Today I was feeling the need for comfort food. Life has a way of forcing us to chill, take stock, refocus and then reset. Needing comfort food and being in downtown FtW just don't match. You can have trendy, quick, easy, semi gourmet meals, but comfort, there's not much to choose from. That's immediately when I thought of Halls Guesthouse. I stopped in the Guesthouse shortly after 1pm and it was still pretty packed. I quickly noticed the patio near the entrance and the beautiful door. I was at this point reassured I'd made the best choice. I walked in and a lovely young woman with a quick smile helped me right away. I told her I was in need of a comfort meal and she said "I know, it's the weather". I chose the Spicy Gumbo, there's no picture because I wasted no time eating my bowl of comfort soup. It was spicy delicious goodness. The soup was full of flavor with just the right about of broth/rice/shrimp mixture. It was everything I needed at that moment by way of food. The ambiance at the Guesthouse of packed with a rustic charm. A throwback to a true dining and relaxing environment. Service was excellent, on a day when things seem to be going at warp speed, I valued the hands on service I received. I'll be back for the gumbo again. read more

Everything was excellent. We had the fried Brussel sprouts and they were so good. We also had the Reuben sand which and the portobello sandwich. Both very good. We would definitely go back. read more

We were visiting from out of town and we were intrigued by the name and concept. We were warmly welcomed and seated. Our waitress promptly came over to take our drink orders. The menu has a great variety. The children's menu has a decent variety too and it offers foods that they will enjoy at a great value. We settled on our selections and the waitress returned quickly to take our order. We didn't wait long for our food at all which was fantastic because we had kiddos with us and we were starving! Quick and friendly service is appreciated and we received that at the Old Gas House along with fantastic food. We recommend the parmesan chicken sandwich and the Kentucky burger. The parmesan bread was delicious and the burger patty was flavorful and juicy. Some menu items are priced a bit higher but there are plenty of affordable options too and the portions are fair. We will stop in again if in the area and recommend you give it a try. read more

With just a single night in town while on business in the area, and after doing an extensive Yelp review, two things attracted me to Don Hall's Old Gas House Restaurant in Downtown Fort Wayne: 1. The diversity of the menu offerings 2. The atmosphere of hundred year old natural brick walls and generally cool digs The "Gas House" came through in a big way with great food and overall experience. A co-worker and I enjoyed a trio of appetizers of Crab Cakes, a bowl of Shrimp and Sausage Gumbo and an order of Loaded Steak Fries (w/ bacon, bleu cheese, green onions and signature spicy mayo). All contained very generous portions and were excellent. For entrees, we gabbed an order of Jambalaya Risotto and a Shaved Prime Rib Philly sandwich filled with onions, roasted red peppers and white cheddar. My co-worker swore the Jambalaya rivaled the best that N'awlins has to offer and the Phil-town was 'right there'. This place is a mixed bag. It's a nice building with a good theme going on inside. I was seated right in the path of an air vent, so I regretted not bringing a jacket. Service was kind of slow. I'm not sure if they're simply short on employees like everyone else right now or what, but it took a very long time to get drink orders in. I got a Caesar salad and it had onions and tomatoes in it, which was kind of weird. It tasted fine once I picked that out. The steak was actually very good as well as the mashed potatoes, so no complaints there. The steak temperature was on point. I ordered creme brulee for dessert and that was very bad. I'm not sure if the custard did not have a chance to set or if they torched the top too much and liquified it. Either way, that was very bad. Some of the other desserts were enjoyed by others, though. Overall, they need some help with servers and some instruction on making a salad and creme brulee. I got the black and bleu burger cooked medium. Perfectly medium, and the carmelized onions had a rich sweet flavor. Service started off a bit rocky but our server quickly redeemed herself over some stimulating conversation about pickled vegetables. Came into town to eat here with family and 2 little 2 year olds. I was hesitant (because of the 2 year olds) but staff made us feel right at home. They know kids! We barely sat down and they has applesauce and bread sticks to keep them entertained as we explored the amazing menu. The kids lunch is huge, plenty for dinner tonight. Dont be mislead by my review, they cater to adults as well. The food was nicely priced and quality. This is a definite place to be while in Fort Wayne. The breadsticks! Seems like just a stick of dough, but here, they're heavenly. I have only been with my bus groups, so we've always utilized a prix-fixe menu to help keep things moving quickly. I always end up getting the pecan crusted chicken salad with raspberry vinaigrette. It's the best! The filet sliders always look good, too. Portions are large! Try the raspberry iced tea, too. Have been going here for years and I will say that the food is good. It is the selection that I am not happy about. It used to be that I could walk in the bar at lunch and get prime rib ,that is no longer an option. Could not get a baked potato till after 4pm and now you can no longer get a baked potato at all. When I pay over $35 for a steak I usually have (expect) a baked potato with it. The prime rib can now only be ordered on Fri. and Sat. is also a big letdown to me. $75 for dinner for two with no drinks I think I will find a new place with a better food selection next time. I think I will check the menu at Cork & Cleaver for baked potatoes. read more

