Grilled Shio Koji Black Cod Bento
    Joyce L.

The food itself was very good at this casual and homey restaurant - it was the abrupt service that left me feeling meh... Met a girlfriend here for a weekday lunch, and while her Tempura Bowl and my Grilled Shio Koji Black Cod Bento were tasty and bountiful with a good assortment of sides, we felt rather rushed to order, eat, and leave more quickly than was comfortable. Interestingly, the latter dish came in a plastic takeout container even though we were dining in - perhaps a hint? :P I'd probably only return despite the subpar service if I were able to come right at opening in order to snag one of the extremely limited lunch specials which are a screaming deal!

Small, cozy spot that serves Japanese food. We were seated at the bar and we were only allowed to order sushi from the chef. We asked if we could order chicken karaage and they made an exception for us since it's a small dish.

Came here for a family dinner. When we entered, we were seated immediately. The inside is quite cozy, with plenty of seating. I ordered the Chirashi bowl, which came with some sides and miso soup. I think overall, this is a solid spot. The food wasn't amazing, but definitely filling.

Came here to eat lunch on a weekend. The place is small and cozy. Fast service but after they gave us our meal they never checked on us again. They had a lunch special that looked really good but it's already sold out when we got there. The chirashi bowl looks deceivingly full of assorted fish but think again! The food is okay/good but not sure if I'll be coming back.

IG: @allysxn.eats | great service and comfortable ambiance, but food was average. i got the sukiyaki bowl, which had a nice variety of sides, but the main dish itself was a bit plain and had a lot of rice - i wish there was more beef! otherwise the flavor was pretty good. my friend really likes this dish (and the pasta) though so maybe it is just different for everyone! (also, the parking lot also gets pretty full even on weekdays.)

Wow! What an amazing dining experience. My fiancé and I came in for lunch and we were immediately seated. The service was phenomenal. We got our waters and ordered within 5 minutes. My fiancé got the assorted sushi plate and I got the katsu don plate. We also got the gyozas to share. The sushi plate transported me back to Japan. The fish was extremely fresh and delicious! It melted in our mouths. My katsu came with salad, miso soup, and two other sides. Everything in my katsu bento was exploding with flavor! The gyozas were homemade and again just perfectly seasoned. I wasn't expecting much based on some of the reviews, but it turned out to be one of the best meals I've had in Kearney. Probably up there with Karami Ramen. Definitely intend to be back soon!

I have been coming here regularly for the last 5 years because the food is so amazing. I haven't had any issues with the service, until my most recent visit. It took over 30 minutes to be seated, which is fine since we walked in. However it took over 30 minutes again after taking our order specifically for my chirashi bowl. Once the food finally came out, it didn't disappoint. The uni ikura spaghetti is probably the best one we've tasted yet.

I came on a Sunday during lunch with a friend recommended by a friend. There was a short wait time but not too bad. I ordered an unagi bowl but it came in a set with miso soup, salad, a slice of watermelon, pickled veggies, and a carbonara sample. The unagi was on the thicker side and tasted really good. Loved the seaweed garnish on the rice as well. The miso soup was good, salad had a mustard dressing which was interesting, and the other accompaniments were nice. My friend got a beef udon and it came with a rice ball and pickled veggies. She said it was good. Ambiance is good. Would come back

We had: Chicken Karage appetizer Grilled Mackarel appetizer Oxtail Soup Beef Hash Omelette Meal Miso Grilled Cod Bento Box Spicy Tuna Roll Caterpillar Roll We've been here a couple of times already. It's as close as you can get to Japan. The karage is very crispy and yet so light and airy. This is the only karage in the Convoy district that has flavor even in the meat not just in the coating. It's also very juicy. The sushi rolls were fresh. No fishy or slimy taste or texture. Rice game is on point. The grilled mackarel was well seasoned, tender and had a crispy skin. The cod was so flaky and melts in your mouth. The chef knows how to handle and cook fish better than fancy, expensive restaurants anywhere in San Diego. The oxtail soup had a sizeable meat and really rich broth without being salty. Everything was delicious. Parking is always tough in this lot. The restaurant has a very long wait on Fridays and weekends.

We stumbled upon this place while looking for a quick bite and decided to give it a try despite the mixed Yelp reviews. We got seated right away and ordered the chirashi bowl lunch special ($34) and the pork katsu curry plate ($18). The chirashi set came with a pickle salad, miso soup, scrambled eggs, and agedashi tofu, and the curry plate came with a small salad, a slice of watermelon, and miso soup. The fish/seafood in the chirashi was fresh, and the katsu curry was delicious, especially with the fried onion bits in the sauce. Service was a bit inconsistent with some delays. The place has a nostalgic '90s Japanese-American restaurant vibe, and I noticed a few Japanese diners, which felt like a good sign. Overall, if you keep your expectations realistic about the service, this spot serves solid Japanese comfort food at a good price.

