if you haven't been to Don Quixote or never heard of this famous grocery store, you are definitely missing out. I've been to the grocery store when it was named Daiei before the name was changed to Don Quixote. Because this location closer to me since I'm live in town, it is way busier since it is central to Hawaii Convention Center, Ala Moana Shopping Center, and Waikiki. Store is massive, but not as massive as the Mega Don Quixote locations in Japan. Fresh fish, bentos, Japanese sushi and varieties okazuya selection. Choices are endless, it is so easy to indecisive and stay here more than 1 hour. There are also a variety of small take out restaurants outside of the store in case nothing is appetizing at Don Quixote. Parking can be difficult if you come during mid morning, lunch time rush, or after work time. Parking is either in front of store or their 2 level parking structure, or street parking. read more

My first time visiting this store. I didn't even know what it was. My wife mentioned it while we were driving and I was like "when did you eat there, was it any good?", thinking it was a Mexican restaurant. She said that it wasn't a restaurant, it's a store, Asian store. So we went in. Man, the place was huge and had just about everything from gifts and trinkets, toys, health and beauty aids, home improvement, beach goods, house wares, sundries, to food from different cultures (Japanese, Chinese, Philippines). They have bread, a bakery, drinks, alcohol, frozen and cold foods, ice cream, chips, candy, soda - just about everything you would need. The staff are super nice. One of the coolest things was through the end of July, they had a 5% off coupon for your order, and the other cool thing was they had loads of Bandai and other Gundam stuff, some car model kits, even some Bandai Macross stuff. Prices on food items were reasonable (not like Walmart, but cheaper than ABC). We will probably end up coming here again next time we are in the isles. read more

After enjoying my friend's reunion brunch, our friends asked me to drive here on our way back to their hotel. Driving there was a challenge with an emergency that prompted four police cars and traffic being stopped at Kapiolani near Kalakaua for a couple minutes. When we reached the parking lot here, I pulled into the parking lot which was filled with several cars driving around looking for an available space. Seeing a cluster of cars not moving in the center, I headed to the furthest aisle and made a turn to the next aisle in waiting for a departing customer's space. It's probably been about eight or nine years since I've walked into the market and, boy oh boy, what a change and difference. My 1st reaction was how it reminded me of Wal Mart, both in the variety of products and mainly the size of the store. My first stop was the toy department, check that, Japanese toy section. Don Quijote is a Japanese discount store chain that sells basic groceries, household goods, beauty products, bedding, toys, electronics, clothing, and general merchandise. In 2021, there were 160 locations in Japan, 13 in Singapore, 8 in Hong Kong, 3 in HI, and 1 each in Macau and Guam. As I predominantly shop at the Honolulu store on Kaheka St., this review is for that store (the other two locations are in Pearl City and Waipahu). Don Quijote was founded by Takao Yasuda with the opening of its 1st store in Tokyo in Sept. 1980. It entered HI in 2006 when it acquired the Daiei stores. Don Quijote purchased the Marukai chain stores in the US in 2013, and the stores either became Marukai or Tokyo Central Markets. In HI, Don Quijote bought Marukai HI, Times Supermarkets, Shima's, Fujioka's Wine Times, and the Big Save Markets on 9/30/13; however, other than the 3 Daiei stores that were renamed Don Quijote, the other stores retained their original names, but the branding changed to become consistent with Don Quijote marketing requirements. Marukai, Times, and Shima's carry some of the identical items as Don Quijote and also takes part in the same promotions. Also known in Japan as "Donki," it is able to purchase from overseas at wholesale prices to offer discount prices to shoppers. Its official mascot is Donpen, which is a blue penquin that wears a red nightcap. The name of "Donpen" is based on the store's name (Don), and the Japanese name for penquin (pen). The moon is sometimes depicted with the penquin, which is a symbol of lightening the midnight towns. So, it is no surprise that this Don Quijote in Honolulu is open 24 hours and many in Japan are open until the wee hours of the morning or even open for 24 hours, which differs in the retail industry in that most stores close around 9p or 10p. Jonetz is Don Quijote's product brand that was created in 2009 and means "passionate prices" that refers to the affordability of its items to its customers. When Don Quijote took over this Daei Store, renovations were made to accommodate the increase in items brought in from Japan. Many people disliked how items were stacked to the brim and how every space was made use of. This store was very bright and well lit. However, as with the Japan stores, artificial vines and floral décor hung from every space in the ceiling. Yes, it was an unusual shopping experience which made Don Quijote known for what they were; however, this did not last long in HI, as strict fire regulations