My 16 year old baby, Allie was severely ill and showed me on October 5th that she was ready (or so I thought...). She collapse and struggle to get up and with her stress level already through the roof, I believed the best decision was to have an at-home service so that Allie had a comfortable and familiar place and make Allie's pass over as peaceful as possible. I contacted DoorStep Vet because I noticed they had great reviews and I assumed they would be trustworthy, but now I'm questioning their integrity. We set her appointment for the following day, the 6th of October. I was told to give Allie melatonin to sedate her before the vets arrival. When they arrived Allie appeared to warm up quickly to them, but as soon as they injected her with the sedative, Allie immediately popped up and ran across the room with the syringe bouncing in her backside and her hissing at the vets like I've never seen before. One mentioned that she thought she diluted it well enough to prevent a stinging sensation (which I was unaware that was a thing).... This not only happened once, but twice.... I was informed that after giving the sedative that it causes damage to the body and pretty much there's no turning back.... So I felt I had to coax her into the remainder of the process, reiterating that everything will be ok and that I will see her again. Allie's experience was traumatizing! With the many pets I've had in my life and the time I've spent working in a humane society I have never seen any animal react this way. I've contacted them and I felt that my feelings were minimized and was told that Allie's case is rare and that they omit this information to mitigate the stress of the parents of their furry babies. We were able to have a quiet morning with our cat; no trauma of putting her into a crate and bringing her to our regular vet (though they were loving and great, our cat's anxiety was always triggered when we went in). When Dr. Pelaez arrived, we felt strangely at ease and so did our cat who can be skittish around new people. Dr. Pelaez explained the process, and let us know we could take things at our own speed. Our three year old was home and she was very patient while we all said goodbye and got our son settled in his playroom so that just my husband and I could both be there for the actual end. She made sure Neko (our cat) was comfortable and even brought her treats. I was able to hold Neko in my lap, petting her while she went to sleep, pain free. We were told we could take as much time as we needed (with every single step) and able to escort her to the car and say our final goodbyes. I have had to go through this process, losing a pet via euthanasia, before and cannot believe I did not know about this route. Not only was our cat less anxious being at home, but we were too. I was very upset about the thought of losing my cat and cried many times in the days leading up to the appointment. There are several at-home euthanasia options in our area. We chose Doorstep Vet months before it was time to schedule our appointment because of the very helpful information that was on the website. We encourage you to read through it if you have time and are doing research like I was. This includes reading over their services, as well as the "Resources" section. Unfortunately, our big girl Livia's time came close to Christmas! We had really wanted to get one more quality-of-life appointment in with my vet, but we had to wait a little over a week because of the holidays and COVID. My wife contacted Doorstep Vet via their online form on Saturday, December 26, at 8 PM. I received an email response from Lindsay the next morning at 6:45 AM, offering an appointment for December 29. Lindsay was so kind and understanding through the several emails she sent as we had updates and questions. I really appreciate that! On the 29th, we had a rough, slow morning, with Livia barely feeling like getting out of bed. We just sat with her there, and then she eventually walked out from the back door just enough to go potty. We fed her half of her normal meal in her usual food puzzle so she could take her meds, and also keep with her routine. My wife had a bag of small, yummy treats ready for Livia, as the website suggested. Dr. Pool also brought some treats with her. When she walked in, Livia got a final burst of energy. It was so awesome to see Livia walk over to the doctor with such enthusiasm! She had been walking so slowly that morning--and that walking was just from bed to yard, then from yard to bed. I had been bringing her water to drink in her bed. Dr. Pool said she brings treats because it really helps if you can offer your dog a pile of treats to munch on while she is doing the first injection. I really recommend having a bag of small treats you know your pet loves, and it can help if your dog didn't just have a very big meal. If they're feeling stuffed, they may not be as interested in the treats, making it hard to distract them from the doctor with the needle. COVID made this process a little different, but Dr. Pool still managed to be so comforting. She explained everything very well, and we understood what was going on at each step. We both sincerely appreciate the doctors still coming over to pets' homes to help them rest peacefully. We have previously had to decide on euthanasia while at an ER vet, and the at-home option was just so much nicer. It is so comforting that your pet can just lie down in the bed she's been using on a daily basis during this process. It was still hard on us humans emotionally, but not having to do this in a clinic was immensely helpful. We have adopted another big senior, so it won't be very long before we are contacting Doorstep Vet again. Emergency situations may prevent you from scheduling at-home euthanasia. Please don't feel too bad if that happens! Some things we cannot predict, and sometimes we cannot see that our pet has advanced disease internally. Making the decision was what was difficult. When I contacted Doorstep Vet they were very thorough in making sure of the day and time. My baby was not urgent as she was elderly and loosing ability to get around. The appointment was confirmed by phone and email. I received a call as I had asked with ETA on the day of which helped us for final preparations. Our dog was very accepting of the "stranger" coming in - so she felt very comfortable. The process was fully explained to my wife and I and she waited for our direction to continue with each step. I had the option to carry her out in the bed which I did... every step was helpful in handling the grief we experienced, even allowing us to pray before starting the procedure.