I had the daily lunch bento box which they change the main entrees everyday. That day's main entrees were super delicious. All other side dishes were also tasty and yet different...it's something I don't see in other Japanese restaurants' ordinary bento boxes. I good to also see that the sushi chef and staff are Japanese Would come back again.

Had visited here before 20 years ago specifically for their omelette rice. At that time, they had no sign but the restaurant inside has not changed. The omelette rice did not disappoint and you can see why this is a specialty of Izakaya Sakura. Delicious and comforting. What surprised us were many additional things on this visit. The staff are so genuinely kind and welcoming. Smiles and quick service. Feels like being in a local restaurant in Japan. The sushi it's very high quality. The best California rolls I've had!!! No need for soy sauce. Such delicious creamy flavor from the crab, avocado, and cucumber. Rice cooked and seasoned perfectly. The sushi chefs know their craft. Spicy tuna roll...fantastic! Lastly, the bento box. At $16, it is a lots of food and flavors in one. If you enjoy taking your taste buds on a journey from sour to salty to sweet. You will enjoy this daily lunch bento box that changes daily. Even the draft beer is served in a frozen mug and poured into a perfect pint. Cheers! We'll definitely come back for the bento, sushi rolls, omelette rice, and beer.

Came in for lunch with a friend right as they opened at 11:30. It's reminiscent of a diner style mom and pop restaurant, old school vibes. Seated promptly in a comfy booth and given menus. Shortly our server came and we ordered our entrees along with green tea for the table. I ordered the Bento box (they have a rotating box daily for lunch). So much flavor!! Miso soup, assorted fish, tofu, cucumber salad, rice, coleslaw, katsu chicken. A spectacular meal, very satisfying and reasonably priced at $16. There were many other entree items and I'll definitely be back soon!

Booking was easy through their website. When we arrived around 6:30, and there were still a handful of open tables so reservations may not always be necessary, but it's probably still a good idea. Our server was phenomenal and really elevated the experience. She gave great recommendations and even let us sample both the Cabernet and Merlot when we couldn't decide on a bottle of wine. We ordered a variety of dishes: * Spicy Edamame: very flavorful, but definitely on the spicy side so be warned if you're sensitive to heat. * Fire Fire Roll: light and fresh fish, but the seared salmon flavor didn't really stand out. * Orange Roll: also light and fresh, but I didn't really pick up the citrus/lemon zest element. A bit underwhelming compared to expectations. * Salmon Belly Nigiri: very fresh and a favorite at the table. * Crab Roll Special: generous portion of fresh crab. * Yuzu Cheesecake: served with three spoons to share. It tasted like a classic cheesecake, pleasant, but I didn't really get a distinct yuzu flavor. The space is cute and conveniently located in a shopping center with plenty of parking. Overall, the atmosphere is laid-back and comfortable. While the rolls themselves are fairly simple and not especially standout, everything tasted fresh and the service was excellent, which made the experience enjoyable.

We were first to enter and it was clear immediately that omakase is this restaurants institution; delicate lighting that highlighted the bar that separated diner and chef, clean lines everywhere, and just overall a beautiful place. The theme of Sushi MARU is truly attention to detail, and that extends from arrival, to service, to, of course, the food. Staff were incredibly attentive and easy to talk to, including the chefs. The food, I will comment on just generally as the menu is constantly changing (as is the case with many omakase): each dish was composed of pieces that complemented each other well and created a cohesive flavor pallette. Each nigiri was artfully prepared that emphased the quality and cut of the fish, and were complemented by flavors to further highlight that. The flow of the evening was non-traditional omakase, but it felt perfect. Price ($180pp) is not for the faint of heart, but is cheaper than others I've seen. Would absolutely visit again for a special occasion!