Family and I celebrated my birthday on Sat. Feb 4th, 2023, and I loved my visit! The pork tenderloin in a sauce with capers and shallots was divine, our server was very attentive and I'm a big fan of Hall's bacon and maple chile brussel sprouts. However I had two big disappointments. I ordered the Gumbo, with shrimp and sausage and the roux had been burnt, the gumbo definitely had a burnt carbon taste to it. Gratefully, my server took it back and substituted some wonderful sautéed mushrooms with my pork as a side. The other was the asparagus with Hollandaise sauce. The sauce was really just mostly melted butter. Only a hint of the egg and lemon tang was present and that may have been charitable. read more

The food here is pretty average. We got filet mignon sliders as an app which were definitely the best part. My purple haze cocktail was very strong. As for the salad, the tuna was ok but the lettuce seemed old and watery. The wasabi peas had a weird taste, as well. I typically love Asian salads so was surprised to be disappointed. Absolutely fabulous! I got the prime rib and it was like butter, just melted in your mouth & the baked Mac & cheese was so cheesy and smooth! My husband got the Jumbalaya Risotto and as he put it - THEY NAILED IT!! The risotto was perfectly cooked so just complimented the Jumbalaya flavors. Atmosphere was fun and classy, but not stuffy. The wait staff was awesome - we got lost (4 businesses in one locations can get confusing) and the bar staff went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable and walked us where we needed to go! All in all it truly was amazing and a great way to spend our first dinner out in Fort Wayne!! read more

The strong island is STRONG. All the drinks are strong. This place gives you a bang for the buck. Although some may complain for the price of The Deck's signature drinks ($10-12) the amount of liquor in them is equivalent to about 2-3 drinks. Therefore this is a bargain! Less drinks, same amount of liquor. The atmosphere is kickin'. Whether it is a Monday night or a Friday night this place is the spot to be during the summer months. With a cool spot on the river it is a gem of Fort Wayne. It is the first place that comes to mind when thinking about enjoying dinner and a cocktail outside. The food is pretty good. I usually go for the Po Boy. Always choose a side of mac n cheese or tator tots. Either are my heaven after downing some drinks. The deluxe tator tots are amazing--once again especially after a strong island or two. The menu is pretty diverse: ahi tuna, tacos de bele, great salads, and many sandwich options. Large portions and reasonably priced. The space is limited and no reservations so be sure to plan on hitting the bar for a few cocktails before being able to enjoy your meal from your table by the river. There are plenty of chairs and picnic tables to relax while waiting. But I am serious- you will wait 2 hours for a table on a Friday/Saturday night and will usually wait around an hour on other busy nights aka nights with beautiful weather. Bartenders are great, but learn their names and become friends. This bar area is not super spacious and hollering their names will definitely help you get a drink faster. read more

