We came here for breakfast due to good reviews, early hours and walking distance from our hotel. Air conditioning was great. Service was efficient and friendly. I got the Greek omelet with hash brown potatoes, which they allowed me to sub for bread, since they didn't have any gluten free breads. My husband got the Nola with fried potatoes and rye toast. I went to Doc Taylor's mother's day morning 2018. This restaurant was highly recommended by a man at the hotel i was staying in. Upon arrival i was excited to try such a highly recommended restaurant. The restaurant appeared to be a remodeled home. I was seated right away. A simple but nice looking restaurant. I decided to try the crab cake Eggs Benedict and fried green tomatoes. The Fried green tomatoes came out drenched in grease, very disappointing. I anticipated a wonderful breakfast and when my crab cake eggs benedict came, they were also a disappointment. The hollandaise sauce tasted like it came from a can and the crab cakes were tasteless. I start my review by saying all reviews seem super hyped and I would NOT recommend this mediocre place to anyone. I was there for the breakfast this morning and i was told its a 40-45 mins wait unless I can secure a place on a bar, which I did within like 5 mins. Served came by in a hush and asked me about the order. When I asked if they have fresh fruits to go with french toast he said no and said they only have grapes I was like who eats grapes with french toast. Anyways I ordered there Doc Tuttle french toast with a side of chicken sausage and coffee. Only plus point here is coffee was good and food came out very fast.. the rest i had terrible experience. Server never returned to check on me or if I need more coffee or anything else else, he only showed up when I took my credit card out. First time visit and it's a small lil house that's been converted, great crowd and very friendly guest. We went to bar because we were told it's an 45 min wait which was fine until we recognized it was almost 1 1/2 wait with no justification to their method of madness. We are undecided about which meal choice and we continue to review I recognize their are 3 cooks & waiter in same kitchen. One cook had a bad habit or rubbing his hand across his face/head an then wipe on his pants. He discust me because his uniform was dirty but I get it working an using clothes as napkin. The Doc Taylor's southwestern omelette is WOW. Chorizo , pepper jack, onion, bell peppers, tomatoes and a taste of greatness. The French toast I loved as well. With the simplistic sweet flavor, powdered sugar, medium thick cut toast, its hard to not like it . I wish they supplied hot syrup though! But you guys have to try the southwestern omelette, it's spicy, peppered, and rich! We got there around 0715 on a Saturday morning so right when it opened we got seated right away, we ordered right away and ate almost instantly so I suggest going early on the weekend. Working away from home and stopped at Doc Taylor for breakfast. Was looking for a nice breakfast place, I really dislike hotel breakfast. Doc Taylor didn't disappoint, I ordered the NOLA omelet and they had legit spicey sausage. Very tasty and cooked just right. Coffee was a nice smooth medium plus great flavor. The staff was very friendly, pleasant and engaging which was great to see a group of people getting along and enjoying their day. The food is good, the ambience is charming, the waiter was solicitous, it's in a sweet part of the oceanfront, the beer was fantastic, so you could say I have no complaints. I used the bathroom, and that was clean. The prices are a bit high. But because they were one of the only places open that night, and so close to Christmas, I didn't even care. The rockfish was caught that day or maybe the day before. It was so fresh and tender, and the smashed potato mixed with goat cheese was out of this world. I will go back. read more

Butter...where's the Butter..??, Used to be one of my favorite restaurants for breakfast but since my last visit the chef has decided to replace real butter with something that resembles a mixture between lard and some other unknown substance that doesn't melt, tastes like hell and will hold a fork and spoon together for an hour, literally!!!! Came in on a Wednesday in May for lunch. I was easily able to sit at the bar. The bartender Chelsea was super nice! They have $2.50 drink specials. Like you get a Bloody Mary, a mimosa, a screwdriver or a grayhound for $2.50. It was awesome! I didn't expect anything amazing and I got just what I expected: a rail shot and some mixer basically. It was good and simple and cheap. Can't beat it! I also got the catfish po-boy. The fish was cooked well and it was good just not super flavorful. Their Granny Smith apple tartar sauce was okay too. A group of us were in town for vacation. We decided to stop at Doc Taylor's for breakfast prior to some of the group departing. We were traveling with our small dog, so planned to dine outside. Upon arrival, we found out the outdoor section was closed. The manager explained that the dog wasn't allowed inside (totally understand) so we were going to find somewhere else while the rest of the group ate there. The hostess came back outside and suggested that if we would order takeout, we could get the food to go, but sit outside on their patio to eat it. It was the perfect solution and allowed us all to have 1 more meal together before everyone went their separate ways. The gentleman at the bar was incredibly patient while we all placed and paid for our separate orders. The hostess checked on us multiple times and held the door for us each and every time we had to carry drinks or food out. They went above and beyond to accommodate our needs and we were blown away by their kindness. The food itself was really good as well. A couple of us enjoyed the sweet potato pecan pancakes and they were absolutely delicious. Others enjoyed eggs, potatoes, biscuits and even oatmeal. My family was looking for a place to dine not to far from our vacation rental and we found Doc Taylor's it was literally across the street. I would honestly choose this place over any of the breakfast buffets you see advertised all of the time in the area. We were seated quickly and got our coffees and waters. My parents ordered a simple breakfast of eggs, hash browns, bacon and toast. My sister had the chocolate chip pancakes and I ordered the Doc Taylor sandwich. It was amazing. My sandwich had a fried egg, cheese and bacon with two Parmesan grilled tomatoes on an onion roll. Served with Old Bay potatoes. This sandwich