Peppers has a great location, although a little difficult to locate since there are signs that lead you to Double Eagle as well as Peppers. Turns out they share the same space. Or maybe they are the same restaurant with 2 menus. I don't know. But I was looking for Peppers and that's where I went. Even though I was also in the Double Eagle. So at Peppers I ordered peppers. Peppers filled with seafood and cheese and covered in a green chili sauce (which is technically a type of pepper as well). The seafood filling was cheesy, a bit spicy and peppered plentifully with chopped bits of shrimp and scallops. As you can see I had quite the Peppery dinner with my pepper sauce covered stuffed peppers at Peppers. The actual entree was seafood green chili rellenos but that doesn't sound as redundant does it? I was in Las Cruces with the girlfriend and she recommended that we hit up Double Eagle. She raved about the buffet saying that i was out of this world and worth the $28. I'm always game to go places based on recommendations, so we went. Suffice it to say I was sorely disappointed. I was expecting something on the order of Vegas (for $28) and what I got was something on the order of nursing home home food. Most everything I stuck in my mouth that day was underwhelming. There is a decent omelette bar (made to order). Everything else is in heated trays (bacon, sausage, pancakes), etc. It was just completely unmemorable. I might not complain if the price were $13.95, but for $28, it's outrageously overpriced IMO. The mimosas that they serve are unlimited, but the brand of sparkling wine used is a lower grade, probably about $6-8 in the store. Headache from cheap bubbly? No thanks. Coffee was good. My favorite part of buffets? The people watching. Watching folks go back for plate after plate of mediocre food gives credence to the Gallup polls showing 31% of Americans are obese and 46% are overweight. Pretty sad show. The interior of Double Eagle is .......well depends on your style. It's different, that's for sure. It's old school and definitely has some style. The service I thought was excellent. Our waitress was super attentive and cleared our plates quickly so that we could return to the trough for another serving. Coffee was good and my cup never went empty. Double Eagle easily wins the prize for classiest restaurant in the whole Las Cruces/Mesilla area. While touring the Mesilla Square my friend took me inside Double Eagle to show me some of the rooms that are said to be haunted. I liked the look of the place so much I decided to make reservations later that night for my birthday dinner. We showed up again later that night around 7pm (after finally finding what seemed like the LAST parking spot in the whole town) and the place was pretty busy. Thankfully, we had our reservation so we were immediately led to our table. The dining area is pretty classy with gigantic oil paintings on the walls, elaborate chandeliers, and mirrors. It looks like a room straight out of the Queen's castle. The menu has lots of appetizers, salads, steaks, chicken, fish, and also a large dessert section. I'm not a huge steak eater so I stuck to the fish section. To start I had the Double Eagle house salad (mesclun greens, tomato, cucumbers, black olives, garlic croutons, and raspberry vinaigrette) followed by the Rocky Mountain trout (sauteed with butter, lemon, garlic, capers, and white wine). The salad was surprisingly good with the perfect amount of their delicious house raspberry vinaigrette. The trout came sliced in half, laid open, with the tail still intact. The fins were on the plate sticking out of small piles of mashed potatoes. The head was also on the plate but had carrot sticks coming out of the eyes and parsley sticking out of the mouth. It was amazing and I couldn't help but laugh when I saw it. The meat was flaky and cooked nicely and with the exception of a rib bone here and there it was great! We were both so full (especially from the multiple light-as-air croissant muffins) we decided to skip desert. However, next time I come back I'm looking forward to trying the coconut flan pie! If you're looking for a classy restaurant and a break from the tourist infested restaurants populating the Mesilla Square, Double Eagle is your best bet. We just ate at the Double Eagle (not Peppers) last night, and it was everything we expected in a fine dining experience. We have traveled the world many times and eaten in the best restaurants in both the US and Europe, and by comparison Double Eagle is definitely in the same class. We all had aged steaks and I could have cut mine with my fork --- and it was the "baseball cut" sirloin! My husband ordered the NY Strip and was also very pleased. Aged steaks served with a perfectly balanced red wine reduction, classic and just what we expected. Our servers were also very knowledgeable about the wines, very friendly, courteous, and helpful. Their selection of "by the glass" choices is superb, I had the Pinot Noir and husband had the Cab. We will definitely be returning to Double Eagle, as we are new to Las Cruces and just scoping out some good places to go. If you are looking for great food, aged steaks, and wonderful service, we definitely recommend Double Eagle. And if you're more of a "Lone Star" or "Texas Roadhouse" kind of steak diner, you will still be blown away by the historically elegant decor. I strongly encourage those in El Paso to make the 45 minute drive to The Plaza in Historic Old Mesilla, New Mexico to try this place out. My girlfriend recommended it as a last minute option for dinner and I was totally pleased. We were dressed very casual but it was ok. It is also a place that you can dress nice as well. This place is a historical must-see location. It is absolutely beautiful to dine and having a drink here. Supposedly, there is a history of a killing and ghosts and the entire places looks and smells in some places as if time stopped. I did not go there for the food but had their Award-winning margaritas. They are strong, great and priced fairly well for its quality. The ambiance itself is worthwhile. The reason I am giving it only 4 stars, is the lack of attentive customer service. We have been seated in a very comfortable area but it was somewhat secluded and hence the service did not stop by as often as we would have liked it. I also received a glass that had lipstick on it. But I mean like a lot of lipstick not just a tiny spot. The waitress brought me immediately a new glass (in my opinion) with a less stronger margarita than the lipstick glass had. read more

