I was debating on going to Ruth's Chris or trying something else and I settled on Doe's. I started with a drink and some of the tamales. The tamales are served with a side of chili. They were fine. You really only talk about tamales if you have a bad one and these were just fine. I ordered the fillet medium rare end it was a fantastic. proper steak. My fries were burnt pretty badly but to be honest I had so much food I could barely eat the fries anyway. I think the fries would've been tasty had they not been overcooked. I did not send them back because I just couldn't have eaten them regardless. I've seen other reviews about the "ambiance" not being that great but what I got was a local fantastic steak. Ok, after having my second steak here, I have to review again. The spousal unit and I shared a 2 lb porterhouse on our last visit, and it was one of the most flavorful steaks I have ever eaten. Fries, new potatoes, and mixed greens were great as well. The salads and 'drop biscuits' - which are actually fried bits of dough - are not really noteworthy. I guess my hesitation on going to 5 stars would be the ambiance - or lack thereof. I'm very comfortable with a casual surrounding - but I still struggle with the uncomfortable, torn and wobbly cafeteria type seats and the plastic plates. This is a down-home steakhouse, with a Delta flair. We went for my husband's birthday and ordered the 2 lb. Porterhouse. We were really impressed with the size and the flavor of the steak! The filet side was cooked perfectly and so tender. The outside had that perfect crisp and amazing flavor-- my husband was raving about it with every bite. My husband was a big fan of the crunchy, flavorful fries and I was quite fond of the boiled red potatoes. The little drop biscuits are also pretty tasty. And then the mac & cheese was Outstanding! We both ate only a couple bites of our salads-- It seemed like they made the salad in large batches with the dressing and that it had been sitting in the dressing all day. I'm not sure if this salad style is something from the 'delta' or just an easy way to make it. Perhaps if they used cabbage instead of lettuce, the salad would hold up and not be as wilted/slimy. It didn't taste bad, it just wasn't appetizing. The tamales and chili as an appetizer were pretty good, just an american version of the dish-- and we got them free with a 'Check-in'. Doe's is like an old school steak house with southern charm and service. The menu is very simple but a good selection to choose from. The food came out hot and very large portions. I like Doe's a lot and whether it is just a dinner or you are celebrating something special you wont go wrong. Out running errands with husband. We have driven by Does Eat many times. Sometimes a few cars were there, most times there were none so we didn't think they were open for business. This night , we saw a few cars in Lot and decided to stop for dinner. Walked in and sat in the back of the restaurant where there were three other tables dining. AMBIANCE: So, this is one of the main reasons I hesitated between a 3.5 and a 4. I wasn't expecting anything fancy since I had heard it was not fancy inside and the outside especially does not look fancy. I guess I just was kind of shocked at the prices, compared to the ambiance. If I'm spending about 50+ per person, I prefer to have a nice ambiance. I get that this place wants to have more of a.. hmmm let's call it a down home bar/restaurant kind of a feel and not your typical steakhouse, I guess. I ordered the side red potatoes with it and was not impressed. They weren't seasoned at all, just plain boiled in water potatoes. They brought butter out, but it was very cold butter and hard to spread on the potatoes. My husband ordered the Porterhouse with a side of their fries. He liked his steak, but he said mine was better. The fries that came with it were pretty darn good. I would prefer those over the potatoes. Our entrees also came with biscuits. There are so many things wrong at Doe's, I am having difficulty finding any positives ... 1) The salad was soggy 2) The tamales were bland and overpriced ($10 for 6), the accompanying chili boring 3) You cannot order a steak under 1 1/2 to 2 pounds for one person unless you want to pay $33 for an 8 ounce filet mignon. I went without a steak because I could not eat 24 ounces of meat and refuse to pay $66 a pound for a steak ($33 for an 8 ounce filet x 2 = $66 per 16 ounces/pound). The smallest steak porterhouse, sirloin, or t-bone you can get is 1 1/2 to 2 pounds and they refuse to sell anything smaller. How many people can eat 24-32 ounces of meat in one sitting? 4) The gumbo was disgusting. Tomatoes, okra, and hot dogs instead of what the owner calls "andouille sausage" ... YUK! 5) $7 for a 14 ounce beer, $8 for a well drink ... in Arkansas ... really? 