No reservations accepted. When we arrived around noon there was a 45 minute wait. We gave a name and received one of those vibrating, light up devices that is activated when your seats are ready. We were asked if bar seating was OK and we happily agreed. While we waited we perused the gift shop and bought a couple of items for ourselves. Step next door to see the Underground Railroad hiding place can also be done while you wait. With still some time left once done with those activities, we went into the dining room, not used during lunch service and admired the holiday décor and fire burning in the large stone fireplace. We were seated at the bar and our bartender was very pleasant and had a sharp sense of humor. She's been working here for decades and really knows her stuff. Seems much of the staff are long time employees. Sounds like the owners are good to work with. We had reviewed the menu's while we waited, but there were some additional specials available at the bar and I ordered the Barkeepers special while my hubby got a burger. When I ordered a red wine to pair with my meal, the bartender made a recommendation that was 'the next up' from the 'house' wine and it was an excellent accompaniment. The food took a reasonable amount of time to come out of the kitchen. Not too quickly, not overly long. My meal was a lot of food. A side salad is included, as well as a dinner roll and butter. I chose the house herb blend vinaigrette dressing on my salad. Being a lover of most breads, I ate that, as well as my salad and by the time my meal arrived, I was already feeling full. I focused on the meat, which was tender and mostly lean with only a couple of fatty pieces. I now many folks love those fatty pieces, so take that information as you will. The burger was absolutely huge. Hubby 'smashed' it down to fit in his mouth and he actually couldn't finish it all. He did try, so it must have been good. The atmosphere down here is very much that of a colonial pub. Lighting is low, lots of wood, decorated for the holidays. Not exactly 'romantic' but it does have ambiance. Staff are dressed in period fashion which adds to the feel of stepping back in time. Although thankfully, they do have indoor plumbing. I'm very glad we were able to make this a stop on our recent visit to the area. If you have the time and are interested in historic buildings, I do recommend you give this spot a try. read more

As a history buff and staying in Gettysburg for the night, you know I had to check out the Dobbin House Tavern. We sat in the fine dining area on the second floor and had a wonderful dinner by candlelight. You really can't give this setting lower than a 10/10. It's perfect and very well preserved. The service was amazing as our server did an excellent job navigating us through the menu and their specials, etc. We started off with wine and a house Moscow mule while enjoying some delicious homemade breads and homemade butter (corn muffins, white rolls, pumpkin raisin). This was some of the best bread I've ever had in my life! They bring it out while it's steaming hot which allows the butter to melt so perfectly. Our meals came with house salads and they were perfect with homemade dressings (I did the house vinaigrette) For our entrees we went with the Seafood Isabella with fresh scallops (scallops were seared perfect) and a perfect Cajun broth with pasta. And their prime rib with a delicious ajou to go with it. The baked potato comes with very limited sides (butter and I think they can fondue cream and chives). If you're looking for cheese and bacon, they won't have it. The dessert menu looked fantastic but we did not have room, sadly. I will be back again! Stopped here with the boys on my second trip to Gettysburg in two months. On my first trip we were unable to be sat in a time crunch - but on today's excursion we made sure to be there as close to open as possible. We were sat immediately as the lunch crowd hadn't filed in yet. The atmosphere is very dark, candlit, true tavernish looks and views. Dark wood, stone walls, candles on table. Our waitress (Katie?) came over immediately and took our drink order. Quick check of menu looked like they had 159 year old sarsaparilla so Hatt and I both got one. I also added a DC. We ordered two apps for the table: crab dip and the bread loaf with cream cheese spread. The crab dip was really good - traditional recipe with minimal cheese and paste like with really good ciabatta points with them. Great composition of the dip too. The bread was easily my favorite item- reminded me of a banana nut bread - very moist, sticky top layer to the loaf, and very fresh. It came with cream cheese points which originally we were told would be more of a flavored cream cheese. The cream cheese really isn't even needed - bread is THAT good. For my personal meal - I got a French onion soup and a grilled chicken caesar salad. The chicken on the top of the salad was large - expertly grilled and moist. The caesar dressing was more sweet than unusually prefer but still really good. The soup was great - and it had no chance it was getting slurped after I polished the bread and cheese melted on the top. We passed on dessert - but I recommend this spot as a MUST HAVE AND MUST GO place while in the area or going to battlefield. read more

