This place is our favorite place by far to eat in Gettysburg. We came here for our honeymoon because my husbands always wanted to visit. We were looking for a nice romantic place to eat and this was definitely the right place. Amazing service. Food was perfect. We've been going to the dobbin house every year for eight years now. We try to make it to this restaurant several times a year. This is absolutely my favorite place. It never disappoints. I maybe giving this higher marks because it was the first place we went on our romantic getaway and we were just happy to be away together, but it was a highlight of our trip along with where we stayed. We made it for dinner and were seated in the basement area which was candlelit and very cozy. They brought us bread and butter and we ordered chicken and potatoes, which were very good. More so than the food, we loved the atmosphere. We stayed long past dinner, talking, and just enjoying the candlelight. After dinner we went upstairs. They have a small museum that your can tour for free and since we had just arrived in town and were tires, we figured this sufficed as our activity for the day before going back to our B&B and relaxing. Even though the museum is small it was nicely done and we enjoyed it. On our way out of the parking lot, we caught some of a passing ghost tour. If you are into that thing, apparently this house and tavern has some ghostly history. So, overall, parking is good, food is good, atmosphere is great, and there is even a museum you can spend some time in. read more

Built in 1776, this is the oldest house (and maybe the oldest structure) in Gettysburg. Unlike faux recreations, it feels special. We ate upstairs, rather than the tavern below, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that the quality of the food matched the surroundings. The menu is traditional but our dinners (roast pork for me, salmon for my wife) were far from ordinary. Our second night in Gettysburg we went to another place for the sake of variety. That was a mistake. We should have come back here. PS A small room upstairs has historical items. Great local place for dinner. The ambiance is cute. We ate in the bedroom which was decorated as such. The staff do a great job of giving you the history. Our waitress was amazing and tentative. She was always checking on us. Food was great but pricey. We started with shrimp cocktail which was around $14. Only 4 shrimp. Maybe I'm bias since near the Gulf ans get fresh jumbo shrimp for a lot cheaper. Entrees were better for the price. My husband ate the lamb 3 ways which was cooked perfectly and seasoned lovely. I has the duck which was large. Our waitress said it was her boyfriends favorite and she didn't disappoint. The sauce that came with it paired perfectly. Dessert was also delicious. We just went here for dessert- were directed to the tavern and had to perch at the bar to get something without waiting over 30 minutes in the middle of the week. Cheesecake was clearly not freshly made and out of a box- the topping listed on the menu wasn't included but the cake wasn't bad (not great either though). The gingerbread with lemon sauce was alright, but was served cold with a glob of sauce on it. My husband loved it, but I wasn't impressed. At least it want expensive. I absolutely adored this location. We went a little early on a Sunday night and had a half hour wait. By time we were seated, people were waiting an hour so if you plan to go at normal dinner hours, a reservation is probably good. The atmosphere is amazing, everything is by candlelight, the staff are dressed in period clothing, the walls are old stone and there are wood beams, it was great. And to top it off, the food was out of this world. My boyfriend and I were on vacation and had a new job and college graduation to celebrate so we splurged. I got the crab cake dinner which was hands down the best crab cakes I've had in my life! He got the filet and crab cake and raved about it as well. The waitress we had was wonderful too. Always delicious food. I've never had a bad meal here! Make sure you try their homemade gingerbread with lemon sauce (I know, it sounds weird, but it's SOOOOO good). The crab dip was good and the baked potato was the best but pass on the steak and crab cakes. The steak had absolutely no flavor and was just blah. The crab cakes were just the crap dip heated but with lots of oil so that's all that I tasted. I think people come here because of the history of The Dobbin House but I doubt for the food. read more

This is a great place to dine and feel the history around you, as you gaze at the old stone built walls and black and white photography of the 1800's. The food is exceptional, and the old fashioned attire of the staff really brings you that historic beauty. I would also say to please tip that busty red head generously. This restaurant is beautiful and very warm. We decided to do the main dining instead of the tavern dinner, but the prices were a big higher than we expected. Our meals were very well done; I tried the hot buttered rum and a bowl of the onion soup, my friend had the steak. My only complaint would be the attentiveness of our waitress. We arrived and had our meals before the dinner rush, but she seemed to be ignoring us and instead gave more attention to the older couples she was also serving. We tipped well anyway. read more