6) The menu is extremely limited. They have steak, shrimp, tamales, something they call gumbo and corn and crab bisque (which they are always out of apparently) ... that's it! On the positive side, I tried some of the French fries and they were hot and decent. Our server was also friendly and efficient. This is truly my favorite type of steakhouse experience. The creative genius of the outside of the building makes you wonder if you're even at the right place. Once you walk inside, you are quite certain that you have made a good decision and dining here. Within a few seconds, I was greeted by both management and waitstaff. In their genuine lack of pretension, you can tell that they truly appreciate you coming into the restaurant. I like very much that they explain not only the restaurant but the process of how they work. They let you know upfront that the restaurant is about steak. Plain and simple. On my first visit, Leah was my server. A conscientious server with a smile that would light up a room, she was diligent, effective, and personable. I was able to witness at least three other servers from across the room who could've easily matched the same description in their own unique way. When the T-bone steak arrived at my table, the only word that could really come to my mind was "Wow!" Visually stimulating and large enough to feed a small village, this steak looked absolutely fantastic. My only hope was that the flavor could live up to the visual presentation. Toward that end, it did a really good job. I will not say, however, that this was the best steak I've ever had in my entire life. The steak was certainly way better than 'good' and cooked exactly the way I had requested. The flavor profile was very simplistic, accentuating the true flavor of the meat. There was a bit of charring on the outside of the steak which in my opinion, did not add to or enhance the flavor of the beef. I think it would've tasted better if it would've been seasoned and prepared the same way, but cooked over a woodsmoke grill. That would accentuate the flavor of the beef and bring out a beautiful smoky flavor. That is, of course, the way I would do it and I am not the one owning or running this restaurant. That being said, it was a pretty great steak. It seems like the restaurant and staff that works there are doing all of the right things to get me to people in and retain old customers. They have programs in place for people to come back over and over and over again. There are even "members" that have their names engraved on permanently reserved barstools I think that's awesome! It's next to impossible to walk out of the building without at least two staff members thanking you for coming and encouraging you to come back. This establishment is a must visit for every time you come to Bentonville, Arkansas. The table that was next to me, boasted that it was the second time for them to BF the restaurant in as many nights. While visiting Arkansas, one would think that there would have to be either a good steakhouse or BBQ joint. If casual dining is what Doe's Eat Place is going for, they sure have it on lock. Once you walk in, it's like you're somehow transferred into a dive bar. There's a bar straight to your right, and the tables are incredibly casual, similar to a BBQ joint. The server told me that there was a dining room in the back, but hey, why not just sit right in the mix? As far as their menu goes, they serve up some huge steaks. For myself, I opted for the filet mignon and half dozen tamales. You heard right, tamales. Incredibly random, but at $10 for 6, how could you pass that up? The tamales themselves were actually pretty decent. They weren't the fatty tamales that I'm used to, as they look more-so like taquitos, but taste-wise it wasn't too bad. On the other hand, the filet mignon was pretty amazing. It was both juicy, and had an incredible flavor to it. One thing it did pass was my "decent steak test." If it's good enough to where I don't have to use A1 steak sauce, then you're a winner. In total, I spent ~$50 for my beer, 6 tamales, and filet mignon. We went to Doe's for my Mom's birthday. They opened at 5pm and we walked in almost right after they opened. They took us to our table and the hostess said, "Oh, it looks like someone spilled some dessert on there. Hang on and I'll have someone wipe it off." There were literally no other customers in the restaurant. Instead of moving us to another table, we had to wait, holding our things while the waitress came and scratched a few dirty places off of the table with her finger nail...I kid you not. We had my one year old daughter with us and I went to go find a high chair for her. As I'm looking over high chair after DIRTY high chair, I'm realizing that all of the straps on the high chairs are broken. Our server walks by as I'm becoming increasingly frustrated and casually says, "Oh yeah, none of those high chairs have straps..." We left. As we left, we walked passed six servers just sitting around talking. I almost said something snarky about them cleaning instead of sitting but I bit my tongue. *I will say that we used to visit the Doe's in Fort Smith regularly and we NEVER had any of these issues. The food there was always delicious and the staff was always kind and attentive. We NEVER had an issues with cleanliness at the Fort Smith location. The bone-in ribeye gets an A+. I don't consider myself a steak expert, but I've had a lot of it. I would say that this steak is almost as good as the one at Mastro's Ocean Club in Vegas (my all-time favorite) but better than the Gibson's steak in Chicago and Capital Grille's. Too many steak places try to get overly-fancy with their seasoning and it ends up being too salty or overpowering. Doe's keeps it simple: they let the quality and perfectly cooked temperature of their MEAT shine. The tamales and bread were also surprisingly good. I didn't eat the salad so I can't comment on it... I came to be a carnivore, not eat some plants ;) So, why only four stars and not five? Normally, I wouldn't ding a place for the atmosphere (or service for that matter) as I really only care about how good the food tastes.
