Totally one of my favorite places in fort Wayne. Environment: this is a very traditional and home style feel.. It's a more high end feel compared to the other Don halls guessed houses. I like how many people come to enjoy the food here and their food is amazing. Servixe: always top notch. Never really disappointed with the service. The food comes out pretty fast and I can't complain about the strength of their drinks. If you want some good food and a relaxed time this is totally a good spot. Food: love it. I'd say that this food is so food that when I think about coming here I get excited. Usually Id say that their chicken sand which is awesome but that's an understatement. It's nice and juciey. This place in one word is nothing short of amazing. The wait staff is always so friendly and prompt. But the thing I love most is the prime rib. Oh my goodness! So tender and flavorful. The sides are great too. I'm a huge fan of the loaded baked potato or rice. Even the applesauce is terrific. I never have room for dessert, but I hear every choice is fantastic. Now I've had much more expensive meals at more upscale places on town but for $15.95 versus. $49.00...I'll take Hall's every time. read more

We visited Don Hall's Old Gas House for a family Sat dinner. The restaurant is in a interesting historic building that gives it a lot of personality. We were seated in the room that had a singer/entertainer and he was pretty good, but it was a little loud. Once seated, we ordered filets and the jambalaya risotto. Meals come with bread, salad or soup and sides. The bread was a highlight, it was warm and crusty and served with soft real butter. The salads were fresh but average, and the soup of the day was potato which was reported to be quite good. The steaks were all cooked as ordered and the risotto was creamy and delicious. They offer a number of interesting sides, our group ordered a variety of potatoes. Mashed were homemade, fries were frozen, and the german fried were prepared with vinegar and brown sugar so they were like a german potato salad with hash browns. For dessert we split a chocolate cheesecake and orange vanilla crème brulee. The cheesecake was more like a fudgy layer cake but it was rich and delicious. The orange and vanilla played well in the brulee for a very good dessert. If I had one complaint, it would be the level of service. Our waiter started off sort of abrupt but warmed up as we went along. There were also just some service standards that weren't there, such as dishes not being removed from the table or refills not offered. When we first arrived we had a reservation, but they seemed to be confusion on where we could be seated. It could have been an off night, so I will give them benefit of the doubt. Great cool, old place. Had the Chicago burger...awesome and huge. But the hall fries aren't home fries as we thought...they are homemade potato chips (no salt) so be aware. The Philly Steak was excellent and like a French dip with the au jus. Messy but great!! Big portions. read more

Hall's Restaurants seem to have gotten a reputation around Fort Wayne for being the favorite dining establishments of the city's elderly population. Why this may be true in some ways, Hall's has great food for great value and the "oldies" seem to understand this, the Old Gas House has charm and culinary pleasures that appeal to diners in every generation. I love the traditional feel of the Gas House. Pictures of Fort Wayne from a time when the city was still booming in automotive commerce line the walls and old menus are framed to showcase the "good old days" when steaks only cost $4. The food at the Gas House, while traditional, is always prepared well and to order. I'm a fan of the Cod dinner...order it blackened for a spicy Cajun treat, Hall's knows how to deliver a kick. All dinners come with two of the restaurant's many sides; I like the Mac & Cheese 'cause its made with really zany noodles and the green beans because they are buttered up and delicious. Order a salad (or a trip to the salad bar) with your meal to sample Hall's homemade Poppyseed dressing, it is SO good. In the summer, be sure to visit "Nick's Boardwalk." This is the deck that is connected to the Gas House restaurant. The two restaurants share the same kitchen but each has an entirely different feel. The Gas House is family friendly while the deck appeals to a more adult crowd...it's a great place to have some great bar food and stiff drinks on a lazy summer evening. The boardwalk competes head-to-head with Fort Wayne's other outdoor dining local, Club Soda. Skip the Soda and head to Nick's for a less pretentious atmosphere, better drinks, and better value! In town for work and in the past wasn't overly impressed with the chain restaurants the Fort Wayne area has to offer. Decided to heed the other Yelp reviews of the Old Gas House and give it a try. First off, I was a bit confused because the building had a sign on it saying "Takaoka of Japan" but upon closer inspection both restaurants are connected. After being seated I was presently surprised to see a respectable beer list with detailed descriptions of each selection. Prices seemed very fair (at least compared to what I'm used to in Chicago). Having had a late lunch I wasn't super hungry and settled on the prime rib sandwich. While the "famous" prime rib inside of the sandwich was good I think the roll was even better. Oh yeah, the bread they bring out for you to snack on before your order comes out is pretty good too- I think it had a combination of salt, garlic and onion sprinkled on top of it. Let's just say I had to ration myself so that i would have room for the rest of my dinner. While probably not a 5 star when compared to big city restaurants the Old Gas House definitely holds it's own in Fort Wayne. If I'm back in town for work I will make sure to keep them on my list. read more

