We live near this restaurant. When we moved in 2 years ago it was the first restaurant we went to. It was ok, but we were not impressed with so many other Mexican restaurants around. However, a few months ago they closed and went through a big remodel. Now not only is the restaurant more attractive with a wooden counter area, and an open kitchen but the food and service seems to have improved a lot also. Recently, my partner, who had cancer surgery, was home and wanted beef soup. We called Los Yaquis which is right around the corner, but no luck. So we tried Dona Mago which had re-opened and not only did they have the beef soup, but some delicious refried beans with hand made tortilla and some very spicy salsa. All was ready on time and I walked over and picked it up. My partner was very happy with this comfort food from Dona Mago. read more

Oh, I remember this building. It was the place where Ginger, Sally Hawkins' working-class character, lived when Cate Blanchett's upper-crust character, Jasmine, suddenly broke and alone, comes to crash there in Woody Allen's "Blue Jasmine". It's in IMDB. Look it up. Truth be told, Ginger probably couldn't afford the rent there, but wouldn't it have been great if she and Jasmine went downstairs to have a chimichanga as Jasmine blathered on about tipping big. I doubt if Jasmine could stomach the food here, but Cate probably would and so do I. I was in the mood for a rib-sticking Mexican breakfast, and I noticed this place offered a solid breakfast menu when I walked by on my way to the Mission. When I entered, it was fairly empty except for a handful of regulars at one of the tables. There were at least 17 different breakfasts available in the $10-12 range, so I made a random choice picking the $10 Huevos a la Mexicana which was scrambled eggs with green hot peppers (presumably jalapeños), tomatoes, and onions. Last week I stopped by to grab some lunch as I was coming from an appointment in the area. There is decent seating but if you are a large group I would order takeout. Parking could be an issue so I recommend ordering through a food delivery service or taking an Uber or Lyft. Most of the customers seem to be patrons which makes the hospitality feel very genuine from everyone who works here. The menu is here probably has more items than most restaurants that I usually got to for Mexican food. I was tempted to order a quesadilla as friends have suggested but I went ahead and ordered a steak burrito as I was in a rush. A top quality burrito all round. There was good flavor, good beans, well-cooked rice, and good spice. Some common flaws that I come across when dealing with burritos are bad beans and dry rice which makes for a horrible burrito but this place gets it! When I used to work a few blocks away, I'd drop in before my shift and indulge in their incredibly hearty breakfast plates, particularly the huevos rancheros or the chilaquiles along with the freshly made tortillas to sop up the plate remnants...and welcome the challenge of staying awake during work hours. I finally came back after a few years to check up on them (just last week) and I love how the place just looks and feels the same, with no hipster-ish pretense and a seeming aversion to changing its working class and family-oriented atmosphere to go along with whatever current futbol game is on their flatscreen. It's just one of those places that if I lived a few blocks away, i'd definitely find myself being a regular. read more

"Three is the magic number" --De La Soul My veggie burrito tour of the Mission continues & seems there are an endless amount of taquerias here that could take a few lifetimes to explore yet am enjoying the journey. I recently got a veggie burrito w/o cheese & w/o sour cream & added avocado. For the third time at three different taquerias now I received my veggie burrito w/o avocado or guacamole even though I requested it as such. Dona Mago was very kind in correcting the error by providing me w/ a small plate of heaps of avocado slices. I appreciated this effort & gave them another tip in the tip jar. Chips & salsa come w/ the burrito yet there is no salsa bar. Television usually is playing soccer. The atmosphere here is very relaxed & is the opposite of Pancho Villa which is much more hectic along w/ the Russian roulette salsa bar as the salsas there aren't labeled so you could be getting an extra spicy salsa instead of a mild one. The veggie burrito at Dona Mago was filling & hearty as well as affordable. An added bonus is it is a short walk from my beloved Rainbow Grocery & is probably the Taqueria closest to Rainbow to get your veggie burrito. read more