I had a really great experience here. I came with a party of 10 adults and 4 kids the total cost came out to $150 and everyone loved their food. Our food was ready fast (granted we were pretty much the only ones there), the scenery was great, and for the price we paid I can't complain about anything. The place seemed to come off as more of a fine dinning type of restaurant but had amateur servers. The two guys who waited on us divided the table in half and only refilled half the tables drinks at different times. They had good intentions just not properly trained. We happened upon Old Mesilla square completely on accident as we exited the interstate looking for lunch and wanted to avoid another stop at the Golden Arches. What luck! The Double Eagle is a slice of history and the food is good too! The menus say they are on the National Register of Historic Places and it's not hard to believe from the Imperial Bar to The Ghost Room - The Carolotta Salon the paintings and furniture are gorgeous antiques. (And I love a good ghost story!) We ate in The Billy The Kid Patio area which is a a large open atrium with a glass ceiling to let in the light, and features a seven foot carved fountain surrounded by palms. The waitress pointed out the history of the rooms on the menus and encouraged me to look around, which I happily did. There were more than 7 or 8 separate rooms each with their own decor and story, a few were obviously being set up for private parties. My boyfriend was absolutely thrilled to find out Billy the Kid was tried at the courthouse next door and just to add to the ambiance the whole town was getting ready for their Day of the Dead celebration. I had a chicken salad sandwich spruced up with grapes and it was very good and probably more than I wanted to pay, but I think you pay for the whole experience here. They tout an award winning Margarita and nationally recognized wine selection but I'm sorry to say I didn't imbibe. If I was only rating the food, this place would probably only get three stars. We have tried the historic Double Eagle twice now. Both times it was a terrible experience. 1) Christmas Eve, 2022. My daughter and I made our reservation weeks in advance as we heard this was a popular spot over the holidays. The day of, we called to confirm. The person on the phone asked for our credit card number, which we thought odd. "If you are more than 15 minutes late, or no show us, we will charge you a convenience fee." A strange, albeit ridiculous requirement as we would soon find out. We arrived 15 minutes before our reservation time. When we walked it, it was wall-to-wall people in the hostess/bar/lounge area. Our reservation time came and went. We checked with the hostess regularly, and she was clearly overwhelmed and not handling the large volume of people well at all. Finally, one hour past our designated reservation time (remember, they threatened to charge us a fee if we were late....) we were seated. It took another 30 minutes just to get drinks. I actually got up, retrieved a pitcher of water and served us myself. Finally, our drink order was taken. Ten minutes later, the waiter comes back and informs me they're out of the wine I ordered. So I ordered I cocktails instead. Ten minutes later, he returns and informs me they're out of the ingredients for the cocktail. So I ordered a beer, which they actually did have. So, we're an hour in and I finally get my beer. The waiter takes the food order (finally...) and we wait. And wait. And wait. 45 minutes goes by and we finally get out plates of food. Which are lukewarm at best. Frustrated at this point, we just eat rather than send the food back, as that would have no doubtedly delayed us even further. I have never been so ready to pay the check and leave as I was this night. The check comes and while our entrees were correct, they had charged me for the drinks they told me were unavailable! To add insult to injury, they "automatically included an 18% gratuity," which, for a large party I would understand, but for a party of just two? Get out of here. It took another 30 minutes to get the check resolved. I absolutely loathed the experience, and thought hard about posting a review that night, ephasizing the poor management of the place. Even though hey knew exactly how many people had reserved dinner that night, the management clearly did not schedule enjoy cooks or wait staff. 