My husband and I made an overnight stop in Gettysburg on our drive home from Florida. The Dobbin House is such an awesome place to eat! We did not have a reservation as we arrived in town later than expected, but we luckily managed to get in. I highly recommend a reservation if you know your time of arrival. The Dobbin House is a historic building with many plaques describing its past. The inside is interesting, as it is kept as historically accurate as possible. They even have some tables set up as four-poster beds upstairs! It's so cozy...like you are spending time in someone's home. Loved that! The food and drinks are absolutely delicious. We weren't that hungry after the stressful drive, but we each had the Baked King's Onion Soup and shared the Prime Rib. Highly recommend those options! Their punch cocktails are also very good. When we return to Gettysburg, we will surely be back for more. read more

Awesome... building predates the revolutionary war. I ate downstairs... you're gonna wanna do that despite the stairs. You can easily see our founding fathers fomenting revolution here (they didn't, it was a private residence but the ambiance is there.) candles on the table. Excellent bar. It is a little tight but again very cool. I arrived Wednesday at 6:30 pm and was seated almost immediately. Staff are in period clothing and well turned out. Menu has a nice selection of American food. I tried the kings onion soup expecting French onion... I got that but it had chunks of beef... a pleasant surprise. It was excellent beef notwithstanding but the beef was really good also. I had the half slab of ribs entree. It came with an excellent salad and baked potato and rolls. The ribs were good, well within acceptable ribs standards. They do come sauced. The potato potatoes as a potato should. All butter came in wrapped pats, not idea but it is what it is. Rolls were merely okay, not remarkable but okay. I had the house root beer and sarsaparilla both were fine. My waitress was Cecelia ( excellent colonial waitress name, just sayin) she was very efficient and attentive. While this is a tourist spot and the wait was ridiculous, it was worth it. Such a beautiful restaurant with some much history. You travel down to a rock like cavern that hasn't changed since first built. The menu is small but all our food was hot and delicious, typical burger and sandwich lunch menu. read more