Not from the area and the place was recommended by a local. Was expecting some decent Midwest fair but was simply blown away by the food and value. My Canadian visitor and I had Filet's that could only be described as perfect. Quality of meat excellent cooked to perfection with a awesome but simple butter sauce. Best steak in years for me. This was accompanied with some asparagus cooked and seasoned to perfection and the side dishes were not ignored. Let's go back to the appetizer, a huge portion of sesame crusted Ahi Tuna. Yes this is Ft. Wayne but it was spectacular, better than anything in California. The only downside was no soy sauce for the wasabi but it was not a detraction. Washed this down with some local beers (Muddy river?) that was recommended and superb. While I don't usually go for desert we jumped in just to see if anything here was "weak" and again treated to greatness. I had an orange cream brule with strawberries that was excellent. My friend picked a slice of raspberry chocolate cake and what arrived was about 1/4 of a cake, he could not finish it but tried hard! Service was top notch, fast and friendly and was not scared to reccomend dishes when quizzed. Not a real fancy place, comfortable and with damn good food at a very reasonable price. The 10oz Filet's were $23 and would have gone for almost double in California. I'm constantly travelling and not a big steak person but this was one of the most enjoyable meals in more than a year. read more

Family dinner with the parents- sadly even with reservations we were given a table in the bar area. Our waitress was bubbly and engaging - we ordered drinks and reviewed the extensive menu. Parents had been there multiple times - we were new. Greatly surprised at the reasonable prices and the quality and quantity of options. Ordered the brisket sandwich with coleslaw. HUGE and delicious and for $10.99! Really loved the room, not too noisy even with almost every table full on a Wednesday evening. To be honest, I had absolutely no idea this place existed in Fort Wayne. Due to some great date planning, I was presented with a deck, helpful service and a view of the St. Mary's River. Loved it! (We decided that the fish we ended up ordering probably didn't come from the river.) We started with an order of the Tacos de Bele. Perfect for sharing. Pairing the tacos with an Oberon was also a smart choice. As we finished up the appetizer, we moved on to the main course. I opted for a regular burger with a side of fruit. Was the burger ginormous? Yes. Delicious? You betcha. Good enough that I took those leftovers right home with me. When first arriving at the restaurant, I was a little thrown off by the Takaoka sign on the main building. But upon further investigation, I quickly spotted the deck area. I was overly impressed by this place and would definitely return when I'm in the Fort Wayne area again. read more

It may not sound like a lot, but this restaurant is easily my favorite memory of the time I spent three months working near Ft. Wayne. The food, atmosphere, staff, and the food (that's right, that good) make dining at DHGH an amazing time. The last time I ate there, I had the most phenomenonal seared sesame ahi tuna ever. Ever. In fact, I still think about it, and i haven't eaten there in almost a year. Christ, why haven't I been back yet? This restaurant really is a gem. I loved the atmosphere of the Dining area, the light live music - that seemed perfectly appropriate, our waiter was great, and the food was phenomenal. I definitely recommend the Prime Rib with their homemade creamed horseradish, the Jambalaya Risotto, and the mushrooms as a side dish were phenomenal! My daughter had a reuben and it looked good. The chicken sandwich is too big (tall). It has three pieces of fried chicken on it topped with a coleslaw and tall bread. It was too big for me. I had to eat it with a fork and knife and it made a big mess. My wife had a fish sandwich, which looked good. It was one large piece of fried fish put on a sandwich. Not as big as the chicken sandwich. Their portion sizes are huge. I ordered french fries as a side and got enough for two to three people. No military discount. read more

