If you want to walk around with hair that makes you want to burst out into tears every time you pass a reflective surface, come to Dosha. If you want to be told every possible way that it *might* actually be your fault that your hair now looks terrible and not the fault of the stylist, come to Dosha. TL;DR: Worst hair experience I've had in my life. This salon as a brand (not just this location) takes no responsibility for hair gone wrong even when it is clearly their fault. I have been to several other stylists now seeking a fix and have been told time or a pixie cut are my only options. ----------------- I am a type A personality who is a stickler for rules. I went in for a perm and a cut. I paid for a full hair cut in addition to the perm but the most the stylist did was take a quarter inch off the ends to get rid of any unhealthy dead ends. I had asked for the cut because I figured my current one would not work for curly permed hair but I trusted my stylist and didn't think twice about that. After the treatment I left and followed the instructions to a T, didn't even risk the loose sock bun for the last day of dirty hair (even though I was told it was probably fine-- I wanted those curls and didn't want to risk it!). 72 hours later I went to wash my hair and the hair was soooo curly in the shower I was ecstatic. I hopped out, got it mostly dry via tshirt scrunch, applied the curl prep and curl enhancing product that was recommended to me by the stylist and went to work. What I saw in the mirror at work: bottom layers that looked more like crimped hair than curled or wavy, almost completely straight top layers with the exception of a crimp at the roots, frizz that caused my hair to stick out pretty much sideways. This was the first time I had noticed that my hair line was somewhat different. Upon inspection I found razor sharp baby hairs (chemically cut is my guess) where my hair line used to be. A collective quarter inch of my hairline was missing. I went back and was given every possible reason things could not have turned out right (none of them applicable) and of course they were all what I could have done wrong instead of admitting maybe something went wrong with the treatment itself. I was told red hair isn't suited for perms-- something I should have been told in the consultation. I was told wearing my hair back like I had it then ruins the curl-- I pulled it back so I wouldn't be walking around with horrible hair. I was told my hair was too heavy to hold a perm-- something that should have been mentioned in my consultation. They gave it a cut to see if that helped. It did not. Instead I now have uneven and irregular layers that do not work with my face shape in addition to the horror described above. I attempted to reach the guest relations department (they do not deal with customer complaints in the store) several times over several days before I finally had to raise a stink and was spoken to by someone other than the receptionist or a voice mail box. In the end I was simply told the salon was 'not a good fit' for me. What a slap in the face to have my hair ruined and told to not come back again since I had the guts to complain about my service and how I had been treated. read more

For leg wax, ask for Terri Lynn. She is professional, personable, warm, and so nice to chat with. That being said, she knows when to just let you relax and have some quiet time. She has been waxing me forever, through pregnancies, through injuries, etc. and her techniques are great and not as painful as some waxings I've had. She rocks!!!!! I gave the stylist M. Stoner two opportunities to cut my hair in a new style. Both times she completely butchered a simple long bob haircut. This last time one of her associates did their best to correct the cut. However, this is by far the poorest haircut I have ever received. I do not recommend this location. After searching for a hairstylist after moving to Portland, I happened upon Dosha. My first cut was amazing and I received a lot of compliments. Each subsequent cut was less and less amazing (same stylist and same cut). One time I showed up for my appointment and after we got started she told me that her prices had increased. I think there might be a more professional way to handle this (calling me ahead of time, having the receptionist tell me when I arrived, etc.) instead of waiting until I was in the chair. I tend to book haircuts during times of desperation, when I just absolutely can not stand to have my hair so long for one more day. So I was thrilled to be able to fit in a last-minute same day appointment for a haircut, and i was BEYOND thrilled with the results! I tend to be fairly specific with what I want and I have been pretty disappointed in the past when hair stylists have tried to push their own agenda on me (e.g., way too many waves or excessive styling, etc...) but Dev was patient and took the time to listen to what I wanted. I felt so comfortable in her chair that after she had cut to the length I desired, I went ahead and told her to take off more length than I usually do, not because she pushed for it but because I really trusted her to do a great job. What this Salon has going for it is that both the woman at the front desk and Melissa who was my stylist are both nice people. It is for this reason only that I feel bad giving a poor review but my experience aside from their kindness was dreadful and perhaps I can save someone else a lot of wasted time and money. I was sent to this location after having a dreadful experience with both cut and color with Cable at the Hawthorne location. It took over a week for the Manager at the Corprate office to call me back to approve this redo with another person and location as I did not wish to have cable touch my hair again. Melissa is very nice and you can tell cares a lot. At the same time there are some huge issues- one being that there is something off about the hair color or application she uses as it did not fully cover my hair, grays were apparent right after and it faded as soon as I washed it once. I came in with photos of a beautiful ombre and ended up the first time with bright orange hair on the bottom which I did not realize fully until I went home as this salon has very poor old lighting. Crazy situation for a hair salon! I returned a day later for this hair color to be fixed and it is now a yucky brown, with still grays appearing on the top through the color and worse then when I started all of this mess. It took up about 6-7 hours of my time and a lot of money. Its frustrating to say the least to still have hair I wish to hide in a bun or a hat. Overall I would advise anyone to stay away from Dosha locations in Portland. I hope this saves someone else and helps to change this system as it needs a total overhaul. I just had my hair dyed and bangs trimmed there yesterday, my hair stylist did a fantastic job with the color (she corrected a tri-color mess that was my hair color) but couldn't have screwed my simple bang trim anymore than she did. I told her a simple angled trim (just a shorter version of what they were), she proceeded to choppily cut my left side of my bangs straight and then left the right side. I was shocked at what a horrible job she did, almost as if she had never cut hair before. I am now stuck with such an ugly bang, I'm almost ashamed to go out because I have no way of hiding it and if I cut it any shorter, it'll be a buzz cut. So I'm giving 2 stars, because coloring hair isn't hard but then again neither is a simple bang trim. read more