2) May 13, 2023. We have out of town guests who arrive and at their request, make dinner reservations at the Dougle Eagle. My daughter had explained our horrible experience, but the decision was made - they wanted to dine there, so we honored their wishes. This time, instead of a party of two, we have a party of ten. This time though, the Double Eagle did not require a credit card number or threaten to charge us any fees if we are late. So we're off to a good start. I'll give any place a second chance. As is usual for me, we arrive 15 minutes early for our reservation time. There is an empty lounge and hostess station to my relief. No wall-to-wall crowd like during Christmas Eve. We are all led to a nice room that has been set aside for our party. "We have two servers assigned to you, so anything you need, just let them know." Now I'm really feeling good, having heard that. We had seen one other large group and several other parties of two. So, we're feeling confident we won't have a repeat of the first experience. Our two servers take our drink orders, but then inform us there is potential for delay as there is a huge party in their main banquet hall. Indeed there was a significant delay. And there was a repeat of our first experience. Drinks took 30-45 minutes to come out, it took 30 minutes for our food orders to be taken. Then another hour for the food to arrive. We hardly saw our two servers. Finally, one came back and sheepishly asked if we needed anything. We had two very young children with us who were growing tired, hungry and cranky. I asked her if we could at least get the kids' chicken nuggets (how hard could that be??) in order to calm the children down. 10 minutes later the kids finally get their meals - at this point we are two full hours into our stay there, and couldn't believe it. Another 10 minutes pass and here come both servers with trays of our dinner, at last. And, once again, the food was barely lukewarm. I've never had a steak that cold before. Not a single person at the table was satisfied with their meal. All had the same complaints - two hours for overpriced, poorly cooked food. For $60-$80 per plate, it's not unreasonable to expect a top notch experience. Never again, Double Eagle. Never again. You don't get a third chance. read more

In Las Cruces, Double Eagle is the fancy, upscale restaurant one goes to when entertaining VIPs or for special occassions. Built in the late 1840s, it was originally a private residence. The decor is very classic and elegant and the wait staff is awesome! The prices are a little out of my range, so I've yet to have dinner here. However, on Sundays, they have a great buffet brunch! $20/person, but you must, MUST, have reservations. The menu includes many breakfast regulars such as waffles, cheese blintzes, sausage, thick sliced bacon(so good!), and Eggs Benedict (yum!), In addition to that, they have some local lunch dishes such as green chile con carne and green chile and cheese enchiladas. Overall a $500+ dinner tab which we would have been fine with paying EXCEPT THEY CHARGED US A 10% credit card fee!!!!!!!! Ohhh, echanté! Peppers on the Plaza is simply enchanting. Well worth the drive for any El Pasoan and a must when passing through the Las Cruces/Mesilla area. Prior to eating at POTP I wasn't envious of anyone who lived in Las Cruces, but all that has changed now. After spending a few minutes at the newly opened New Mexico Pecan Co., we marched across the street in search of an ATM at Double Eagle. Upon approach I noticed two signs, "Double Eagle" and "Peppers on the Plaza". DE/POTP is one of the few places with a ATM at the plaza so they came through for us on that. During the money grab I got a quick look around and I would definitely describe it as classy. The bar felt 20's inspired to me, but I'm no architect. I love the detail they put into everything, they even went as far as detailing the ceiling with "tiles" (I put tiles in quotations because they appear to be made from a thinner, hollow material like...plastic, but again I'm no architect and it added to the charm). We returned after we paid for our bags of delicious pecans and pistachio brittle. Two hostess greeted us with a very warm smile and asked which restaurant we'd like to be seated at. From what I understand, DE is more about steaks and fine dining inside and POTP is more about New Mexico flare and casual dining on the patio. I was wearing a Deter shirt that said something along the lines of "I just want to LOVE you" and jeans so casual dining it is! Our hostess led us to a wood table in the atrium as I stared in wonder. Enchanting. A fountain sits in the middle that has strings of lights outstretched to each side. The lights wrap around each post with ferns and palm trees strategically placed throughout the atrium. The windows, wood and most of the siding appears to be original...although we had a debate about how original the atrium ceiling was (or the fact that it was an atrium originally at all). At minimum I think the atrium was done prior to it becoming a restaurant. A rather friendly busser came over and let us know our server would be there shortly and filled our glasses with water, letting us know if we needed anything we could also call on him. From that moment on I knew that the experience would be nothing less than exceptional. Our server, Santiago (I believe), arrived only moments later and was about to take our drink orders when Margaritas were mentioned. Apparently they have over 40 different Margaritas. He gave us a few minutes with the drink menu and on return I settled on the Prickly Pear. I still needed some time with the actual menu so he left to place our drink orders and bring us the seasoned chips and salsa. I like the idea of seasoned chips, I'm guessing it was a steak seasoning. My foodie PIC wasn't fond of the thick tomato based salsa, but I didn't mind it and actually kind of liked it (but then again I really, really like tomatoes). Our drinks arrived and the Prickly Pear is now my absolute favorite margarita. I didn't specify frozen or on the rocks so it came out on the rocks, but that didn't take away from the deliciousness at all. My dining PIC felt as though the glass served with his Corona was not chilled, but I will tell you without a doubt that thing had spent