First things first - this was my first trip to the Gas House, but certainly not my first time out to eat. All things considered, I'm not sure how often I'd recommend this place to anyone. To start, our service was borderline bad. To be fair, this may have been limited to our server. She was slow, not attentive, offered no opinion or information about the menu, and even tried to deter us from ordering beer, as they are "out of so much". She also never mentioned any other type of drink, including a draught list. All in all, she would receive a 2 out of 10. Our entrees were nothing to write home about. My wife ordered the fried chicken sandwich (the breading was much too salty) and I had the smoked brisket, which was mediocre at best. We both opted for the near-flavorless Halls Fries, which are basically homemade potato chips. The one saving grace was the spinach artichoke dip. It is served in a large soup bowel, with a mountain of hot pita triangles. It was delicious, but we left wishing we had just ordered that and been done. First - review of Hall's. The inside seems a bit "old time-y" in appearance. I haven't eaten inside here often, except a few times I came at lunch. Pretty much loved it! Every time I came, I ordered the prime rib sandwich, which was more like a huge cut of prime rib placed over a piece of bread, all for around $7. WINNING! Second - review of The Deck. I LOVE this place! The ambiance is so nice and relaxing. I wasn't sure how the food would be, but dang it was good! I had the loaded tater tots, and OMG, they were so good... all of my friends were eating off of my plate. Their drinks are priced just right. I was nervous about the drink, because it was so big and fruity - usually my experience with those drinks is that they are weak and end up upsetting my stomach because it's just a glass full of sugar. However, these drinks actually turned out really good! They tasted great, and weren't disappointingly weak like I would have expected -t hey were just right... not too much, not too little. It's pretty cramped because it's so busy and not that big. I wish they would build a bigger deck! LOL The wait to eat is like over an hour for sure during a typical summer night. One thing I will touch on - some people that live here complain that it's just some small deck next to a smelly river. HELLO, this is not Chicago or NY... seriously, why complain?? Everyone loves it... stop being a Debbie Downer... LOL. If you want something super spectacular, move to L.A. or something like that. This is Fort Wayne, people. You are as fun as you and your friends make it! The surroundings definitely help. It's right next door to all the downtown places and when there are festivals... pretty much in walking distance, so it's pretty busy during festival time or when there's concerts. The boat rides are fun! I rode the faster boat (not the pontoon), and the guy was really fun and the ride was nice; it was something different than just going out to the bar. AND... you can bring your drinks with you... SWEET. Third - review of Takaoka. That IS a part of Hall's, right?? IDK... I know that I LOVE Takaoka!!! Get a group of 10 or less and order some hibachi and saki bombs. It's like a tradition in our group! Their steak hibachi is sooooo good. Well... actually, everything is good, but my fave is the steak/chicken combo. The staff is super fun and friendly. If you plan on making a reservation, you better plan way ahead of time, because I call in advance every year and can't get anything before 9pm. And they don't take more than 10 people (have someone else call to reserve the other 10???). I highly recommend, and there really are no "con's" about this place. read more

This is an icon in Fort Wayne that you must try at least once. The building is an interesting structure and has been updated in recent years. The food is always solid. My favorite is the prime rib of course. They have a nice salad bar - not an over whelming number of choices. The service is always professional. This place serves as a hub for lots of other activities. All the horse carriage rides in town leave from here. The greens were a bit limp, and the whole salad was a bit small, especially for an entree. - My colleagues' meals were equally good but not great. I hadn't been to the Gas House in at least 15 years. Was pleasantly surprised to see the remodel. I was quite thrilled with the menu---a variety of different items not typically seen in FW, like seared sesame crusted Ahi Tuna. Everything sounded too yummy and it was hard to make a decision. I'm giving it 3 stars because this place has the right idea of being great, but it's not quite there yet. The "warehouse" room has a great vibe to it---kinda hip, kinda big city. But the staff is kinda not. I have to agree that the staff here are "typical" Hall's employees. A little sloppily dressed (and that could be because of their lame uniforms---come on Halls, step it up a notch. Class it up a bit, eh?) The older waitress called my Dad "sweetie." This isn't even remotely cute. Sorry, but this is a huge pet peeve with me and it is unacceptable at a finer dining establishment, IMHO. The steaks were cooked perfectly as they should be: they are known for their steaks and they did not disappoint. The 12oz "durwood" was cooked perfectly and had the right amount of black pepper. At $23, this is expected. (I agree with the other reviewer who said you'd expect to pay double in California. However, in CA you expect the steak-at-double-the-price to melt in your mouth. This did not.) I docked a star because my Mom ordered the "Crab stuffed Portabella Mushroom" and got a grilled portabello mushroom with a half-ass crab cake on top of it. We asked the waitress about this and she made us feel as if it were our fault for not reading the menu correctly. She neither offered something different nor a way to amend the error. It was NOT a portobello mushroom stuffed with crab & hollandaise sauce. It was a portobello mushroom and a pre-made crabCAKE. Big difference if you know what I'm talking about, especially when you get it in your head you've ordered one thing and it comes out another...a little disappointing.) Anyway, beware. The mac & cheese is not made on site. It's made at their Commisary restaurant and hauled over. Thought this was a little disappointing for the kind of "class" it's supposed to be. Makes me wonder what else is not made on site. For dessert we split a creme brulee. It was a huge portion, really. however it was borderline custard and I swear i detected cinammon on the top of it, which distracted from the true flavor...maybe they knew it was more custard like? We requested a booth, they gave us a table (while the two booths next to us remained unseated for the duration of our dinner). Also, we were never presented with a cocktail menu, which they are supposed to be known for their drinks. it was not crowded at it took EONS for drink refills, the dessert, the check. Started off with salad. Not a good start the ranch dressing sucks. It is store bought and poor quality. The bread is not homemade. The gumbo was alright, but pasty taste to it. I was expecting better from this place. The tuna was cold, almost frozen. There was no evidence that they seared it here. Very lazy. The service is good and the drinks were spot on. But the quality of the food is poor and lacks flavor If it was not the service this would be a 1 Star, maybe two. I really expected this place to be a leader in high quality and flavor. I suggest a reservation, which is easily done online. Moderately upscale setting, but some people were in jeans. The spinach artichoke dip is amazing and I would go just to order it! The prime rib was also great. My husband had a porterhouse I think, and it was ok. Baked potatoes were definitely lacking. The ranch dressing was terrible and I'd recommend another option if you order a salad. Fair prices for the quality. Server didn't time our appetizer, salads, and entrees well and we ended up with all three within about 8 mins of each other. There was a guitar player that added a tad of romance to the setting. Our intent was to stop in for a quick lunch during our holiday shopping excursion, but little did we know our experience would be bugging us all day. The vintage look of the building provides an interesting ambiance to the dining experience and perhaps it was the old rustic space that contributed to our difficulty. We ordered sliders, a burger, a club sandwich, and a children's plate that included some fruit...typical luncheon fare. The service was prompt, attentive, and cordial. The food was average, there was nothing spectacular, but we didn't order anything extravagant, so the expectations were low. The problem emerged when our child at the table began eating their fruit. The fruit, which seemed fresh enough, had a BUG...yes a BUG, on the underside of the cut fruit. It was disgusting. As you can imagine we called this to the attention of the waitress, she like us, was horrified! They apologized, took the fruit, and after a short while the manager appeared. They apologized, stated they would take care of the meal. I understood that to mean our entire bill, as it turns out that meant $10 for the child's meal. I didn't want to invest the time, energy, or effort to argue the issue. All of us had lost our appetite and were ready to depart. So, I paid the bill and we left. We are from Chicago. We are accustomed to exceptional dining experiences, but this experience is beneath the level of satisfaction for anyone from anywhere. I want to believe this is an isolated incident, but I believe it could have been handled better. When we visit the town of Fort Wayne, Indiana, you can be sure we will not be dining at Don's Old Gas House, for it is a dining memory that should be exterminated from my mind. read more