Authentic Mexican located just outside of the madness of the Mission spots. The chips were pretty meh, and not worth filling up on. We came for brunch and I ordered the plantains (good, but not as sweet as some other I have had, with eggs... comes with rice and beans (also a small piece of mexican cheese, and home-made corn tortillas on the side, which for me was the highlight!) My hubby got the Machaca, which I thought was better than mine, the meat seem a bit jerky like and quite tasty. I would have liked salt and pepper on the table for my eggs. read more

What a great surprise! We were wandering through the Mission District, hankering for a bit of something deliciously local, and voila - Dona Mago. The food is cooked as you wait (you can do take-away if you choose, we saw many who did) and is so fresh and hearty and delicious. I tried the special of the day with the pork & nopales and it was amazing. The chips and salsa are terrific, the beans and rice are perfectly cooked - just the way you'd want them from a little place like this. I decided to check this place out based on the recommendation of an Uber driver who was from Mexico. I got the carne asada + shrimp plate, which includes rice beans, salad, cheese and tortillas. Overall the portion was decent, but not as huge as what I might have expected having read the other reviews. The shrimp was nicely seasoned and grilled well, but unfortunately everything else was kind of meh in my opinion. Rice and beans were bland and the carne asada itself was dry and stringy. The Mission has so much great Mexican food and based on what I ordered, I this place sadly did not seem to measure up. Giving 3 stars still though overall for friendly service and an interesting-looking menu with a rotating schedule of daily specials. My friends seemed to enjoy their meals, so maybe I just ordered the wrong thing? I'll come back sometime to see if that was the case. read more

I had the chilaquiles with chicken and my gf had the menudo. I thought my dish was fine but was sorta disappointed that the chicken wasn't worked into the dish a bit better. It was basically chilaquiles with a piece of griddled chicken on top. The menudo was probably too tripe-y for both of us. I'm ok with tripe and my gf likes it but this was a bowl of basically nothing but tripe, which also made the broth significantly tripe-ier. I saw a lot of folks with this plaintain and crema plate that looked great and will probably be what i get next time. read more

I live right around the corner and go here about 3 times a month. My usual is the carnitas super burrito. It's a very solid burrito, both in terms of taste and portion size. The rice and refried beans are both very good, and there's a generous portion of guacamole. The carnitas always has good flavor, though it can be dry occasionally. I've also tried the tortas and would recommend them as well. The service is fast and friendly. Doña Mago is a reliable choice for a bite if you're in the neighborhood. read more

This place is LEGIT. I grew up in San Diego and was surrounded by a plethora of some of the best taquerias. I have been in search of one in SF until I stumbled on Dona Mago after a workout. Not only are the portions extremely generous (I ordered the carnitas dinner plate which is a Monday special,) but the food is fresh and flavorful. I also ordered 2 chicken tamales to go which had generous portions of moist shredded chicken. The price points are so reasonable too for the quality of the food and the portion size. Located right across the street from Mazda and Volvo dealerships in San Francisco. Best Buy being about two blocks away which is the reason I ended up at Doña Mago, a little Mexican restaurant that serves the typical tacos and burritos, tortas, Caldo de Res, as well a large variety of dinner plates. We arrived around noon, Doña Mago was semi-halfway filled with most patrons being Mexican. (Good Sign!) I thought to myself when I went to the counter to order. Super Steak Burrito: this burrito reminded me of what my burrito would taste like if I made it at home. It wasn't bad per-say, but it wasn't good either. I would compare it to how I feel after eating a Subway sandwich, it's not the worst thing in the world, but at the same time it's one of the last places I would choose to go. I'm sure something else on the menu other than the burrito I ordered keep the other patrons coming back. But overall I think there are too many better taquerias in close proximity to come eat here again. read more

