While about half of Gettysburg relies on kitsch (Read: Un-Reconstructed Confederates and Ghosts), and Dobbin House is located at ground zero for that stuff, the other half makes a solid effort to capture the actual history of the area. The staff is attentive and not self-conscious in their period dress which gives you the chance to enjoy the experience. It's more of a dinner spot, pretty slim selection on the beer front but they have yuengling on draught so hey, it's all good. Everyone working there dresses in what I guess is civil war era clothing, which is kinda neat. I dined here on Friday with a friend. This place is so charming and has so much history. We were to excited to eat here. The food was just ok (French Onion Soup, sandwiches, etc). The service was not great, but it was really busy and we were sitting at the bar. The next day, we both got severe food poisoning and were out for the rest of the weekend. This restaurant is above and beyond. It is the oldest building I believe in Gettysburg. The servers dress as such. It's a very quiet place to dine and fine dining it is. We were very excited to visit the Dobbins house with our children! I stumbled across this restaurant here on Yelp and loved the reviews! It turned out my daughter just learned about it in school! As others mentioned the atmosphere is fantastic! Glad we got there right at 11:30, it filled up shortly after! We started with the famous French onion soup, it was really really flavorful and lived up to the hype in the other reviews! My husband had the mile high sandwich which he said was delicious! Daughter 1 had the tuna club on wheat! It was HUGE, she said it was so delicious and ended up eating the whole thing! Daughter 2 had sandwich/salad combo! She said the turkey sandwich was good and House made vinaigrette dressing was out of this world! I had the BLT, it was pretty good, nothing special. My only tiny disappointment was the potato salad.... it was premade not house made and not that good. For the price of the meals it really should have been house made. Our server was great, very prompt with seating, taking our order and even brought refills for our drinks before they were empty! It was on the pricy side, for our 4 meals and 2 bowls of soup it was $62 plus a tip. Seemed steep for sandwiches. Regardless we liked it and helped make our trip to Gettysburg memorable! read more

We took my mother in law to the dobbin house for Mother's Day. Took an hour and a half to be served a cold and tough filet with a baked potato that wasn't even warm enough to melt the butter. My wife had fish that she liked, and my mother in law was so tired by the time we were finally served she took her meal home to have for lunch the next day. At least she can put hers in the microwave and have a warm meal. All this at a cost of $220 with a tip. I must say the wine was good. read more

We visited here again in April for my wife's birthday. The place was swamped and the food was considerably different(for the worse) than our last visit. My steak was terribly overdone and the "onion soup" (which is supposed to have meat in it) had no meat in it. When I showed it to the waitress she reacted like I scooped it all out and pretended it was missing it. The overall vibe just wasn't great that night. My wife had better luck than me (hence three stars instead of two). I am just going to write off this visit as hitting the place on a bad night. This place definitely feels authentic as you find yourself in a dimly lit basement level of this 1700s building. I very much appreciated the role this building played in the underground railroad to help slaves escape the drudgery of southern oppression. However, let's be honest here the building was founded by a Protestant preacher and having a tavern in what was probably a storage area is not exactly true to history. Just don't think you're entering a tavern that's been there since the beginning. The the food is just OK we had a pastrami reuben that had way too...let's just say ridiculous amount of melted cheese and the middle of the sandwich was just lukewarm. I almost sent it back but I just put up with it. Our server was a melodramatic butterfly who rolled his eyes and when I asked for dijon he flamboyantly asked, "do you mean like a mustard?" Service was slow even though the restaurant was empty. Ribs had a very odd taste, like old grease. I wouldn't be surprised if the ribs had actually been rancid and they just tried to cover it up with BBQ sauce---it was that bad! I have had much better sandwiches at Subway. Everything we ate here made our mouths smile. The crab cakes and house made cocktail sauce was to die for and we returned the following day to have it again! We've eaten up and down the west and east coast seaboard and this was truly the best our palates have had the pleasure of eating...TWICE. Probably would be better to just go to the building, take some pictures of this historical site, check out the underground railroad "stop", and then move along. My son and I chose Dobbin House for its historic atmosphere and because they have gluten-free items. It certainly was historic (and noisy!), but unfortunately it wasn't gluten-free. The server told us the chicken was OK without the marinade. The dish was tasty, but my son had a gluten reaction afterward. I wrote the restaurant a courteous note and got no response, so I'm warning patrons here. If you are gluten-intolerant, Dobbin House is not a good choice for you. read more

It was recommended by everyone at stores/hotel, and Yelp had 4's, but my family of 4 were NOT impressed. The history & story behind the House is interesting & quant but the atmosphere was too dark & super loud, we could not hear each other talking w/o almost yelling. We heard the couple's, next to our table, complete conversation & it was not child appropriate. Nothing we ordered had much flavor & for the price, we do NOT feel it was worth it. This place is too highly rated. As a local, I am disturbed by the amount of people that ask me for suggestions for food in town and think this is the place to measure other restaurants against. To foodies or people who actually think the taste of their food is important, don't eat here! This place is an overpriced tourist trap. We ate upstairs on Valentines day. I attempted to order a glass of wine. Keep in mind, I am 27 and was dining with my parents and grandparents. The waitress, by the name of Susan, laughed at me and rolled her eyes like it was a joke bc I clearly couldn't be of age. Someone else in the party had to put her in her place and tell her I was serious. There was a reduced menu and I'm a vegetarian. When we asked if there was an option the person wasn't sure and had to check. They proceeded to bring me a regular menu. Then, when I tried to order the waitress tried to tell me I couldn't have something not on the reduced menu. The pasta dish I ordered ended up being approximately 10 noodles in a broth of water with salad vegetables on top. Two other people in our party had their meals brought out wrong and never corrected. I had the crabcake sandwich which was dry and then they served it on regular bread so you end up eating alot of bread vs. if they had served it on a bun- which most people do. My wife and I ate here recently during a trip through the area. Read about it before hand so I was looking to try it out. They had a 3 hour wait for the dining room so we decided to eat in the tavern where the "30 minute wait" became an hour. That became the theme for the evening. The best feature of the visit was the ambiance of the tavern, dark, candle lit, but during this trip just under a dull roar the whole time. Folks waiting for the dining room chose to hang out at the bar and you couldn't carry on a conversation across the two person table. The food was average, but good. The service was less than marginal. The server never came back to check on anything (read drink refills) and we spent a lot of time just sitting and waiting to finally get an "oh, I never brought your bill did I"? The ginger bread with lemon sauce dessert was the highlight of the visit. A local couple noticing our wait took the time to stop by and say that day was particularly busy and the service was not like this normally and they visit weekly... All in all, I wouldn't go here again unless it's during the off-season when there aren't many people... read more
