    Mega Cubana Torta
    Michael L.

La Torta Gorda has many accolades. Having been featured on Netflix, Travel Channel, Food Network, and on the Michelin Guide, I expected a lot from the tortas here. I visited for the first time yesterday and I was not disappointed. I met the owner Armando, watched the staff hard at work preparing all the wonderful food including the Mega Cubana that I ordered. Inside they have about a dozen tables but for some quiet and a peaceful atmosphere, there is a backyard outside dining area with beautiful plants and lighting throughout. But how was the torta? This was one of, if not the best torta I've ever had. All the ingredients were good quality. Perfect portions of each meat and other ingredients. Bread was fresh and soft, held all the cross section well. Truly lived up to the hype as one of the best sandwiches in America. Can't wait to come back for another Mega Cubana!

A very homely and cosy location to sit down and munch on a torta. The al pastor was a suitable amount of tender and fatty, while the added jalapeños added the necessary kick. The bread was soft! Service was very friendly and the vibes were good

Aracely was our waitress, very nice lady, great customer service! Theres seating indoors and outdoor. The food was delicious and the prices compatible to others in the area, I had a Cemita de milanesa it was delicious, we also ordered smoothies, quesadillas (blue corn) and chicharrón en salsa verde, there's parking right outside, make sure to pay the meter tho! Everything was fresh and tasty! Second time here , I came once years ago & the quality still as good as I remember.

First off, I would like to acknowledge the fact that I found out about this traditional Mexican restaurant watching Netflix's "Somebody Feed Phil"! It's an older established restaurant located in the Mission area of San Francisco. It has seating inside as well as a patio area. We came here for brunch and ordered firstly, a Cubana torta! How can you not order a torta when the restaurant name has torta in it! That very tasty torta was loaded and we ordered a junior size and that alone was huge! They offer the regular size too and you can only imagine! Also, we ordered the Huevos Rancheros and Huevos con Mole and everything we ordered was delicious! The homemade tortillas added to the deliciousness! The Aguas Fresca's for the day were Cantaloupe and Cucumber Lime with chia seeds, they nailed it and so refreshing! Customer Service was excellent and pricing was reasonable for the amount of food we ordered. This place is a must try, not a particularly fancy place but the food and service will win you over!!!

Wow. La Torta Gorda is definetly a must try if you are in SF. I had the 29. Huaraches with a Licuado de Chocolate. It. Was. So. Good. I went during lunch hour and they were very busy but the food was so worth it. It has some seating inside with a back patio area. Overall busy, but it the best way possible. Staff was friendly!

While coming back to the mission on 24th St. every single time Torta Gorda never fails me. I took my boyfriend and his brother to this place to check it out and it was totally authentic. When we arrived everything from the customer service to the food was amazing. Everybody greeted us and was smiling. They made everything fresh. You can see them cooking the food. We were so excited to try our food even though this wasn't my first time I was excited for everybody else to try. And myself to have one for the first time in three years. When we received our food, it looked so perfectly fresh and put together. Once we took that bite into the food, we knew it was amazing. It was crunchy soft and a burst of flavors. This place will fulfill you when it comes to authentic Hispanic food in the mission district. It is a gem that you have to check out the mission district in San Francisco 24th St. I will always come back to this establishment and I'm very grateful for real authentic tortas .

A Mexican food restaurant in the heart of Mission District SF. We ordered and enjoyed a carne asada torta which included meat, refried beans, onions, queso fresco, avocado, mayonnaise, and jalapeños. While the food was enjoyable, the service was not. The middle aged cashier was unkind and appeared annoyed by any questions we asked. For the bad service alone, I'd try another restaurant in the area before returning to La Torta Gorda.

Visited on a Saturday during the day of the dead festivities around 7:30pm with a friend, restaurant was pretty busy with a line of about 4-5 other guest waiting to order. Took a few minutes to place the order and about 10 -15min for them to prep the sandwich. Food: Pierna Enchilada Torta - torta had a good ratio of bread to filling, sandwich was toasted and filled with shredded pork in a red salsa, avocado, cheese, beans, onions and pickles jalapeno, really flavorful, all the ingredients really complimented one another, the red and green salsa on the table were delicious and added a bit more spiciness Service was fine, it was quite busy so person taking orders was multitasking so took a while before I could actually put my order in, totally understandable given the business. Overall really enjoyed the torta here, they were flavorful and a great combination of textures. If you're looking for something beyond a typical taqueria would recommend giving this spot a try.

Sundays are usually a little bit busier, but the wait to be seated and to order was not long at all. The staff is super friendly. There is indoor and patio seating which is nice for a warmer day. The restaurant is food from Puebla but there's also breakfast options like pancakes. I had a torta de carne asada and made adjustments with no problem. My friends had the tortas Cubanas and they looked delicious. We all got the orange juice and it was freshly squeezed and tasted perfect. Their menu also has platters and various other entrees.

Chiles en Nogada. Special only served in Sept & Oct. Perfection. Poblano Chiles stuffed w/ beef & covered in creamy walnut sauce. $28.

