Server was very nice and everyone else in our party loved their food (mostly prime rib). I, however, didn't like my pork tenderloin (with raspberry sauce) at all. It tasted weirdly gamey and was sort of dry. Other reviewers have said the same. I finished it to be polite as it was a celebration for someone else, but I did not enjoy it at all, especially for $31. Also, servers - don't leave those little folding serving tables set up next to people after you walk away. There's already barely room to move around. I couldn't get back to my table from the bathroom. Was kind of annoying that there was a baby screaming in there on and off the whole time in an otherwise hushed dining room, not much you can do about that though. I am visiting Gettysburg and so glad I stopped in to the Dobbin House Tavern! Entering you walk down the old narrow stone steps into the candle-lit eating area and bar. There are not many seats, so glad I came off hours at 4pm before the rush -- by the time I left every seat was full and there was a line outside. Restaurant was packed upon arrival but luckily was able to be seated right away. Nothing discernible regarding dining area but the food was definitely distinguishable and amazing! Wait staff very kind and attentive. We ordered the crab meat chunks and grilled mahi- both perfectly cooked and delicious. Usually mahi is grilled to a rubbery texture but this was cooked to perfection. DO NOT MISS THE FRENCH ONION SOUP! Onions caramelized to perfection with a thick beefy broth. We recently had a family gathering ( of 25) at the Dobbin House. We are visiting from the West Coast for a wedding. I called in April for our planned dinner in October. I spoke with Lauren. I can not say enough good things about our experience. Lauren was amazing! She went above and beyond to make our dinner experience memorable! The food was delicious, the service was excellent! They have two types of dining, casual, and fine. We opted for the casual dining, which was downstairs in a seller. This was probably more realistic to the civil war era in Gettysburg. Obviously everybody says you must try the onion soup and yes, I did try the onion soup. What made it very interesting was the thickness of the cheese floating on top that also had whatI I think were pieces of meat in it. It made it very filling. We had a great time in Gettysburg and it wouldn't be a complete visit without try the Dobin House Tavern for its cuisine and history. We loved the gift shop to peruse as we waited outside. They also had an outdoor bar if you wanted a drink while waiting too. We chose the Tavern and not the restaurant because we wanted that old dark historical feel. The French onion soup was outstanding and the crab dip won the yummy award for us too. The meals were traditional fare but all delicious. Next time you are in Gettysburg give it a try. read more

We were lucky enough to snag a lunch at the Dobbin House Tavern on a gorgeous Sunday during the Christmas festival. It had been suggested by the hostess the day before to come right at 11am and get your name on "the list" to ensure a table for that seating. We did just that and had no problem for an 11:30ish reservation and took the time to walk through the cemetery across the street in the interim. The decor and outfits are all period- which makes it really fun- and since you're down in the tavern you have no concept of daylight- but it really makes the experience fun! We had the Kings onion soup, the crab a la Dobbin (flippin' AMAZING) and the apple pie a la mode. Everything was fantastic and we can't WAIT to come back for a dinner (which definitely needs a reservation way ahead of time). If you're in Gettysburg, this is a spot not to be missed. read more

This was a very good restaurant, tavern and gift shop. The ambiance was a really nice pub or tavern setting. My only complaint was I ordered the focaccia Turkey sandwich but got chapoda bread instead. When I mentioned it to the server she argued with me and told me that was focaccia bread. I'm sorry but as a cook that cooks authentic Italian food I know the difference. Don't get me wrong it was still good food but not what I ordered. The server was not rude but wrong. Felt like i was being forced forward so i stole my sons. Staff was great. Wine list was very limited but was able to grab one decent bottle. The soup of the day was a good bisque enjoyed by many. I went for the Primal Rig of Beef. Got to say, i have had a larger cut in some banquet halls than you got here. It was on the dryer side until i soaked it in some requested Au Jus and let it absorb it it. We were visiting Gettysburg, and it was recommended that we go to the Dobbin House for dinner, as the food was special. I am said to say we did not have a very good experience- the three stars is for the food. We'd give one for the service. We each got the Gettysburg apple drink and it was an excellent alcoholic beverage. For a starter, we each got the onion soup (as recommended) and this was by far the star of the meal. I've never had such good onion soup, from the bread to the meat to the cheese. It was perfect. For dinner we got the filet mignon and the half chicken. The filet was good but nothing special. The chicken was excellent but didn't have sauce, which was a bit odd. Not that the chicken was dry, but it was a tad bland without sauce. Our biggest issue is it took forever for a server to see us, and once they did, we had to ask for water three times. After we finished our water, we didn't bother asking for a refill and we surely weren't offered it. We were interested in dessert but we weren't asked, nor did we want to deal with asking the server again for anything other than the bill so we could leave. We'll pass on this spot next time and try something else. It's not worth the trouble. read more