prohibit these ceiling hangings due to fire safety requirements. Shucks, and I enjoyed this colorful décor! One of the popular sections in this store is its okazukya section. Hot items offered on rotation include: chicken (karaage, nishime, curry, Korean, kalua pork & cabbage, shoyu); starches (baked spaghetti, fried rice, yakisoba, pancit); green beans & pork; shoyu pork; roast pork; beef stew; baked ham w/ pineapple; corned beef & cabbage; pork & eggplant w/ miso; mapo tofu; sweet sour spareribs, pork & peas, tripe stew; tempura items. There is also a huge selection of regular-sized and mini bentos, sushi, sashimi, musubi, salads, and side dishes. Senior discounts are provided for ages 60 and over from 6a to 7a daily and all-day Tuesday. The discounts vary depending on the items and excludes sale items, liquor, tobacco, and seasonal items. A weekly sales ad displays items on sale online and on a glossy flyer that can be picked up at the store. Popular items sell out often, but you can get a raincheck, good for 30 days, from the friendly staff at Customer Service that is located by the cashiers. To make this a one-stop shopping experience, Don Quiote also has an in-house pharmacy and contracts with various vendor inside and outside its store. It has a laundromat; nail salon; restaurants (Korean, Greek, Thai, ramen, local plate lunches, bentos, Chinese, inari sushi, wagyu beef, andagi, coffee; takoyaki & noodles); cosmetics; heathcare; cell phone accessories; cab services, bike share. Free parking is available in the uncovered lot adjacent to the store and a covered lot across the street. Despite the abundant number of parking spaces, the spaces fill up quickly with shoppers, and drivers are always circling around for parking spaces. It's a horrendous experience circling the parking lots, and you just have to be lucky when someone is pulling out of a space. I enjoy shopping at Don Quiote, whether to browse through the many interesting local items and merchandise from Japan and to buy items that I want. It's also good to know that much of the inventory is the same as those sold at Marukai Hawaii and Times Supermarkets. This is normally my go to store that I shop at when shopping with my dad and we go every once in awhile. Today was such an inconvenience... our bagger who was a short stubby lady who is normally there when we shop was packing our groceries for us. We had fresh peeled garlic and while she was handling that , all of the garlic flew in the air landing on the floor and in one of our shopping bags. She didn't really apologize and just kept saying "I don't know how the bag opened up". Completely careless .. I get they have a rough job and all. But if you're in the wrong you should at least be self aware and admit so. And instead of going to get a new one for us or having one of the other employees go , she was trying to make me or my father go and grab a new one and said " it's already been charged anyway". I wasn't gonna go out of my way to walk all the way on the other side of the store when she was in the wrong. And who is she to try and make a customer do so?! Our cashier was an older japanese lady who is a worker that's there most of the time we come too. And im unsure if we caught her on a bad day when that happened as she was our cashier, she was looking at us like WE WERE THE PROBLEM.. and NOT HER CO WORKER... kept giving us a dirty look and a " I don't want to be here look".. well then stay home? Ask to stock items? I don't know... anywho.. we told the cashier to take off the item and to cancel out the garlic since they don't prioritize customer service here. The short stubby lady offered to go and grab it herself , now that should've been the first thing she should've done for us.. but didn't .. waited too late .. welp... I told her it was fine and to forget it as I was agitated and I could tell my father was too.. If we do ever return I hope we never get her again as a bagger.. super lazy and unprofessional. I hate to shop and I will be the first to admit it. I'm not that person that wanders the aisles for hours looking for the bargain items. I know what I want and can usually zero in, pick it up and get out without picking up any other items. Today I just needed a roll of Christmas wrapping paper and a roll of scotch tape. Dropping off Sofie to be groomed I first stopped by the bank to get cash to pay her ransom then pulled into DQ to get the two items I needed. This store is pure chaos in my honest opinion. The aisles are mismarked so a person just weaves in and out until finding the item someplace you'd never expect. Boxes of wrapping paper were randomly placed everywhere, logically you'd think they'd place tape with it....nope! The aisle marked "tape" is construction tape, Gorilla tape, Duck tape. Stopped a wandering associate and she was clueless. She said she'd get someone else who knew stock to help me but after five minutes and no help appearing I continued to search. Was it with Stationary? Nope. Was it with party supplies? Nope. Finally found it with a small aisle of little note pads next to crayons. WTH would it be there? Grabbing two rolls of tape w/dispensers that I didn't need I headed to check out. Logically one would choose self-checkout but since that was ten people deep I went to the shortest checkout line. Two people before me. Friendliest checkout