Unbelievingly Disappointing! Pre-pandemic this was a go to restaurant for us for a nice romantic date night or special occasion--with pricing that would reflect as such. Perhaps walking in for a reserved table, bring immediately seated should have been an indicator of things to come. Perhaps the blaring country and pop music and lights cut to full brightness should have been an indicator of things to come. Perhaps the overly tattooed and pierced scattered waitress who brought two glasses of wine to a table of three after we ordered a bottle of something entirely different (and pricier) should have been an indicator of things to come. Perhaps the "handcut" steak ordered medium that was bleeding all over the plate, and if indeed hand cut was the grainiest piece of "fresh" meat I have ever experienced in what was once an upscale steak house, (The DM steak was reminiscent of something off the buffet at the golden corral!) and had to be sent back to be further cooked while the remaining party picked at their plates. Not wanting to ruin what was a birthday special occasion, we remained silent and patient of the poor food and service, until the birthday boy finally put utensils to the plate and said "sorry, I let the first hair go, but I just can't finish this" as he pulled a second prominent hair obviously not the color of any of ours from his meal. When we finally complained of this, our waitress simply said she would take the meal off the bill...no offer for a replacement...no further discussion...no visit from a manager for a simple apology. Needless to say, there are far too many nicer restaurants in Fort Wayne at this point to even give this place another shot at this point. For that matter you can save yourself some hard earned money and probably have a comparable experience at one of the local chain steak buffets! I would welcome some level of explanation from the management of this Halls establishment. I stopped for lunch on a rainy day - my first time in Ft. Wayne. There were several enticing sandwiches and salads on the menu as well as appetizers and larger entrees. I opted for the soup and salad - choosing the sausage and shrimp gumbo and a Greek salad. The gumbo was flavored with herbs, a bit of heat, and nice sized shrimp and cubed sausage, but maybe it was the sausage that made it a little salty. The salad featured 5 assorted pickled peppers and cubed beets- my favorite - as well as Kalamata olives and optional anchovies. The dressing was sweeter than I'm used to on. Greek salad, but it worked! A nice crusty bread stick with butter accompanied the meal, and still the waitress offered crackers! She was sweet and efficient- working the bar area as well as a few tables. Nicely done! I was driving so had an iced tea. If my husband had been with me, I'm sure he would have tried the "8-hour" bbq brisket or pulled pork. Burgers looked huge - quite a decadent variety, and generously portioned entrees included soup or salad. I'd like to return one day when it isn't raining to visit museums and the cathedral, and would try this place again, as well as The Deck, which is an outdoor venue in the same lot on the river. read more

I met an old college friend here on a Sunday early in the afternoon. I was in Auburn; Fort Wayne was roughly halfway between us so we met there and chose the Old Gas House rather by chance. It's located adjacent to a park by one of the rivers. It's in a well-built early 20th-century building. The interior has beautiful woodwork and ceilings. The food was fine. I got the bleu cheese and bacon burger, which was very good. My friend had a salad and some sort of shrimp side dish. She said they were OK, nothing special. The waitress brought her the wrong salad but my friend lived with it. The waitress was very friendly; she obviously knew several of the diners at other tables. We enjoyed a long meal and then went for a walk along the riverside path, which is easily accessible behind the restaurant parking lot. A few years ago, they where known as a place that had gone down hill. Or (referred to as gone down hall)? Since that time, they have "down-sized" the chiefs finding The Gas House is known for steaks, prime rib and the like and it is still very good. new and exciting employees, "for Don Halls". They have a wide-ranging menu from burgers to fillet mignon and from chicken to salmon and we have never had a bad meal despite many, many visits after that first one. We will also say a rare steak is actually cooked rare here, which is worth a LOT of points to us. We have never sent a single thing back here which we sadly cannot say about too many restaurants we have patronized time after time. The Gas House is a busy place, so reserve or do what I recommend, (also call ahead and ask) ,,,, leave your name, a cell number and go wander downtown Fort Wayne or the adjacent Headwaters Park, then come back when the table's ready. A word to management,,,,if you cannot get new table flowers every few days (our waiter said they come every 10 days to 2 weeks) please don't put any out. There was nothing sadder or more comic than having a grand meal and doing it with a small vase of dead carnations in the middle of the table. One word: delicious. We are a family of 5 from out of town who had originally planned on sliders at Powers Hamburger Shop a few blocks away. It was closed so we ventured over to Old Gas House. Wow. We were not disappointed. Our server was awesome and the food was out of this world good. We ordered 2 surf & turf, Cajun shrimp and a few kids meals. Everything was cooked to perfection. Had a great steak at Don Hall's Gas House on 10.26.17. However, certain expectatations were not met, and I am posting my written concern provided to the Gas House below, and Ben Hall's return response. I hope this information will be helpful to other diners until the on-line PDF menu is corrected. "October 26, 2017 Gas House. I had a great Delmonico steak last night. It was prepared to the correct temperature and was one of the best steaks I have had in a long time. This steak was recommended by our waitress. We sat in the bar. However, expectations were not entirely met due to the absence of "Dinner Plates" listed in the PDF version of the on-line menu. The "Dinner Plate" section of the PDF on-line menu appears very similar to the senior menu from Triangle Park. The problem is that I convinced a couple of friends in their 80s to join me for dinner at the Gas House, explaining there was an unlabeled but senior menu on the PDF version of the menu, and this menu could be viewed on-line prior to our visit to the Gas House. After we were seated in the bar and the waitress delivered the menu to us, I requested the senior menu. The waitress said she had worked at the Gas House for 12 years and a senior menu has never existed. Astonishment. What is the "Dinner Plates" on the PDF version of the on-line menu exist for except to cause confusion? The Dinner Plate section of the menu lists Prime Rib for $14, Icelandic Cod for $10, Filet Mignon for $17, and other complete meals as well. A further disappointment was the lack of drink specials. The waitress explained the Gas House hasn't had drink specials for at least two weeks due to a system conversion. I am not sure she expected the drink specials to return. I had a great dinner but the seniors were disappointed, expecting a senior menu similar to the senior menu at Triangle Park. I do not plan to initiate a Yelp review at this time but will revisit this situation once I have received your response, explaining why you offer discounted meals on-line. At the minimum the Gas House is misleading its customers with a phantom menu that exists on-line but not in reality, keeping in mind the waitress with 12 years of Gas House experience under her belt was completely unaware of any senior or discounted menu." Ben Hall's response follows: "Thank you for visiting us at The Gas House...I apologize for any confusion, but the menu you were referring to that you saw online is our lunch menu which is available seven days a week until 4 p.m. I will be following up with our website maintenance folks to be certain that it is accurately labeled so as to prevent anyone from being confused in the future. As far as dedicated seniors menu goes, your server was accurate in her assessment, as we have not had such an offering for approximately 15 years." Mr. Hall is the General Manager of The Gas House. When on-line menus are available, I review them before I visit a restaurant, along with reviewing comments on Yelp, impacting the decision to dine at a restaurant, or not. Dinner Tuesday night in the bar, not crowded at all. Had to wait for service, a party of 4 waited on and drinks served before our party of 2 had our drink order taken, though we were seated long before they arrived, and had same waitress. Ordered a brisket sandwich.My experience with a brisket sandwiches are with slices of beef,but here it is like a maid rite sandwich which like mince meat.Very disappointing. My. dinner partner chicken club had bread so hard it hurt her teeth to bite into it. You know it is bad when the server doesn't bother to ask how is everything. Cocktails and draft Guinness were good and the Guinness poured properly. I think in the future we will take our food and entertainment dollars elsewhere. read more