We made a reservation weeks in advance for our anniversary, but ended up in the attic, up two flights of stairs. It was so overcrowded we could hardly move our chairs, and it was terribly loud. Service was slow (20 minutes to get a drink). The bread basket was cold. I ordered shrimp bisque, and after 30 minutes, was told that they ran out and were "making another batch". When it finally arrived, the shrimp were mushy. The croutons in the Cesar salad were like rocks. The main meal was ok, but it was overshadowed by all the negatives. I love this place and consider it a MUST visit in Gettysburg. I first visited a decade ago when my wife was pregnant with our first and we both enjoyed it immensely. This time, we had a sporting event within the crosshairs of Gettysburg, so we took the whole family. It did not disappoint for a brief transient stop on the way to our final destination (hours away). I think that says a lot, we went out of our way to visit. This is a very old building with a ton of history. The ambiance is impeccable with candle light, a special dressed wait staff, and just enough subtle modern day light not to ruin it but keep the staff and guests safe. The environment and history truly creates conversations. Let's get to the food. It was pretty darn good! Lots of options and I STRONGLY recommend the Kings Onion soup - I split it with my wife and have to say, it's SOLID. Not kidding. Don't skip it, share it. My son loved his hamburger, my crab cake sandwich was pretty good (not dry), and my wife's turkey sandwich was exactly as expected. I personally loved the potato salad, my wife did not, which worked out for me because I ate hers. It's Pennsylvania Dutch style - if you don't like sweet then order a different side. They accommodated my little guy with a pile of grapes. For the naysayers out there, be cognizant that their kitchen is probably limited in size and capability given that it's a 200 year old establishment without the intent of being a restaurant - they pull off what they can and do so incredibly well. Service - EXCELLENT! Seriously, some of the best I've had since Covid started. Conclusion - Add it to your Gettysburg bucket list. It's an interesting experience that you truly cannot get elsewhere. Me and my husband stayed at the Dobbin House as well as ate at the Dobbin House Tavern from Thursday to Friday. We were absolutely blown away by the level of professionally, service, and overall experience. We stayed in the Reynolds room. It was extremely spacious, the bathroom was nice, and the heater worked incredible. They also leave snacks and drinks in the fridge for you. Miss Bonnie, Miss Mary, and Miss Barb were absolutely showstoppers. The service in the tavern as well as the younger woman, hostess were polite, and sat us as soon as possible. The food was incredible, especially the French onion soup, And I couldn't get myself to stop eating. I recommend this place over the Farnsworth any day. The proximity of this place to the battlefield and to all of the shops in downtown Gettysburg are perfect. You can walk anywhere if the weather is permitting. also the bed-and-breakfast had a common room which was perfect to play board games in and the overall comfortability of the home really felt like you were staying at home and not being watched by cameras and Made to feel like you were in a weird paranormal social experiment other like some bed and breakfasts in the area. We dined at the Dobbin House on a Tuesday evening and I must say... I was disappointed. It was my first time in the restaurant and I had heard great reviews. Our table service was prompt and our server was very excited to share the history of the restaurant. The historic building is charming. A nice salad was served first but my main course of crab cakes was dry and bland tasting. My asparagus was tough and almost inedible. My wife had the pork tenderloins and they were dry and tough. The raspberry sauce was tasty. The tables are packed together which makes for a noisy environment. If you are looking for an intimate quiet venue, look elsewhere. The bathrooms are clean but undersized for a restaurant of this size making for lines particularly for the ladies. I have not been to the tavern side of the restaurant but it will be unlikely that I return. read more

Fantastic atmosphere! This Tavern is definitely a step back in time. Through the door and you're back in the 1700s, most of the building is original. The original tavern is down the dark steps . It's so interesting with the original bar and a fireplace. We sat at the bar where we were treated very well by Pat the bartender -in full costume. Menu was great! We tried the much touted Kings Onion Soup, the Roast Beef Sandwich and the Spinach Salad- all were excellent! This is our 32nd wedding anniversary and Gettysburg is my favorite place to visit in Pennsylvania. We brought our daughter and 4-year old granddaughter with this time. I'm sorry we stopped, KFC or pizza would have been better. The flounder was so spicy, one bite had my mouth on fire and I couldn't eat it. The King's onion soup was ok, if you ignored the completely burned cheese. The wee one's chicken fingers were bland. She did like the potato chips. Hubby's strip steak was tough. A unique experience in the oldest and most historic house in Gettysburg, PA. The food was very good. I had the crab cake sandwich which was as good as one you'd get in Baltimore. My husband had the Mason's Mile High sandwich with ham & roast beef which was also very good. Our waiter (who all wear civil war period clothing) recommended the potato salad, which was also good. The basement tavern was very interesting, but don't forget to tour the house while you're there. Some areas are open for viewing and some rooms are used for dining.