I grew up in Fort Wayne, one block from Hall's Prime Rib on East State Street. Bottom line...I was back in town last week for a week of R&R and met some high school buddies at the Gas Haus. Potato was lukewarm but the mushrooms were soooo tasty and the filet mignon was actually done right! The Dragonfly IPA was terrific, not too hoppy, but it definitely tastes like an IPA. This was my second visit to The Gas House and it was honestly better than the first. The only reason they did not get 5 stars was due to an under cooked filet. Our table had the lobster tail, prime rib x 3, chicken sandwich and 8oz filet; all wonderful with the exception of the above mentioned temperature on the filet. Find a reason to get their blue cheese dressing; it was delicious. The baked bread and whipped butter is a wonderful accompaniment to the salad. My nephew absolutley loves their chicken sandwich. Our drinks from the bar were on point & Olivia provides exceptional service. The Gas House will always be our special occasion restaurant when we visit family in Fort Wayne. read more

Ate here with my mother for lunch the other day. Staff was friendly and helpful. The atmosphere was nice too. Lots of cozy dark furnishings. They serve you breadsticks to start with (we were given one each), and I wonder if they are fried they were quite greasy and crunchy. Vaguely reminded me of an unglazed donut. I'm not sure I have an opinion on the breadsticks. I had a Caesar salad with the seared Tuna. The salad had too much dressing (but the dressing was good), so I would get it again, but ask for dressing on the side. The seared tuna was...lacking. It just didn't have a lot of flavor. My mother had the grilled chicken club with fries. Both were quite good (yeah, I steal food from my dining companions - guard your plate when eating out with me!). The sandwich was HUGE. The toast was buttered, so between that and the bacon, I cannot imagine it was any good for her heart health. She was super hungry though, so she did manage to eat almost all of it. Very impressive. I was there for lunch on 3/28/19. Great atmosphere, reasonably priced menu. However, the Greek salad was not good at all. I've never had a Greek salad with diced beets on it and what appeared to taste like italian dressing, not Greek dressing. The salad was soaked in dressing which I poured off along with taking off the beets but the beets had already made the dressing taste sweet which was very off putting especially with the Kalamata olives and feta (the only ingredients associated with Greek salad on the plate). The salad should have been made with Romaine (not salad greens), cucumber, and red onion along with the olives and feta, and not have any of those weird peppers or beets on it. And use actual Greek salad dressing, not whatever it was you used. It should taste like garlic and lemony, not sweet. read more