Because of that we really had trouble talking and hearing each other and that was a bummer. My husband and I were in Gettysburg for some down time and we like to talk at dinner. Our waitress never told us the specials that I overheard other waitresses telling others. She got our drinks wrong. She never asked us how everything was until after another waitress cleared off our table. Food portions weren't worth the price. This is probably why we haven't been there in years! We had dinner after a long day of sightseeing and hadn't eaten since breakfast so I was ready for a great meal and got one. I had NY Strip and my wife had Crab Cakes. I'm reviewing my dinner. I started with a hearty Onion Soup. The soup was cooked to perfection and loaded with beef chunks and onions. The next course, a Caesar salad was tasty and just enough. The star of the show was the NY Strip seared to perfection and flavorful. Both tender and juicy I can almost taste it now. The side baked potato was huge, fluffy and light. They had a nice wine, cocktail, and beer selection. My table enjoyed the pork tenderloin which came with choice of potato and salad. My husband and I always dine at Dobbin House while visiting Gettysburg, which is conveniently close to outside of Harrisburg. The food, atmosphere, and service have always been excellent. We've been coming here at least biannually since before we got married. We typically order steak and crab cakes. The entrees come with delicious homemade warm bread, side salads, and baked potatoes. However, I would NOT recommend this restaurant for families with young children. Our 9 y/o was so excited for a "fancy dinner" and got dressed up. And our 1.5 y/o was very well-behaved in her high-chair. She was occupied with books, toys, coloring, etc. But a few other patrons were visibly and audibly judgmental of us having kids there. They were also rude to our server, who was lovely. We heard them scolding her about how long it took for their wine to arrive (which wasn't long). I worked in the service industry for years so I took notice of this. I'm still recommending it, because it's not the establishment's fault, but wanted to warn other parents that this isn't a child-friendly place, and the patrons can be very uppity. I know it's considered "fine dining," but our children are well-behaved and respectful, and we still deserved a nice night out. We spent around $160 and left feeling like we weren't welcome at all on our first experience of family vacation. It was such a disappointment because we have always loved going here. It was very off-putting. I could understand if our toddler was being loud, but we know how to handle her in public, and honestly the guys who looked like they just ended a round of golf were louder than she was! I forgot to take photos because I was so annoyed by the loud remarks about us having the audacity to bring our little ones there. It's clean and food is really good but service honestly was terrible, our server was very inattentive, waited 20 minutes for menus and 30 mi uses for our food. Made reservations the day before and got in really quickly. When we arrived we were seated immediately. Love the old house with old furnishings on the wall. Very quiet even with tables full next to us. The bread was delicious! We ordered a mulled cider mimosa and it was quite tasty. I ordered the chicken and shrimp with baked potato. Large chicken portion and the potato was good size. My hubs in the other hand ordered the pork tenderloin and was disappointed with the texture of it. Visited here about 6 years ago, and after coming off the field ( as a reenactor) supporting the 160th Gettysburg Battle Reenactment weekend, I truly needed a home cooked awesome meal! Where better to go but to the Dobbins House! ? My wife had the lamb, and I the prime rib. We each started with fresh bread, muffins, and other items. The salad was fresh with a great house blue cheese! The main courses arrived steaming with a baked potato. Had a great time here for my husbands birthday. The ambience is definitely unique, a bit kitschy. The bread and blue cheese salad were fire! I was hesitant about mixed reviews for this place. Usually restaurants like this are a tourist trap. However, that is not the case for the fine dining room. We were warmly greeted upon entering and ushered up a flight of stairs to a beautiful dining room decorated like the house from the 1800s. We were sat in one of the tables in a four corner poster bed frame. Our server, Amanda (AK), was attentive, punctual despite the restaurant being filled, and full of smiles and recommendations. The bread basket had this apple walnut bread, roll, and mini corn muffins with fresh whipped salted butter. We started with the onion soup. Nicely soaked croutons, gooey cheese and a nice beef flavor. We both had the prime rib, and freshly prepared horseradish sauce (ask for it!). You must get the Chablis mushrooms. On May 16, 2026, My wife and I (a 65 yr old disabled person) wanted to get drinks at the Dobbin House ( we have gone there since 2008, at least once a year) in Gettysburg, Pa. We noticed that there was an outside bar and seating. So we headed toward it. The waitress ( young blonde girl) told us we needed to go inside first. My wife and wanted inside met by two young woman (1. tall dark hair white woman 2. young African American woman with a nose ring). They told us if we wanted a table it was 45 minutes to 1 hour wait. We aske can we get drinks outside, they said Yes. We went back and sat at a table since the bar was packed and the were only a few customers at tables. We sat there for 5 minutes and no one approached us . We got up, I went to speak to the Bar tender. At first he was polite ,but when I asked why no one came over to us..."you don't have any silverware or napkins so we don't have to serve you." I said that is not what the girls inside said. He replied "we only serve drinks at the bar, your welcome to stand here and that's how we do it!"then again "THAT"S HOW WE DO IT AT THE DOBBIN..." at that point I walked away. I have never been talked to like that ever. NOW we will NEVER return. read more

The restaurant is literally someone's house. All floors were converted to seating. Some seating even looked like a bed. It was cute and charming. The house even use to be apart of the Underground Railroad and had a small exhibit showing where the slaves hid. We had reservations at 6:30 after the Gettysburg tour. We were seated pretty quickly. A friendly waitress handed us a menu and got our drink orders. I decided on the crab cakes and my husband got the prime rib. They are not kidding about being mostly crabmeat. There was nearly no filling. It was full of sweet juicy crab meat. My husband's prime rib was cooked perfectly. It was tender and juicy. They had interesting bread in the bread basket including what it tasted like a cake. Whatever it was it was very good. The salads are generic. The house vinaigrette is pretty good.
