Update: went back in August and much improved! Had the burger and it was so juicy and you can see the bun absorb the pan seared patty (awesome outside crispness)! Loved that they ask you how you want the burger cooked (medium rare as always). Thinking next time I'll get fries but I was pretty happy. So looking forward at grabbing breakfast again from here now that they've combined a few things. Woo hoo! First impression: not bad. I think they're still working through the quirks of the demand of the area I think they're still working through the quirks of the demand of the neighborhood in the business that comes with. I had two scramble to eggs and two sausage patties and a cup of coffee all came to about $9. I did think it was on the pricier side for things that are pretty simple (maybe an area designated for coffee refills for those dining in?) but I enjoy the ambience that is in the space. I'm curious to see if the front counter situation will be addressed meaning if there should be more space/better line control? Perhaps a different layout for ordering and then taking a seat? Looking forward to coming back in a few months to see how things have changed. :) read more

We were very excited when this place opened and having a diner around the corner. We used to go to the Buena Park coffee shop and liked it, so we assumed the food would be good. However, our first time there we found the food to be pretty bland and very expensive considering the quality. We were hoping that they were just getting the hang of things, but we've been back a couple times and found the same, food is very meh, and Clark st is chock-a-block with much better restaurants with similar prices. If they change the menu or go to management or something we might give it another try, but for now we stay away. read more

I am torn between a two and three star review for this place. We stopped in for a quite dinner one evening and the service was friendly but that's about where the positive aspect of this place ends... Thinking back, we probably should have come for breakfast instead of dinner. It was pretty much dead inside when we arrived at around 5:30pm and I'm sure this is the kind of place where you could get a great omelet. I had the turkey club and it was very blah. Nothing remarkable about it. No one in our party of three was impressed, but we enjoyed the quiet atmosphere and left. Not much else to report. Of all the places we went to eat in Andersonville this was at the bottom of my list as far as quality of food is concerned. Food was good and came out quickly. However, I ordered a drip coffee which on the menu was listed for $2.35, when the bill came I was charged $3.00 for "bottomless coffee", which I didn't order. When asked the waitress about the price difference, she snubbed me off and said that was the standard coffee price. She didn't come back once to refill my coffee, nor explain that it was "bottomless". Would not recommend this place, unless your looking for surprising extra costs when the bill comes. read more

Server did not indicate that it would be an extra charge - it just showed up on the bill. Went here for a quick lunch break while out and about. Servers were quick to seat us and grab waters and menus. My party and I had the croque madame and the chicken sandwich, both of which were excellent. I would come back just for another croque madame - so delicious although a little unorthodox in presentation! I'd skip the coleslaw and get a different side. I wasn't too excited about the breakfast options they had, and ended up ordering the chicken and waffles. The chicken was not warm and the waffles were just meh. I was still hungry after finishing the meal. They also overcharged for my caramel latte. The layout is a bit strange and it was quite loud, making it difficult to converse with my friend. However, it's a decent place for a cheap meal. This wouldn't be one of my top choices for brunch in Andersonville but I'd return again. read more

The donuts are awesome and I love the potato salad and coleslaw. I also love the basic breakfast with eggs, toast and bacon - with the super yummy butter and jam. Today I ordered Dollop Diner's buttermilk waffle with fruit to go-- the "fruit" was 4 blueberries and 3 slices of (I think) peach with a very small container of syrup, which was barely enough for the waffle. Last time I ordered this, I got a reasonable amount of fruit and a large container of syrup. I don't think 4 blueberries and 3 slices of peach constitutes as fruit with my waffle, it was basically a garnish and it didn't even taste fresh. I'm fairly certain that my order wouldn't have been presented this way if I had eaten IN the diner because if it had been delivered to me with such a scant amount of fruit, I would have asked for more. This was absolutely NOT worth $8--and I even tipped! (When I placed the order, I added it to the total, which I will never do again if I ever order anything except coffee here in the future). I was also told my order would be ready in less than 10 minutes and I was there about 15 minutes. When I got to where I was going (work) and opened my container, I had to go show my co-worker my waffle "with fruit." She was just as offended as I was. read more

Lots of neighborhood buzz about Dollop Diner, so I had to check it out when I had a day off. First impression, before I even saw the menu: This is hands-down the most claustrophobic space I've been to in years! Truthfully, I don't like ANYONE so much that I'd be forced to sit arse to elbow in a dining room. That said ... the wait staff was friendly and efficient. The menu was limited, to say the least ... kind of contrary to the concept of "diner", but hey, it's Andersonville (home of the $14.00 hamburger). As I'm a vegetarian, I tried the Kale Burger. Taste: no better than any veggie burger I've had in any other restaurant anywhere. Small in size, on a commercial bun, accompanied by a thimble sized serving of cole slaw. Brewed coffee: Very good. $3.00 for bottomless cup. Very reasonable. Veggie burger and coffee: $15.00. Price point: I can do better. So can you. You'll have elbow room elsewhere, too. read more

