What can I say that has not already been said. It is my first time here I got the BBQ pork sandwich with BBQ beans and potato salad on the side. Both sides were delicious and the pork was so tender. Plenty of screened seating with fans blowing a nice breeze. Employees are very nice and I will definitely be back to try the brisket. read more

This place is inconvenient. Food is good but this place is never open that much. Then don't except credit or debit my have cash or check. Really who carries cash that often. Get up with the times! Also if you talk with the owners about any of this their response is "You don't have to eat here!" or " It's our business we will open when we want!" To me this isn't good customer relations. I live next door to this place and it's rarely open. When the do closes it not just one or two days it's sometimes weeks. I don't recommend this place. read more

Stopped to pick up lunch today. My wife had the wing dinner she had the wings with mild sauce ,slaw and horseradish potato salad. First the wings were meaty good season and taste sauce ,slaw was creamy and not over dressed. The potato salad had a good horseradish flavor without being overwhelming . This was a first time tasting potato salad like that but will not be my last . I had sausage with peppers an onions a good amount of well seasoned and smoked sausage. A very rustic down South BBQ spot where the finest BBQ can be found. What started as a hole in the wall quickly became a huge local favorite! We "occasionally" clue in visitors. as I said a rural spot, with a few picnic tables in an enclosed, screened off area. Most of their business come from the take away group. Along with buying dinners for the entire family, we delight our Dog Show Friends buy frequently buying it by the pound. We Dog Show in a 17 state range, no matter the location people beg to come to our rig BBQ parties. They also serve old fashioned sides. The green and baked beans are total winners and IMHO they make some mighty fine mustard potato salad! The wait times are pretty brief and well worth it. Holy smoke! I'm a Memphis girl and if there's one thing I know well, it's BBQ. We joke that my husband only married me for my grill and I only married him because he's the best pitmaster I've ever known. Finding good BBQ here is about as easy as finding fresh caught seafood in Memphis. This place quickly went to the top of the three really good places we've found. Pulled pork is important. Theirs is great! The smoke flavor is just right, but what makes it even better is that they have an option to order it on hoe cakes instead of buns. That's a first for me. I kind of expected something like an arepa, but it wasn't. You don't even have to ask for slaw on it. They just know BBQ sandwiches are supposed to have slaw and sauce on them. The sandwiches are huge too! The true test though was the ribs. Theirs are perfect - perfectly tender, perfect smoke ring, perfect flavor - perfect! They don't just assume you want sauce on them. That comes on the side for those of us who prefer to just taste the smoke and meat. They didn't use dry rub, which I prefer, but they were still spot on. For my side, I ordered mac and cheese. It was okay. It was definitely homemade. My hubs had baked beans. He said they were good. He and my sister-in-law had the jalapeño hoe cake bbq sandwiches. For dessert, I had some made-from-scratch banana pudding and my SIL had some delicious peach cobbler. The food was very impressive, and it takes a lot to impress me when it comes to BBQ. This is a little place where you park, walk up to a window and order your food and wait on them to call your number. Then you take your food to a little screened-in area with picnic tables and eat. There's no sit-down area with air conditioning, so if you're not used to this heat and humidity, you might want to find a cool place to sit and enjoy your meal. I love the summer heat so it works for me. We had 3 sandwiches, a half slab of spare ribs, 2 sides, 2 desserts, and 3 drinks for about $60. There was so much food we had half of it left over. WOW, hhhmmmm let me say it again, WOW! yep it sounds better the second time. This little shack behind a Shell station, can put out some meat, very tasty meat and I found that I wanted it all. Down South has got it down pat from Brisket to Ribs. Today I got a large beef sandwich, cause small is for punks! I also got my beef sandwich all the way except for cheese and that may have been a mistake, cause cheese may have added a little more zing, but I doubt it. The BBQ sauce that came with the beef sandwich really complemented it well, it wasn't spicy, even though I prefer spicy, I didn't miss it a bit. Service, well you walk up to the window and order, but tip the gals anyway, cause they sure were nice. Ambiance, none at all, so I hope you have an active imagination. This is just a shack with a tent, where you can eat at, but I'd get it to go. Walk up to the window, order what you want, wait for your number to be called, and prepare yourself for some wonder grub. They do have seating... All picnic tables with several under a covered and screened in sandpit. I had the cornbread pancake sandwich. I'm not sure I will ever try anything else. It was the perfect combination of fried cornbread used as a bun for BBQ. And yes there is slaw on it. The sauce is mild but perfectly married the flavors. My boyfriend had a side of baked beans. They have all of the standards brisket/pulled pork/ chicken and you have some good options for how you would like to eat that mean (e.g. as a plate... sandwich). With that being said, this was the best barbecue I have had since I moved down here! The flavor was excellently smoky and savory. The menu has a wide variety of options for whatever kind of barbecue you may be craving, loaded baked potato, BBQ salad, pork, ribs, chicken, brisket, you name it! Was down in Foley for work, and stopped into Down South BBQ after reading the reviews here. Boy were they spot on! I'm a BBQ freak, and this was as good as I've ever had. Got the pulled pork sandwich on jalepeno cornboard. Huge and delicious. I like that the sauce is on the side. Perfect blend of sweetness and tart from the vinegar. Pork was perfectly smoked. The best barbecue I have ever had! I absolutely love Down South. The barbecue is out of this world amazing. I always get a small pork sandwich, a sweet tea, and either the cobbler or the banana pudding. The sandwich might be "small", buts it's a lot of barbecue and always fills me up. The sweet tea is always fresh and the perfect amount of sweetness. I love all of the cobbler flavours, and the banana pudding is so good. The building is adorable also, there are cute little pigs everywhere and the side of the building is painted with adorable pictures of pigs. The outdoor seating is also really nice, the fans keep it cool and the screens keep all the bugs out. It's cash or checks only, so make sure you are prepared (or just visit the ATM in the gas station next to them). read more