I was going to a photo shoot and needed to get my hair and make-up done. I booked Kayla based on all the good reviews for her. My appointment was for 9:45am on a Saturday. I arrived 5 mins early. When I met her she seemed very nice. I explained the look I was going for and she said she understood. I had my hair washed, blow dried and curled. The makeup application was good but not wow. Total with tip $123. My only complaint was that some pieces of my hair were not curled and the services seemed rushed. I just think for the prices they charge I want 'wow'. read more

Incredible service. I have never, ever had someone pay this much attention to my hair and the job they were doing in NYC. I had to "fix" a mediocre highlight job I had gotten at an upscale Aveda salon in NY. The front strands were just bleached out which I never wanted. My stylist took about 2 hours just to dye my hair. She listened and nailed it! I had never loved my color more. I think she had to create 3 different colors in my hair to tone down the bleachy part, create a warm color and highlight. She made a natural caramel good enough for Jennifer Aniston. Im sad I cant just go to Portland each time I need to re-do my hair. She (I think Kira) even hand wrote out a complicated recipe for my hair that I could give stylists here in NY later. Wow. read more

Dosha has become like a really expensive Supercuts. When I called the appointment line I found there were no appointments today, so I asked about tomorrow and the sole answer was "none tomorrow". No alternative dates offered. I could have kept asking about each day until I lucked upon an open slot but I was at work and didn't have time to play the appointment guessing game. It makes no difference how renovated and zen like the building is if the staff is indifferent and unhelpful. read more

I had booked a appointment last year reading the reviews & having the confidence to get my hair done at a professional salon *hence I let nobody touch my hair* I went in for my appointment and had asked for a ombré hair style that was blonde towards the end (easy right?) The lady that was working on my hair was about my age & for some reason it didn't look like she knew what she was doing.. she started processing the bleach in my hair and anyway to make this story short my hair ended up looking orange and brassy! so I called the next day and said I didn't like my hair, it was orange, and I didn't just pay for them to mess up my hair so I went for another appointment and the lady that previously was working on my hair and done a terrible job was "helping" me fix it which pissed me off even more anyway she added a darker color towards the ends of my hair where it was orange *hence I told her I wanted it blonde previously* and by the end of the day it still looked brassy as hell .. it's been a couple months but I still wanted to review this salon because it was the worst experience ever (& I hate leaving bad reviews but you know I just got the yelp app) read more

Dosha in general has horrible reviews. At least what I had found. So, using a gift certificate for a massage, I was a little hesitant in going. I was not let down at all!! The massage was excellent and using the steam room at the end of it just made me more relaxed. I have visited the 5th Ave location many, many times since. Most recently, I tried the hot stone massage and let me tell ya....it was the most amazing experience in massage that I have had. I'm actually going back again within the week for another hot stone massage. The only complain I have, is that I was in the 'hydro' room for a massage once and when I was turning...the therapists hand hit the spout above my head and I got cold water all over my face but, all in all....it hasn't kept me away! read more