The vibe is good, the donuts are good, but there are other places I'd rather go for a small meal and a coffee. Not a bad choice, but not the best. Also, for the neighborhood, it's a bit pricey. Like one waffle is $7 and very inconsistent, one time it came with fruit, but every other time it didn't. I'm giving Dollop five stars because I like it a lot and selfishly don't want it to leave Andersonville. It's two blocks from me and is a chill alternative to the rest of the local long-wait brunch scene. I always recommend it to friends staying with us or people who want to meet us nearby for breakfast and I always get really positive reports. That's the key word--breakfast. This is not a traditional breakfast-lunch diner. There are way more breakfast options and the vibe is a cafe/breakfast-y so I've honestly never considered it for any other meal unless I want breakfast for dinner (technically, the chicken biscuit is listed as breakfast...) however I'm sure they have some good options given the success rate I've had with the rest of the menu. Did I mention the biscuit? If the idea of a flakier, crunchier biscuit excites you, this is your place. Get it with gravy and a side of eggs or with chicken, or just add it to your meal. And the home fries are actually fried and the crispiest I have found in Chicago. Not exaggerating. With countless options under $10, there's no complaining about the prices, even if the portions are reasonable as opposed to generous. I wish I could speak to the coffee/drinks and more lunch items, but for what I need it for, Dollop is spot on. read more

What happened to this place? Went for a patio lunch, the entire experience was bad. Let's start with the service; rude host, who also was our waitress, the food was extremely late, and the furniture was uncomfortable. We ordered a cheeseburger and chicken sandwich, how does that take long? Other tables received their food ahead of us and were seated after. When we asked, the waitress stated "we have a lot of take-out orders", ummm you have customers here in-person. Basic hospitality. When the food did finally come it was actually tasty, but not memorable. Our bad experience was topped off with made up face covering rules by the waitress to serve her interest and not actual requirements by the CDC or city. It was very odd. This place is fantastic! Its a hip new take on the breakfast diner experience, but you won't find any greasy spoons here! The food is high quality and comes from local companies/farms. Fresh doughnuts every morning but they sell out quickly, so you'll want to get there early. Service is spectacular too, everyone seems very chill. Gets very very tight on the weekend mornings, but I suppose that's a good problem to have. They serve Gluten Free Bread and Buns, so you won't be missing out if you have an allergy. I also overheard the manager telling a customer that its a nut free environment, which you NEVER see anymore. Nice to know I can bring my kids here! read more

This was my first visit to the Dollup Diner and I would definitely go back. I ordered breakfast with a vanila latte. My latte was fantastic. It was just sweet enough but not too much. Also the presentation was excellent. The 2-2-2 breakfast was also great. The bacon was perfectly crispy with almost no grease, scrambled eggs were fluffy and cooked just right. The pancakes were very tasty, too, although I was unable to finish them. In addition, I ordered a side of potatoes which were definitely the highlight of the meal for me. They were crisp, lightly salted and still moist inside. I made sure to finish those! I am an out of town visitor but this restaurant is now on my list of Chicago diners to return to next time I'm in town. read more

Oh wow! I'm more than delightfully surprised! Good food and even better service. I ordered the chicken and waffles and my mom got the healthy farmer. Super good all around! Let's talk about these waffles! So light and fluffy and the maple butter was divine. A great combination with the fresh fruit. The chicken on the other hand, fried but somehow still so light and flavorful! Some really good fried chicken if I may say so. A great brunch choice. I'm not a big omelet gal, not a fan of eggs, but it looked fantastic! Ingredients mixed in and it just put in after, key to a good omelet as I've heard. I tired one of the house fries that came with the omelet and had to order a side for myself. You have to get those house fries, SO GOOD! Overall great food and a quaint and cute place. There is a patio for when it get warmer out and I think even a back area (I'm not 100% we say in the front area). We will be returning! read more

What a wonder. I loved this place. First off don't let the name fool you, it's not a regular diner. Somehow they elevate diner-ness and came out ah-mazing! ? Mexican mocha was amaze balls. So amazing I said amaze balls (I rarely use colloquial expressions). I can imagine it with a splash of Baileys and that would elevate it but it was great as it...a nick spicy kick in the back of the tongue after it's all swallowed. I got the chicken biscuit and that was awesome. The biscuit was buttery as flakey but didn't sit like a brick or feel too rich. The chicken was crispy yet moist and simply flavored. My friends got eggs and pancakes? I didn't pay much attn to their food as mine was so great. We took their son and he had a pancake and a lot of his food ended up on the floor but someone it was unobtrusively cleaned and no fuss was made. I like that the place isn't cookie cutter, they serve drinks in the early am, the coffee is awesome, the food is legit and the prices are so reasonable. Yup. Go. read more