Unlike several of the other Michelin guide or Michelin Star sushi establishments, they offer more than just Omakase. While the do offer Full Omakase for $189, Nigiri Omakase for $140, and Petite Omakase for $65, they also allow you to order nigiri, sashimi along with multiple other specials and cut rolls. On our first walk in experience, we ordered the Petite Omakase which included 4 seasonal dishes, 6 pieces of sushi, a light fish broth, and a small dessert, we also ordered some add-on sushi. On our first reservation here, we opted for the Full Omakase, which was absolutely amazing. This is meant to be opinionated criticism to help improve but I think the dishes could use more diversity and depth. Having done a fair share of omakase from places like Kinme and Matoi, I feel like this isn't that much more memorable or special and I'd hate for it to follow the same path Tadokoro did where they were absolutely my #1 choice and fell after they got their star (which they later lost). Both sushi chefs are super personable, very skilled, and they have rad knife skills! Service from the waitstaff was attentive yet unobtrusive. The restaurant is diminutive and consists primarily of the sushi bar with 10 seats and an attached patio dining area. They do have a small parking lot which is appreciated! The pacing was just right, and each course was presented simply yet beautifully. I truly enjoyed this experience and give it my highest possible accolades! I loved that we were able to taste test three different sakes before choosing, and the carafe of sake was perfect for two of us to enjoy with our meal. There was no wait here but parking was a nightmare and there is almost no street parking right around the restaurant which is near the trolley tracks. I recalled coming here for a light dinner with my husband many years ago and thinking it was good, but expensive. I asked if they had Japanese soda for my daughter because it was not on the menu, and they said no, but after we came back from the bathroom the host had found one for us. They gave us chopstick helpers and were very nice. We ordered braised pork belly as an app and wagyu nigiri, albacore, hamachi, salmon belly, 2 salmons, and unagi. I think that was all. They nicely split the order so half had no wasabi for the kid. They were very considerate and I appreciated it. The food however took a while to come out. The braised pork belly was ok, but the fat had not rendered as well as at some other places so we ate around it. The flavor was good though. The hamachi was probably the best item-tender and tasty. The albacore was standard and a generous piece, but the salmon was a bit tough and my kid who usually inhales salmon tasted and then left the salmon. The wagyu had good flavor but was surprisingly chewy. For $26 I would expect it to melt in your mouth but it was not easy to bite through. The eel was very tender but had a weird taste, and was disappointing. I found myself chewing on a scale from maybe the salmon and was overall underwhelmed by the food. The bill for a soda and the sushi came to almost $150 after tax and tip for me and a 6-year old. Usually my husband and I and my kid go to places with better quality and pay the same price for the three of us. Will not be back.

The sashimi champaloo came with 12 pieces of sashimi, salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and the fish of the day was albacore. For rolls, we got the Luna Lemon, Maru's Sushi Toro, and Hamachi Hiro. The rolls were a good size and I loved how each had a fun twist (but at the same time not TOO crazy with their combinations like some other sushi places). You can tell it was designed with intention and each roll had a nice balance. The Luna Lemon roll was great with spicy tuna inside, salmon outside, and the soy dressing and shallot oil put it over the top. The Maru's Sushi - Toro roll looked so good in the photos so I knew we had to order it. The negitoro was delicious and did not disappoint. The Hamachi Hiro roll was hearty and loved the combination of yellowtail outside the shrimp tempura in the inside. We were blown away by how fast the service is. The staff was friendly and on top of everything, and the food came out REALLY fast. For example, when we ordered an extra roll at the end, it came out in maybe 3 minutes and we were shocked. Highly recommend!

We ordered takeout, and the food was packaged well!…read more We ordered the: -Sashimi champloo ($31.95): This had twelve pieces of prime cuts of salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and chef's choice. Every piece was delicious! -Chirashi bowl ($30.95): I really enjoyed the sushi rice in this bowl since not every restaurant does quality sushi rice. The sashimi was pretty good, but quality wise the sashimi champloo was definitely superior. -Salmon mango roll ($9.50): This had spicy salmon, mango, and ume furikake. This was quite tasty, and definitely had a kick to it. -Maru Maru roll ($9.50): This had imitation crab meat, shrimp tempura, and avocado. A basic roll but still good. -Chicken katsu curry don ($16.95): This was disappointing because the portion was quite small for the price. I do like how the curry was packaged separately. All in all, Hakumaru has quality sashimi and rolls, but could work on portion size for chicken katsu curry don.

We knew it was popular and it was recommended to make reservations well in advance which we did. When you get to the hostess stand on ground level, she greeted us warmly and directed us to the elevator that would take us to Lumi. Once at the top, you're greeted by the Lumi staff to check you in. As you get to view the roof top, there are lots of tables, a strategically placed bar, some fireplace tables, comfortable seating, a live DJ, and beautifully done murals and deco. Very tasteful! The food was amazing and so fresh! If you don't like sushi, Lumi has a lot of dishes that would also accommodate your palette. Appetizers, sushi, and drinks were all great. Prices is a little high but keep in mind that you're also paying for the experience! The staff were all friendly and our host Becky was so sweet and attentive! She checked in on us regularly and gave us great recs! Highly recommend!
