problem, provided a temporary fix while waiting for a part, and then came back to install the part when it arrived. I have also referred them to others in my neighborhood. read more

My garbage disposal broke on a Saturday and was leaking water under my sink. I called Select for a quote - I left a VM and Stephen called me back quickly. He quoted the most competitive price for a new disposal and installation and was willing to come same day. He advised me that if I collected the water with a bucket it could wait until Monday and I could avoid paying the emergency service fee. We did just that. On Monday, Stephen came toward the end of the window (which they were kind enough to let me know in advance), wore booties when he entered the house, and installed a new disposal, no problems. He was polite, efficient, and knew what he was doing. We will definitely keep his card for the next time we need a plumber! read more

The HVAC unit in my rental home hasn't been checked in like... ever, though it's only about 4-5 years old. Select came out and did a thorough check, found that everything was working properly and pointed out the correct size filter we should be changing. I have used Select Heating and Cooling 3 different times now. They continue to impress me. If there is any issue they respond very quickly. Three years ago they came out and told me my system at home was older but still had life in it and the cost to repair was very reasonable. Three years later it did need to be replaced and they did quickly and at a very reasonable cost. They also worked on my unit in my office and again they were efficient, showed up on time and again very reasonably priced. I have recommended Jim and his company to several neighbors and if I ever have another HVAC issue they will be the ones getting my business. Thanks guys keep up the good work. read more

I was hoping Jimmy would be the one to do the work but the guys who came were knowledgeable and friendly and appeared to do good work. Five days ago. on Select Heating and Cooling's web page, I asked for an estimate for fixing our A/C fan, which just stopped turning. But my request just fell on deaf ears, although they had a totally different attitude three and half years ago when they came to bid for the whole system installation ($6,500) . At that time, the response was instantaneous. And now we are in another fierce heat wave. Would any decent company leave its customers in the lurch? read more

I used Select to help remodel my bathroom. I asked them to take out the shower/tub, sink and toilet and replace them. They quoted me $3,000.00 to do the work. I wanted to save some money so I asked them to just take out the old shower/tub and put in a new bath tub and surround insert, which I had delivered to my house (but Select charged me for pick up and delivery of materials). I was able to do the rest of the work myself. So the day they were suppose to start they didn't show up until 2 PM. in the afternoon!! They took the old tub and insert out with no problems (took maybe 1 hour). Then told me they didn't have any tools or equipment to put in the new tub! How do you show up on site to put in a tub and not have the right tools for the job?!? So they had to come back the next day, but again showed up late! They still forgot the mortar mix and a bucket to mix it in! So they used my bucket and mortar mix I had left over from another job! (don't worry they charged me for the materials) They put the tub in place and let the mortar set and said it would take 24 hours before they could do more work... understandable. They came back two days later to finish and again didn't show up until close to noon. They are seriously the most unreliable company when it comes to scheduling! They finished putting in the insert and said they would need to come back to finish the dry wall and caulking the bathtub. The next day my girlfriend was home whiled they finished the work. I got home and found my tub and bathroom a complete mess! They didn't clean up anything! There was caulk and dry wall dust all over my tub and floor! They had tracked it through my house as well! It seriously looked like they finished the work and said screw it, we're done lets leave! Its now been a couple weeks and the caulk is coming off and not sealing the tub at all! I will have to redo it myself! I got the bill for all this... $2,000!! They charged me for 26 hours worth of work to just put in a new tub and surround!! (anyone who's in the business knows it doesn't take that long!) Ridiculous!! I've never been more disappointed!! I recommend you take my advice and look elsewhere if you need any sort of work like this done!!! I'm only giving them one star because I have to in order to give a rating! read more

Terrible experience, would NEVER recommend. Our A/C was functioning poorly (but still functioning somewhat); Select's tech added fluid, then when that didn't work, said we needed a full system replacement; we paid their service visit fee and said we'd consider their estimate along with others. Afterward we noticed the system was not functioning at ALL. During the course of getting additional full-replacement estimates, another company said they thought the problem was something different (and fixable), and that the fluid levels were actually too HIGH. So, frustrated, we asked Select to come back out; they sent a different tech, who found a DIFFERENT (fixable) problem. We reached out to Select's owner to help us make sense of two different Select techs giving two completely different problems & proposed solutions; he never responded. We ended up going with another company to fix the problem. Select did not give us a refund. For the record, Select's second technician was correct about the problem (we had another company fix it). The issue is that Select's first technician was COMPLETELY wrong and, had we moved forward after that first visit, we would have spent THOUSANDS extra replacing the entire system for no reason. We are simply LUCKY that the other company did a double-check for us. The complete lack of response/communication from Select's owner, declining to take responsibility for his employees, is also a huge disappointment. read more

I contacted Select Heating for the first time on August 2, 2016 for a no cooling problem. When I inquired about service rates I was told there is no hourly rate, they would quote me after a $95 dollar diagnostic fee (applied toward quote). Technician Patrick arrived on schedule and found bad compressor start-run cap in less than 10 minutes. He had the replacement part on truck and I asked what price would be to install. Patrick said it would be $350. There was no alternative. I told him I can replace this $10 part easily and that I would pay only their $95 dollar diagnostic charge and he could go. Part replace and system good. It just seems very weird that they would not consider the rip off nature of their business pricing practice. I myself am a Service Manager for a Field Service Electronics company, There should be an hourly rate offered. I cannot recommend Select because people are going to pay way too much due to a completely arbitrary pricing system. Sadly many HVAC companies have the exact same price policy. People must not support these companies !!! read more

I am writing an update to my recent review on DM Select Services. Mr. Workman, the company owner, contacted me regarding my previous YELP review and offered to do what was necessary to resolve the problem. I met with him and an associate the following day at my home. He arrived exactly at the promised time. His technician worked on my furnace to resolve a problem with excess noise that resulted when my furnace motor was replaced. But what I appreciated most was that Mr. Workman refunded the entire previous service charge amount, which was credited back to my credit card the following day. I found him to be a good listener and willing to do what was necessary to correct a previous problem. I also found him to be a good guy, with some interests in common with me. It was very gratifying to know that there are still some businesses where integrity and customer satisfaction are paramount. Thank you Jim Workman! read more

Got a bill of $460 to simply add 3 pounds of R22 to my home heat pump system. I asked them to itemize the cost for the R22 and they quoted $125 per pound. I protested the price and they said this included the labor. I checked around and this is on the high side (one or two place are significantly lower). I would have given them 2 or maybe 3 stars based on this; they were on the highside of cost but at least within the range. But I then asked why there was also an additional $85 service charge on the bill, considering that the price for R22 included the labor. They said they'd credit back the $85. When no credit showed up on my card I called back and they promised to take care of it; several days later and no credit back I called again, and they again said they'd take care of it. Two weeks now and no refund. So they completely fail for being high on price and low on honesty and customer service. Fail. read more
