The service is great the waitress was an older sweet Latina that catered to our needs and the coffee refills were on point! My cup was never empty! I visited for the first time yesterday and I was not disappointed. I met the owner Armando, watched the staff hard at work preparing all the wonderful food including the Mega Cubana that I ordered. Inside they have about a dozen tables but for some quiet and a peaceful atmosphere, there is a backyard outside dining area with beautiful plants and lighting throughout. But how was the torta? While coming back to the mission on 24th St. every single time Torta Gorda never fails me. I took my boyfriend and his brother to this place to check it out and it was totally authentic. When we arrived everything from the customer service to the food was amazing. Everybody greeted us and was smiling. They made everything fresh. You can see them cooking the food. We were so excited to try our food even though this wasn't my first time I was excited for everybody else to try. And myself to have one for the first time in three years. When we received our food, it looked so perfectly fresh and put together. Once we took that bite into the food, we knew it was amazing. It was crunchy soft and a burst of flavors. This place will fulfill you when it comes to authentic Hispanic food in the mission district. The torta was flavorful and had so much depth to it! I really liked the fresh avocados paired with the pork. I thought the works/the toppings would be overwhelming (tempted to omit certain things like mayo or the onions), but since it was my first time, i had to try it as is, though i did ask for less jalapenos. The ratio of toppings was perfect and nothing was really competing against another. The bread was pillowy soft on the inside but crispy on the outside. There was a bit too much oil, otherwise super tasty. The complimentary salsas were tasty, the green one is a refreshing spice. It was 11$ for a junior torta which is a good size for one person. They have seasonal aguas (didnt try it but they had cantaloupe and strawberry!). You can find free 1 hr parking in the nearby streets. I saw a lot of people stop in for to-go orders. I've been here a few times now. The first time was during covid when I was pregnant, I remember the first time clearly because I ordered one of the aqua frescas (cucumber limon) and it was the best. They are great for breakfast and lunch. Great breakfast dishes and tortas, even breakfast tortas. I like that they have different dishes than other restaurants in this area, which makes them unique. My boyfriend likes this place for the Chiles En Nogada, which is not served everywhere. It's a poblano chile stuffed with picadillo topped with a walnut-based cream sauce called nogada, pomegranate seeds and parsley or cilantro. I love the tortas and tacos, especially the carne asada torta. I look forward to trying more of them. The only item that I did not enjoy was the Azteca Pollo Soup - it's very basic and didn't have any of the toppings that you usually see besides the cheese. These folks are just like Tio n Tia. Hella loving and welcoming & never forget a face. Set in a sort of darker area of the Mission, and not too far from SF General at 2833 24th Street lies this nice gem. This place is known for its TORTAS, but TORTA for all Hispanic peoples do not mean the same thing. My Spaniard roots, a Torta to me is a smaller tortilla like round dough fried in oil and topped with cinnamon and sugar. But for Mexican people and some Cubans, a TORTA is a sandwich. I had no idea what I was in for. No wonder this place has won awards for their mouth watering sandwiches. And the owners and servers are the best. They are nice and warm and kind people, that alone speaks worlds. It is a bit cold inside as they keep the doors open, but if you can put up with that, your meal will be spectacular. I ordered a Carne Asada Torta that was filled with Carne Asada refried beans, avocado, queso fresco, onions, mayo and chipotle or jalapenos. It was really good. My friend ordered another Torta, but to be honest, I was not paying attention. I was just hungry! For work I am sometimes based at the general, and this yummy torta place is just a hop skip and jump away, so I find myself becoming a repeat customer here! Upon entering I am always seated within seconds, with my choice of where to sit which I love. Also always given the friendliest smile once I walk in and that really does feel great! The environment is very cute inside giving it an authentic feel, I have yet to try their outside back- patio but I am looking forward to it! The food is well-priced, and always super yummy! Stopped by here a few weeks ago with my girlfriend for a late lunch - This was the best Torta I've had since moving here for sure The restaurant itself is very quaint. There is plenty of indoor seating and even a back patio with a few tables (that's where we ended up getting seated) For food - my girlfriend and I each got a regular sized Torta. I got the pollo en molé and she got the rajahs con queso. We also got agua frescas. Now I must say - for a "regular" sized Torta , these portions were no joke. There were definitely multiple servings of food there (I don't know how I made it all the way through mine). The pollo en molé Torta was great - the molé was rich and earthy and the chicken was shredded perfectly. The rajas con queso Torta was also increible - a really solid blend of flavorful vegetables paired with cheese and pickled veggies. The icing on the top was the sauces/ condiments on the side. The green (tomatillo) , red (chili) and brown (chipotle) sauces all paired extremely well with the tortas. Last, but certainly not least, the service was great. As an SF native, I'm ashamed I just visited this delicious slice of torta heaven now. We had to try Food Networks 2015 #2 Best Sandwich in America - the Pierna Enchilada (Pulled Pork) - but all of the tortas looked delicious. I chose to have everything on it, and the amount of jalapenos did not disappoint. The torta is delicious and huge - everything you would want in the second best sandwich in america. I ordered the smaller size and could have split it with a friend. And the prices are still 2015 levels! Given that they have such esteemed dishes, the wait time was around 20 minutes on a weekday afternoon. There's no reservations or wait list so you have to stick around. It's well worth the wait, and there's a cozy patio in the back if the weather is nice. Nice spicy pork flavor, excellent usage of the avocado, a little bit of heat from the jalapeños, cooled off by a nice layer of queso fresco. The bread used is also put to great effect, because it is not too dense, but soaks up good flavor to allow you to eat this either open-faced or traditional. I had the tostatas de tinga and they were really good, but nothing special in comparison to the chiles en nogada! The meat was well seasoned and the tortilla was nice and crunchy. My other friend had the chicken caesar salad and a vampiro as her beverage (a mixture of orange, carrot, and beet juice). The vampiro was enough to make a meal on its own! The back patio was great for just sitting and catching up with my friends, especially on a mild evening. We stayed and chatted with the owners for a bit and found them to be the nicest couple.
