Took vehicle in for AC not working on a Tuesday. Service person recommended bringing in on Thursday. Brought vehicle in on Thursday at around 11am. Mechanic asked if I needed vehicle back quickly (Had Backup) so not necessary. Replaced Compressor and recharged system. Was ready next day. Would highly recommend! Highest priced gas by far in the area, which is a red flag if you think about it. And repair work is good but they will do work and/or replace things you didn't authorize, or say they replaced things which they did not, all of which is against state law and as such does not have to be paid. For example, my ac wasn't working. They injected dye to find a possible leak, but it didn't include checking for the leak as that would be a separate work order, which I never asked for or authorized. Makes no sense, either unless you follow up to check for leaks as one job. They also claim to have replaced two valves, which also were not authorized, and the high pressure one wasn't needed at all, and the low pressure one is leaking 6 months later? Hmmm. Finally, to add insult, they replaced the low pressure cap that wasn't needed -- the original was fine. Nickel and dimed. read more

I love Don's Sunoco - You can trust them. They aren't cheap, good mechanics are not going to be cheap. But, they are fair. They will not charge you $80 for changing a lightbulb - They are knowledgeable, friendly and super helpful! We love this gas station - their customer service reminds us of the good old days. Don's is my local station, and although their gas may be a few cents higher than the other nearby stations, there are a few reasons I keep going back: - Pump quality - the cheaper American Eagle up the street has the worst pumps...they shut off too soon. - Cleanliness - not that I've ever used the restroom, but this station is a good neighborhood citizen...they keep their lot & grounds looking about as good as an active gas station can. - Service - I've *never* had a shady repair from these guys, and I take my two old VWs there all the time for inspections. They check everything over as they should, but they never try to claim something as needing repair that's not faulty or overly worn (and I'd know). I do feel like I can trust them. - Extras - Though it was sad when they converted their free air pump to a pay one a few years back, Don's gets points for always having window cleaning squeegees and paper towels in their holders. Many stations try to cheap out on these much-appreciated extras. Side story - one time my new car picked up a screw in the front tire. It was in the treat area and plug-able, but I was in a hurry. The mechanic had me position the tire in a certain way and he removed the screw and plugged the hole while it was still on the car. He suggested I swap that one to the rear, which I did, and it never leaked again. Super fast and very reasonably priced repair. Thanks for the great service! read more

I've been coming here for my state (and when it calls for it, emissions) inspection since I've gotten my car (about 4 years now). Every time I come, I have been out of there within 20 minutes. This is a small Sunoco, nothing fancy, no frills. They sell your standard gas station soda and a limited number of snacks (think chips and Hostess products) which can give you something to munch on, should you be so hungry. Staff is competent and pretty friendly, a little country, but friendly. I've had talks about the cemetary across the street, Blackberrys and crime rates while waiting, and as a customer that's kind of refreshing to be kept engaged instead of totally ignored. All in all- good prices, very competent. I spent a little less than $60 for two replacements bulbs, emission, and state inspection (plus labor). read more

I brought a set of loose wheels and tires in here because I wanted the tires dismounted from their wheels. Not mounted and balanced - dismounted. As in simply removed from the wheels. I would be taking the wheels and tires back home with me because I planned to sell them separately. I talked to one of the guys briefly about the job and got a good vibe - seemed like an old-school, trustworthy type of place. Imagine my surprise when they finished 20 minutes later and I was presented with a bill for $56. For taking 4 tires off their rims. This is a job that costs $20 at any other small garage. If this was Arlington, I'd expect this type of price gouging. But this is pretty much Merrifield, not exactly an upscale yuppie haven. The manager's response when I complained: "That's our price." I could see any further discussion would be a waste of breath, so I'm chalking this one up to experience. This place might very well do good work, but I highly recommend getting a price quote before letting them start. read more