was so good that when we visited again I ordered it again! My family enjoyed their breakfast and I heard no complaints. Overall the experience was good the food was amazing and delicious. One thing I was disappointed about was that after COVID they made their menu smaller. I was really excited for crab sandwich, but they didn't have it. So if there is particular stuff you want you may want it you should call them or get the updated menu. What an awesome second visit at Doc Taylor's. I rolled in solo on a Tuesday morning to find it strangely quiet... that is code for no line out the door and a wait up to two hours. This place especially as we approach the Summer vacation season gets mobbed. A quick stop at the hostess station and viewing the bar was dead I instantly made up my mind where to go. This time NO KIDS to distract me from what is important, enjoying my food and feeling the vibe of this cool beach establishment. If there is a better way to get a vibe from a restaurant than a seat at the bar someone please shout it out. It's no secret that you learn everything you want to know about an establishment if you can set curb side and take it all in and believe me I got an earful. My waitress Carlene (yea I got shout outs for this review) was on top of me with a pretty smile and great attitude to provide service. Coffee was at the table in less than a minute and darn good. I continued to review the unique breakfast offerings with cool names. I decided to ask my esteemed chefs behind the bar questions about a few choices. They were working behind the hot grill with the skill and focus of a team of surgeons, but made time to chat. My new buddy Joel went out of his way to chat it up with me on menu options. Joel also had a very contagious laugh that made me feel incredibly comfortable. It did not take me long to hone in on biscuits & gravy, I rarely get order it and love them. According to Joel they are completely made to order fresh... nothing is made ahead of time. They have traditional (mild) Chorizo (hot) and Andouille (medium). By now my Yelp friends should know what I would order since I am so weak at the knees... traditional it was. I continued to enjoy awesome banner with Joel and the other cooks that was very entertaining and made my morning. What made the experience even more special when manager Ray came over for some foodie talk. I tried to match wits with him, but failed miserably. As Carlene filled up my second cup my order of hot biscuits and gravy (see pic) was up and smelled intoxicating. Two cakes with tons of homemade gravy poured around those delicate puppies. Just enough gravy on top of the biscuit to provide a peak of that gorgeous cake. My taste buds could take it no longer as I lunged a fork into into the center of that masterpiece and took a bite. Eureka!!! I can now say that I know who makes the best biscuits and gravy not only in this town, but of any town in America. Bold statement, but I challenge anyone to say they know better and have tried Docs. Sitting in the restaurant as I plug this in... My Husband insisted on us coming back to this spot, though the food is aaaaight I'm not sold! We walk in and the kid in the front came off very rude to me but My DH brushed it off. I also notice a lot of "Who are they" starring, like We are Black and we are eating here and PAYING our Money Like everyone else! People don't stare at us like this in Texas I thought to myself. I order Apple Juice and it comes in a kiddie cup (ridiculous), and a western omelette. My DH ordered a stack of pancakes and some sausage. Everything came out fast and the waiter was pretty decent as well. Doc Taylor's is an institution in VA Beach.  Everyone needs to experience this restaurant!  From what I've heard, they haven't increased their prices in over a decade (I think it's been longer than that, as every story differs). It's a little "divey" house near the Oceanfront and has been there forever! It will most certainly be at least an hour wait, no matter what time you get there and sometimes can be a 3 hour wait.  Don't fret, the best is walking next door to Longboards (same owners and I think it was renamed to Seaside Market Lounge, although I'm not sure) and getting a few mimosas or bloody mary's under your belt before brunch.    You can either sit inside or outside.  They've expanded their patio in the back and made more seating!. I suggest for your first time, if possible, to belly up to the bar area so you can see all of the magic that happens!  There are 4-5 guys back there moving like a well-oiled machine.  I couldn't keep up with what was going on and it was fabulous!  Food slinging everywhere, rarely orders that are screwed up, and eggs that look like a photograph (weird right?).  They are yelling at each other and you just can't stop staring!  It's amazing what these guys can do at the grill! I always opt for something different.  Eggs benedict, their hollandaise sauce is on point!  Quiche of the day, ham and gruyere last time, spectacular! Corned beef and hash is so great, especially with runny eggs on top just oozing all over the hash!  I love to order a banana pancake after my meal has arrived, it's almost like dessert! Had a great breakfast. Caitlyn was our server, attentive, engaging and a fun personality. I like that you can get lunch during breakfast. My wife was very happy with her grilled ham and cheese on marble rye. I had eggs Benedict. Eggs poached perfectly, but I would have liked a little more hollandaise sauce. Went here today for the first time in VB. First impression - please get some signs!! Husband and I had to ask a patron who was already there.. Pro Tip: the restaurant itself is in the small White House and their "lounge/waiting area" is the colorful place right next to it. While waiting we saw many people confused as well. So I wanted to let my fellow yelpers know. :) Next, for 2 of us at around 11am it was a 1 hour 20 min wait. The only reason we stayed was because we paid $10 in parking across the street for 2 hours - good thing too. So we suggest getting there VERY EARLY. But the lounge area was great and the mimosas were fantastic at $3.99 you can't beat it. Then, the food. I got pancakes, side of hash browns and bacon all of which were great. My husband got the "Doc Taylor" and said that was good. Finally, the service (-1 star) upon arrival the host was kind of rude, the sever was not overly attentive and seemed to disappear after awhile. When we finally got the check we paid immediately to leave. However, overall 4/5 stars for us because you can't beat the prices and the food/drinks.
