Dr. Shirley is one of the best dental doctors I have come across. Also, they take appointments on Saturdays!

What makes a great dentist? Here are my criteria: * Deeply knowledgeable and thorough in her exam and treatment * Clear and articulate; provides information for you to make an informed decision * Carefully assesses patient's situation and makes suggestions that are most beneficial to YOU even if it means less $$ for the dentist * Accessible - can reach by phone; calls are returned * Maintains a clean, hygienic office with friendly and efficient staff * Eases your stress, makes you feel comfortable If my criteria are your criteria, then Dr. Shirley is the dentist for you. Here is a little more detail. When I went for my first routine semi-annual checkup, Dr Shirley took whatever time was required. She personally took the x-rays, cleaned and polished my teeth. This was one of the gentlest and most thorough cleanings I've ever had. After examining the x-rays, she said a root canal would be needed, and provided a referral to an exceptional endodontist, Dr. Jason Kung in Sunnyvale (see my Yelp review). She was enthusiastic in her recommendation. I could tell she would not recommend someone lightly, but had probably thoroughly vetted him. After the root canal, I had some questions about the crown that would be required. Suja, Dr Shirley's lovely associate, passed along my message on a Friday afternoon. I didn't expect a call until the following week. To my surprise, Dr Shirley called me on a Saturday. I was impressed. Since there were some complications with this tooth, we discussed the options at length. Dr Shirley even volunteered a recommendation to a prosthodontist. She was willing to refer the crown procedure to another dentist, if it would be a better option for me. I was impressed. At every step, Dr Shirley provided straightforward, clear explanations of options. She clearly states the benefits and risks for each procedure. I appreciated that she was transparent about her fees, which are quite reasonable. Lastly, I am very phobic about needles. Dr Shirley was willing to do whatever she could to allay those fears. read more

Such a stellar dentist with a charismatic persona! Dr. Shirley was very professional examining and providing with solutions by priority. In other words, she doesn't push for treatments that are unnecessary and I absolutely loved how she gave solutions considering my budget and insurance policy. I really feared getting any kind of tooth care in the US (as all prior dental appointments were in India). I must say, I was just blown-away with how Dr. Shirley handled my wife's dental problem. It saddens me to write this because I had high hopes for this place based on all the positive reviews, but I'm sure my experience as a parent will bring reassurance to another seeking the right dentist for their child. Back in May I brought my son in for a dental evaluation as required for school registration. I selected Doves off my insurance providers list and due to the 5-star Yelp ratings. Dr. Shirley is friendly and has a charismatic persona; however, I do not feel they are well-suited or equipped to service young children. It was our first visit to this location and my 5yr old was scheduled for a routine exam and cleaning. At first, I was slightly taken aback that parents/guardians aren't allowed in the room and are asked to wait in the lobby. It's a fairly small office, so it didn't bother me that I'd be 10ft away from where my son was being treated. Within the first five minutes of waiting, I began to hear strange noises coming from my son's examination room, followed by remarks from Dr. Shirley and her assistant saying, "bite down...close your mouth...do it...keep trying...come on...etc." I brushed it off at first, but as time went on (approx. 20mins since waiting) red flags began to go off as I hear my son gagging and coughing. My Mommy mode kicked into high gear as I rushed into the room to see what was going on. To my dismay, I see both women standing over my child with their hands stuffing an x-ray camera/mouthpiece in his mouth. Apparently, the instrument was too large to fit inside his little mouth that it kept pushing his tongue farther back into his throat. When I realized what was going on, I immediately stopped them and told them to figure out another way to take the x-ray or we were done. The look of fear and helplessness on my baby's face when he turned and saw me at the door will forever be ingrained in my mind. I felt terrible that he had to endure that for 20 mins! It was obvious that the mouthpiece and camera couldn't all fit inside his mouth, and despite the gagging/coughing no one had the common sense to STOP and figure out an alternative approach. Doves Dental claims to be a 'Family dentistry' but their equipment cannot accommodate each family member. Its been less than six months since this incident and my son is still traumatized. Unfortunately, my insurance will only allow pediatric dentistries by referral from the primary family dentist. Even after requesting a referral for my son, Dr. Shirley continues to insist that she's able to provide my child the better service. We have not returned for any follow-up's or scheduled cleaning, and will not recommend them for pediatric dental treatments to anyone. read more