Had motor mount replacements done about 4 months ago, BUT unlike the guy who wanted his tires dismounted, I got a quote first. Common sense tells ya that's whatcha gotta do. No? You want work done? Any repair shop worth its salt will give you one without anything less than a smile. Those that don't shouldn't get your mney. I have been using Don's Sunoco off and on since the 80's and, as a woman, I've never felt ripped off, condescended to, or lied to. You ask me, that's sayin' a LOT. Most of the other shops I've visited -- and that includes ALL of the "big name" shops like Firestone (I could tell you some hair-raising stories about them) and Goodyear look at a female customer as a lollipop all wrapped and ready to be ripped off. Not too many chairs in Don's (might be 2, I think). But the work is reliable, the prices are reasonable, and the customer service is good. read more

We have been coming here for years. They do thorough safety inspections which is what I want. I would not come here if i wanted a sticker on a car that should not really pass, but I like to know when something really needs work. We usually do the work ourselves, but we have had them replace a transmission and a radiator and always been pleased with the service. They have been in the business a long time and have been trust-worthy. They will also plug a hole in a punctured tire which has been helpful. Some places will not, but we have never had a problem with one of their plugs. read more

A friend of mine recommended Don's after I was quoted what seemed like a very high price at another shop. He's been taking his car here for many years. Don's did the work for about $500 less than I'd been quoted by the other shop, though it did take them two full days to do the work (the other place would have done it the same day). i've come here a few times after a referral from my (now) wife's father, who has used them for the servicing of his cars for the better part of 2 decades. i like to do work myself as much as i can, but sometimes i either don't have the time or don't have the tools; i trust this place. I've always been given a quote when i request one (which you should no matter how small the job), always been given a detailed explaination of what was done, and have been contacted when they've either encountered an issue or if the parts were more than the quote PRIOR to the work being performed. I've been to other shops and dealers for work before and they seem to be the some of the most trust worthy people. their prices are reasonable and their work (i've double checked them when i get home) is good. i've also gotten the car back when i expected it or, even a couple times, sooner. read more

I've been coming to these guys for honest work over the past 30 years and that's exactly what they've given me. I really like being able to take my car in for repairs without getting a snow job because I'm female. I just got a head gasket replaced on my car for less than their estimate. Car ran great, but there was a little noise I figured I ought to call them about. Turns out that when I got home from running my errands, they'd already called ME twice! I took my car in and they dealt with the problem free of charge. You don't find integrity like that much of anywhere these days. These guys are awesome! read more

I have a 1991 Honda Accord I've owned since 2007 but haven't had A/C in this oppressive DMV subtropical & humid climate for 5 years after another mechanic I trusted for years had me change out key A/C components (Compressor, Receiver/Dryer & Expansion Valve) and the A/C still wasn't getting cold or working adequately and also found out he did not convert (retrofit) the old system for R-134 Freon. Went to several other mechanics and even local Honda dealer COULD-or-WOULD NOT (most likely the latter) FIND OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS and kept insisting it was an older car in their attempts to shame me into buying a new car. All of a sudden while getting gas one day at Don's Sunoco, I happened to ask one of the rep's about a repair for another vehicle I own and his response was like "hearing Moses talk to me from the mountain" and from that point I knew I had to take a gamble at Don's Sunoco with my A/C issue. Don's Sunoco initially discovered I needed a Condenser as it was leaking. Got the car back but the A/C still wasn't cold enough or working adequately to cool me off w/temp of 60 degrees on a hot 100 + day figuring in the dewpoint. Took it back and Donnie who politely indicated he would look at it again but told me it would be awhile as some of the guys were out on vacation as he was back-logged which I appreciated his sincerity and honesty. Donnie told me that based on their troubleshooting methods that it had to be the expansion valve. Finally, after being unable to drive the car on long trips in the summer for 5 years, I drove the car a week ago on a 9 hour (one way) trip and it held at 40 degrees there and back. As a matter of fact, it got so cold on two occasions I had to shut it off (hahaha). Thanks to Donnie and his team who were professional and patient with me who resorted to old-fashioned American troubleshooting methods that restored my summer driving with cold air conditioning that overall made me a happy customer. read more
