When I think of local donut shops, this is the kind of place I envision. The storefront isn't huge, but large enough to accommodate the massive group of seniors enjoying a morning chit chat. This is the donut shop where the whole town goes to visit-quite the crowd even at 9:30 am on a Thursday. We ordered six donuts: buttermilk bar, cherry fritter, old fashioned glazed, cake with sugar, cinnamon crumb with filling, cinnamon crumb. The buttermilk bar was super moist and you could that tanginess from the buttermilk. The cherry fritter was to die for! We're not big cherry people, but there's just enough cherry flavor going throughout and it wasn't overpowering--it melted in our mouth. The other donuts were good and very moist. We had always driven by and it was packed, so my husband and I stopped in. We immediately noticed the maple bacon bars and got one for our son along with a dozen donuts. As we were being waited on my husband and I were discussing our predicament of our 17 year old boy who has autism wanting a bacon birthday cake and how we had found nothing so far that day. We just moved to Vancouver and were in search of the best local doughnuts. We passed the Donut Nook and decided to stop in. It has a very dated 70s vibe (which isn't necessarily a bad thing). There is a wall behind the counter for the regulars to bring in and hang their own coffee mugs and armchairs so they can stay a while. Don't expect any frills... but DO expect amazing doughnuts for a small price. We've since been back and declare them to be the best in Vancouver. Hands down. If you want a genuinely good doughnut or fritter, this place is worth your time. Do note that the parking lot is tiny and often hard to get out of, but you can easily parallel park on the street. read more

The place is a little bit like the Twilight Zone... You walk in the door and look around and it's full of retired regulars chewing the fat and eating donuts. It's like one of those movies where you walk into the pub in Transylvania and all of the customers stop and stare at you. You immediately get the feeling that this place is a local community focal point. Then you get to the donuts... none of those air filled, grease blobs served elsewhere, good solid, honest, old-fashioned donuts! You can tell why the regulars virtually live there, it's a friendly, down-home establishment with roots that go all the way to the center of the neighborhood. I was excited to give this place a shot but was quite disappointed when I arrived. It was like walking into some family members out dated home who was a long time smoker and a coat of grime all over. I'm a big fan of private-owned, small business establishments, and I give a lot of leeway for the fact that they don't have the resources of big corporate concerns. That being said...My doughnut was stale. :( Went there on a Saturday morning around 11, looking for a Boston Creme doughnut. They didn't have one, but the lady said "no problem, I can just put creme in this one here" which I though was just awesome. But then I got home, and took a bite and...stale. On a Saturday morning. So sad. I'll give it another try because maybe I just got super unlucky and dammit, I WANT to love this place. Other than that, their selection isn't huge, but totally adequate (and I got there late, I will admit), and they have coffee but no frappa-crappa-lappa setup, so don't expect crazy concoctions. Came here for the first time looking for tasty donuts in Vancouver after a doctor's appointment, and have been coming back whenever a craving strikes. All the donuts I've tried (apple fritter, banana fritter, cinnamon twist, buttermilk bar, glazed donut) have been delicious: fresh and pillowy. I do agree with others that the flavor of a particular donut can be too subtle, but I don't mind it. The decor reminded me of Luke's from Gilmore Girls. The clerks are a bit abrupt but have never been rude to me. The clientele is almost exclusively white every time I've gone, and I had a feeling that I wasn't quite welcome to stay when I visited with my husband and we were speaking Spanish among ourselves. Donut Nook is a hidden gem in the St. Johns area of Vancouver. The location is very small, but very clean and nice people work here. They had a good variety of donuts to choose from. Various cake and glazed, multiple fritters, although the banana type I originally sought from the Yelp review is FRI/SAT (Maybe SUN) only. Oh damn, I guess I'll have to come back. LOL They also had a maple bar with bacon bits on top. It seemed to be a specialty. I passed on it this time, but will likely try it next time. It looked very good. I ended up with a white cake that had a kind of crumble on top, and a ***SUPER DELICIOUS*** cinnamon layered glazed affair that was just awesome. Best unknown donut place in the PDX area. Though I should write two reviews, one for the donuts, and another for the ambiance. The donuts get a 5+, the decor is straight from the 70's, in fact, I think that was the last time it was updated. But that just makes Donut Nook the Donut Nook. Being a fritter fan, I declare their apple fritters the best I have ever had. One time I had the fortune of walking in when some had just come out of the oven. When they say it's time to meet your maker, they're usually talking about God. Well, today I met my maker (NOT the makers mark, as my stupid grandson always drinks). I had arrived at El santo suelo (Spanish for Doughnut Nook - the hometown spanish doughnut shop up in hodunk Vancouver) I truly believe I met the doughnut God. This doughnut dog had bearclaws the size of frying pans. I was hellbent on trying this tasty little treat with my grandson so the first (and last) thing I did here was purchase this doughnut that was so big it required two hands. I called it the "buñuelo dos manos" or "doughnut that requires two hands to eat it is so big". My grandson chris thought it was too sweet and said it upset it stomach. But he has the diabetes and probably was too high on his sugar buzz to think of the nuts. I, grandma, however, thought, that was they lost in QUALITY from this huge doughnut was very little from what they gained in size. Also, talk about a time machine back into my youth. They sell you their coffee (which there brew RIGHT there the shop behind the counter) and they let you drink it out of a personalized mug that looks like it could tell the stories of the mouths its been in. My vision isn't great, but I was able to see the beautiful artwork on the walls of flowing rivers and pictures of flowers or bushes. As if that wasn't enough, they had three, well worn couches available to sit on... the stories the couch could sing of the butts that have been on that bad boy the last 30 years. OK one last thing. I didnt try any but I was able to see them - regular apple fritter, apple apple fritter, blueberry apple fritter, cherry apple fritter. I moved to Vancouver 15 years ago and this donut place has always been the go-to place for doughnuts. I agree the décor seemed to have never change and they do have their solid regulars who you can tell has been there during their younger years. Service is always ever-so-friendly! Admittedly I'm not a big donut connoisseur, I might eat donuts 3 or 4 times per year. I grabbed a dozen to bring to a work party, I picked out about 4 then asked the guy behind the counter to give me an assortment for the rest. The ones he chose seemed like the ones they were just trying to get rid of, the ones nobody would order... I won't do that again. The entire ambience and experience felt like going to my grandpa's old house, everything was old and needed replacement. Everything looked and felt dirty. The mom-and-pop behind the counter didn't look happy to be doing this job. The donuts were pretty good. A lot of people compare them to Voodoo, I'd say they were around the same quality. Voodoo has too much hype and gimmick associated... and their cereal bars always seem stale to me. They had a few purchasing options... $0.95 per donut or some are $1.50 each, or you can buy day-old ones for cheap, or frozen ones as well. Maybe a couple other options... pretty confusing, I just went with fresh to guarantee the best quality available. They charge an extra $0.50 for credit card transactions. Seriously? How is that legal?!? Pet peeve: they ask for tips on their credit card receipts, while no services deserving tips are rendered. I don't think I'll return. read more

Every time I go in here, I get treated so poorly by the staff. Whether I am by myself or with a group, it is always the same. I used to get so perplexed by it because I watched other customers come in, and they were always treated with respect. I finally realized I was by far the youngest customer in the place. A group of older gentlemen would always be sitting together reading the newspaper, and a few older women would come in and out with young children. No one my age ever walked in. I think they assumed I was a delinquent and up to no good. That's fine--i'll take my "No good" self to a different doughnut shop. read more
