Found this restaurant by searching Yelp for breakfast in Carlsbad. I had to make a trip down there Saturday morning and figured I should have breakfast somewhere new, too. As we walked in, a Carlsbad police officer walked in the other door. I have "Law Enforcement Survival Kits" in my trunk which are just a silly little poem with a bunch of different candies with explanations of why they are in the bag. I ran out to get one, and gave it to the officer. I thanked him for what he does, and gave him the bag. Another officer came in, and they were talking about the bag, and smiling so I went to get him one too. So, back to the restaurant, haha. They opened at 7 and we got there about 6:59. A few of the tables filled up, and we were helped right away. Since it was our first time there, we took some time to figure out what we wanted. I ordered the waffle with the banana and nut addition, that came with bacon and eggs. It was amazing! My friend ordered the pancake with the apple and cinnamon addition and a side of bacon. I didnt try it but it looked so good! Actual pieces of apple. The service was amazing, the coffee tasted so good and fresh and the food was amazing. LOVED this place!!! If the local police eat here, you know its good. Thats always a sign of good food. I will drive back down this way to come back! I have not been here since I was a kid; Don's Country Kitchen is the kind of place you just get used to seeing every time you drive to the beach or wander around downtown Carlsbad. It may not be a common destination, I don't think anyone in the family typically says, "Sunday, time for Don's!" Still, if it was't there, you'd notice ... maybe even miss it. If only because you couldn't remember what place was next to the donut shop and you wished, for the life of you, that you could think of the name. That may sound weird or a bit mean, but it's also indicative of the food here. It's not great. It's not horrible. It just is. Came here for a family breakfast, my lady love wanted to try something new, and it has nice outside seating where our son can be a toddler and not catch the ire of too many people. Very nice service, happy and quick, we ordered and got our drinks and food in good time. I got a Pancake Special - One pancake with scrambled eggs and some turkey sausage. The pancakes are good, salty and sweet with butter and warm syrup to go with it, and the sausage is alright for turkey, but the eggs are just bland. No salt or pepper, no seasoning to make them anything more than your standard yellow fluff on the plate. I'm not saying it has to have a perfect blend of basil and whisk to make them airy; it just feels like this and other items on our table were made purely for sensitive stomachs. I know that this is kind of the point, when most of your clientele doesn't like surprises it behooves you to lay off the spice. I just don't count myself as part of that clientele ... not for another 30 years or so, at any rate. My girlfriend chose the Oklahoma Scramble, an aptly named platter of potatoes, sausage, eggs, and a side of biscuits, all smothered in country gravy. I'm an American, I grew up here, I am ethnically predisposed to loving gravy in any way, shape, or form. But at Don's, just like the eggs on my own plate, the gravy was extremely bland. When you eat gravy, especially the copious amount that this place pours on their food, you're probably shaving a good day or two off of your life span. That noble sacrifice should be for something more than a few spoonfuls of flavorless grease. Gravy should be salty, warm and creamy, with a hint of pepper on the back end for a little heat; not this tasteless lubricant. I think this alone is what disappointed me more than anything. Anyway, nice service, large portions, but blah to just kinda alright food. A Carlsbad institution that I'm sure will be around for a long while to come, Don's Country Kitchen may be worth a try if you're downtown and starving for something other than Denny's. I came here because it was one of the best Yelp reviewed breakfast restaurants in Oceanside. So my expectations were high up and let me tell you... it did not disappoint. First heading to Don's Country Kitchen, you can feel it in the atmosphere that this place knows what it's doing due to how crowded it was. The waitresses are very nice. The eggs Benedict special that I ordered was super delicious. The eggs were cooked perfectly that when you slice it the yolk falls out. The hollandaise sauce was so delicate that it matched perfectly with the salty Canadian bacon. But their hash browns are what did it for me. It was crispy on the outside but so soft on the inside. I tried so many hash browns and these are one of the best I ever had. The strawberry waffles were average to me. I thought it was too hard for me. This has been a family favorite for years. My father always brings me here and we always order the biscuits and gravy. The staff's always sweet and very persistent when it comes to making sure your coffee is filled, making sure you have the utensils you need as well as cleaning the table before you sit down even if its been cleaned already. After eating park food for a whole week it was so nice to sit down and eat good food at a place like this. It was a great stop before Legoland! We parked in the lot next to the restaurant. The restaurant itself is not so big and looks family run, which is always the best kind. They really bent over backwards to try and accommodate our large party in their small space. The food was amazing! I had the stuffed hash browns and it exceeded my expectations on taste. Everyone in our party ordered something different and no one was disappointed. Came here this morning hungry from beach camping, but was too lazy to make breakfast. When we first came in, I was ready to leave the place right away. There was a very strong smell of bleach. This morning was our first time eating at Don's in about 4 years. I could've sworn the food was better, or perhaps I was romanticizing it in my mind. I ordered the country fried steak with biscuits & gravy, and hash browns. The hash browns were exceptional, and perfectly cooked, however the chicken fried steak was flavorless, and the biscuits & gravy arrived cold. The biscuits had a very congealed texture, and the room temp sausage gravy didn't do it any favors. My wife ordered the Don's omelette, and was completely underwhelmed by the flavor. The presentation and size was great, but again, the flavor just didn't come through. It's never a good sign when you're reaching for the salt shaker 7-8 times during your breakfast. Service was hurried, and our waitress seemed to have no interest in making us feel welcomed, even though she was putting on the charm for what I expect were locals. Cracks me up since I was born and raised in Carlsbad from 1974 onward. Oh well... Another thing regarding the overall comfort level in this place. Today was an unusually hot day in Carlsbad (80's around 9am) and even with the ceiling fans going full speed, it felt like hell inside the dining area. Easily feeling like 85 degrees with little to no fresh air circulation, even though we were sitting by the side door. Definitely not worth the trip back. Found this place on Yelp. I ordered a #4 (two eggs/3 sausage or bacon/hashbrowns/toast ect). I got scrambled eggs, turkey bacon, hash browns, and coffee cake. First of all the coffee cake is amazing. Most coffee cake is dense and super sugary but this one was light and didnt feel like I just stuck a spoonful of brown sugar in my mouth. The eggs were fluffy and the Turkey bacon was CRISPY! Most places serve turkey Bacon that's limp and sad but theirs was thin and crisp. Hashbrowns were pretty thick and the coffee was smooth and not acidic. Only qualm was the $$$. Total was about $30 just for me. I'd definately come back for the coffee cake though. read more