Do you like chilaquiles? How about carnitas? If the answer is yes, you *need* to visit this restaurant. I always order chilaquiles con carnitas, because it is out of this world. In fact, every time I have to go into SF (I live in Oakland), I make a point of stopping at Doña Mago's for this, my favorite dish. It's impossible to accurately convey the depth of this dish's deliciousness in mere words. It's also impossible to oversell it, because it is practically perfect in every way. The carnitas are always crispy on the outside and melt-in-your-mouth tender on the inside, and the other ingredients are always very fresh and flavorful. Furthermore, the portions are stupendously generous (enough food for about three meals) and the prices are totally reasonable. I love the chilaquiles so much that I have actually never bothered to order anything else--I'm kind of a creature of habit in that way. But I am sure the other menu items are excellent, based on the quality of the ingredients in, and expert preparation of, the one I like best. In short, I don't think you can go wrong here. If you're in the area, and have yet to patronize this charming little family business, I strongly urge you to hot-foot it over there posthaste. read more

Delightful staff and often filled with families, construction workers, or singletons having a quick bite, this place is unpretentious and a great value. Lots of seating to be had and TVs playing soccer or the Olympics. Recommend getting the carnitas (even subbing it in for the enchiladas verdes like I did) and make sure to get the hot red salsa - it'll burn your face off in the best way possible. Shoppin for an AUDI and stopped in here for a bite while we waited for our new A3 to wash. Man! I got excited when I saw the whole place was filled with hispanics. Holy moly did this place deliver. First the weird car commercial on repeat over and over. These two what seemed to be brothers were selling used hyundais or something like that but the real fun were these two hot Latino Ladies they were flaunting in the commercial. I didn't want no honda but my friend def wanted to stop by to talk to one of these girls. Ok back to burrito time. The salsa was so delicious! Super spicy and perf seasoned. The grilled chicken burrito won my mouth over. The rice was so fluffy, grilled chicken was perfectly grilled and not dry. Holy cow. Eat here. On a break from car shopping across the street, we saw the sign that had "chile relleno" listed. We ordered a Sunday special, fish soup, for two of us. They thoughtfully served the one-order of soup in two bowls for us. It was delicious, not over-salted, though came with bones. The soup was accompanied by a pile of fresh tortillas and a plate of soup fixings. We sat at the counter, as the place was crowded with after-church families, and enjoyed watching different dishes get prepared including a colorful, large plate of ensalada with chicken on top. Wished I saw that before ordering. Not to worry. We went again the next day. I got salad with salmon. It wasn't spectacular but I thoroughly enjoyed it as it was what my body was craving. It had romaine, kale, avocado, apples, and other items. It came with a side of ranch and the salmon had Mexican seasoning but wasn't spicy. Grilled tomato and onions on top added a pleasant sweet savory flavor. Chips and spicy salsa came with our late lunch. The salsa was too spicy for me to eat more than a few chips, but i added it on some tortilla for an impromptu taco made with my salad. I still haven't ordered the chile relleno, but we will be back when we get a hankering for fat. This place is not American, nor Tex-Mex, so don't expect Chipotles. read more

Went to Doña Maga today and it seemed like they had a completely new staff. All the food is different. Not bad, different. The mole en pollo is now, instead of a deeply chocolate brown, instead red. Still on the thickish side, still spicy, still just the slightest bit bitter. I was disappointed at the drop in chocolate level, but once I dealt with that, I have to admit the new mole also deserves five stars. So from high five stars to low five stars but still five stars. And I would order it again. The real surprise was the refritos that automatically come on the side. This is the first time in my life I've actively enjoyed refritos. They were that good! Solid four stars. Rice is still rice and still a good use for any remaining mole, so that's how I used it. Ditto with the griddled tortillas. Service still friendly enough and efficient, still no language barrier. I have to downrate the champurrado from a five to a four, but to be fair, it may be, as with mole, that every chef has their own champurrado recipe. This one was quite a bit thicker and had a few lumps, which, like boba, takes some getting used to. I would order it next time. So, sad about the change in mole and grateful that Doña Mago's new staff is committed to serving high-quality, authentic Mexican food. read more