I used to be a dentist back in my country, when I came my English level wasn't well enough to pass my boards to go to dental school. I stared working as an RDA, doing temping in a different offices in the Bay Area. When I met Dr Shirley, we work, like we work forever together, I can tell her passion for her profession with her patients and staff. She's so honest in her diagnostics and conservative. Overall, I've had a really great experience with Dr.Shirley and her team. They're very patient, kind and accommodating as far as service goes. I've had no issues with making an appointment, rescheduling or contacting their offices and feel assured that they'll provide excellent services in the future. I went to see this dentist 2 years ago when i bought a deal online. I didnt have insurance and needed a cleaning. They did a cleaning and x-rays. Cleaning was fine, they were nice. After she finished the work she went on to say I had about 8 cavities, I pretty shocked. My husband apparently also had about 5!!! Sounds ridiculous! Then she gave us a quote to get the work done. We didnt. Fast forward 2 years to now... we went to a new dentist (since now I have insurance) to get a cleaning done. I had not had any work done since Dove dental smiles. This dentist takes x-rays and tells me I have NO CAVITIES! How could the cavities go away on their own??? To me.. it seemed like she was just trying to get some money out of work that did NOT need to get done OR she just didnt really know what she was talking about. I wish I could give 20 stars...or 100 stars. Actually, infinite stars. Just as a disclaimer, I am an incredibly selective and judgmental individual. I am not impressed easily, and I hold services to exceptionally high standards. That being said, I have hit the absolute gold standard in my dentist, Dr. Shirley, at Dove Dental Smiles. Dr. Shirley performs meticulous dental work and considers the patient's comfort (i.e. sunglasses, vaseline on your lips, and neck cushion), but it truly is her genuine demeanor and charisma that keeps me a permanent patient. I can honestly say that I LOVE going to the dentist, all due to the fact that it is Dr. Shirley. She consistently has a huge smile on her face when she greets you, she is good humored, she listens, AND she remembers everything you tell her and will follow up with you on it at the next appointment, be it even 6 months later. For example, I mentioned at one cleaning that I had recently gotten engaged; 6 months later at my subsequent cleaning, she gave me a wedding magazine that was mailed to her home address, not even to the office. She actually thought of me and kept the magazine, so that she could give it to me at the next cleaning months later!!! In fact, Dr. Shirley is so personable and warm, I secretly wish I could be friends with her and have her over for dinner some time. Were I ever to move far away, even out of state, I will likely fly back 2x per year just for my cleanings with Dr. Shirley. Yes, she's THAT good that I've feared this possibility and thought it through (The same goes for my mechanic in Sunnyvale as well, except I can't really ship a car in from out-of-state for oil changes, etc...). read more

I've been taken quite a few time by bad dentists with horrible billing practices... and due to my bad experiences I can definitely day that Dr. Shirley is hands down my most favorite dentist EVER. She is amazingly sweet, and calm, and so attentive each time my daughter or I see her. Her chair-side manner and gentleness are the best I've ever experienced! She provides her patients with a comfy neck pillow, as well as glasses to avoid getting "splashed" during cleaning procedures. She has really taken the time to consider the patients experience while in the chair, and does everything she can to make you comfortable. She does wonderful work, visits with her are near painless. First of all, I loved the kindness and courtesy of both Dr. Shirley and her assistant. The place was clean, which is not always so common among dentist offices. Also the prices were not bad at all. The kinda dentist you want to have! I have been visiting Dr. Shirley for over 2 years now and have had an extremely pleasant experience each time. Just so you know, this comes from someone who has had quite a few teeth problems and one who has visited other dentists before landing up here. Dr. Shirley is very professional, knowledgable and to the point about the treatment needed. Before and during the treatment, she makes sure you're aware of what's exactly being done. Also, she prioritizes very well on what treatment requires sooner attention and is flexible if some treatment could be pushed to a later time in order to accommodate one's schedule. (in case of multiple teeth treatment like mine). My mom too had a great experience when she ran into her for teeth problems. I have recommended Dr. Shirley to a few of my friends, and all of them have had an equally great experience. Although I have moved quite far away from where I previously stayed (which was closer to the clinic), I am quite hesitant to change my dentist just because of the honest opinion and treatment I receive. I strongly recommend her to anyone looking for a dentist around the Cupertino/Sunnyvale/Mountain View area. It is not easy to find a good dentist & clinic, I have Googled around and read many reviews when we moved back to the Bay Area 1 year ago, I full heartily recommend Dr Shirley & Dove Dental Smiles. Dr Shirley is extremely professional and knowledgeable, very caring and friendly, and above all, she pays attention to every details when doing the dental works. I haven't been to a dentist in a really long time, but I saw this great deal on living social and since I don't have dental insurance I decided to snag the deal. So I went in for a check up and cleaning on a Saturday! (awesome that they are open on Saturdays, since I work Mon-Fri.) Dr. Shirley is super sweet and gentle. Her dental assistant/technician was very friendly and courteous. I love the fact that they played music, I guess to help you relax which it did, and Dr. Shirley always asked if I was comfortable, which dentists can care less, but she took the time to make sure I was ok. I ended up finding out I have a few problems which I need to return, which sucks, but I am glad that I am returning to Dr. Shirley, since I have no insurance she is willing to work with you on a price that best fits your budget AND they even offer a credit card type for dental for when charges are too high which they also offer no interest if you pay it off with in 6,8,12 months, depending on your credit history. Having experienced horrific dental care as a child (many, many years ago) I have had a fear almost my entire life with regard to dental car. It wasn't until I met Dr Shirley that my fear/phobia of dentist ended. Recently Dr Shirley helped me with the process of restoring my dental hygiene and bringing back my beautiful smile which I have missed for years. During the process she also performed some implants something I had dreaded/feared not just because of the possible discomfort but also because of the possible expense that would be incurred. Long story short, the cost estimate left me overwhelmed and was considerably well below anything I had been previously quoted AND much more was taken handled by insurance than I expected. In retrospect, all my white knuckle fears that I had previously experienced have been left behind. In fact, each time I sit in Dr Shirley's dental chair, I am completely relaxed and even laughing the entire time. ( No, not because of nitrous :) ) Dr Shirley and her wonderful staff are now more akin to family and I can not begin to say how so very pleased I am and I proudly recommend her and her services to EVERYONE! read more

oh my goodness! Dr. Shirley and her team are wonderful.. I went in as a new patient (insurance change) with a broken front tooth that was beyond saving... meanwhile a crown came off a back tooth taking alot of tooth with it.