Tried the shrimp and sausage gumbo as it was one of their signatures but was a little salty for me. The tots deluxe was yummy and the drinks were inexpensive. We want to support local business. We donated to WBOI to also support public radio. We donated at a high enough level to earn a WBOI member card which local businesses have donated a "buy one get one free" to the card. So, when we tried to use this card tonight, the manager said it was not valid on carry out. During this pandemic, we are not really eating in a restaurant. The Deck was full, and we were so happy we had ordered carry out, as it was a 45 min. wait. We had to argue to get the manager to honor the card. The food was okay. read more

My husband and I have dined many times at almost all of the Don Hall's family of restaurants and The Gas House is our favorite by far! Delicious filet and lobster, prime rib, and steaks. Their Sesame Seared Yellowfin Tuna with a Ginger noodle salad and wasabi is AMAZING! Delicious house baked bread, amazing array of salads and sides! Your entree also includes choice of soup, gumbo, or dinner salad & choice of side dish... Some of my favorite sides are: Creamed Spinach, Souffléd Sweet Potatoes,German Fried Potatoes,Asparagus & Hollandaise, Sautéed Mushrooms and Loaded Baked Potato and they are all delicious and plentiful! Their bleu cheese wedge salad and the greek salad are my favorites but they have many others to choose from. Prices are wonderful, the wait staff is always attentive and I've never had a bad experience here. They also have The Deck at The Gas House opened during the warmer months which is great to be able to eat and drink out by the river! Highly recommended! read more

Stopped in last weekend and had the stuffed chicken breast. It was overcooked, very tough and dry. Only a completely unqualified cook would ever make such a rooky mistake. The ambiance of this restaurant is very nice and the service was great. I ordered the Filet Oscar which was ok. The steak was dry and the crab meat they used was not very good quality and fishy. Oscar is traditionally served with Bernaise sauce and not Hollandaise as was indicated in the menu, so I requested the Bernaise sauce instead and they were accommodating. The Bernaise sauce was good and one of my favorites as I seldom find it served in restaurants. My husband ordered the burger which was very flavorful. It would be better to stick with the burger in this case rather than spend the money on a dry filet. read more