associate ever but please stop talking and get the customers out. I should not be in a checkout line for over fifteen minutes and that's not an exaggeration. Is this craziness just indicative of the holiday, absolutely not, it's like this every time I've bern here. This store is pretty big and has just about everything, plus it's all reasonably priced!! Good place to stock up on snacks, chocolates, and li hing candies! Aside from grocery store items, they have ready to eat foods including bento plates, bowls, sushi, and there is also a small food court area right outside the store with plenty of seating. If you're visiting the island, this is a must stop. Do not go to the local ABC stores if you want to buy the Hawaiian Host chocolates, way too expensive. Here you'll get an amazing deal. The deals are spread across all isles and into the food court they have inside. You could get everything from poke, to king crab nigiri, and a 4 combo plate. The food is amazing. The staff is amazing and helpful. Shoot they were handing out free samples of Heineken. The best part about Don Quijote, it's an 24hr spot! That means if you get some late night craving for some snacks or taking a late night flight out and forgot to buy some souvenirs, don't worry, they have you covered. This Donki is much more of a grocery store than I was expecting. After exploring the glory of a 7 story Donki in Tokyo, this location was a huge letdown. I came armed with a long list of items I needed to replenish that I bought in Tokyo, but I only found a few of those things in Honolulu. Strangely I never went to Don Quijote until a friend visiting from Osaka came and needed omiyage. We used to shop at Marukai regularly until they were bought out and with all the rail construction etc it became not benri or convenient. I like the wide variety of Japanese skin care products...goat's milk seems to be the NBT. They also do have alot for omiyage kind of like Hilo Hatties meets ABC store. What surprised me was the fresh produce section it was well stocked and looked appealing at decent prices. Nice selection of pickles. They have a deli section like Marukai with hot and cold selections. Decent price and presentation. We had Inari sushi, chicken bento. The food stalls in front are also tempting and I like the Japanese style bakery at the entrance. Now I know where to go if I miss Japan. I cannot believe after 20 years of visiting Hawaii, I only now found out about this heavenly store! I was looking for grocery stores in the area and found Don Quijote; I spent almost 2 hours browsing the aisles and I felt like a kid in a candy store. The selection of prepared food was astonishing, especially the fresh fish and low prices- the store has everything anyone could need from car accessories to a quick lunch. FOOD POISONING!!!! Was in the hospital for 3 days, got poke from the meat section and then the next day I went to the hospital. Hospital confirmed that it was cross contamination from bacteria found in land animals. Clearly they don't sanitize cutting boards properly. This Don Quijote location is not exactly in the best part of town as there are many homeless people that loiter and yell at you while you pass them. If you can get past that part then you're good to go. Their sushi and poke are wonderful. Even their snacks are great too and yes, these are the same snacks you'll find at ABC and Long's Drugs. I enjoyed my trip there. While it feels less organized and far less clean than the ones in Japan, it does the job. For all the anime fans, check out the Gundam kits while you're at it too. My nephew came into this place without a shirt on. It was completely our oversight, we only learned it wasn't allowed to be shirtless when the security lady saw us. We simply hadn't noticed the sign when we walked in. She was very stern about telling him to leave and get dressed. I went to get his dad since he was not with us at the time, but instead of waiting, she started looking around for us, which made it feel like we were being treated as if we had done something serious. Of course, I didn't argue since we were in the wrong. I understand that rules are rules, but this was an honest mistake and could have been handled with a bit more understanding, especially since it involved a child. A more friendly yet still assertive approach would have made the situation much better. read more

Would you believe we've never been to a Don Quijote until just last week? I'd heard about it from friends but the opportunity never presented itself. We used our GPS coming from Kapolei where we were staying. As we approached we saw metered parking. We parked and headed toward the store. That's when we saw the parking garage across the street from the store entrance. Oh well. As we entered the store we were impressed with the humongous inventory. Supermarket, and much more. We were drawn to the souvenir section as we were tourists visiting from the mainland. So many bags to choose from. Large, small, insulated, and cute designs. I spent most of my time eyeing the prepared foods. I ended up buying inari sushi and peanut butter mochi as we already had a lunch reservation in Waikiki. Other food items that caught my eye were the poke bowls and the inari bombs. After using the self check out we took our snacks out to the outdoor food court. Our snacks were onolicious.