I came to Dosha in a state of utter despair after a balayage attempt gone wrong at another salon (which will remain nameless). I booked a correction consult (and subsequent appointment for a partial foil) with Kalli after reviewing her positive comments on Yelp. Kalli was so awesome - she helped calm my nerves and talk me off the metaphorical ledge. I left with hair that is significantly more me and could not be happier. Keasha is amazing! I was absolutely desperate for a haircut on New Year's Eve, and she worked me in last minute. She took my absolute mess of overgrown, damaged hair with TERRIBLE old color fading out, and gave me the best haircut of my life! She gave me exactly what I asked for, was friendly and fun to chat with, and I loved the cut so much that I came back the next day for her to do my color. I was a guest at the hotel and popped in for a haircut. I had Justine and I thought she was fantastic. I have curly hair (which always means a bad haircut). Justine was so great -- it was obvious that she was comfortable with curly hair. I paid 1/4 what I pay in LA and I thought the haircut was twice as good! Awesome 1-hr body massage by Sarah. She was friendly, but not over the top, and she asked about any "target" areas that she should be focusing on. No pushy sales of products, although I voluntarily purchased their Blue Oil (because it is awesome to put couple of drops of this on a hot/steaming towel and place it on my sore shoulders after a bath or during a bath). The overall atmosphere is that of a small boutique day spa nothing fancy but at the same time, when you first walk in, probably not that most tranquil of environment since it is connected to Hotel Monaco (which makes it convenient for hotel guests, that's how I became a fan of this location) But, once you step behind the "quiet area" where the spa area is actually located behind the retail area, it is serene, dark, lighted with candles. You have access to water/tea (albeit, minimal amount served in disposable cups), nuts/dried fruit plate, and access to their phenomenal steam room (which you can use before/after massage) I would say the price range is what you would expect from a day spa using specialized line of products (Aveda in this case) and in the downtown location but nothing outrageous. Plus, if you register to be their VIP member (no cost to join, just give up your spam email address), they will send you special offers for discounts. I used one of these offers I received last weekend to go visit for the 2nd time, and I would have to say that the service was consistent from the last visit. I didn't give 5 stars because of the non-chalant attitude of the front desk personnel. She was in just a mad hurry to close-out for the day since I was the last guest but I even inquired about purchasing a series of treatments for a new product they are launching (hello? that's worth at least couple hundred dollars?) but she couldn't be bothered. Just wanted me to pay and get the hell out of there. Overall, I would recommend picking a day during the week (since hotel guests take over the appointments during the weekend) when it is some what slow here, although they do have other Aveda-related Dosha spas around various locations in Portland. I just prefer this location due to its proximity from my house/work. Plus, I just met my favorite massage therapist here. read more

The great: i got a massage by Brett and it was amaze-o. If you like deep tissue and need some serious knots worked out, he's your guy. Also great ambiance for the massage, and a steam room to boot. The meh: I got a haircut by Keira. I like her a lot personally. But damn. I just washed out all the product, and ran my fingers thru my hair: totally lopsided in the back by about an inch. I.e., the the hair on the right side of the back of my head comes out a full inch further than the left side. WORSE: the side with less hair is the side with scars where i NEED more hair (and before this cut, HAD more hair--because of a lopsided cut from the last hairdresser, which left the left side longer). I also just had to trim a few stray pieces by myself that showed up post-wash. for supercuts, you might have the same experience, but at least it won't be $100. Sigh. read more

My haircut done here was good, I left feeling like a diva but the next day I went to style it and realized that in the back it was actually a bit longer than I had asked for. I know it was my fault and I should have paid attention but it was styled so well that it made it look shorter. It was a pretty pricey haircut that I had saved for and I can't go back and fix it yet :/ The woman who did my hair was extremely nice (as most are). I can't remember her name, I got my haircut back in June. Leaving was a bit awkward, there were workers standing at the desk gossiping and then I heard "when can I schedule for a bang trim?" And got told I was making a mistake by not scheduling one. Well...my bangs were also cut way too short so I didn't need them doing them again. read more

Worst salon experience ever. Extremely unprofessional. Do NOT let Tabitha touch your hair. She cut one side and left the other side longer, when I asked her to please make the other side match she refused and said "I know what I am doing". I said I disagreed and asked for a Senior Stylist. She said there wasn't one and she tore the vinyl cape from around my neck and exited into the back room leaving me sitting there. The manager came over and apologized. I called the customer service number and explained what happened and was refunded my money. Obvious Tabitha hates her job and hates people. Just had my hair cut from Kira and i love it! Best haircut i've ever had hands down. I was immediately offered something to drink upon arriving. She began the haircut with a hand and arm massage, then moved onto a scalp massage when washing my hair (Really makes a man feel pampered). Kira is super friendly and attentive.