some time in a freezer (just not to the degree he would've liked). The menu is very unique. It wasn't just composed of New Mexico faves, but was also sprinkled with a few European dishes. The Beer Braised Beef Carbonnade caught my eye immediately. Thin steak cuts braised in beer, topped with mushrooms, laying on a piece of sourdough bread toasted with Parmesan, all surrounded in a rich stew. Perfection. Pure perfection. The steak was cooked to about medium and perfectly juicy and flavorful. The mushrooms and stew were phenomenal, both dark and delicious. And the sourdough bread...gaaaaaaaawd! This came with a side and from the recommendation of Santiago I chose the battered fries...top notch! And dipping them in the left over stew was amazing! The chile rellenos my PIC ordered appeared to be breaded in tempura which I thought was rather inventive and looked phenom (and I've never thought chile rellenos looked phenomenal). The only reason I'm docking a star is because of dessert. There's two desserts I can never pass on, Tiramisu and Creme Brulee. POTP serves an Espresso Creme Brulee and unfortunately it was rather disappointing. I suspect they do not use a kitchen torch, but the broiler...it could've used a little bit more time in the broiler to evenly caramelize. And I wasn't particularly fond of the custard. The custard didn't have any hint of Espresso and was simply a vanilla custard, but it wasn't fully set. The top half was, but the bottom was liquified. Since it was served cold, I'm assuming water got into the ramekin when the custard was being set. Dessert disaster aside, I am absolutely obsessed with Peppers on the Plaza. Can i give a lower score this place was horrible I ordered the most expensive things on the menu the only thing they got right were the bottled drinks. I ordered table side and the only table side i got was them bringing me the food. Fuck this place And its nice when management tries to fight back and insult you for there horrible service. read more

This was the worst fine dining experience I've had. I have never been discriminated against especially living here in El Paso / Las Cruces area. We had dinner reservations at 7:30 seated at 7:45 and received our dinner at 9:00. They never brought us the complimentary "crackers" or bread the whole time we were waiting. I even asked our server. I had to ask for a clean water glass and he never brought it. The other tables servers were very attentive but to us we received water refills once. The chicken marsala was watery and the chicken was super tough. I had the chicken mesilla and my chicken was super tough both plates had no flavor. My husband ordered a ribeye and lobster tail. His steak was a sirloin and they brought lobster mac and cheese. We sent that back and ended up having to cancel the lobster because they never brought it. Never again...... From the beginning, I made a reservation for 4:45. My friend went in to get our table while I was taking pictures in the Square. When I got inside my friend told me she checked in at the hostess station and the next thing she knew, they were all discussing something about someone not coming in and she was ignored. SO, she went to find a table on her own. NO ONE ever came over to apologize, etc. So, our waitress AMBER comes over and we were asking specifically about the $7 a glass and what wines that price applied to. She checked or out and told us the three wines it didn't apply to. They also no longer have prices for bottles of wine. When we asked, she checked with the bar and they told her the price was four times the glass price! I've never heard of that, but we said ok and ordered by the glass one of the $7 wines. My friend was taking me to dinner to celebrate being cancer FREE. So, we ordered the 8 oz tenderloin to split with the twice baked potato. We specifically asked for them to put the sauce on the side AND for extra butter. NEITHER OF THOSE REQUESTS HAPPENED! The sauce was all over the tenderloin and no butter! I asked for paper napkins to sop off the sauce (why any wait staff would allow that I'm still trying to understand) and FINALLY had to walk back to the kitchen myself to ask for pthe butter! No apology from Amber - nothing! As we were eating, she did come over and say "I see you got your butter". As we were finishing, she came over and said "I've got your check for you". Didn't ask if we wanted desert or another glass of wine! I mentioned to her we would have liked a piece of the cheesecake and another glass of wine but since she was ready for us to leave, we'd go. Overpriced, bland food, with subpar service. Not worth it. It's severely overrated tourist trap.

On a Saturday, there wasn't many customers and the waitress took forever. My sister ordered a salmon and it was completely raw so the waitress had to take it back to the kitchen. I ordered the chicken fajitas. It was 5 small pieces of chicken with the tiniest amount of guacamole (the size of a quarter). The elote en vaso was grose. I am used to having a mexican traditional corn on the cup which is amazingly delish. I will leave 4 stars because their buffet on Sundays is amazing! Only come on Sundays! read more

Pepper's Cafe has a pretty indoor patio, with lots of natural light, greenery, & a fountain. The Double Eagle has beautiful Victorian style rooms throughout, that are very romantic. The food is good but the atmosphere is what made it more memorable. read more

Wonderful historic location on the square in Mesilla, the interior of the restaurant is beautiful, not what you would expect in a small New Mexico town. The waitstaff was very attentive without being intrusive. Even the strolling mariachi band, which I usually detest, was good. Fabulous green chili Pozole and hatch chili relleno.