I don't love Dollop Diner. I want to love it, and I hope a couple more trips will change my mind. I do love the space. It's very cute and clean, with lots of light, and outside seating in the back. There's a long narrow hallway from front to back, which I imagine can get pretty crowded. It's mostly self-service. You grab a menu (or look at the wall), put in your order at the counter and pay. I sat up front, so my food was delivered, but other reviews say that if you sit in the back, you have to come back up front to get your order. They could do a better job of communicating this. I came in about 5:30, and no one said anything to me. I sat at one of the tables, because no one told me NOT to, and then wondered what would happen next. Another table came in and picked up menus, which helped me figure it out. It wasn't until after I had taken a menu that the woman behind the counter explained the drill to me. She seemed to be training another server, which is fine, but a little acknowledgement is always nice, especially if you have an unusual ordering system. I got the chicken and waffles, which was a disappointment. At 12 bucks, it's the most expensive item, and my order consisted of one sad little piece of fried chicken -- I'm guessing it was a boneless thigh, but it wasn't really recognizable -- cut in half and sitting on a thin waffle. Other photos show a healthy dollop of butter, but that seemed to miss my plate. I got blueberries, so bonus for that, I guess. It's a small menu, and part of my disappointment was that they didn't have what I think of as "diner" items. There are three sandwiches, two salads, and a decent collection of breakfast items. Prices are reasonable, but I'd guess they add up fast. I'd like this place more if it was a LOT friendlier. The only person who even smiled at me was the guy cutting potatoes in the kitchen as I walked past. Other reviews mention bussing your table. I was going to bus mine, but I couldn't tell where to put anything, other than on the counter, and no one ever said anything about it. The thing that makes Dollop LEAST like a diner is that at most diners, they're happy to see you. I'll be back, primarily because it's less than a block from my house. The service process at this restaurant has serious flaws. It started with us having to hunt around the restaurant for chairs because there is no host. The place was packed so I had to awkwardly compete with other large parties to get chairs. Next, the ordering process is horrible--the lines at the front were super long and so I spent FORTY minutes with hungry kids with no service. It took forever for the food to come. The bottom line is this just isn't a place you can bring kids, at least during weekends anyway. Next, the food came and my eggs were cold and runny. This place needs to decide if it's actually a diner--or just a coffee shop where you can get an egg sandwich. There's lots to like about Dollop-- the space is sunny, light, and inviting. The staff is really, really attentive, especially since it's one of those places where you order your food at the counter. And the food we sampled was mostly tasty (especially the biscuits). The place does need a few small tweaks though- I find the ordering at the counter a little odd. The day we were there, Dollop had a long line, and the ordering was painfully slow - we probably waited 10 minutes to place our order. So something needs to give there (I do think if a restaurant is counter service, rather than table service, diners want to feel like it's efficient). The menu is definitely way way more breakfast oriented than lunch, so that's something else to hold in mind. As for the food, everything we sampled was tasty-- the breakfast sandwich was good (the spicy mayo is indeed spicy, so be warned). The only thing that was less than exceptional was the over-cooked potatoes. I'm not crazy about the little flimsy baskets the food comes in -- in part, they are flimsy, and in part, they scream picnic, not diner. I will share two more caveats-- the portions are scaled to the price, so things are small. I want that damn donut to be as tasty as it looks- somehow it didn't live up to my hopes and dreams. read more

My boyfriend and I ate here this morning. We really enjoyed it. After eating we looked up reviews and were very surprised to find as many negative ones as there are, especially since the place has only been open for 2 weeks. Anyway, of course they had a couple of kinks. They ran out of donuts really quickly, so we didn't get to try them. The chicken biscuit didn't have enough maple butter, but it was still super yummy. Also, the kale salad would benefit from a touch of sweetness, like candy pecans or a few more strawberries. The biscuit with preserves probably should've been warmed up, too. But the portions were good, the salad was big, the biscuits were large. Unlike other reviewers, I thought the portion sizes were great. The coffee was good, the service was quick, and the employees were attentive. It's a really cool space, too. Much bigger than it looks from the street. We'll definitely be back. Went to Dollop a couple of weeks ago and I have been thinking of the potato salad ever since. I actually think I dreamt about it a few times. Best potato salad I have ever had, seriously. Also, great pickles, great burger, great fried potatoes. I was solo so I chose to sit at the bar, for the action. Great first experience. We stopped in and had a quick coffee (Metropolis, yum!) and dessert the other night and were both very pleased with the food, staff, and casual atmosphere.