A wonderful place to eat at! Make sure you eat downstairs in the basement area, upstairs is a formal dining area. The downstairs gives you the feel of 250 years ago. Wonderful place! This was our second visit and the food was exceptional! Service was fine- pleasant server, prompt and delightful ! This was a recommended lunch stop by our Gettysburg guide. The tavern was built in 1776 and is the former and historic home of the Dobbin family. The place was enchanting with small tables and candle lit with colonial ambiance including staff in period clothing. The lunch fare was good - salads (sallade), soup, and sandwiches. There were entrees and dessert (apple pie and gingerbread) that we passed on from being too full. The combos were perfect but the burger was lacking (hence the 4*s). My family and I had lunch here today. We were able to get a table within 10 minutes which was the extent of our enjoyment of the meal. It took over 20 minutes to get our drink ( both water and beer) and the food was nothing to write home about. After reading the reviews, I planned our main dinning experience around Dobbins House and I wasn't disappointed. We dined in the upstairs main dinning room rather than the basement tavern. The house is old and quaint, with wooden tables and chairs, antique decor, and candlelight. Luckily, we were seated at one of the best tables in the house--a small table with two wing back chairs in front of the fireplace. The rooms were filled to capacity with tables and people--but if felt cozy rather than cramped. The waitstaff wore "costumes" which were simply long loose dresses. Don't look for historical accuracy or even any attempt to escape to another time here--all the waitresses had flat ironed hair and wristwatches, and a few of them looked harassed and irritated! But, there was an older man who played live music on an old fashioned instrument that I've never seen before, and he was wonderful. I made reservations 3 days in advance and was lucky to make a 6:45 dinner time. People who walked up to the restaurant had over a 2 hour wait and were lined up to get in! The menu was pricy--between $20 and $40 per entree--and I was not impressed. Steak, seafood, chicken--the normal fare, nothing special. The only sides offered were a small baked potato and a salad (the homemade blue cheese dressing was excellent). I expected huge portions from another review, but sadly, I was more than able to finish my meal. The meal also included a complimentary bread basket with homemade white bread slices, pumpkin bread, tiny lemon muffins and whipped butter. Two dinners, with water and no appetizer, totaled $66.00. Needless to say, we skipped dessert. But really, it was $66.00 well spent on a good dinning experience at a quaint historical house. Will I be back? Probably not. I can get a good steak and baked potato anywhere. :) read more

I've always loved the Dobbin House! I lived outside of G Burg growing up in Pa. I love the SpringHouse Tavern and the history.I go there at least once every year and don't miss stopping in if only for a drink! As for the food, I have never had a bad food. Terrible food and terrible service. Management obviously doesn't care when you complain. Why? Food was ordered for lunch, basic sandwiches, ordered both without mayo (mayo automatically on all sandwiches). Food came with chips. Chips were stale. One sandwich came with lots of mayo. Alerted waitress and she was blah about the complaint and said she'd get a new sandwich. When new sandwich came out some 15 to 20 minutes later (cold sandwich, not hot) they had taken the contents of the first sandwich and just put it onto new bread. Still had mayo all over it, plus it looked like it had been partially wiped off. We alerted waitress again, and she couldn't be bothered. Yes, they took it off the bill, but we went because we were hungry for lunch, not because we wanted to starve for an hour to get a sandwich that wasn't edible. They weren't even that busy at the time. I've complained to management in writing and have yet to receive a response. This is entirely gross and unprofessional to reuse food in this fashion. Obviously they are not sympathetic and understanding toward a simple 'no mayo' request. For all they knew food allergies could have been involved, for I do have a friend that is allergic to the stuff. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant. read more

A wonderful, traditional restaurant with a great, colonial ambience. The food in the upstairs dining room was delicious and expensive. This is typical, colonial fare...the same sort of food you would find at The King"s Arms Tavern in Williamsburg, VA. The dining room is crowded and the chairs and tables are a bit close for comfort. However, if you are in Gettysburg, this is a very nice place that keeps with the historical theme. The antiques are beautiful and it is the oldest building in Gettysburg. We went on a Sunday and did not have the long lines, long wait mentioned in another review. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience yesterday and it is an "experience". You go for the atmosphere of the historic building, not just the food but our meals were very good. We got there before the dining room opened at 5pm so we went downstairs to the tavern where we were served a cold drink by very friendly servers who checked back more than once to see if we needed more drink. Then we went to the dining area and were seated in one of the small rooms with period decor. I am heavy into the antique/primitive decor in my home so I just love the decor inside and outside. The exterior christmas pine & fruit decorations are so pretty. Our server was Karen who was very prompt and friendly during our entire meal. The bread basket is wonderful, so fresh & homemade: sliced white bread loaf, banana nut bread, small sweet muffin. I had the scallops with bacon and I do agree with the reviewer who said something more is needed with this dish, like maybe a little rice or pasta, to cut the richness and the saltiness. The bacon and butter make it a bit salty. My friend had the crabcakes which she said were fantastic. The side salads were good but other than lettuce, there was only one tomato wedge. There is no vegetable served with dinner other than baked potato so a bit of carrot, cucumber would have been nice in the salad. The blue cheese dressing was perfection. I would definitely go back and would like to eat in the downstairs to try the dishes served there. read more

Food was very good. I had the broiled filet and while it was slightly over done, medium well instead of medium, it was still very good. Now at night it may be a little dark because it looked like the dining room was lit by candles at the table. I would also ask the waiter or waitress for a cocktail napkin for all of your glasses because some of the tables are angled due to the settlement of the floor over the years. The waitress was good she kept checking on us, they are all dressed to the time period, and it's the oldest house in Gettysburg so that was cool for the history aspect. read more