At its core, Yelp exists to shine a spotlight on places like La Torta Gorda. These are the authentic neighborhood gems--unassuming from the outside, a simple doorway to the uninitiated, and punching way above its weight in both the quality of the execution and the passion of their craft. I recently tried their fall special "Chiles en Nogada," and I think it may be one of my favorite dishes I've ever tried in all of San Francisco. I say this with no exaggeration--this dish sings. It's a traditional Mexican staple that consists of poblano chiles stuffed with picadillo ground beef, and covered in a creamy walnut sauce with hints of pomegranate seeds sprinkled throughout. Everything works together like a symphony. The sauce is perfectly whipped, just thick enough to leave you feeling full without being overly decadent. The fruitiness of the pomegranate just sweet enough to cut the acidity of the beef. The texture of the chiles, cooked just enough to maintain their bite, complement the tenderness of the beef. And it's all served with freshly toasted bread to mop up everything left behind. It will set you back ~$28 as of 2024, and they only make it in Sept & Oct, but believe me when I tell you this is the dish you'll be dreaming about for years to come. This small neighborhood Mexican eatery continues to shine, and remains a standout in the culinary haven of SF. Come give La Torta Gorda a try...you'll leave yearning to come back.

Awesome local spot with a patio in the back. Had this delicious Jr. size Enchilada Torta, Cucumber Lime Chia Seed Fresca, Chips & Salsa + their side of sauces for $24. The Torta was the show- slow cooked tender meat dripping in enchilada sauce, layers of bean avocado cheese, in between grilled toasted bread. The service is awesome, sweet employees!

The torta was flavorful and had so much depth to it! I really liked the fresh avocados paired with the pork. I thought the works/the toppings would be overwhelming (tempted to omit certain things like mayo or the onions), but since it was my first time, i had to try it as is, though i did ask for less jalapenos. The ratio of toppings was perfect and nothing was really competing against another. The bread was pillowy soft on the inside but crispy on the outside. There was a bit too much oil, otherwise super tasty. The complimentary salsas were tasty, the green one is a refreshing spice. It was 11$ for a junior torta which is a good size for one person. They have seasonal aguas (didnt try it but they had cantaloupe and strawberry!). You can find free 1 hr parking in the nearby streets. I saw a lot of people stop in for to-go orders. Not crowded at all for Monday lunch. The vibe was quaint, music wasnt too loud. Lots of wall decorations were focused on their tv appearance. Would come again to try another torta!

For once in my life, I was forced to eat like a civilized man. On the outside, everything looked normal, but in the inside it was anything but normal: I had to open my third eye center so that I could ascend my primal instinct of going to town on this burrito. Equipped with a knife, I sawed thru that behemoth methodically - too fast and she would burst open, too slow & she would give me the cold side eye. I am the burrito slayer. I have dined here many times in the past, and this is a cash-only restaurant. I ordered the Regular Burrito with Beef Steak ($10.25). The regular burrito comes with a flour tortilla, rice, beans, salsa, onions, and cilantro, plus your choice of meat or vegetarian. Meat choices listed on the menu: * Al Pastor - Marinated Pork * Carnitas - Deep Fried Pork * Chile Verde - Pork Green Sauce * Chorizo - Mexican Sausage * Carne Asada - Steak * Lengua - Beef Tongue * Pollo - Chicken * Cabeza - Beef Head * Tripas - Intestines I asked the cashier which meat was most popular, and he recommended the beef steak, which had a slight hint of spiciness. The burrito came with pinto beans and rice. I forgot to ask if I could substitute black beans. The burrito wasn't too salty, and the beef steak was just okay. I also think the $10.25 Carne Asada burrito is a good deal. At other taquerias, carne asada is often an additional charge or the burrito costs more when you choose steak. I usually ask for a receipt even when paying cash. When I checked my receipt, I noticed I was charged an additional $0.25 for "Bolsa To Go" (bag) even though I was dining in and didn't receive a to-go bag. It's not about the $0.25, but I think it's important for a business to have integrity and charge customers only for what they actually receive. I hope this isn't something being charged to other dine-in customers as well. Overall, I would come back to try a different meat, but next time I'll make sure to clearly say dine-in and check my receipt to make sure I wasn't charged for a to-go bag.

We came here on a random Thursday at 3 pm and surprisingly, the line still almost reached the end of the block. Luckily, the line moves pretty quickly and the food is solid, but be prepared to wait for a bit. My favorite meats here are the cabeza and the lengua. The cabeza is super fatty and tender and has the amazing shreddy quality of a slow cooked meat. It had the soft melty texture of collagen and was super delicious. The lengua is also really good. It was super tender and soft and had the distinct taste of beef tongue but wasn't too overpowering. The carne asada and carnitas had a good flavor but were a little bit dry for me. I think they would be better in a super taco or burrito where you have the extra fat from the cheese and avocado. My only complaint about this place is the price. I realize that everything in SF is expensive, but over $5 for a single taco and almost $9 for a single super taco is pretty egregious. There's food trucks all over the Bay Area offering cheaper (and almost, if not, just as good) tacos in my opinion.
